Is my reading taste anywhere near similar to Kayla’s? No
Do I watch every single video she puts out? Yes
comfort booktuber frfr
Same!! Sometimes i check the books out anyway but i decided it's just best to enjoy her content as it is 😅
Me too, but she tells it as it is, more in common than some who gush about everything without thinking .
this makes me wonder how many of us are here cause same, I just adore her tho!
@@keatsiann mostly instead what I want now and pay very little attention to most bookboobers, ad when I read them I was appalled by the stupid recommendations. Kayla reads something's I dont but I trust her opinions.❤✔
Kayla is one of those really really smart people that is so intimidating but also so likeable at the same time. Just casually deciding that she is going to get her pilots license as a hobby 🤣 Us “normal folk “ decide we need a hobby so we start reading. 🤣🤣🤣
Hannah Whitten's books are Reylo fanfiction. That's why Ali Hazelwood blurbed her lol.
I love hearing Rob and Liam in the background playing games. 😂 it’s the soundtrack to your life and it's so joyful to hear! 🤍
just got back from the club and i’m making my gf watch this with me before bed i just thought you should know that
drink water! 🤗
Good luck for the morning. Glucose and a hot shower may help
slay
i have also been in this exact scenario with my girlfriend 😹
I love this comment 😂❤
To get rid of fruit flies you can put some apple cider vinegar and liquid dish soap in a small jar or cup. It’s a great trap for them (:
It would be fun to go through some of the blurbs and guess who actually read the book, there are so many blurbs that i read and know for sure they never opened the book 😂
This! I just finished a book and went back to the blurbs and thought - well what book did YOU read??
Was so excited to hear your thoughts on The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi. It's one of my top reads for the year and I'm not much of a series reader but cannot wait for book 2. I'm not normally someone who loves "motherhood" stories (although I am a mum) but Amina's grappling with her feelings on motherhood was so unexpected and relatable for me - I read it at the perfect time ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I just bought this book, so I'm glad to know you liked it.
As a Chakraborty fan I am SO HAPPY you enjoyed your first book by the author!!🥰
Also, I LOVE a retelling and no I'm not going to read the original, I love my first time hearing a myth being from a female POV😌
Kayla, I am obsessed with you. I love the way you talk about books!!! I already love to read, but it makes me want to read even more. Pls never ever stop making these videos for us. Also, your hair is so stunning!!!!!
I'm so happy you finally read The Witch's Heart. I had hoped it would be a bigger win but I'm glad you liked it. It's one of my all time favorite books and I definitely agree that I could have enjoyed more slice of life as well. I actually felt exactly the opposite where Circe was an appreciation and TWH was the more emotional one haha.
I've been pushing for you to read The Witch's Heart and I'm so glad you finally did! On the sapphic point, I usually leave that out of my review and recommendation of this book because I don't know if it would be considered a spoiler. It was one of my favorite parts of the book!
My first edition of The Ballad of Black Tom has a blurb if you're that dedicated. "LaValle's novella of sorcery and skullduggery in Jazz Age New York is a magnificent example of what weird fiction can and should do."- Laird Barron, author of The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All
the city of brass trilogy by sa chakraborty is my absolute favorite series/books ever!! a must read!
Out there screaming has been a super solid anthology so far!
The hair and lip combo!! Wow 💕
Aw I’m so sorry you felt horrible while making this. Still a great video though. Loved it.
you know I left my parents to go to uni last year (making them finally empty nesters because I'm the youngest child) and I haven't thought to ask if either of them have gotten their pilot's license
so glad you liked the adventures of amina al-sirafi! I had such a good time with it earlier this year and am super excited for the series to continue.
Pouring boiling water down all my drains is the only thing that helped me get rid of fruit flies sometimes it takes multiple times or place little bowls around your home with a mixture of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and then a few drops of dish soap!
Also I would love to hear your thoughts on Big Machine by Victor Lavalle if you decided to read more from him.
Oh I forgot the mixture also needs a tablespoon or 2 of sugar
I love your bookshelves, the way the look separated by warms and cools
Lol love when u said “none of you bitches told me”
This is such a fun way to find new favorite books! I had a wolf by the ears sounds like such a good collection
Great video as always ♥️ i hope you’re feeling better
1) I loveee The Witch’s Heart!!!!
2) A mix of dawn soap, apple cider vinegar, and water helps a little with fruit flies
The audiobook of Amina al-Sirafi is outstanding 👌👏❤
In the Amina audiobook, the main narrator will even lean away from the mic when she’s discussing with the scribe who is recording her story. Its so good! A+ creative direction
Idk why but the whole time I read Amina I kept imagining it as a book written for Delilah Bard in Darker Shades which made me happy lol. 🥰
I’m only 3 minutes into the video, but I had to stop to comment on your spreadsheet! I love it 😍 You’re the first I’ve seen choose next reads according to amount of blurbs. What a great the idea!!
ooh lip and hair combo!!! fire
That lipstick is 🔥
Ahh Kayla How to Say Babylon is SO good. Amazing as always!🩷
My day gets instantly better when I see you upload! Getting tea and a sketchbook to enjoy it!
I just finished Starling House today and it's my new obsession. I'm so excited to hear your thoughts!
Soooo excited for Out There Screaming!
yes! i struggle to follow fantasy books so lighter fantasy for adults is something i'd definitely pick up. also added the witches heart to my tbr. it sounds so good!
Love the concept of this video!
The Witch's Heart is one of my favourites of the year and I am so glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully you pick up her newer book which is in the same vein (still have to read it but I'm so excited)
Loved this vlog!! I sure hope you feel better!
I’m so glad you liked The Witch’s Heart. I think you might like Sistersong by Lucy Holland. It’s sort of a retelling of an old Saxon folk ballad and like TWH it also has queer rep. 😁
I would be surprised if the SA Chakraborty series doesn’t end up having at least a little romance. The romance in the Daevabad trilogy was really good.
To be fair Ragnarok is the best avengers-y movie. Nobody @ me but it's pretty fun and colorful
Other Booktubers I warch LOVE Victor Lavalle, so I would definitely prioritise that author😊.
Also loved Circe (a favourite) and thought the Witch's Heart was only ok and quite forgettable.
ADORED this vlog, thanks Kayla! (Sven though I don't have tatses similar to yours😅)
Chlorine is so good!!! Thanks for recommending it!
Just started the video but your hair is amazing ❤
Ooh! Happiness Falls is fantastic! Really interested to hear your thoughts!!
‼️ So Fun One of my favorite on going Kayla’s Experiment Series 📚 especially because I do like reading blurbs when I get a new book 😆
This is an interesting concept, I might try this out :)
great video! so glad you liked 'The Adventures of Amina al Sirafi" it's a fabulous story! happy fall!!
Great video as always, Lala. 🎉 I'm glad you got to enjoy at least a few good reads and i hope you feel better soon!
For the fruit flies:
I've heard that you're supposed to pour a tea kettle's worth of boiling water down your drain. It's said that they lay eggs in the bottom of the drain or disposal. That gets rid of them quickly. Just repeat if you start seeing them again.
For fruitflies, put some apple cider vinegar in a jar on the counter and they will go inside it and die. Also wash your produce that sits on the counter if you don't already.
Also pour boiling water down the drain
20:27 oh noooo. I hope you’re feeling better today!
you said you were worried that people were going to tell you you should have powered through for the wolf so I am here to counter that and say you should not have. Our taste isn't that similar so maybe you would have felt different but I have read it, and thought about dnfing it - and having finished it kind of wish I did. I literally said "I don't care" out loud while I was reading the book - not a great sign. Also a lot of the things you mention in the foxglove king are similar in terms of the trope-y, ya vibe (I have a high tolerance for that sort of thing and still thought it was a bit much)
I'm not a huge mythology fan but my high school's marching band show theme this year is Ragnarok so I have learned more about mythology in the last three months than I have in the last 30 years.
watching you be sick whilst im sick with a fever & waiting for joey to also bring me dayquil after work lol. i now wanna read Al-Sirafi 👀
What a great video to wake up to 😊
I'm getting a cup of tea because this is going to be great!
I would love to see you read your top 3 books of the previous years and read from those who blurb them. 😬
I definitely would NOT recommend powering through For the Wolf, lol. I am a fantasy lover but I 100% DNF'd it.
Obsessed with that gray and white striped sweater you have!! Any chance you remember where you got it?❤❤
S A Chakraborty is probably my favourite fantasy author I loovvee the Daevabad trilogy so much
Sorry you got sick :( and missed out on the photo shoot (for now). I'm greatful for the reminder though, to actively practice self-care and not push through feeling sick just for the opportunities™ Feel better soon!
Perfect timing 👌 ❤
Omg Kayla, you are going to ABSOLUTELY LOOOOOVE Lone Women when and if you get to it. I can almost guarantee it!
I’ve had a copy of foxglove king forever now but haven’t read it yet 😬
It took me two tries to get through For the Wolf, and I ultimately resorted to the audiobook to push me past the initial chapters, which was a good decision because I wound up enjoying it. But I don't really think it would be a good fit for you and your tastes, so you're probably not missing out on much, LOL.
Re: Horror at Red Hook. HP Lovecraft was a super racist/xenophobic dude. He grew up in a sheltered, white neighborhood in Rhode Island but lived in Red Hook, NY for a short time. He HATED his time at Red Hook because he was scared of all the immigrants and also just generally had a bad time. I always feel like this story by him was him rage-flailing at his experience, and it's just not a good story.
Kayla marvel girl era let's go! 😂
actually drives me bananas when people mislabel amina (and other adult fantasies written by women/with women main characters, because it's nearly always women) as YA. The protagonist is a mother in her forties! in what universe is that YA????? just because it's not grimdark or explicit?
I have great news about the phrase "i really liked loki" and the marvel universe 😂
LOVE the lippy in the intro and also i NEED you to read Lone Women by Victor LaValle. OK bye. 💖
nothing to do with the video but i love you and you're one of my favorite youtubers!
also ur lipstick is everything!
omg this is finally happening!!
Yayy new video 🎉
Are you going to continue with the darker shade of magic series
So, as a Marvel girlie, I have to say, if you are going to watch a Marvel movie without needing to connect to anything else Marvel movie, Thor Ragnarok is the one to watch. And as you talked about the book I realized I only know about Angraboda? from a video game (God of War Ragnarok). Probably should check to see if it was accurate🤨
Have my fingers crossed that I’m getting Out There Screaming for Christmas
I really love for you to read from Clare Macintosh ❤️
I'm very interested to see what you think of Starling House...
Awesome vlog! ❤
I really want you to watch Thor Ragnarok now haha. But fair if you don't want to.
Lala reading mostly fantasy. 😁 ❤
yayy i really needed this in my life right now, thank you kayla
Omg I hate that I did that. Thanks so much !!
Being sick while reading a bad book is such a bummer!
I wanna recc to you This Rebel Heart by Katherine Locke, specifically the audio book, as it popped into my head while you were discussing Foxglove! It says it's YA fantasy but it definitely feels more like adult magical realism. It's about the Hungarian Revolution in the 1950s, so it might be a bit sensitive of a topic right now, which I won't get into here, but it's beautiful and interesting and I think you'd like it!
Where is that green striped sweater from??
💕💕💕
If you had to watch a marvel movie Thor Ragnarok would be the one to watch.
I have the same calendar and you know what? It has not been giving what it needed to give this year
❤
I love that you’re taking flight lessons. I have a lot of friends in the aviation industry and took some flight lessons for fun in my early 20s. I did get to solo a few times before I was done. I didn’t really have a goal to finish my training. 😂 However, it did get me a job as an office assistant at a flight school. Fun times! I hope you enjoy it!!
Can the adventure of Amina be a standalone? Like a cliffhanger ending?
If you're asking bc you're worried about committing to the series, I'd say it's fine. The book ending wraps up nicely and you don't need to continue the series.
I really loved the book and can't imagine you won't want to continue once you finish it tho!
@@lyndzyrenee thank you. I don’t mind series. But the problem is I only get to visit a bookstore a few times a year because there’s none in my town. I need to travel to get to one.
❤❤❤
Charlaine Harris wrote the True Blood books. Fun and spicy and ridiculous! Read them all 10-15 years ago.
Lovecraft himself as an author is hard. He was very clear about his racism, xenophobia etc but what he wrote started a whole mythology of the old ones and existential dread.
The HP Lovecraft society does a really good job of talking about it and being sensitive to all these topics while understanding his works.
Hi
Could you please review the book
'The collection of short stories' written by O. Subramanian.
I thought it is a nice one to read. It's is entirely based on the real life experiences of an ordinary man.
Relax and get well soon
For some reason I thought you had already read Trial of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse
I am also currently battling fruit flies. May we win!
Norse mythology isn't specific to a Marvel movie, LOL. I'd honestly thought Loki and Odin were about as ubiquitous as Zeus or Hercules.
I definitely relate to the empty nester fears lol my daughter is going to college in two years and I will be 39. I’m not sure what my husband and I will do without her lol she’s pretty much the reason why we are as social as we are (which is still minimal 😂)
Also it sounds like my daughter and I had the same cold at the same time as you😂
I have a non book question. Does Liam call you guys by your first name instead of mom/dad? Why? is that just what your family does? is there a reason? or just because?
Bookshelf tour?? :-)
