It's great if you learn several languages at once but I believe it is not a good idea if languages are too similar as with Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, it might confuse you too hard

I speak intermediate Italian having learnt it over the past year. Now moving on to Portuguese as I've always liked how melodic it sounds (it's the language of Bossa Nova baby!). I'm actually surprised at how closer it is to Italian in some aspects, compared to Spanish - the words hoje/oggi and tartaruga/tartaruga come to mind (yep, the word for turtle is exactly the same in Italian and Portuguese). I'll be watching this channel closely. You're doing good work here Virginia. As a Brazilian who knows some Italian, I get the sense from what you say here: Italian and Portuguese are closer to each other than both to Spanish... most people think Spanish and Portuguese are twins, but they're not really... Portuguese is mostly based on Greek and Latin, same as Italian, while in Spanish, the "accent" or pronounciation is an heritage from Arabic language and native Iberian languages, getting it quite diffrent... I've grown up with Portuguese and English, as well as Spanish, but lately I've given myself the task of being a polyglot... I'm starting with Romance languages, since they are siblings to Portuguese, but I've already started also with some Japanese, Finnish, German, not to mention some Brazilian Indigenous awkward languages... I wish you good luck learning Portuguese... feel free asking for help... and a Happy New Year to all of us!!

Tengo 60 años ,jubilado , me dedique a estudiar idiomas , actualmente estudio al mismo tiempo 8 ( ocho ) Portugues , Francés , Italiano , español ( palabras nuevas ) , inglés , Alemán y 2 ( dos ) de nivel( tres ) mandarin y Ruso. Los 365 días del año , Saludos a Ud y a mis compañeros estudiantes de lenguas .
This was very helpful to find out that one needs to learn daily at least 15 minutes or more to learn the language. I took two semester of Portuguese already and have been listening to music, watching movies, practicing grammar with some books as well as reading. Watching this video has given me more motivation to keep learning Portuguese and hopefully visit Brazil soon and maybe stay for a couple of months to learn to speak it well. Obrigado por este vídeo.

Olá Virgínia. Também acredito que a coisa mais importante no aprendizado de idiomas é motivação. Minha língua nativa é japonês, que é completamente diferente do português. Para mim, português e inglês são parecidos porque os dois idiomas usam alfabetos. Gosto de aprender uma língua que é diferente da minha língua nativa.

Obrigado. Infelizmente não sou fluente em português. Escrevo muitas palavras em português e estudo muito a gramática. A propósito, eu sempre uso o Google tradutor para me ajudar com a minha escrita. Ao contrário da escrita, falar é muito difícil.

This was so helpful and certainly helped me to understand why it is so difficult to learn both Portuguese and Spanish at the same time. Nonetheless, I do still want to learn both. I know much more Portuguese because I lived in Brazil for 4 years but I live in California now and want to learn Spanish while still maintaining my Portuguese.

It shouldn't put you off or prevent you from starting. But you should expect interferance between the languages because of similarities. It helps to have days where one language is the primary and the other language the secondary. Also accept that one language will take priority and the other is on the back burner.

I finally decided to start learning Portuguese a week ago. About 4 years ago I decided I wanted to speak Spanish fluently. I changed all my devices to Spanish and basically only listened to music in Spanish and watched a lot of Netflix and youtube in Spanish. I ended up loving the music and culture and made so many friends from different countries. About two years after that I started studying Japanese and I recently just got tired of it (no offense, please don't attack me in the comments).I wasn't enjoying watching shows, listening to the music, and I usually feel really lonely when I am working in Japan. It's just a completely different culture, but I do like all the latin bars and restaurants there haha! So I ended up changing my phones back to English and some of my more commonly used apps to Portuguese (like UA-cam and Netflix) . My plan was to focus on Portuguese daily and do a little Japanese review on weekends so I don't completely forget everything I learned. But, we'll see how everything goes and maybe I will change my learning plan!

I must admit I hate that I started learning languages at age 24, but I'm proud to say that I now speak French (lived in France from 1980 - 83, Spanish (lived in Spain from 1983 to 1985, Portuguese (lived in Brazil from 1988 - 1990) and my native language of English (I was born and raised in the US). I'm now studying Italian and German. Why Italian when I really did not want to study yet another Romance language? Well after 3 trips to Italy I decided why not, couldn't be that hard with the languages I already spoke and it's a beautiful language. Why German, because I was tired of romance languages and I wanted a new challenge. I've been studying it on my own and it is a challenge despite the fact that German and English are from a similar language tree. My biggest failure was not learning Arabic after living a long time in an Arabic speaking country. Why did I fail, that's a long story and unfortunately one of my biggest regrets. My dream would be to learn a language that does not come from the west but I'm running out of time as I'm old now. It all started with a backpacking trip to Europe/Central Asia and being surrounded by multilingual people. I told myself that I wanted to learn a language so I started with French as I said at age 24. I work on 2 languages every day of the week. Mondays: German and Italian, Tuesdays French and Spanish, Wednesdays Portuguese and German, Thursdays French and Spanish, Fridays Italian and Portuguese, Saturdays Spanish and German and Sundays French and German. I've followed this method which I tweak from time to time for years and years. That backpacking trip changed my life forever. In fact I became an ESL teacher: teacher of English as a second language, who ended up living overseas 25 years in 5 different countries. languages and learning about different cultures are my main interests. That said, if I can learn German I think I'll be done with trying to learn new languages. It's hard and takes up a lot of time especially if one is in a situation where one is not surrounded by a language. Just trying to maintain a certain proficiency in a language becomes a challenge. That said, I would try another only if it didn't come from the west, for example Arabic again or Swahili. Why didn't I write this in Portuguese? It would have taken too much time to check the spelling, accents, etc. I speak, understand and read the languages I've studied, writing not so great depending on the language. I've always focused on the oral aspect of languages not much the written aspects which is something I regret but not a ton. Finally in my humble opinion German grammar is a major headache especially when one has only studied romance languages but I'm determined to learn it. Obrigado.

B2: you can talk, write, listen and read the language quite easily, you can work or study in some places using the language
C1: you are very fluent in a level near to native, you can use a language more elaborated, for academical or tecnical stuff. This is a higher level than B2

Querida Virginia! Você não se cansa de fazer tudo bem? Que bate-papo tão interessante e produtivo! Acho que o senhor Gabriel é um poliglota muito legal, pois é evidente que ele têm feito um grande esforço, desde que era uma criança e mesmo até a atualidade, para aprender idiomas do jeito certo. E é bom para a gente conhecer a experiência de um profissional como ele, porque assim a gente pode compreender que aprender duas línguas ao mesmo tempo é difícil, mas não impossível.
A propósito, gostei das três Ms: método, material e motivação, os quais são elementos que a turma deve considerar ao momento de querer aprender uma língua estrangeira.

Years ago, a friend told me: " to learn a language fast, you have to love the people and the culture where the language is spoken". I was glad to hear Gabriel say the same thing. It's way easier to learn a language when you love the culture and the people. That's why I think I am going to pick up "Brazilian Portuguese" fast.😁

I am fortunate to be born in the u.s as a native English speaker BUT the bad thing is that.. since English is the most spoken language in the world.. it makes it much harder to learn Portuguese, In my opinion.. because it's "useless" in a sense.. because I already know English.. why would I need to know any other language. Opposite for other languages they pretty much NEED to know English so it's tough for them I'd assume because it's pretty much not an option. is English easy to know? I wouldn't know.. but I'm having difficulty with Portuguese because 1 I don't really speak in it or text.. which is my fault.. but 2 I can't find anywhere to watch shows or movies in Portuguese for free.. everywhere you have to pay 😭 if anyone knows a site to watch Portuguese shows for free let me know..

It depends of your tastes, political preferences and etc, but we have some TV Shows like "The Noite" (right wing and more conservative), "Porta dos Fundos" (left wing) and/or "Inteligência Ltda" which is a Podcast with ghests of all segments of society (from bishops to sluts, Vilella, who is the interviewer, talks to everybody, I really recomend you this one).
There are free chapters (episodes) of soap operas like "Avenida Brasil", "A Escrava Isaura", "O Clone" or "Gênesis"(biblical soap opera) for free in UA-cam.
You just need to tap portuguese words in UA-cam with the topics you want to and bingo! 👍
As a swiss german native I can say that learning english is fairly easy for us since it's close to german and most of the media is in english. Also it's the language you use to converse with people that don't speak your language most of the time. Aprendar portugues é certamente mais dificil

If anyone knows a site or app to watch Portuguese shows for free, let me know. I've checked out may sites/apps and I cannot find one that doesn't cost $. I tried Portuguese shows on tubi but for some reason it's translated to English (dubbed) and I can't change that. Maybe I could change my xbox to Portuguese.. but changing everything for shows as movies? I don't know ...

@@SpeakingBrazilian I just need a video of where to find free Portuguese content:( all I know os UA-cam. Everywhere else you have to pay. Netflix, Linopie, Globopie ect. 😭. Although Warzone 2.0 just game out (a game) and I switched the language to brazillian Portuguese and it's actually helping. 1 day in. The only game I've ever seen with audio and subtitle in another language 😌

I think this 20/80 method is useful to don't lose the motivation to learn a language, like english for example, that is necessary study but is hard to study if the motivation don't show up. There is whe this method becomes useful, because while your motivation to study english comes down you are studying other language that you're interested, then you don't lose the advanges of learning languages, as well your motivation for learn english returns and your language learning skill can help too. So it's a great method that allows keep learning english while you're learning a language that you like and would be useful in the future
Oi! Eu sou francesa! C'est mon 2ème jour d'apprentissage de la langue brésilienne! Merci beaucoup pour votre chaîne... Muito Legal. Je l'écoute pour me familiariser avec la musicalité de la langue. Je comprends l'ensemble de ce qui est dit. Cela m'aide de voir les sous-titres et entendre les mots. Je découvre vraiment le brésilien et la langue me plaît beaucoup. J'ai pas mal de bases en espagnol et je parle un peu l'anglais aussi.
Je dois apprendre le brésilien car je compte venir à Rio cet été. Mais surtout le Seigneur Jésus m'envoie dans le pays comme missionnaire pour la création d'un centre pour les enfants des rues
(Belo horizonto/ Curitiba). C'est une très grande motivation pour moi d'apprendre la langue. Être au service de mon Dieu et venir en aide à ces enfants.

Oh, en algun sentido es lo que estoy tratando de hacer ahora. Aunque en el mismo tiempo es lo contrario a lo que dice el senor en el video.
Yo estoy pasando el curso de frances de Duolingo para portuguezehablantes a pesar de no saber hablar portuguez. Hay que decir que no tengo ningun razon "practica" de aprender alguno de esos idiomas, entonces para mi es como un reto y un devertimento.
Y yo ni siqueira soy hispanoblante, la verdad es que soy ucraniano (y si, hago este curso cuando no estoy en refugio por misiles de rusia) y ya he aprendido (mas o menos) espanol y he pasado curso espanol-italiano de Duolingo. En esas circustancias he decidido que "solo" aprender portuguez seria demasiado facil y en algun sentido "aburrido" - considerando cuan es parecido al espanol - y entonces he "inventado" esa manera de intentar aprender dos lenguas latinas en el mismo tiempo. Tambien para ver si es posible (repito que no tengo ningun razon "seria" de aprender ni portuquez ni frances - probablemente solo entender entrevistas de futbolistas en ese idioma). Es bastante interesante para ser franco: tienes que averiguar por logica y intuicion reglas y palabras de portuguez y entonces transmitirlas a frances. Es un proceso peculiar pero interesante.
Si a alguien le interesa ya he pasado quinta parte de curso, asi que no va tan mal.
E para nós brasileiros não nos interessa aprebder seu idioma.

Hay que conseguir que el portugués se convierta en la séptima lengua de la ONU, pues es la única lengua que hablándose en diferentes países en varios continentes, con más de 200 millones de hablantes, con un país de tamaño continental y sin embargo no está incluido en ese grupo.
Está sim, e é um dos idiomas mais importantes da ONU e o sexto mais falado no Mundo.
Im from a place that speaks a TON of Spanish (Southwest US) and I speak decent Spanish.
9 months ago I started teaching myself Portuguese because it's gorgeous 😍🥰.
Then suddenly my work had many many calls requiring me to speak Spanish (or say lo siento no puedo ayudar) (más tenho tentar)
Anyway I ended up speaking a terrible mix Spanish and Portuguese, all the L sounds bent out of end of the word. A bunch of "O Que"s ...

É fácil você entender, mas falar é outra coisa.
Tem gente que estuda uma terceira lingua usando a segunda lingua. Assim voce estuda as duas linguas ao mesmo tempo. Por exemplo, se voce estuda ingles como segunda lingua e frances como terceira, use um livro em ingles pra aprender frances. Se voce começar o italiano como quarta, use um livro em frances pra aprender o italiano.
