Polyglots Gabriel Silva and Steve Kaufmann discuss the potential benefits of learning two languages at the same time.
These Polyglots are my inspiration for sure
They are very. They've shown me anything you want to learn and become in this life treat it with love and you will become that. Via language. A whole lot of inspiration coming from these 💜videos! I love it 😎
i know im randomly asking but does anyone know of a trick to log back into an Instagram account??
I stupidly forgot my password. I would appreciate any tips you can give me!
@Dallas Jayden Instablaster ;)
@Israel Tommy Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Israel Tommy it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my account :D
I’m learning French right now and I have reached the intermediate level. I’m considering taking up Japanese again but just wanna see how it can fit in my schedule. You guys are such inspiration 😊
comment aimez-vous le français jusqu'à présent?
I always enjoy listening to the two of you speak together: something interesting and useful always seems to be the result.
Thank you! :)
Right now I'm doing exactly that! My main language now is Chinese (since I wanna reach a C1 by the end of this year), and my minor language at the moment is Tagalog.
I have experimented and I think that 2 languages max works for me, specially when I have clear goals. But whoring out by studying many different languages at once can be very fun, so it depends on what you want, results or linguistic exploration.
Hahahah “whoring out” 😂 👏

I am learning three languages at the moment: Polish and Croatian for my work (both at B1 level) and a little bit of Turkish (A1) for fun. Learning two closely related languages is like cooking two soups in the same pot, trying not to get them mixed. However, I have noticed that it is very helpful to use a different method for Croatian, compared with the one(s) that I use for Polish. I would love to hear experiences from others who have studied two closely related languages at the same time.
How's your progress in those languages now?
what methods do you use to learn each language?
Italian, French and a bit of Portuguese. I think if you're able to recognize the difference between them you won't mix them
Awesome mate! What is I personally do is try to keep them at different levels, so like I wouldn't start two close languages at the same time from scratch, I'd get one to an A2 or B1 level then I'll start adding in the other one and do them both daily, or as much as I can, I take some days off from time to time, especially when my heard is hurting from making new synapses. Oh and another thing that's cool about learning 2 at the same is that if you get bored with one or aren't quite making the progress you want you focus on the other and give it some rest for a while then, I somehow find even more motivation to go back the the first one its a weird cycle but I love it.
I found it sometimes slipped over the border I'm learning Italian, French and Spanish, but the result was that word stuck in my head's flag up and in reality I actually learned it faster!
Would love to know how you are doing.
Is learning two languages at the same time a good idea? It depends on how much time you have and how much progress you will make. If you want to become fluent in a foreign language, then that is going to take a lot of committment and time. Also, I'm sure that you want to make lots of progress. If you try to learn two languages at the same time and you are not making that much progress, then stick with one language.
I am learning French, Spanish and, Italian, best decision I have ever made, my world is thrown open and I have exciting things to look forward to.
I have just this minute seen a recommendation on Audible for Gabriel's Book, it's like finding the biggest present you wanted and missed it in the wrapping paper !
Another great video of yours! Learning two languages at the same time is possible of course. But the progress is the half... unless you don’t work and are paid to learn languages 🤗 but there is not a confusion in our brain when we do it or anything like this. I did it already but I don’t do it anymore. One language at a time. Professor X here. Stay safe.
Portuguese for 11 months then started Russian on the 6th month of Portuguese. so 11 months total Portugues, 5 months total Russian. Enjoying both a lot!
I started with Portuguese 7 months ago and picking up French now! Hows it going?
So happy to see you back, Gabriel!
👏 thank you
Gabriel is really such a great polyglot
I got in a rut with Spanish for so long because I just did not know how to make progress, and I had no idea what kindve grammar I needed to learn. But know I’ve finally figured it out and my Spanish has improved so much within the last few days. And know I have a lot of confidence to start another language (Chinese lookin reallll nice) but this video made me realize I don’t have to aim for fluency in every language. I can be a polyglot and not be fluent in every language.
And what did you progress?
I grew up with half of Spanish but really struggled with a fair amount of grammar, tenses, when to use which versions of which words (which is often maddening in that language)... Recently I doubled down on really immersing everything I do in it and am starting to make some progress.
Totally agree. I think language learning can be analogous to sports. Should we just do one sport at a time to make faster progress? For most people life is a richer experience with diversity. Also even if we try to learn just one new language at a time, is that a reality if we have already learnt a different foreign language?, at what point are we only maintaining other languages rather than enhancing our knowledge in them. Do we define that as no longer learning/perfecting grammar or vocab or more native skills e.g.colloquialisms or accent . So I think if we already know a different foreign language we will effectively still be learning in those languages but at a much slower pace unless we don't use those previously learnt languages at all but that would be crazy to just let them slip.
I started revising French eight months ago, and I’m now a good B2 level and can understand native podcasts. I started German from scratch two months ago, I’m supposedly low B1 now, more like A2. It works, I don’t worry about not speaking German yet, I have no rush, I can enjoy the process because French gives me lots of reward. If my French was poor, I’d rather not do German, just focus on the French.
Im gonna do the same. Learn french and start to german when my french reaches to B2 level. French and German is the best combo
@@ykyjfhdgujhfgsfh Yes I think they are different enough to not interfere. That’s why I avoided Spanish and did German.
@@StillAliveAndKicking_ totally agree! And they say "English isnt a language, its 3 languages on top of each other pretending to be one" i think the 2 of them are french and german. You can trace the cultural influence of them in the global language of the world so its pretty cool. Do you speak other languages too?
You guys are such an inspiration! Thank you for the great content you put out there for us!
I'm learning Italian and Spanish at the moment. My Italian is a lot better than my Spanish because I started it first. I find it helps knowing a little Italian before Spanish because it helps with the male/female way everything is described. I really wanted to learn my mother tongue Welsh but I find it extremely difficult.
Welsh pronounciation is easy for English people, and the writing is phonetic. They also speak clearly. Lots of words are shared with Latinate languages eg ysgol (school, French école), pont (bridge, French le pont), ysgrifennu (to write cf scribble, French écrire) and so on.
I found that learning a different language every three months has helped me to focus better and not get burned out. I studied Spanish very intensely for three months, then German, then Greek, & now Swahili. Then back to Spanish etc. I had already studied Spanish very heavily in the past & then Ancient Greek. German & Swahili are new adventures for me. I found I was burned out on Spanish and Greek. So far I'm really growing in my new languages & will fell ready for Spanish when it comes time to refocus on it.
I study English and German at the same time, but I have been learning English for more time. Sometimes I made some confusions about one and another while I'm speaking, but I enjoy it and focus on twice a week in one and on in another.Actually I'm something like B2 in English and A1 in German. :)
I'm starting Spanish now (my first second language) in August 2023 and will start Japanese or Mandarin in April 2024.
I'm starting Spanish now and hopefully Portuguese next year. I want to be able to speak to all of Latin America
@@shomshomni2314 I have no desire to visit Brazil. LOL
@@SenorJuan2023 Brazil is on my bucket list for sure. One of the most beautiful countries in the world with the warmest people and culture.
I've been learning three languages for a while and I felt a bit frustrated because I wasn't making progress. i do work full time and have other commitments too (although not during lockdown ). I was ahead on one of the languages, so I just kind of did passive learning with that and focussed on the other two mainly. Finally, I'm getting somewhere this last week. I'm only learning languages to be able to speak to people in my environment - working in a shop, speaking with my neighbours etc. And of course, the culture.
BUT, being a learning addict, I try to maintain previously learned languages. I've seen lockdown as an opportunity to do Italki lessons. In May, I did 7 different languages some just to keep up the level. Serious dabbler here!
How is your progress so far?
I am seriously studying German, but I dabble in Russian and Arabic every now and then. Once I am comfortable with German I will take Russian more serious, but I am having a lot of fun working on my Russian every now and then.
In my country.. they're trying this new thing which is teaching both English and French at the same time in primary school ( 3rd grade). I kind of find it interesting; so I want to do my thesis about this topic; however, I'm not sure if it is a good topic to search for.. I really need some opinions
Hey did you do your thesis on it? I think its interesting. Maybe we underestimate our potential and you can learn 2 at once.
It's very useful video. thanks for your sharing. you're excellent can be a Polyglots.
For me, I learned Hokkien and Cantonese at the same time in the past, they're similar language.
And I can speak basic japanese, and I'm using japanese to learn Korean now.
And I think learn 2 languages at the same time is good. Depends on 2 languages are similar, or If A language is basic level, it's ok use A language to learn B language what we want to learn.
I started learning Mandarin some months ago, but now I feel like I got into a good habit of learning like 5 words per day, and that if I do more than that, I'll just get the words all jumbled, and it will just be less efficient. Like, it takes me 15 minutes per day to learn 5 words, but learning 10 takes 40.
So, I decided to learn French as well, because I have enough time
As lithuanian, now I am learning Spanish ( for few years already but being slow) but I find italian band I really like and I really want to know at least some italian and understand lyrics. But I am afraid that I will mix them and lose my Spanish knowledge. But I really needed this “if it’s interesting and fun - do you. “ Maybe I will mix them but I will be happy learning them
Glad that you are making videos again.
Thank you! I’ve been making videos all along, hehe - I was focusing on my other channel though because it’s grown a lot bigger (192k subs)
In my opinion. No problem! I study in the same time, normally, I've studied the same words and phrases at once.
Language buffet - I love it :-)
Hahah yes!
Amazing video, congratulations to both of you!
Thank you Ana!
Oi tambem tenho 13 anos e estou estudando ingles
Am learning 3 languages spanish turkish and Arabic at the same time but I haven't faced any kind of difficulties in learning it yet mm it's going well yeah
Because they are totally different from each other, but you gonna find it difficult if you wanted to learn Spanish and Italian
I'm learning French and German at the same time too! Twinsies!
I want to do this. Can you tell me how it’s going for you?
@@user-ti4ol5gw8j it's going pretty good so far. We could be language learning partners if you'd like so we could help each other out? If you're open to that here's my number 9514375580
hell yeah I hope he stays in good spirits as we make our way through this. I love his commentary his advice the whole nine. has really made approach to language learning a lot more doable. As where before it was like aw man I gotta remember all these vowels and verbs and such but after hearing him talk it's all about your approach. if you tryna to get in and learn it all in a day then of course you gonna fail because you're no longer doing something out of love you are trying to force it down and you can't do that. Time and practice. It simply takes time and a lot of practice. 🧐
I think I don't have problems with two languages, - if one of them is on a level high enough to just use it! My English is somewhat between B and C, I think. Not so good in speaking, but better in the other abilities. I can watch videos, read novels for native speakers or write in English, and my daily conversations in German help me to avoid loosing my mother tongue. 😉 The only "classroom activities" I still do for English is enjoying approximately 2 English lessons on UA-cam a week, just because there are some incredible teachers. And of course, it doesn't harm to have, for example, another grammar explanation - although I'll never learn to think about things like 'Does the action in the past have a consequence for the presence' whilst speaking, and if I would, I would end up in breeding over it for minutes, then coming back with the message: 'Well, *every* action in the past had made the presence as it is.' or something like that. 🤣
*Improving* a language doesn't collide with *learning* a second language. I had the theory that I can learn a third language on a A0 level - just play around and get used to it, learn the script and such stuff. Just to have a break from really working on the second language until it's on a level that I can use it for doing other things than language learning. I still think the theory is good, but my feelings definitely doesn't fit in. I have a lot of fun with the "language for hard work" and always had to force me to switch to the "just playing around" language. I changed the third from a difficult to a really easy one, but it made no difference. Seems as if the only thing I really learn by treating a language that way is to hate it! Some days ago I decided to stop learning any third language because it seems that I'm not open for it now. Or... perhaps... Knowing a little Farsi would be great for my job...! Although communicating with hands and face is also a good way to get in contact, and this way I'm perhaps a better motivator for learning German for the refugees I sometimes have to look after.
That was encouraging! Thanks!❤
I’m learning Spanish and German! Spanish is at intermediate level and German is at a2 atm! I can’t wait to be conversational in German in Spanish I am
There is a good chance you will get better at Spanish first.
@@diariosdelextranjero yeah it true as started Spanish first and I’m better at it already, but I’m putting more effort in German right now, studying 80/20 German/Spanish so hopefully I’ll get my German somewhere too
Hey! I am also doing the same recently started with german and know a little spanish as of now.
Any tips?
When you said so what if I am A1 I used to be 0! I felt that. 👏
i am learning english (a2) and french (low level).
Great vídeo!
RIP MOSES!!!!!!
I have actually used actively 3 languages in 1 day, in the UK I spent time speaking Russian on behalf of someone near on all day.... went to a Chipotle bar in London.... and.... spoke whole heap of Spanish.... just reminds me of studying 2 languages at once it was tiring.
I agree with Steve on 1 thing, putting one language down and turning to another can freshen up your thinking. I will study French today but will listen to some cornish a little later.

Good video! Thanks to the author for his good work! I'd like to recommend Yuriy Ivantsiv's practice book Polyglot Notes: Practical Tips for Learning Foreign Language. This book has many useful methods for learning a foreign language, how to develop your memory, how to memorize words, learn grammar, quickly learn to speak, read and write. All recommend this excellent book! Good luck to everyone in learning a foreign language!
I’m trying to learn both French and Italian at the moment. My French is decent and I’d like to continuously improve it but I’d also like to learn Italian which I’m still relatively a beginner at. Both languages are so beautiful that I wouldn’t want to have to settle for just one. My head hurts sometimes with learning so much at once and trying not to confuse the two languages but I will say I do have more fun this way! 🇫🇷🇮🇹
I’m doing the same with French and Italian but worried about mixing the two up! Are you having issues with accidentally using French with Italian and vice versa?
@@Matt-uv2ygwell well , how did it go ?
@@GamersAreOppressed-gg6bz thankfully it hasn’t been an issue for me! I’ve continued learning both of them. I basically focus on one language fully for a month or two and then switch. But all always the to watch content in both. Not sure if that’s the right way to do it, but I’m managing to learn both without real issues. Obviously I’d pick them up faster individually if I focused entirely on one at a time.
@@Matt-uv2yg I will copy your plan , sounds excellent since focusing on one language will make me progress further and by switching it after 2 months while still hearing it’s tongue through media so I don’t forget it or backtrack and hearing it through media will help me , I will start with French since I already have a speaking partner .
I have some questions if you don’t mind
What apps do you recommend?
And how did you learn the alphabet and pronunciation?
Thank you for your time and knowledge.
I dont know if im the only who has this problem? When learning 2 languages at the same time i always confuse the words with each other
Very insightful!
rest in peace Moses
Hi, Gabriel ! I´m Armando from Spain, I have a medium level of English and I have been thinking about starting to study German. Do you think it is a good idea? Thankss
How do you actually set about it? Different languages on differnt days? Alternate days if you're learning 2 languages?..
Do you think the "acquisition circuits" in the brain need continuous stimulus? By that I mean that once you're fairly fluent in language A, the rate of acquisition necessarily drops, so could starting with language B get those acquisition circuits going again and help with the acquisition of language A? Of course you'd have to keep getting input in the first language but could you increase the rate of acquisition in language A?
I am very interested in Italian and Greek , I’m currently learning at the same time and I’m curious if it’s even possible
Sound advice here!
Any thoughts on icelandic and Norwegian at the same time. Would it be more confusing then Spanish and icelandic the icelandic would be the 80%
It seems like a wise idea, but I still think it's a bad idea cuz you won't be able two keep it up. Unless you have something better to do!
I love Spanish and French 😂. Pretty happy
:)

Great!
Is it okay to learn English and German at the same time?
Sure

Does he actually retain all those languages
If you get really good at a languge, you have a higher chance to retain it.
