Come take a stroll in Montreal's Old Port with my Leica M10 and the original, legendary not the reissue Leica Leitz 35mm f/1.4 Summilux M 1st Version Steel Rim! Look at those dreamy, glowy and detailed photos! Do you feel the charm?!
I hated my original 35mm f1.4. Changed to 35mm Summicron. Both goggles. Later in life, I bought a friends Goggle-Summaron 35m f2.8.Magnificent! I adore this lens! Your test was genuine! Bravo!

That glow is AMAZING!!!! I have the Summicron 35 f2 V3 and I get a similar effect on the corners of the photos when shooting wide open... but this? This is next level 👌👌👌

That Leica dreamy glow right there, I believe I'll need to grab some older lenses out there soon and stop playing with Aspherical lenses.
While I enjoy modern lenses. I've been thoroughly enjoying using older glass, they've got such charm and character. They breathe life into the images, especially for Leica glass since there's an added dimension of complexity and unique qualities that I haven'f found elsewhere.

Very true to life review! I really got the idea of this lens. It reminds me of nikon 55m f/1.2 and why I couldn't let go of it, even though this esthetic doesn't click with me anymore.

You made me buy a Summilux 35 pre-asph v2 (Canada made/black with the plastic tab, produced in 1981) after this review. Hope the f1.4-4.0 will be that soft. Totally liking that non-sharp images which can be done by APO or smartphones these days.

I just threw a moment cinebloom onto my q2 so I’m curious about the result. Definitely won’t get the awesome flares, but should be fun nonetheless.

Love the video and your content. This lens though is just hype. The glow is spherical aberration and that's all. Get a 0.7m focus distance and save $10,000+ and get the Voigtlander 1.4 Nokton Classic. It's been the reissue of the steel rim lens for ages and it's like $800 CAD.
Just ordered one (the Voigtlander, not the Leica... .).

Enjoyable presentation; thanks! I recently visited Houston Camera Exchange, in Texas, to compare a Summilux 35mm pre-ASPH Version II, in their Used inventory, their demo Summilux ASPH FLE, and my Zeiss Distagon 35mm f.1,4 ZM. The vintage Summilux certainly had its visual charm, but, it was annoyingly small, and, I balked at spending about $3K US for what would be an occasional-niche lens, especially when less than an additional $1K would buy a decent pre-owned 35mm ASPH FLE, with its own noticeably charming optical aberrations, and much better handling qualities, for my hands. (Of course, the best option, for my budget, is to convince myself to be happy with my Distagon. Notably, the Distagon’s size does not bother me, while shooting.

I have a late German 35 lux pre-asph from the 90s and man on a Monochrom or with black and white film, it is absolutely gorgeous.

yes, absolutely!
It's a shame, but the original 35mm Summilux is now a 'collector's' lens if only because of its astronomical price. I had a couple back in the day, an optically very good later version with the golden lens coating, and an early Leica Blue coatings M3 googled version that was not as sharp wide open and with flare issues. This was a very difficult lens to assemble with the production techniques of the time, and examples optically can vary widely. The original deep lens hood I can be effective and needed (not just an option) to help with flare issues, and still the crazy flare can happen. Using the lens 'bare' can lower contrast and is just asking for trouble. The reissued SR has the similar look physically, beautiful, but has it's own issues with assembling from what I've read, reported loose aperture rings and hood, and internal parts materials/design is a question, but modern lens coatings to help with flare and increase contrast. Another option is the lens I have a pre-ASPH early v2 1966 35mm Summilux that has the locking focus tap. It is sharp, and still has the optical properties (good and/or bad ;-) that give it that 'character.' I call it my 'two lenses in one.' Wide open it has style or character in spades; low contrast which is fine in low-light high-contrast situations, can show that Leica-glow, the light seems to almost bend around the edges of elements in the image for a unique magic look, and can have nice bokeh at f1.4-f2 for a 35mm. Stopped down to f4-f8 it becomes sharper across the field (never sharpens into the corners) and higher contrast, beautiful natural color, and becomes a good general lens. I'm fortunate to have gotten it many years ago when prices were what now would be unthinkable. There are a lot of fine modern 35mm lenses these days, so it was nice to see you enjoying and understanding this vintage lens.
For me this lens behaves a lot like Voigtlander Nokton Classic vII 🤷🏻♂️

I bought the same one but a fraction of the price. Nokton 35f1.4 II sc. actually I think most people would prefer the Nokton rendering to this one.

Let's be honest here. If you would buy a sony/canon/nikon or whatever lens and you would get this result at full open, you would return the lens as faulty. I do own some leica lenses and cameras and I dont like this hype over the insufficiently corrected lens.
Totally see what you’re saying. But in a world of film sims, filters, luts, halation/mist filters, etc. knowing that this is a quality of the lens and a product of the times only adds to the charm. I can have my APO lens but I’ll always be drawn to a character rich lens. This one has it in droves. Also pay attention to some of the unique features of the lens: the bokeh, vignette (lack thereof), colors and overall draw make it stand out from a faulty lens design.
@@GenericPhotographer I get all the arguments. I have 35/2 ver 4 which does the same on full open. I sent it to leica to rebuild, calibrate etc. I need to be sure it's supposed to be like that :D
