  • A flight attendant just couldn’t believe a black woman doctor was actually a real doctor. She is. Thankfully this ignorant racism didn’t cost someone their life. Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz, Kim Horcher, and Kenny Hamilton, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/join
"Cross, an obstetrician and gynecologist, said she immediately flagged down one of the crew members, offering to treat the man.
She got a response she wasn’t prepared for.
“Oh no, sweetie, put [your] hand down,” Cross recalled the flight attendant saying. “We are looking for actual physicians or nurses or some type of medical personnel, we don’t have time to talk to you.”
The reason behind the flight attendant’s apparent skepticism? Cross says it was because she is black.
Cross described the experience on the flight in an Oct. 9Facebook post that had been shared more than 34,000 times as of Thursday night. In it, she said she was “sick of being disrespected” as a woman of color in her profession and accused Delta, the flight operator, of “blatant discrimination.”
Delta said it has reached out to Cross about what happened. In multiple comments from the official Delta Facebook account, the company said the incident “does not reflect the Delta culture. We condemn discrimination toward our customers.””*

Let's see: a flight attendant serves drinks and food, she is basically a waitress; but apparently she can tell a doctor by just looking at her.

***** I have read the story and watched videos from various YT channels and web sites. I didn't watch this one as TYT have been shown many many times to leave out certain crucial snippets of information in order to lead their viewers to certain conclusions. If you think a certain thing from watching this video alone then I'm not surprised that you have the conclusion you have.

***** Again being presumptuous, I don't support Trump or Hillary I think theyre both terrible for your country. I'm from the UK by the way. Again, I have to say that we have only heard one side of the story (and from a TYT perspective no less). Everyone should wait to hear what the flight attendant has to say about her reasons for believing one passenger over the other instead of presuming it has everything to do with their identities.
In a couple of days time when we have all the facts and you still think that then that is your prerogative. But at least wait until you have all the facts before being particularly damning of this woman, who in all fairness may not have done anything wrong.

While not a doctor, add the boxer Jack Johnson to the list, he invented adjustable spanner (wrench) while serving jail time, his "crime" being married to a white woman.
But to be honest, it is somewhat surprising to see a black doctor in US. Specifically in US, not in Europe, not in South America, Cuba or Caribbean islands and of course not in Africa, but in US. I myself was surprised by a video, where a black lady speaking in pretty typical "ghetto accent" turned out to by an astrophysicist!
And sorry, but your userpick doesn't look like that of a doctor. 8D

It's not your fault for asking a question like that. This is not a new site! If i got my news from this site, I would be misinformed.
One had credentials, the others did not. No controversy here. You can't just mental jump over that fact.
Delta Air Lines have issued a full statement saying they are taking the accusations “very seriously”, Metro Online reports.
      www.thesun.co.uk/news/1985252/airline-accused-of-racism-after-refusing-to-believe-black-woman-was-doctor/
“Three medical professionals identified themselves on the flight in question. Only one was able to produce documentation of medical training and that is the doctor who was asked to assist the customer onboard. In addition, paramedics met the flight to assist the customer further.
“Flight attendants are trained to collect information from medical volunteers offering to assist with an onboard medical emergency.
“When an individual’s medical identification isn’t available, they’re instructed to ask questions such as where medical training was received or whether an individual has a business card or other documentation and ultimately to use their best judgement.”

If I need emergency medical help I don't care if that help comes from man, woman, black, white, asian, hispanic, pink, purple, or polka dot. That flight attendant needs to find a job more suited to her/his ability, like washing dishes, mopping floors, or cleaning toilets. Something that doesn't require actual human contact.

agreed, people that would ask for proof from one person and not another based on appearance should not be working with the public. I want someone that knows how to help, and they can easily prove that to me by asking the right questions and not being judgemental as in assuming things and making lots of mistakes. Such as people in the hospital that do not know the difference between a male and a female as we have here in Victorville California at victor valley hospital on 11th st.

It amazes me the willful blindness of the historical context of the Americas and particularly the US, in which people simply/obviously are not considering when it comes to what every marginalized/minority group has experienced since the Europeans landed in the "new world"...non whites in the US beginning with the Natives, then the African, THEN later on other non white groups, have been euthanized, enslaved, criminalized and discriminated against in the Americas from 1492 to present day. I'm painting a broad picture, but the details are extremely appalling. So now since about the early to mid 1960s, women/minority groups have made progress and have won little battles in the long war against the tyranny and oppression of the European American White Supremacist system and with those strides and victories for equality have resulted in more white people feeling the exact pains, bumps and bruises over the ensuing 50 odd years, as those who were subjugated and oppressed over the previous 350 + years. One can only say that this "anti-white discrimination" has been brought upon by white supremacist ideology, and inturn impacted white society in general in the negative ways such as those which white people complain about today. So the question I now pose is...Could this possibly be an example of what Malcolm X famously said, "...a case of the chickens coming home to roost..."? Are the tables turning? Let us refer to history for the answers.

White people seem to think they can do and say every, and anything to us/black folks. I was in Vegas because I go back and forth but I'm from the ( D) etroit. I was at the Super Market and parked in a handicap parking spot. This white lady came up to me talking shit about my parking in the space. Certainly I checked her, then showed her my handicap sticker. I hadn't had time, because my plate wasn't a handicap plate because it was a temporary situation. I hadn't had time to place it in the window. But she might have done well to just wait and see when I walked away, then say something, or just mind her own business. Her husband came over and I had to tell him to get wit her wack crazy ass. They think they can can do and say anything to Black people. As I said I'm from the D, we don't play that and our white folks know.

You stop person A who says they are a doctor, refusing to believe them, asking for credentials and grilling them while someone is in critical condition. While I was a USAF Combat Photojournalist I was assigned to "Project: Haylift" during the drought in the southern states when the military was transporting in food to the farmers to keep their cattle from dying. My first assignment was in a little farming community north of Montgomery, Alabama to interview and take pictures of the mayor, town council, and the farmers who were going to receive the first shipment of hay.
I've set up my equipment in their conference room and ready to get started when the mayor asks me, "Well, when is the photographer going to get here? We haven't got all day. Can you go and get him?" I told him, "I am the photographer and I've been waiting on you for the last 45-mins." He didn't believe me, got on the phone to the Cattlemen's Association, and when they told him who I was and then asked to speak to me immediately--he instantly went pale, handed me the phone, and sat down in a chair visibly shaken and feeling like a fool!
He was nothing but apologetic with me for the rest of the day. One of the council members said, "We really hope that his actions don't put us all in a bad light." Of which I said, "He is just the tip of the iceberg of what happens down here."

People don't get it. The FLIGHT ATTENDANT PLAYED THE RACE CARD!!!!! When white people disrespect a person of color who is just being themselves, living their lives, because of their race - the WHITE person is the one playing the race card. NOT the person who pointed out that they got got disrespected. Blaming the person of color for talking about an experience in which a white person treated them with disrespect because of their color is like blaming a woman for saying she got raped. Blaming a person for saying they got hit by a car. Blaming someone for saying their house burned down. They did nothing wrong. It HAPPENED to them. All they did was be Black, a woman, crossing the street, have a fire at their home.

And more than likely you are one of the people who are throwing the "race" card out there all over the place. AND most likely throwing out the "woman" card, the "bully with your big wheeled truck" card , "LGBT" card, "Muslim" card, "Jew" card, "1%" card, "Atheist" card, "Able Bodied" card.......what ever card you need to justify what ever behavior makes you, or anyone, hell - even me - feel like we are better than other people.

Lynn DeBeal I don't see how any of what you said applies. If it was your loved one, needing medical attention, how could you think that the person pushing the button when a doctor was being requested for an emergency - wouldn't be a doctor? Have discussed this just now with several friends who fly a lot - doesn't happen. A person presses that button to assist because they can. Do we want a death to occur over such silliness?

A disrespectful teen, frat boy, Russian, Red head, Blond...anyone else who is disrespectful to you. Which I'm sure you do. Don't you? If some Irish, or Italian guy or girl dissed you, you would diss them back wouldn't you? You can only take that "turn the other cheek " so far, you know.

    • @MAGAMAN
      @MAGAMAN 7 років тому +2

" If you "Got it" it would mean looking at your and other white peoples behavior in a whole different way." That is a very racist remark. Why don't you black people start taking responsibility fro your problems and stop blaming them on white people. The reason black neighborhoods turn into slums is not because of the white people, but because of the black people who live there. If you don't report crimes to the police, you can't expect it to improve. How many of these black kids that get shot by police were obeying the law? NONE OF THEM! Start teaching your kids to respect the police instead of teaching the to hate them and three would be a lot less of these incidents. Stop letting you kids listen to music that glorifies drugs, gang life and violence and a lot of these incidents would never happen.

This has happened to me several times over the course of my career. I'm not a doctor but have worked in retail for several years and despite having been a store manager and lab manager, time after time when customers come in the store I smile I greet them and they smile back but walk directly to towards a white associate, usually a male if they can find one and ask him to help instead of me. Its automatically assumed that a white man is the boss and the black female is subordinate to him. He knows more, he's in charge so he's the person that they want help from. And honestly I don't even consider those people necessarily to be racist in the traditional sense. I don't think they consciously decided anything, that's just the unspoken bias that exists in some people's heads.

    • @hughmungous3357
      @hughmungous3357 7 років тому +4

Maybe this is because not a lot of businesses are run by black females. If you would work in a boutique it probably would be the other way round. Not a big deal after all.

    • @jaguarrose7022
      @jaguarrose7022 7 років тому +8

Hugh Mungus I work in retail. And in a way you just kind of proved my point for me. Like I said I don't think these people are racist. I don't think they consciously decided that because I'm black I CAN'T or SHOULDN'T ever be in charge. But in the back of your mind there is a belief that a white man is probably going to be in charge, and that he is probably going to know more or be more competent then the black female. I'm not even necessarily mad, I just wish that you would be more open and acknowledge that that sort of bias is a reality. Early on in my career when I was younger it didn't occur to me that it had anything to do with my race or gender. However, I'm 38 years old now and I've seen it happen entirely too many times to still chalk it up as a coincidence.

No it isn't blatant discrimination and here is why. When they asked the man for his credentials he had them and was able to show them proving he was a doctor. If he didn't have his credentials nobody would have been allowed to help the man because flight attendants are trained to not let anyone touch someone in need of medical assistance unless they can prove they are trained. They can lose their jobs for breaking this rule because allowing people to try and help someone in need can result in law suits if they are not trained.

When they asked the man for his credentials he had them and was able to
show them proving he was a doctor. If he didn't have his credentials
nobody would have been allowed to help the man because flight attendants
are trained to not let anyone touch someone in need of medical
assistance unless they can prove they are trained. They can lose their
jobs for breaking this rule because allowing people to try and help
someone in need can result in law suits if they are not trained.
By the way before you call me a lair about him having his credentials
even TYT's source says that he provided them.

I gave the banker the benefit of the doubt because it's about money, and banks are notorious about not wanting to be responsible for loosing clients' money, but this one's clear-cut racism. Who the hell would CLAIM to be a doctor, risk being liable for the death of someone, just for... what? There is literally no upside for her to this. Why the hell would she lie about it? Racist flight attendant...*facepalm*

    • @TheCerebralDude

The bank incident was racism too

    • @yokabedhunde8633

With the bank incident they could have just taken the check and put it on a nine day hold. Once the check clears she would have gotten the money. Now I don't understand why they needed to call her back in, ask her where she worked, what her desk number was, for her HR information. I mean they could have just called the bank it was issued at to see if the check was actually valid. Again though the nine day hold should have taken care of that right? So that's why I think it is racism. I mean do they do that to all their customers? It would be one thing if the lady wanted the money instantly but obviously she didn't because she left. If the check is valid why do they care about how she earned it?

    • @MichaelBerthelsen
      @MichaelBerthelsen 7 років тому

Yokabed Hunde That's why I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I've had to jump through hoops when dealing with larger transfers as the first transaction at a new bank too. And since this was the first deposit, and most likely a large one, makes sense that they're being careful. Doesn't mean it's definitively racist. Might have been, but could just have been overly careful bank staff. Here there's no doubt.
      ***** Exactly.

give them all benefits you want, but they are racists. I remember when a pilot fell ill the attendant asked if there's any pilot, a white pilot came forward and was not asked questions.. imagine if that pilot was black. Now in this case the white doctor was not asked for his credentials.. the man was lucky because there was a white doctor otherwise he could have died or his case worsened. Plain racism.
Why is it a white pilot is not risk for the flight and the black pilot is?
why is it a white doctor is not a risk to the patient and the black doctor is?

I had a black woman for my doctor. I was going to London soon and worried because I kept getting a "cold" every other week and asked her to fix me so I could enjoy my trip. She told me I did not have a "cold" and prescribed a medication for allergies and I felt wonderful and enjoyed my trip. Years later, my new female doctor (insurance changed, had to get another doctor) contacted that doctor and asked her for my medical record on that incident and was prescribed the same medication again. So, YES, not only are there black female doctors, but there are also really great black female doctors.

Back in the mid 80s my beautiful, black, female doctor, was also married, with children, and she looked like she was maybe 24. I had an outpatient procedure done and when she came in in her scrubs, she looked like she was about 18. Out of the context of her office, I might have been skeptical that this "24 year old" was a doctor with over 8 years of schooling and 2 years of internship, and a family, and can't say I wouldn't have been skeptical if she had been a Doogie Howser, or anyone who could have been described as a handsome, male doctor, married, with children, and looked like he was pushing 24. The beautiful doctor in THIS story ALSO looked like she was 18, so it wouldn't have mattered if she'd been a (white) Doogie Howser -- he'd also have been asked for credentials. How old was the other doctor? BTW, my beautiful female doctor was the head of the team who successfully delivered the 8 babies of "octomom".

So there is some basis for really respecting the crew, I always bear in mind, whether they're cleaning the bathroom or telling me haughtily to sit down and shut up or saving my sorry ass when the plane gets into trouble. This is ALL THE MORE REASON why the flight attendant displaying racist discrimination against the helpful doctor in jeans or however she was dressed, is offensive and objectionable. She wields covert authority, and alas, she expresses covert racist stereotypes. We shouldn't really gang up, as she only is displaying what is latent in our white supremacist culture all the time anyway.

Do some background check on this story. She didn't provide credentials to prove she was a doctor. There were other medical personal on the plane did have credentials on hand, who Timika Cross might have not seen other Delta personal checking. As it seems this is being reported from mainly Timika's perspective. Also other reports also say there were more medical staff available besides Timika and the male doctor.
Why didn't Delta let Timika Cross help? Lawsuits. Delta is responsible for the safety and health of their passengers. If they let Timika help that passenger who was in trouble, they could have face a lawsuit if Timika was making stuff up. This happens in many business and the like.
Now about how the flight attendant's tone and such, I'm not flight attendant but I'm pretty sure their first goal if a medical emergency happens is to keep that person isolated, area clear and the surrounding masses calm. Hell it could have been the first time that flight attendant was put in that kind of situation and that could cause someone to panic.
Do some better journalism and get more than just one person's testimony before reporting on a story. The flight attendant did go back and offer apologies and such, but if your only focusing on Timika's point of view she is going to look like a bigger victim than what played out, and thats just perspective and how we as humans see the world and our surroundings.

If that was me or my family member i would not waste precious time knowing help is a couple of seats away.

That's the reality of today. Stereotypes still exist. If you're black and a doctor, a lot of people are still surprised at that. If you're asian and an athlete, a lot of people are surprised at that...

Ok a bit of fact checking. According to Black Star Atlanta, in an article called "Delta Airline Passenger Almost Dies Because Flight Crew Didn't Believe A Black Woman Was A Doctor". The article states the man did show his identification and it's only Cross who sates he didn't. First question to ask, is how can we know Cross was privy to every interaction between the flight crew and the male doctor? If you can answer this, you might have a better idea if there really was discriminations involved. Now remember, according to the source I cite, it is only Cross who clams the male doctor didn't show identification. To say she's an unreliable witness is an understatement. Her account needs to be corroborated.

      It says the opposite.
If I missed something please point it out.

No it doesn't. The paragraph in question states.
"Cross pointed out that the white man never showed his credentials"
So yes you most certainly did miss something.

Hugh O'Toole So you're not going to point it out.
You said the article said the man did show his credentials.
The point is we have to see what the investigation gives.
      We shouldn't assume either way.

"Thanks for the help, but he can help us, he has his credentials".
Yes I would say the article stated he did show his credentials. I think you misread what I meant by that.
      "We shouldn't assume either way"
Why do I get the feeling that you were assuming a particular way. Maybe it's the quasi-accusations regarding how I'm "acting" in that other thread.

Hugh O'Toole That was not from the article though that's an excerpt from the woman's post.
Were do you get that assumptions?
I just had a suspicion you automatically believed Delta, which it seems you do.
I'm being rational and waiting for the investigation.

I believe there are several on here that have had negative happenings because of their race. My 1st name has always been associated as as "Irish" name and all of my life, from grade school until now, whenever my name was called, people would be shocked to see me respond. I am from PA and was privileged to grow up in a wonderful, multi-ethnic town and attend a great school district and University. While I lived in WV for a short time, I had a job interview at a college in the town I was living in. At the time, I had a BA, as well as other credentials, and had worked for several well-knows companies in PA. The HR Rep (who was a White woman) accused me of forging my resume, starting with my name. She accused me of lying about my degree, as well as my work experience saying there was no way I could have the education I listed, and the work background. She began to question me about every company seeing if I was going to say something opposite of what was on my resume. Eventually, she stood up and ordered me to leave her office due to forgery and she would never hire "someone like me" to work there. That was a kick in my stomach. The more things change...the more they stay the same.

I'm sure there is no possibility that it was because she looked young? Or another reason?
