- Here I talk through my initial impressions of the all-new 6th generation 2025 Toyota 4Runner. This 6th gen 4Runner has some pretty big shoes to fill... Having owned several 5th gen 4Runners, I have developed a true soft spot for that platform. Will this brand new 2025 Toyota 4Runner live up to the iconic nameplate? Will it sell just as well even with the smaller displacement motor? A 4 cylinder SUV is tough to get excited about... but the performance numbers don't lie. This new 4Runner will share the same 2.4L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine as the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma. Are you okay with that new engine? Or would you prefer the naturally aspirated V6?

Why? Way more power and Toyota has been building hybrids and turbo engines that are very reliable for a long time.
The 4cyl offers very little down hill engine breaking which is a problem when it's used for towing

If I had the money, I'd buy another (maybe a third) 5th generation 4Runner over this 6th generation. I guess that I'm just old and stuck in my ways...a lot like a 5th generation 4Runner.

I'm happy it's being made in Japan still, but being forced to get a hybrid on the Trailhunter and TRD Pro kills it for me. I'll be holding onto my 5th gen for a long, long time.

First, Toyota has been making hybrids for 25 years now. They are some of the most reliable engines on the planet. Second, the hybrid system gives instantaneous torque at zero mph and zero RPM. You couldn’t ask for anything better for off roading.
@user-vx7vi3vq1c my main concern is reliability over the longhaul. I would be shocked if the 6th gens dont make it to 200k with just minimal maintenance (theyre Toyotas after all), but im fairly certain they wont be hitting 300-400k without major work done. The more complicated components, gadgets and systems, the higher the likelihood of more problems down the road. Hybrids require new, very expensive batteries over time, and turbos are also in need of extensive maintenance and a rebuild when they get up there in mileage. No matter how you spin it, the 6th gen will never have the same reliability and longevity of the 5th Gen. I'm sure the 6th gen will be very capable offroad, but for me and many others that reliability is by far the most important factor.

You failed to mentioned the dedicated cooling system on these turbos. You failed to mention there are plenty of million mile turbo truck engines in the road today. I know you desperately want to believe what you’re saying, but it’s not true. 30 years ago people were saying this about V6 engines. And they were wrong.

Watch The Car Care Nuts channel and he'll say exactly what I just said about turbo and hybrid vehicles. Yes, even modern hybrid and turbo charged vehicles. The guy is a Toyota Master Technician with decades of experience; I'll trust what he said over some random dude in the comments 😄

I think most us current 4Runner owners like design but the combination of the engine options and (expected) price will keep us put. I'm way more likely to get a used V8 Toyota/Lexus SUV before I buy a 6th Gen 4Runner.

Keep the videos coming. You can see it in their face when the “ others”are next to the new Tacoma or the 4Runner, but won’t speak what they are feeling. One that gets me is the Engineering guy, you all know who he is. He cannot hide it, he tries his best though. 😅
No one can really say these new machines are prices correctly and when they come out the dealers are going without any doubt mark them up. Don’t buy!

Love it. Made in Japan too. 🎉 The trailhunter is awesome to see right from the start with the added skid plates and rails on top of the OME suspension. Truly excited.

I Agree With Everything You Said Except about the grill or the body style. I have to say the 6 Gen looks 10 times better than the 5 Gen. I never liked the Boxy look. Yes 6 Gen Giving 4 Gen Vibes & I am all for it

Thank you for your overview - much appreciated. What I can't understand is how Toyota is positioning the 4Runner upper trims with the Land Cruiser and the GX. I would expect that the GX Overtrail+ will be the most expensive off-roader of the bunch, but where does that leave the Land Cruiser? And how does the Land Cruiser compare to the 4Runner Trailhunter? I guess I am at a loss as to why the Land Cruiser 250 is on sale here at all.

Keeping my 5th gen 4ever. Like some aspects of the new one but to me, the 6th gen has changed the classic 4Runner identity. It’s a different vehicle at this point. It’s Toyota’s version of the new Defender. More tech to compensate for less character.

Thanks for your honest review. I have a 2019 4Runner SR5 premium with a 3rd row, and the new one just doesn't hold enough value proposition to trade it in. I only kept wishing for Toyota to take that ultra-reliable V6 engine and supercharge it. And swap a 5sp auto for a 6sp or better yet - a manual. Then we would have a perfect rig. But, alas, there we have it. A 4th-gen-looking suv with a 4-banger hybrid that should've been reserved for regular passenger cars or coupes. And, like you, I worry that back seat is tiny.

The power plant kills it for me. I'm glad I got a Terra TRD Pro. Finally, the only TRD Pro that doesn't share a color with any other trim.
What's the gas mileage probably about the same?
LM, your honesty is also colored with a fair amount of negativity about things. People are passionate about the brands they love, it's natural. BUT the world is changing and Toyota has to lead the way in many regards with alternative power. People can complain about it, but the v6 and combustion engine has maxed out its ability to go further with torque etc. Nobody ever says 'Man the world really needs CD players back in cars, because we've all moved past it. We're on the tipping point of the next gen vehicles and how they're powered will continue to evolve. For some, it's hard to see the good old days go by. It's kinda awesome to be living thru the change point, im pretty into it. To each their own, thanks for what you do.
I happened to be in Denver today. My god, there are bad ass 4Runners everywhere. Will be really interesting to see if this 4cyl version that is very over complicated will sell.

Not gonna lie, but I haven’t been enthusiastic about any of the next gen Toyotas. Kinda miss the old days, good thing I have a 21 Tundy 🤑
That four banger turbocharged engine is not going to last the miles that the naturally aspirated V6 gave. I have spoke to many mechanics and they all agree. Also before you turn that four banger off let it idle for two or three minutes because the oil going through that turbo needs circulate as the turbo cools down. Shutting an engine off like that immediately allows the oil to just sit in the turbo and cook because it's not moving. This is going to cause issues down the road. And it's going to cause issues after your warranty expires. Talk to the mechanics.
Also I don't care for the looks of either the new Tacoma or the new forerunner
Tell your mechanics to look at the engine design first. It has its own separate cooling system for oil circulation so idle running isn't needed. This is not 1995 😂 they battery runs a dedicated pump to cool the turbo down after shutdown of the main oil oump. It is very overengineered. Mechanics huh. 😂
This is the same tech used to cool down the hilux turbo. Hilux engines beat every 4runner reliability in every way.

Don’t listen to these jabronies. A turbo will wear out your engine and you will have oil dilation from the gas blowing by the piston rings. I am a mechanic you idiots and this guy for the most part is correct. I don’t care about the cooling systems in place either. It is over engineered just like a Mercedes or BMW. Turbos destroy 4 cylinder engines. Period.
The last true 4 runner was the 5th gen.
Disappointed at the TH payload at 895lbs. I know its very early proptype and final production number may change and I know the TH is pretty loaded, so very little after market mods will be needed. But once you add 2 adults, there goes at least 400 lbs. Plus whatever you throw into the backseat, trunk, and tongue weight or roof top tent, not much margin left for payload.
Also, I expect this to be few thousand dollars more than the Tacoma given the more metal, glass, lifted tailgate used. Hopefully I am wrong, but my gut feeling is it will be a ted bit more than the taco.
I'd love to see a side by side 2024 4Runner vs 2025 4Runner. I owned a 2021 4Runner Venture model, and I really miss it. I had to sell because of the wife's back injury getting in and out. It would be interesting to see how these 2.4 L 4 banger turbos hold up over a few years. Personally I would snap up a 2024 4Runner V6 over the new 2025 4Runner. I'm now driving a 2024 RAV4. keeping my 5 gen indefinitely. 5 gen looks classic, elegant, and also reliable. unlike this ugly look. side rear look like it had been in door ding accident. all that chisel lines and double chin in front look like tacoma, rav4, and sequoia had a baby.

I'm skeptical of the new engine in the new 6th gen vs the tried and true of the previously 5th gen. Forced induction (which the turbo is) vs naturally aspirated (which the V6 was) reliability. Forced induction puts stress and strain on the engine internals, that tends to have reliability issues, as opposed to naturally aspirated.
I do like the off road design of the new 6th gen. I also like how they tend look similar like back in the 90's; a pick up and SUV versions of each other.
Put back that trusted naturally aspirated V6 back in, and I would be interested; otherwise a used or CPO Tacoma or 4Runner for me.
I am with you on the philosophy of losing simplicity. This thing in paper looks great performance-wise but we will have to see in service-ability and long term reliability. I am a bit bewildered on how this fits with the 250 series, way more overlap in price and use case than I was anticipating. Styling I think it looks good overall, but it looks friggen massive. I know the wheelbase got 2” longer, the body 4” longer. It looks wider too. So maybe not quite as tidy. The 5th gen is a great size to fit down trails so I thought that was another area it would differentiate from the 250 series. Styling again, the food looks so long, the rear doors and rear seat legroom look kind of small in the other videos I have seen. Overall it’s kind of busy looking but looks good. I really didn’t like the 5th gen when it was refreshed but grew to like it, same with the last taco, so their current styling really starts off better in my mind. So all if that being said and me being one of those folks who just bought a new 5th gen in anticipation of the new 6th gen I am still content with my decision even in the face of the new 6th gen and the buzz it will have for some time. Probably the minority but the whole simplicity and proven drivetrain thing was the big draw plus honestly I think the 5th gen had better packaging as far as wheelbase, length and interior space is concerned. Giving the choice between the 6th gen and the new Land Cruiser? I think I wound definitely go with the Land Cruiser at this point. It’s a bit more mature looking and more subtle styling suits my tastes better. One last thought… I am curious if they will offer three row in the TRD Offroad, or any 6th gen with a rear locker, that would be cool.
TRD pro looks stunning and it will be a much better drive. Overall, could not have expected any nicer.

I automatically thought 4th gen...which is my least favorite, aesthetically. I'm not a fan of the new 4runner or Tacoma design, it's just not my taste. I like the new Land Cruiser, though. I feel like the styling went backward with the new 4runner.

(Totally diff) I was a hater of the B48 which is the baby bro of the amazing B58 from BMW.
After having two B48's, i started appreciating and loving the dang thing. I love it as a daily.
I'm in after watching all the vids for the 6th gen. Will def be putting a reserve spot for a 6th gen.
My 2015 LTD coming up on 200k miles. After seeing this, there's no reason to not go to 300k. It's nice, but not as nice as no car payments. And I hope the engine performs better than it looks. What a mess.

People need to realize, toyota doesn't take the blame when it comes to putting a 4 cylinder in the vehicle. Get mad at the EPA, besides that, no one knows how this drivetrain is gonna perform long-term, if you don't like it, that's fine but at least test drive one before you give logical opinion on it. Give it a few years. Truthfully people hating it makes even more special to me, meaning the order time won't be as bad, when i order mine.
I noticed that none of the UA-camrs that depend on those Toyota press event invites had commented on the leaked 4Runner photos yesterday. They waited until the official press release time to post their 'first look' videos.

I love the look of the trail hunter and the trd pro and I also don't like the power train, if only they put in the 6 cylinder they put in the sequoia without the turbo or the hybrid, and also offer a hybrid option without the turbo
Agree with your dislikes (except, possibly, regarding the 2nd row seating since the 6th gen is a little longer than the 5th). I'm sure that since Toyota's 10:15 p.m. EDT reveal, dealers are jacking up the price on their remaining 5th gens since all that was actually needed to update them was adding more gears (the 6th gen doesn't actually get much better MPG than the 5th) and, if you're into the tech, tarting up the Limited and Sport trims with big screens, etc. Since the reliability of this new 4-banger remains to be determined (particularly since turbo engines wear out faster than the 5th gens naturally aspirated V6), Toyota would do themselves a favor if they'd have a 10 year 200,000 mile (whichever is LATER) transferrable warranty on the turbo to give peace of mind to buyers. They'd also do themselves a favor if they introduced a simplified trim level for the 2026 4Runner that eliminated the spaghettiesque 4-pot with a slight update of the 1GR-FE V6 to have 8-10 gears instead of just 5. What buyers want is a choice and, unfortunately, Toyota has just given them a take-it-or-leave-it presentation. I think that, perhaps and unfortunately, Toyota did Ford and Jeep a favor today (and also give Nissan an opening if they decided to update and reintroduce the X-Terra for 2025).

I understand Toyota is trying to save money (and profit more) using basically the same chassis and motor in every model. But damn, this is putting a awful lot of stress on a little motor. Doesnt matter if you add turbo, or super chargers, or chip it. It's still a little motor...
Not really. They are not made of wood you know. Pretty conservative for today's standards. 300hp out of 4cyl engines is basically mid 2000s tech long perfected. The 400+ torque number is only when the electric motor kicks in and that has nothing to do with the ic engine. This engine is built to put out that power and the transmission to handle it. If anything, it is underpowered.

Just think if they didn’t have the EPA dictating what’s able to made we could have had a much better V6 or small V8 that would be plenty power wise AND decent MPG. Full size trucks with V8’s getting 17-20 mpg proves it’s possible.
Spending 50k for a 4Runner off road is crazy to me.. and I used to have an offroading model in 2017 brand new for 38k 🤦🏽♂️

For what it’s worth - this was the first video I saw on the New 4Runner and the only one I watched from start to finish. Now that Toyota has revamped the last of their truck / SUV lineup, I wonder how much attention the majority of the folks invited to the launches will continue to do Toyota content vs moving onto the next mfg’s products. Toyota has missed the opportunity to support the guy that gives them the most content.

I get all of the points you stated. Specially that the MSRP's are beginning to get to exorbitant levels However, Toyota has had a LONG history of reliable hybrid technology. Look at their Prius name plate, that's been going on for 20 years plus. Turbos as well, look at the Toyota Supra and the MR2 they were Bulletproof vehicles if kept stock lol. I get that the added complexity will cause maintenance costs will go up. But Toyota has had a LONG history of building all kinds of engines that are bulletproof. I get it, change is scary, but could you imagine if they would've kept the 4Runner the same for another 5 years and raised pricing to 48k-65k? I just want Toyota to most importantly get back to their roots of building AFFORDABLE vehicles. There was a time where a fully loaded mainstream car was 2k-4k less than their luxury counterparts starting price. Now you'll have a 4Runner TRD Pro that'll top out at the same price as a GX550 Premium. Now that's insane....

You are not a ‘YES MAN’ as far as assessment. We enjoy your sensibility and again that is shared in this household. The governments need to get over the crazy requirements that cause vehicles to go downhill. We are fairly new to Toyota and wish we had one sooner but didn’t need to buy a vehicle as our Silverado and Tahoe (older years) were great until head gasket at 148,000 on Tahoe and we still run 01 Silverado. We wouldn’t buy ANY AMERICAN made vehicle!!! TROUBLE!!! Instead of fixing problems all these companies do is come up with making new problems like Toyota has with these new engines. I’m glad still made in Japan. Motor options suck BIG TIME. Looks nice but these other channels gushing over it is just not what I want to hear. I prefer honesty!! Thank you!!!

These look really sweet. Not surprised these didn’t release pricing on these. I think with the new upgraded electronics the msrp will be about a 10k increase to current msrp.
There is zero chance I would buy this vehicle with the new engine. Same reason I won't replace my 2021 TLC HE with one of the newer ones. When you shrink a motor, AND get more power out of it, the motor becomes less reliable.

4Runner owners up until now have always complained about fuel economy and lack of power. Now they get a hybrid 4 that gives both better fuel economy AND more power and still complain. "Whaaaa!!! Why didn't they put in a big 'ol V8 that has 400 horsepower and gets 45 MPG?!!"😂😂😂😂 Someone explain engineering to you people.

Price wise they will be cutting in to full size premium suv market and and will be hard to justify 70k + after toyotas markups not to mention it will compete with new lexus gx and branco. Arguably more capable suvs.
Own a 2022 Lime Rush Pro. Will be our forever car after 60 vehicles. I do love the Teal Trailhunter, but I can't see dropping 70k plus for one. The 4Cylinder is a no go for me especially with turbo and hybrid the engine looks like a mess.

This adds a lot of wear and tear to the engine and diminishes reliability and longevity which is why people liked Toyota’s in first place! But I guess there is a sucker born every day and people still buy these ridiculous trucks at outrageous prices! You seem to be a prime example of that!
Yeah all those turbo Lexus vehicles are just falling apart? Think Toyota would put that in the Landcruiser, tacoma and 4 runner if they were not certain of its reliability.

That was the only option because Toyota was literally breaking into the US car market and when they finally had the financial power, they built a proper V6 and V8. That was the standard. Untamed, I got a lot more insight from your short video on the new 4Runner than I did from any of the so called “influencers” who did get invited to the event. They all literally posted some 45-minute videos to praise Toyota for a bunch of useless tech features. Some people forget what it was that made the 4Runner legendary. It was the fact that it was a simple, capable and reliable vehicle. Thanks for keeping it real and for voicing your “own” opinions freely. That’s what separates you from the rest.
