Red, Blue, Gold, Double Black, Black, 18, Green. (Worst to best value) I recently did the tasting pack, and I enjoyed everything except the Gold, and the 18 was my favourite. In Canada the Double Black is overpriced to be higher up.
Given the number of positive experiences I've seen people having with the 18 I'm beginning to wonder if I got a dud...
@@JohnsDrams It's hard to tell from a 50ml bottle. I've found that my first impressions often are different from my long term impression of a bottle once I've had it 10+ times. The 18 impressed me enough that I'd consider picking it up. I didn't expect to enjoy the Black as much as I did either. I had written it off as a "cheaper blended" and it greatly exceeded my expectations. Because of the 1.75 L bottle, the Black is a heck of a value.
I tried the Black one and it Tasted like shit
I had the double black recently in a blind tasting. It was my dad's favourite in a blind of 8 different drams. Admittedly, I have always wanted to try the Blue lable, purely because of marketing.
You'd never say no if someone bought it for you, but past that it's a rolex whisky - just there to show off.
Really pretty much spot on with my thoughts as well. I have not tried Swing either, but I am very interested in trying it.
I think I want to delve into other blends, I'm pretty Walkered out.
The shocking thing is that my girlfriend and I enjoyed the 18. We got tropical fruit notes and kitchen spices. It stood out amongst the rest of the discovery series and we preferred it over gold label.
I'm starting to think I may have had a dud batch...
@@JohnsDrams Perhaps. I haven't watched any other reviews of the 18 but I feel like that could be the case :-/
Great video, not sure about the music though. Like being on hold to a budget energy supplier.
I think I was going for cheesy background interest but kind of just got crap bops instead :(
Wow, that’s pretty much just how id rank them. The gold got partied with, so I don’t remember how I felt about it, but the rest are the same. That was helpful. I have an Island Green that I still need to assess
I’m a whiskey noob but my favourite at the moment is the island green. Can you tell me what’s the difference between that and green label?
i am 3 bottles in on the Gold Reserve, and honestly, I feel like the Black has slightly more character. Compared to others for the money, I just can't spend any more money on Johnnie Walker. The whole line of JW reminds me of Jack Daniels here in the USA, it's only number one because of MARKETING!
Very true. Although you've reminded me I need to get some JD done sometime. Really milk the algorithm's prostate.
Hahahaha!!
I'll say, when I first got into scotch whisky, Johnnie Walker was a very exciting brand I was looking forward to exploring because MARKETING. But as I went through and tried different offerings I started to find that most of the ones worth trying are good, but not terribly exciting. And then after buying the remarkable Green label, it almost makes the rest of them kind of arbitrary? The black is a good all around mixer and occasional neat sipper. But now to keep themselves relevant or exciting they need to start putting out more well-thought out special releases (i.e. NOT White Walker lol). Sweet Peat seems like a step in the right direction, as was the rye cask.
They have the ability to shut up people like me instantly with an integrity blend - there are plenty more colours to choose. Purple Label anyone?
Regarding the GoT thing I was visiting Oban Distillery just after the tie in was announced. I commented to one of the staff that they were in the GoT whisky business now. He told me that they had no warning about it and didn't know anything before Diageo announced it on Twitter. Then having been told they were doing it there was some head scratching about what they were going to put in the barrels. So the whole thing seemed badly planned.
To be fair to Diageo, by the time the 7th season rolled around, Game of Thrones was still a fledgling niche series with a limited viewership...
@@JohnsDrams Incredibly difficult to get in the UK, but when I was living in the US I did love the GoT tie in beers from Ommegang a brewery in Cooperstown NY. They had a good stout called Take the Black.
I land here as I open my Johnnie Walker Discover box, accompanied by a full size bottle of the Green Label. I have to say, I used to be a JW hater because their Red Label had scared me away from whisky in the past. But I kinda liked their whole series. Now, of course, the Blue label is way too overpriced for what it offers. The 18 year old to me has a little "off" taste which I'm not quite able to explain. But the rest of the series, Black, Double Black, Gold Reserve, and Green are seriously good whiskies. Double Black and Green are my favorites as I am very into peat. Both of them well worth their buck. The Gold Reserve, it's not a dislikeable whisky, no. But I feel like it's the perfect whisky for people that are "into whiskey"; but only drink Jim Beam Honey or Jack Daniel's Honey, you know those types, right? For them, it would be the perfect step up to "real" whisk(e)y.
TLDR: Double Black & Green Label would be perfect daily sippers, and a great addition to a home bar in general.
I've been dipping more into my Green again and I'm getting more and more on board with it as I go.
Why? It's soooo damn good that's why.12:55
Funny, Platinum Label absolutely my favourite. Smooth, oily and a bit smoky. Best...
Black and Rye till I die
Was there a veiled Parks and Recreation reference there
It'd have to be, I've never watched it.
Old man and long time scotch drinker here. All I can tell you is most blended scotch in the USA has gotten worse. JW Red was a pretty decent drink decades ago. Now it tastes like slightly flavored alcohol. The only JW Scotch I like now are Black and perhaps Double-Black. The rest are not worth the price. You should know that I always preferred Dewar's White label Scotch but that has become completely undrinkable since the company wast taken over by Bicardi. It is just really bad. Oh and BTW- I always drink my Scotch neat.
Good man! Luckily there are blends more than happy to pick up the ball the older blend dropped.
I have to say I find the gold very poor. The sweetness of the flavor is good, but that makes the burn so much more off-putting. Something like the black (which I really like) isn't hurt anywhere near as much by a Johnnie Walker burn. That boozy roughness is horrid on what might otherwise be a "dessert" whiskey.
That rushed harshness is a signature of all the bottles they make so it's as close as you'll get from them.
