Track 12: Fiddle and the drum
    ________________________________________
    And so once again,
My dear Johnny, my dear friend,
And so once again you are fighting us all,
And when I ask you why,
You raise your sticks and cry, and I fall,
    Oh, my friend,
    How did you come?,
To trade the fiddle for the drum,
    You say I have turned,
    Like the enemies you´ve earned,
    But I can remember,
All the good things you are,
And so I ask you please,
Can I help you find the peace and the star?,
    Oh, my friend,
    What time is this?,
To trade the handshake for the fist
    And so once again,
    Oh, America my friend,
    And so once again,
    You are fighting us all,
And when we ask you why,
You raise your sticks and cry and we fall,
    Oh, my friend,
    How did you come,
To trade the fiddle for the drum
    You say we have turned,
    Like the enemies you´ve earned,
    But we can remember,
All the good things you are,
And so we ask you please,
Can we help you find the peace and the star?,
    Oh my friend,
    We have all come,
To fear the beating of your drum

Maynard you've done it yet again. First you've sent chills down our spines in the psychedelic vocals you've synchronized in the songs you've done with tool. And now we're shaking again. If all of today's artists saw the world the way you did, it'd be a beautiful world. Only if your influence struck all the people of the world.

@@cnt5189 that's correct. But that doesn't seem like an argument against it being an anti war song.

Somehow appropriate to be listening to this today, Memorial Day 2022. Thanks to the artist, composer, and service men and women.
Unfortunate this is the 53rd Memorial Day since written and we still struggle with war and man’s inhumanity to man

Some of MJK's best vocal work here, love hearing his harmonies in isolation, wonderful musicality, it's quite rare to hear him harmonise with himself in much of Tool/APC output

This song reminds me of my drug using days.. I used to listen to this album high on meth and pain pills while smoking weed and drinking... Hell of a combination.. But now ive been clean for 2 months and im working on my 3rd month clean and sober and working the steps! When ever i run into my using friends i think of this song. I hope they get to a meeting.. Cause believe it or not.. Druggies have beautiful souls just waiting to heal.

Im listening to this song and reading the comments and can't help but realize that it seems a lot of people are not getting the message. 'what time is this to trade the hand shake for the fist?" that is all.

I have to honestly say I have never heard a more beautiful rendition of Joni Mitchells' "The Fiddle and the Drum" than that of Maynard Keenan and APC.
I was waiting for the 11/01/2004 release of eMOTIVE in stores, as I just knew it was going to be beyond great.
So many powerful, amazing and creative renditions of past anti-war songs, as well as the couple that were written by Howerdel / Lohner / Keenan / Reznor
I literally cried when I heard "Passive"
I'll never tire of this one.

This is a beautiful and powerful song. It so accurately depicts the way I've felt about my country, which I love, for the past decade. We remember all the good things about America, and we want America to remember those things, too. It's never too late to do the right thing. Thanks to Billy, Maynard and the rest of APC for showing the courage to stand up for doing what's right in such a beautiful way.

I think it would be great if about 10,000 people went to DC. Sang this song at the National Mall. And then went home. Just to communicate this simple message. No banners, no huge movement, just a simple movement, unified by one song, one voice.

  • @Zeda1002

this is a song written a long ago by someone in deep consciousness of what US is doing globally. story is much deeper than just warring and resources. yes, resources are huge important part, but it's really a battle to take over every corner of this world - and wars are the way to achieve this when it is impossible to do it by other means. it's never good for the world and for the people to have one side to control it all. the more power you have, the less reason you have to least respect even the most basic human right: freedom. joni mitchell's song oozes musical creativity as much as it oozes author's thought, proving in every aspect the true authorship and the fact that human thought is still alive. even though it has to be earned

Peace is maintained through Mass violence and this world where you think the US is the bad guy is laughable. And if you believe that move to one of those other countries

The community choir in which I sing, BOM (born on a Monday) in Adelaide, South Australia has adopted - slightly adapted - this lovely creation of Joni Mitchell into our concert repertoire. I have been to the US many times. To me, this rendition by Perfect Circle captures exquisitely the deep sadness that now pervades the spirit of modern-day America. Is there any hope that the fiddle may again become integral to its core again?

I can only reply with the following.. keep in mind.. all action as a settler on this American land was done so in ways that eliminates any true warrant of pride or should be recognized by a raisi my of flag nor done so by claim of being countrymen or should such terms as valor, liberty, justice freedom or even equality shall yet be praised..that holds true more today than ever as the North American continent is still possessed by a race that in no way attained the land with anything other than thievery, dirty tactics, abusing the honor and trust of the Native by using ways that would not even be considered by one of the rarest species of human..their intelligence ,spirituality, dedication to our mother..Earth..their warrior pride and heart filled actions of defending the sick weak and unable the elderly have nothing to fear and are onltpy praised and respected by Native American where ijn all other cultures, ignorantly the elderly are not respected, heard, seen as the only true way of knowing but abused, kicked, passed around, ridiculed ,abandoned, seen as a nuisance to family and to our medical providers..without the sense to know they are only paving their even greater detachment to worth as they descend into a hell resembling a Miami like carnage, vultures hovering over the withered awaiting the chance to pick the bones clean of their rent controlled spaces and vintage belongings easily pawned off for drink, drug & enourmas plastic doses of cancerous oil based attention grasping devices...I digress..bottom line,NOTHING can be seen as peace, right, morally correct in action thought or principle until first and for most the Native American ppl are no longer forced to reside in desolate barren pieces of land unable to even produce much of what is needed but forced in Res communities suffering poverty at a level that ANO ghetto, hood or projects could even imagine...The natives don't get "food stamps" or endless assistance from govt state or MAN..Suicide is rampant due to the inability to grow and simply maintain..why do we feel that anything should be done for you,for me for another minority..while populating an area that should only be placed in the minds and decisions of the owners, the native beauty life that kept this continent clean and the ass inspiring wonderment that made other travelers speechless in her magnificence..do we need to completely disassemble and start over...no..can this be done without any major disruption to the lazy comforts we look to only fatten or cheapen..no..in fact those that do not wish to simply do this simple act of humanity doesn't have to stay and can easily return to their native land and the chaos involved in nearly all masses..the govt has no need nor right to intervene in the transformation..an ascending rising up of the common man..allowing Native to reinhabit, rezone re instate law or whatever the beautiful enslaved Native ppl seem fit.. t hat is the only way to begin any kind of Unity, pride, humanity or act of humanity, only way to even go on as the truth of our flag is not one that can harbor pride..it is based on bloodshed done so in a cowardly manner that should not be glorified as defeat or battle is was no such thing..the Native made onlyt one mistake and that was to trustingly let the foreign presence grow to a size that would be used against the hospititable, much more powerful, much more advanced and far greater example of human..only because the Native could see no man using such a victory depriving tactic..as it can only harbor shame for all those that take part, accept or evenacknjowledge such a tactic that can only be done by weak, unable, lesser human beings as no other kind could even allow such..inhumanity and disregard for others, their land proven by the indigenous qualities the land leaves on each of it dwelling inhabitors..give it back..or suffer here and abroad..we do not possess good intention..a will to see a bigger picture nor have we ever been a super power,a Victor in war if there is such a treacherous idea,or the right to demand other countries to become a democracy when we are not the thing we damand our gathered ppl of thousands ,kings and queens of many reaching back to the beginning of time itself..to be.We are a republic and a crooked, broken, immoral, murdering, thieving, lazy, expectant, republic at that..how dare our govt body claim superiority over land and ppl years deep in heritage knowledge practice and knowing that do not pollute, need to degrade or striop of resource like the good old now cancerous continent known as U.S.A. The Natives are dying and their hope is nearly dead..period..the most proud, most unique DNA comprised races of man that is still alive and somehow forced to suffer in poverty til deathl can still be celebrated..apologized too..thanked..respected..learned from..and asked that in our late but newly aware state of consciousness to be forgiven if nothing be understood as the result of an ignorant tyrant driven predecessor and we no longer wish to eliminate all chance to be seen as or carry on as the direct derivative that formed solely from an ugliness,a grossly huge act of sociopathic & inhumanity..retire the flag..help the Native American reclaim & if all ppl must leave or live in agreement to The land owners law..so be it

Without Joni, The reverend wouldn't have been able to sing this song.. . without Maynard I would have never heard Joni's version. We can only hope that we will learn. Losing hope, your faith in humanity, will only lead to a pessimism that will never cease. We must maintain optimism, and look forward to the day that we will learn how to end war. But, blind optimism aside...I do not believe that change will happen, if things continue the way they have been. Effort is not what will bring forth the change, rather a drastic occurance to snap the sheep out of their hypnotized trance of obedience.

The song refers to the United States, they are the "Friend". The song was written by a Canadian and so you can take the song's voice to be that of a friend to the United States. The singer is sad that the US has traded the fiddle for a drum. The fiddle symbolizes the friendly and cooperative nature many once perceived the USA to have. The drum refers to the more war prone tendencies the USA has been exhibiting. This song was originally written in 1969 around the Vietnam era.

i think u make a pretty valid point my friend, but this song is FOR America. its describing the state that the country has put itself in and the intense and unnecessary distrust and violence it has demonstrated towards the rest of the world. its not trying to point the finger however, its asking to help, to make things better and work towards a beter future. its just keepin it real son and not trying to blame anyone. Peace is great but it will never be. So long as people have their differences and those people are given some form of power then there will be no peace. still relative peace is a good thing to strive for i think
