As I mentioned in comments to another poster in this stream, I prefer the PR over all amps. And i have had in the past a 75 DR, 64 Vibroverb, 81 blackface Vibrolux. Still have a 67 VibroChamp. Oh, and I have a 57 Deluxe tweed clone that is pretty nice as well.

My dad passed an original 1965 Princeton down to me. I didn’t play it for years and passed it down to my son. Fast forward 20 years and I bought a ‘68 reissue. It was good. Then I bought a 1974 silver face Princeton. It just wasn’t all that good. Sold both as I moved on to Dr Z’s. Watched Jack’s video on the 57 Bassman Reissue, liked the sound. Bought one. Bought a 57 Custom Deluxe. Like the sound. Then my son who came home this weekend brought the 1965 princeton home for the weekend. I gotta say, sounds better than ALL my amps. I couldn’t believe my ears. Pure clean tone all the way up. It is just incredible. These days I wouldn’t spend several thousand on an original 1965 Princeton. But I may just buy me one of these reissues. Dog gone it Jack you and my kid have me spending money on amps like a drunken sailor!

I've played a Princeton '65 RI for years, and the love affair hasn't faded with time. Occasionally I buy an additional amp, just to see what it brings to the table, thinking, "who knows, maybe amps are even better these days, yet nothing has beat the Princeton, so I wind up returning the amps. Everything that Jack Fossett mentioned about the Princeton, I wholehearted agree with.

@@JackFossett The Bordeaux is amazing for cleans but I've had issues with drive pedals with it. I bought a Wampler Belle after seeing your videos and I also bought a JHS Bonsai for it. Really what helps it the most for me is an eq pedal taking out all the 8k! I much prefer my Pro Junior for rock sounds. That amp truly sounds amazing with any pedal. I find the 65 Princeton to be very picky with drive pedals .

I've had the '68 reissue for 6 years now and I LOVE it! I record with it all the time, and it's loud enough for practice and gigs. I put a Celestion Alnico Gold 10" speaker in, and I love it even more. Now I've decided to get the PRRI as well for that classic tone. I'm also putting an alnico Gold into that, as I just love what those speakers do. I also plan on running both amps in stereo for kicks. Both together are still only 24 watts. My 2,000.00 Mesa Lonestar Special has been sitting in the shed because to my ears it doesn't have the same magic as the humble Princeton. Anyway, the PRRI is coming tomorrow so I'm watching Princeton videos to pass the time. Thanks for all the cool content Jack!

Once had a guitar teacher and friend (who tunes piano's for a living), say to me "Brian get yourself a Strat or Tele, then get an amp that says Fender Princeton, regardless of Blackface, Siverface or what the cab is ; black, tweed, tolex, bordeaux , and be done with it, you're off and running."....Sage advice...Thanks again Jack, all the best.

I have had a second hand Princeton Chorus ('68 or 69 I think) for about 20 years. It was my go to for remote / outdoor gigs and did a great job with some help from a Tube Screamer cutting in sparingly. Easy to hand carry to remote locations like farm or riverside gigs
Also great for practise sessions in whatever venues we had access to.
I am in the process of educating my daughter of the tones and features available and she will own and love it for many years I'm sure. The only fault with the rig is that the foot pedal (drive / chorus) only operates the chorus. I can attest the only time it doesn't deliver is down to the player.
I have not run mine through the paces with treble / bass/ turned right down, but I will definitely be trying that out!
Thanks for the enlightening demo and discussion.

I run a Keeley compression into a Mooer Pure boost then into a Boss CE5 , I run the mono channel out into a signal splitter then out into both amps. It’s a great setup for slide, my axe is a 08 Fender telecaster with a ‘62 single coil in the bridge, the compressor and the clean boost is a deadly combo for sustain grit and tone. Hi Jack, Thanks for this. Very helpful. Yesterday I did a side-by-side at the store of a Blues Junior and a '65 Princeton reissue with the 12" Jensen. I got the Princeton. Mainly it's the versatility and the tones. My band is very vocal-centered, and we go from ballads to 60s-style rock, and in all cases, onstage volume needs to be kept down. So getting the great tones at lowish volume is a plus. We just completed an album, and in the studio I started out using a Blues Junior, then switched to a Deluxe, and finally wound up doing most of my tracks on a Princeton. For drive I use a Rat. Thanks again, great channel. Steve Taylor, The Fugs

Princeton is hugely versatile amp. I mean it legitimately can do every tone in our 70 song cover set. As long as you have a good pedal board and a good Keeley Compressor+ this amp, your board, and your guitar are all you need. It really does so much. As long as you're not playing super super high gain it blows everything else away.

I’ve been through a few Princetons in the past few years. The standard 65 PRRI can really do it all. I found that with the following EQ, it can sound like the 68 custom I had that came stock with a Celestion Blue 12” speaker - bass on 8, treble on 2, volume on 4. Perfect pedal platform! If you need more volume, put the treble all the way down, and the bass slightly lower. A tilt back stand works wonders. Mic the center of the speaker for larger venues. I recently put a Celestion V-Type Junior 10” in mine, just for fun. More efficient, warmer, still beautiful sparkle and nice midrange. My perfect Princeton would have a push-pull bright switch on the volume knob, and a midrange knob in the extension speaker jack, with tilt back legs. Hey, a guy can dream, right?? 😝🤘🎸

I sold all my bigger amps (Marshalls, Voxes and others) up to 100 watts long ago and usually play even weaker amps like the Marshall DSL-1 or the VOX Lil' Night Train.
I once bought it for my Gibson L5 Wes Montgomery which is the best combo I ever heard but it works perfectly with all my other 32 guitars as wells.

With your SG HB, i liked the amp's own overdrive sound better than the Tumnus's version of overdrive. In both instances where you're pushing the amp itself into overdrive, the sound is more "natural". Of course, with the Maxon demo, we are reminded of why so many Strat and Tele players pair up a TS-type pedal with Fender amps. The scooped-mid's of these Fender blackface amps mesh beautifully with a TS which adds some mid's back into the sound.

I got my PRR a few weeks ago and ❤ it. I have a Matchless DC30 clone that I built myself, great amp but way too loud, it does VOX tones beautifully, but I wanted classic Fender tones for my Strat. The PRR is heavenly for classic Fender tones without ruptured eardrums. Oh, and it’s a quarter of the weight of my DC30.

Hey Jack I have the same 65 PRRI amp. Think I agree on all points, very thoughtful. As you point out I really love how full it sounds on low volumes. I find the stock speaker helps with that as its rather inefficient- but the upside there is that those who are concerned about “keeping up” can always swap to a higher efficiency speaker. I did swap the speaker in mine, but not to get louder. Went with a Jensen alnico P10R as I was chasing a bit of the 64 hand wired reissue vibe. Very happy but honestly the stock speaker is wonderfully paired too.

I really enjoy your content, Jack. You play well and your opinions are spot on, from an experienced standpoint. I love Fender amps and I am digging this Princeton reverb reissue. The best amp (for me) was an early 60's Fender Tremolux. Not the most common or popular, but man, that thing was blissful...What do you think of Musicman amps? I believe they may be the best I've played through, with few exceptions. I don't know why, but they just speak to me, especially the cleans...I'm digging some Vox amps too, strictly from the cleans...I am a simpleton and judge all amps by their clean tones. I feel like I can do most anything with an amp, within my capabilities, if it has a great clean tones. Anyway, sorry for rambling...I like this Princeton reissue. Beautiful sounding piece of gear. Thanks man

Another newb to the Princeton amp world here. Just bought a 65 PRRI Bordeaux with 12" Jensen and so far I'm pretty impressed with it. I've only had it a few days but have put alot of hours on it so far. It does take pedals very well. For overdrive I use The Dude by J. Rocket Audio and a Nobels ODR mini. Both are great pedals for me.
I've been playing through a 65 DRRI modded with bright cap clipped, a slightly increased bias and a Weber speaker that I love. It's been a great amp at home and live. Not sure if I'll use the Princeton live much yet but I will try it out soon.
On a side note using an A/B switch and playing thru both amps at the same time is killer!
Enjoyed your video and I'll be looking for more to come.

The Fender Blackface earned my respect on stage. I was at a show and this cat was playing a Les Paul with P-90's through a blackface deluxe (I think) He had it loud. It was cutting through the mix so much, but it never sounded harsh, or shrill, it just sounded like perfection. Like a studio mastered track. I'm torn between the 65' Princeton and the 57' Tweed Champ. I think the Princeton wins out on versatility and the bigger speaker. Thinking about going Princeton and finding a quality 5E3 circuit pedal for the tweed tones.

But who knows, maybe live gigging is in the future for me. My favorite tones are the cleans (duh...fender). The cleans are reedy, yet somehow still supple and just full of life. The harmonic overtones are just off the charts. So pristine and pure a tone, as close to an acoustic steel string as an electric tone gets. The compression gives it a nice bitey bark in the middle of the dial. And of course past 3o'clock the bottom end collapses right into the mid range, making for a unique fuzz tone all it's own. Lovin it.

I worked my way up the fender ladder from a silver face Champ to a silver face Vibro Champ then to a silver face Princeton Reverb in the early 70’s . All nice amps I wish I still had, however at the time the Princeton wasn’t loud enough, so I graduated to a Peavey 100 watt, then a music man rd100 then to a Fender 75 which was a pseudo boogie and then I added Bugera v22 and a v 5 before my Mesa Express 5 50 + which covers all my needs.

I used to gig at this hippy dippy health food restaurant in Hollywood in the 80s called Natural Fudge. They had a house amp, a Princeton Reverb Silverface. I would boost it with a Tube Screamer or whatever pedal I had and run a chorus and that was it. The thing sounded amazing with my '61 strat. The first time I showed up to a gig at Natural Fudge I brough a Marshall Plexi half stack and felt like a real jackass. The stage was so small I had to set the amp in front of the stage. Then I thought, "If I knew they had these Princeton I'd have left the Marshall at home instead of moving furniture." I loved playing through that Princeton on subsequent gigs. Best sounding Princeton I ever played. I'm not sure on the year of that Princeton but I'd guess late 60s. I wish I owned it.
