    I am Tom Saguto, PGA Member and founder of SagutoGolf. Thank you for visiting my instructional page where you can find how to get on the fast track to improving your golfing abilities. Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
    My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
    My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

      I'm glad you are enjoying my instruction content, Bob, and I hope you heal up well and are able to get back out there soon!
      This is a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.
      Have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. So many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. Here's a link if you would like to know more about the school - saguto.golf - and here's a link to my free mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” if you’re interested in checking it out: go.saguto.golf/
      You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing and experience great ball striking. I hope you'll give the school some thought.
      Thanks!

    Tom, the timing of this video was perfect for me. Yesterday I struggled hitting any shots with any success. This video reminded me to use my torso to swing. I realized that I was initiating my backswing with my hands. Today I had my best round in forever as I concentrated on turning my chest in both the backswing and follow through. I started with some half swings that were going straight and almost my full distance. By the end of the round I taking full swings and getting great distances with a slight draw. Everything about your swing that I have been working just seemed to fall into place.

      That's fabulous, Jim - congrats on your round!! We can do great things if we eliminate any active handsy manipulations and simply entrust the motion to the big muscles. Here's another recent episode to this point: ua-cam.com/video/1FLm67Fn81M/v-deo.html

      Mr. Hogan delivered phenomenal and timeless instructional value, right?! But there are just so many misconceptions about his swing out there - particularly within the realm of misunderstood or misapplied instruction - that have sadly relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. I'm doing my best here to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness by taking what Mr. Hogan conveys in the “Five Lessons” book as his "feels", applying it to the reality of what he actually did in his swing, and translating it into something we all can learn well from. Because if we can get Hogan right there are tremendously effective swing keys to be garnered.

      Yes!! I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results.

    I noticed that both you and Ben Hogan move the lead hip about 4-5 inches to the left as you begin the downswing transition. Mr. Hogan begins to move the hip even before his swing fully sets at the top. The knees move, of course, but it appears the shift to the left with the hips really gets things going.

      There is no contrived lifting action in this swing. The arms elevate as a result of maintaining our connections and in response to the combined tilting, turning, and extending motions. If I lifted them independently then my lead arm would be noticeably above my shoulder line at the top.
      Try this: Get into address posture with your relationship to the ball established and keep your upper arms connected to your sides. Now allow your lead arm to cross your chest 45 degrees as you try to point your shirt buttons to the sky. Now have a look in the mirror as to how high your hands and arms are without the need for any independent lifting!

    Hogan was not “hands/arms then hips” that was Nicklaus. Hogan was a pure one piece swing where the way he lowered the club and counter-rotated the arms inward with “towel wringing pressure” pulled the arms into ribcage into a tight V and aligned the lead elbow down opposite the way it hinges so the force in the backswing makes it biomechanically impossible to bend. Note in the illustrations in Five Lessons and photos and videos the bulging Brachioradials muscle running over the top of the lead elbow. That’s the result of the counter rotation as arms lower and pushing down on the lead hand with the slightly bent trail arm which makes it impossible to move hands and club except by moving the shoulders, which he did in sync with the hips for the first 45° of the swing arc until his squared, metal spike planted foot stopped the hip rotation triggering the club head to whip up around the hands with so much force it pulls the shoulders 45° past the hips and lead arm tight across the chest loading it like a leaf spring.
    Like Snead, Hogan had an exceptional range of “thumbs-up” radial deviation in his wrists. Most can only get 90° with thumb up 👍 but Hogan and Snead could bend back their thumbs far more at the top and the more lag created that way on the way up the more the club can gain force by whipping around the hands on the way down. We can all learn from Hogan’s Five Lessons but unfortunately Most of us can’t ever hope to swing exactly like Hogan - lord knows I tried - because we don’t have the same range of movement in our joints.

    Re: Hogan's movement to the right, in takeawy. This actually simplifies the swing and makes it easier to get onto the left side at the top. He activates the muscle down the left side of his right leg at address- it is easier to do this if you raise your position, slightly- this cocks his head to the side, slightly. Then, when his head actively cocks to the side, in the takeaway, it actually moves the right hip back. And, this enables a player to increase the angle of their right leg in the backswing; and, to turn onto their left side.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      I don't have a problem with a brief shift in pressure into the trail side during the takeaway prior to getting into the lead side. This can occur naturally since the arms and club have weight to them as they are being taken back off the ball. However, a shift is not necessary, and to me it is easier to maintain the swing center - and also far easier on the body - for the lead knee to work straight down in its preestablished outward orientation (rather than kicking inward) while the trail knee straightens, facilitating an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn as the tailbone moves targetward.

    • @DASH1ful
      @DASH1ful Рік тому +1

      @@SagutoGolf well, yes. external rotation of the left knee, at address, is key to left knee compression. the rotation of the body can then direct force into knee as it rotates slightly and points directly in front. the knee is turned out, at address, by activating muscle in the right side of the left calf. and, this counters the right leg when the muscles down the left side of the leg are activated.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  6 місяців тому +1

      How to initiate the downswing is a loaded question, Steve, because it is so dependent on individual tendencies that I cannot give a generalized answer. For example, if I tell you that it's a lateral hip slide but your downswing already naturally has sufficient forward force, then you'll hit pushes and/or hooks all day long, and if I tell you to rotate your hips but you are already naturally applying enough outward force, then your destination is pull/slice city. I could also say the shoulders, or dropping the hands, or getting the lead arm off the chest, or rolling your trail foot targetward, or increasing pressure into the lead leg, etc. Whew! You get what I'm saying, right?....
      This is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. Nice vid as always, Tom. Maybe there is one minor supplementary instruction you should address....the right knee. The right leg can be straightened but make sure your knee cap doesn't lock it dead straight. From your video, maybe it was the angle shot problem, your right leg showed it got really straightened which might give some viewers a wrong impression. Just a suggestion if you agree with me. =)

      I appreciate the advice, Victor.
      The trail knee straightens but does not lock as you correctly say. I've never mentioned locking it, and in other videos I have specifically instructed not to.
      It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing.

    some say that the right hip should move back. some say the right hip should turn. but, it does both. hogan told us not to turn the hip in the takeaway. and, in all truth he didn't turn his hip in the takeaway. but, it didn't stay in a stationary position. he moved it back. then in the second half of his backswing, his hip turned. but, the movement was passive and not active. bill mehlhorn explains it best in his video, in which he tells us that we should turn just as we would if someone appeared behind us when we were stood over the ball. the muscles in the left side of the right leg activate to move the hip back to enable the left chest to turn. it is easier if you do this with just your left hand on the club. And, when you have turned, to look up, you can return your head to the address position by pressing down with the left side of your head. Then just swing back with your left arm, putting your right hand on the club as you swing back. This increases the turn, greatly.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      The earlier version of Mr. Hogan's swing certainly had some shifting back-and-forth going on, but thanks to his legendary range work he was able to master his coordination of these moves to excel at the game's top level. Post-accident, his swing was much more centered, and he was definitely getting into his lead side earlier in the backswing as indicated by his unrestricted tilted hip turn and his tailbone-to-target action. This was a much simpler - and obviously far more body-friendly - motion that still delivered for him that same ball striking consistency.
      The centered motion is far more prevalent among today's top players, and because of the stable center and low point it provides - along with the elimination of the need for any contrived body restrictions and torquing - I believe it to be the best way for amateurs to learn and play as well.
      Cheers!

      @@SagutoGolf Yes, Hogan swung off the ball early on in his career- even up to late 1947. It is said that Power Golf was written in early 1947. And, we can clearly see how how Hogan's body leaned to the right in the takeaway, in Power Golf. He was able to double back; and, realign himself towards the top of his backswing; but, this bends the spine and causes recoil. In late '47 he said he needed to develop a swing that was less stressful on his body. When he won the U.S Open in '48 his arms didn't force their way back and strain against his right leg, in his takeaway. The "inside muscles" down the left side of his right leg were a very dominant feature in his U.S Open victory. Later on in his career he introduced external rotation of the left knee, at address; which helped him to counter the movement of his arms; and, helped him to get more into a left left position at the top- as you, also, do.

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому +1

      Yes. And that later version was a much more centered motion and far easier on the body - features that would certainly benefit the vast majority of amateurs who are trying to hack their way out of the jungle of shifting, lifting, swaying, twisting, restricting, torquing, and flipping.
      It's always nice to find common ground...

      Yes - this is Stack & Tilt, and I am a certified S&T instructor. Here is the story of my "conversion": ua-cam.com/video/PM8lNNrMPEk/v-deo.html And here is an episode documenting my week at S&T Instructor Camp in Miami: ua-cam.com/video/m9qdPOzYUWU/v-deo.html
      I find it rather intriguing and perhaps even a bit of a disturbing commentary on the human condition when I see just how far some folks will go - and how vehemently polarized they are - when it comes to defending the particular golf swing methodology they happen to embrace, and how their way is the only correct way and everything else - particularly Stack and Tilt - is evil sorcery and wrong?? This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top.
      As for "Will it be helpful for Amateur golfers", consider the fact that thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well).

    Is all the weight on your lead side on the backswing?

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  2 місяці тому

      Hi Sam,
      No. In the swing system I teach we start with our weight forward (generally 55/45 for the short and mid irons, 60/40 for the longer clubs). We achieve this by addressing the ball "stacked", shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips 1" towards the target while keeping everything else in place. That presets a little more weight forward while retaining the stacked relationship. During the swing we gradually add more forward weight load into the transition (70/30), 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. The upper torso/head - and thus the swing center - remains in place during the increasing forward weight load in the downswing. There's no "weight shift"; instead, it's just a gradually increasing load onto the lead side. And the result is a centered, low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing.
      While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews

    as you say, hogan said that he wished he had two right hands. but, i wonder if he wished that he had two right clavicles, also. and, could it be, that his right clavicle prevented him from hooking the ball to the degee that he felt as though he could play with 2 right hands. i guess we will never know.

      @@SagutoGolf yes, for me the most curious thing about Hogan's swing method is that he doesn't allow the lower part of his right arm to be pulled towards his left arm, as he waggles the club. given the fact that he told us to bunch our arms up together it does seem surprising that he should hold his right arm back; and, keeps his elbow over his "watch pocket", in the waggle. so, maybe his right elbow had something to do with his secret. but, i guess that is another thing we are never going to know for sure.

      @DASH1ful Рік тому

      @@SagutoGolf yes, i commented on it. but, i would have to say that the hogan swing sequence that my absolute proof, video, highlights proves that there was no magic elbow. hogan's right elbow clearly moved down whilst the club was still moving back. and, it would be physically impossible to do this by actively moving the elbow down. the club would have to move down with the elbow if the elbow actively moved down. so, really, the real magic is that he was able move his elbow down without trying to move it down. it has, also, been said that hogan actively moved his left hip forwards in the second half of his backswing. but, hogan's right leg continued to straighten in the second half of his backswing; and, if the left hip actively moved forwards it would be virtually impossible for the leg to continue to straighten.

      It's all about making physics & geometry work effectively within the realm and confines of our own human physiology and psychology, Cecil. No need to reinvent the wheel. When laws and constants can peacefully coexist with our unique set of individual variables, a good golf swing can be the outcome!
      If you view enough of my instruction videos you'll come to notice that I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the same desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why thousands across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result (and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews ). The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness.

This enables me to put my eyes on your swing and offer some very specific observations and corrective action plans if applicable. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolf

    • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  3 місяці тому

      Your shanks can be the result of a variety of actions, Gordon: 1) You may be too steep on the downswing and thereby exposing the hosel to the ball; 2) Conversely, your downswing path may be too in to out; 3) You may be rolling the face open during the backswing; 4) Your wrists may not be hinging properly (which is often the case when a golfer tries to manufacture or force the hinge rather than just allowing it to happen); 5) You are setting up with the ball positioned at the heel of the club; 6) You are losing your pre-established relationship with the ball (i.e.: a deficiency in the Tilt component); 7) More... What I'm getting at is that there are a number of potential causes, and without actually seeing your swing it's impossible for me to identify the culprit behind those hosel rockets.
      FYI, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish. • @SagutoGolf
      @SagutoGolf  Рік тому

      Yes. No matter which club you are swinging, in the backswing the lead knee always works straight down in the direction established at address - which should be flared slightly outward towards the target. This keeps the weight forward and the swing center intact. Any inward movement of the lead knee will shift the center and low point backwards. This can lead to inconsistency and may also cause some discomfort to the knee.
