My Grandad was in the 5th DCLI which was part of 43 wessex division , ive recently researched the battles etc he was involved in from his records and the battalion records . He started in Caen july 44 , until the end of the war . The things all veterans went through ( and go through ) i have so much respect.
My father was also involved in the hill 112 drive in a Lloyd carrier with a mortar team he also went all the way through the war to Berlin respect to all those soldiers
My great grandad was in the 107th RAC, B squadron, as the forward gunner and Co driver on board the briton, under the command of lt.fothergill, who was sadly killed in the battle by an 88. The Churchill was said to be destroyed but the rest of the crew survived as the LT had my grandad and the other crew members keep the doors open on the latch, which saved their lives
I would love if they would have made a similar veteran interview documentary regarding operation veritable and specifically the battle of the Reichswald, that would have been very interesting as well
Thanks, I really enjoyed this. My Grandfather was in the 43rd Wessex Div in the 260 Co RE and was with the division to the end of the war. He won the MM rescuing the airborne troops at Arnhem.
How often have we heard "the British failed to take Caen" by those who've entirely missed the point? Never let this be forgotten: the British and Canadian armies selflessly drew down upon themselves the bigger and better part of the German Wehrmacht in Normandy - including veterans from the Russian Front - thus buying with their lives a greater opportunity for their American allies to succeed in breaking-out from the Cherbourg peninsular.
If I am not mistaken, 43rd Wessex were supported by the 44th RTR during this time. Either 'B' or 'C' Squadron were moved up to their positions. My relative was there with the 44th as well.
Monty's Men by John Buckley , a relatively recent book is a good read. Modern research, with information now declassified, uncluttered by Hollywood scriptwriters, should enable anyone with an open mind, to gain a fairly accurate understanding of these events....events , which the men who appear in this video, had first hand experience of.

My father took part in that battle in his Churchill tank.He never wanted to talk about it but he told me he lost 16 comrades in the space of 6 weeks.

This is really fantastic work, I'm extremely grateful it was made and that it's still available. Thank you.
