  • This video is a rough cut documentary released to mark the 70th anniversary of Operation Jupiter in Normandy 1944. Many veterans think that this battle has been overlooked in many of the histories written since the war and this documentary gives them the chance to tell their own story. Unfortunatly through limited resources we are missing whole chunks of this story such as the very important attack on Maltot. Despite many attempts we could not find Veterans from the infantry that attacked that village so this NOT an all inclusive and Im sure those who have tried to sabotage my efforts for commercial reasons will very soon be posting negative comments. To them I say you have denied many veterans the chance to speak like those you see here, Shame on you !. My intention is to make a full documentary about Hill 112 and I need veterans and their families to get in touch with me for veteran interview or publishing written accounts to build a much fuller picture. This project has been helped hugely by Rex Cadman, the War and Peace show who gave me permission to film at their events. Albert Figg has been the Alpha and Omega of this project including funding some filming and this would not have happened without his determination !!. Graham Mathias, a great man who died of cancer two years ago believed in and supported this project all the way loaning camera and editing equipment that he bequeathed to me to finish the job, a most generous and remarkable man who I greatly miss. Thanks to the very many who have helped from reenactors to vehicle owners who over the years have given support. Much of that material is being retained for the final edit.My maps didn't work so I have borrowed some from Chester Wilmots "Struggle for Europe" book (ISBN 9781853266774) truly inspirational and is essential for anyone who wants to understand this period. This version will go and be replaced with a higher re one with the maps shortly Please contact Hill112documentary@gmail.com and check out the facebook page at Hill112documentary?fref=ts

My Grandad was in the 5th DCLI which was part of 43 wessex division , ive recently researched the battles etc he was involved in from his records and the battalion records . He started in Caen july 44 , until the end of the war . The things all veterans went through ( and go through ) i have so much respect.

How often have we heard "the British failed to take Caen" by those who've entirely missed the point? Never let this be forgotten: the British and Canadian armies selflessly drew down upon themselves the bigger and better part of the German Wehrmacht in Normandy - including veterans from the Russian Front - thus buying with their lives a greater opportunity for their American allies to succeed in breaking-out from the Cherbourg peninsular.

My great grandad was in the 107th RAC, B squadron, as the forward gunner and Co driver on board the briton, under the command of lt.fothergill, who was sadly killed in the battle by an 88. The Churchill was said to be destroyed but the rest of the crew survived as the LT had my grandad and the other crew members keep the doors open on the latch, which saved their lives

If I am not mistaken, 43rd Wessex were supported by the 44th RTR during this time. Either 'B' or 'C' Squadron were moved up to their positions. My relative was there with the 44th as well.

I would love if they would have made a similar veteran interview documentary regarding operation veritable and specifically the battle of the Reichswald, that would have been very interesting as well

Monty's Men by John Buckley , a relatively recent book is a good read. Modern research, with information now declassified, uncluttered by Hollywood scriptwriters, should enable anyone with an open mind, to gain a fairly accurate understanding of these events....events , which the men who appear in this video, had first hand experience of.
