THANK YOU SO MUCH! You saved me from constant frustration every time my adapter wiggled loose from so much as a pothole. This solution is simple but so effective.
I found another method that works very well...place a small strip of adhesive Velcro (fuzzy side, not hook side) on both sides of the plug...it works great! Plug will fit nice and tight.
Very well done thank you brother!! This is one of those things that they really don't focus on fixing. So not many companies are going to come out with something so it's really good that you came out with this thing
Thanks for the advice. I didn't have any plastic refuse in my recycle container but I'm a retired Master Electrician so I have several million nylon ty-wraps. I cut the end off a 7-inch black ty-wrap and inserted it into the socket with the GPS plug and it works great. I used a 4-inch ty-wrap to hold it to the cord for safe keeping. I used black because this is for my Victory Cross Country Tour motorcycle and it's all black. I appreciate your idea!
Thank you! I just bought a used electrical cooler, got it home, & the connection was too lose. After watching your vid, I found a zip tie & now she’s working! 🎉
Thank you for posting this. You might also want to just add that this is basically a shim, which will help people who do carpentry/etc. to understand even better. But great idea - I cannot wait to try this out on my converted van - I rely on these 12v plugs in about 3 different places. It's really frustrating when I've plugged in my phone, only to find out that it's slipped out and my phone is dead. Can't wait to try this!
The whole power outlet needs re-design: it’s based on the old pop-out cigarette lighter that most people don’t need anymore! Why don’t they thread those outlets? I’m tired of my whole USB adapter popping out whenever I pull out my USB.
Thank you for showing us how to use a shim to fix this problem. I tried this with plastic (from a yogurt container) but I think they were to thin. I read the comments and someone posted about useig an adhesive velcro and that did the trick. I used the hook part of a velcro comand strip. I cut a very small one in half and tappered the edges. My connections are now very tight and do not wiggle out while driving.
This worked great! I just used a Taco bell cup I had laying on the floor of my car. Cut a half inch by 3 inch strip, stuck it in with charger. It was still loose, so folded the plastic length wise. That was good, but still a little loose. So cut another strip, and made it 3 layers thick - PERFECT. I then just cut off the excess that was sticking out, because I don't plan to take it in and out much. That, and there will always be more taco bell cups.
Thanks for posting that and making it findable. The plug for my 12vt fridge in my motorhome keeps wiggling loose so I'm going to try your idea or one of those in the comment thread. A couple of commentators have warned against adjusting the actual plug and possibly making the problem worse, so I won't be doing that.
Mine is similar, but I take a business card, cut a small amount like in the video, and take some electrical tape and tape it to both sides (opposite the side n metal pieces). This way it's snug, and you can swap it out and put in other lighter plugs as well. If you need slightly more snugness after putting the small bit of business card on, just use one more layer of electrical tape, that way it will snug up in millimeters. Mine never take more than 2 layers of electrical tape
Solution: "have it in there a little bit loose. I take my gizmo, shove it down just a ¼ inch, but you might need to go deeper depending how sloppy your fit is"
Instead of a hard plastic, use a thick rubber band works better and no outward slippage too when tugged a little. Then trim off the excess rubber band if you do decide its a long term use.
This is a problem with European cars, the sockets are wider than the plugs we all use, these plugs are generic in size and made for cars that are either American or Japanese/Korean. I learned this first hand in my dad's 2001 Mercedes, I ought to use these tips now to fix that problem for all of my accessories. Thanks!
Thanks! Nicely done! But have you given any thought to prying the inside contacts away from the sides toward the center. I found that in my car that these create the retention required to keep lighter adapters in place. You can still use a piece of that plastic strip to keep the contacts away from the inner sides of the port.
some adapters are tight and some are not so this is an adapter issue, not an issue with the prongs in the lighter socket. I prefer not to modify a good part(socket) just because another item(the adapter) is poorly made. Plus if you overdo bending the prongs, then you create a real unnecessary problem.
Wowww... Will you give me a great idea for my solution... I just bought a brand new vehicle cooler fridge and the plug would actually slide out... So not only was mine loose and losing connection but it also slowly would work its way back out for a poor connection. I contacted the seller and asked for a replacement plug and they just sent me money to buy my own...lol.. with no questions asked well that's okay... But I really wanted to use this fridge today so I used your idea... Anyone that wants to skip the crap that I just wrote... I took a straw folded it and stuck it in between the spring to make the string more stiff... I did it on both sides of the springs holy crap this thing's not budging...🥰 ..
You can stick a screw driver in there and bend the prongs out towards the center of the socket. That only lasts for so long until you'll have to do it again. Make sure there's no power to the socket before you sick anything in there.
Dude!!! thx!!! wad about to order a new kit for 30 bucks for a speaker set up in my side by side that runs off lighter. when I hit bumps it comes out. will try this first. I think it's gonna work!!! Genius! :)
Honestly, I’ve struggled for years with this crap. Spent 1 minute watching this, found a thin piece of metal in my car, did the thing. And fixed it instantly. I wish I’d thought of this literally 10 years ago.
YuDaMan yeah, the fact it can short the full 12V is less than ideal. I just put it in the very top for now, and my phone actually charged up! I’ll sort something less conductive out when I’m home. If you put a strip of aluminium all the way down, you’re going to blow a fuse at the very least.
@@YuDaMan the sides of the socket are the ground and the point is the +12v hot. i won't say it's idea, but the risk is relatively low using a metal and the side (assuming you don't push the metal to the +12v) and not bent towards the center of the bottom. thanks for this tip, it really helped!
I've never EVER seen one of those plug/sockets that will stay plugged in. Would think engineers could come up with something better. At least now I won't have to drive with one hand holding the damn plug anymore.

Thank you sir. That's worked a treat for me and a lot tidier 👍👍👍 from the uk
I LIKE the idea ... even BETTER than mine!
This^. That worked great in my 89 930. Very clean.
Works for awhile but ended up with sticky plug n socket. After awhile the glue gives up on the velcro.

I have a ton of cable ties - is that what you are talking about? And I can't quite visualise the set up - do you have any pictures?

just buy a 5 cents rubber O ring and put it around the adaptor. Cheap, simple and looks like its part of the adaptor.
Looks like you could just stick some duct tape to it.
Use your bit of plastic to bend the 2 prongs inside at the base of the charging port in slightly and it should fix your issue permanently.

Why do cars still have that horrible socket

Rubber bands melt in heat and degrade over time... Will make a mess eventually.
This helps so much! Thank you!!
That helps it not move but for my car, the sides of chargers don't touch so I'm guessing this wouldn't make them wider to where they'll touch...

@@YuDaMan I think that you are right! Its only my cheaply made in ...somewhere out east adapters that cause me this problem. You sir are very wise!
I've had good adapters get looser over time. So I think it's the springs that press the side contacts outward losing tension
Thanks buddy, worked a treat
I have a sloppy receptacle and I used a piece of doubled bicycle inner tube.
I have found the receptacles in general are ok. It's the adapter plugs that are less than good quality.
U can use two burnt match sticks also.

Ahh that would be there is not a groove to accomadate to two outer prongs...those give pressure to the unit to stay in place
I dumped a bunch of J B weld in there, doesn't move now.
