Just How Powerful is P-8 Poseidon
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 вер 2020
- The P-8 Poseidon is truly a multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft, excelling at anti-submarine warfare; anti-surface warfare; intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and search and rescue. The P-8 Poseidon can fly higher and get to the fight faster.
Shorter transit times reduce the size of the Area of Probability when searching for submarines, surface vessels or search and rescue survivors. P-8 Poseidon is also designed for low altitude missions and has already proven its abilities supporting humanitarian and search and rescue missions. Globally proven, the P-8 Poseidon has two variants: The P-8 Poseidon, flown by the Indian Navy, and the P-8A Poseidon, flown by the U.S. Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force.

VP-8 at Brunswick Naval Air Station Reunion. I served in Patrol Squadron Eight from 1982-1986. The P-8 was designated the "P-8" by three members of the development crew. They all served in Patrol Squadron 8 while I served simultaneously.
I think it was a really good move to use the 737. Having grown up in a Navy town knowing plenty of folks who worked on and flown the Orion's (including my dad) one of the biggest issues was parts availability. Having to scavenge parts off other aircraft or travel long distances to get them etc. -vs- now in a pinch you can get 737 parts pretty easily.
Another great thing is that the military guys are super experience on aircraft they can fly commercially when they get out. Although dad used to say that the commercial pilots who were reservists were the roughest on the planes because they could have a little more fun beat on them more than they could the planes they flew at their day jobs
I was an avionics tech on P-3s in the early 1970s. We had a branch officer that was a PPC and he was only an ensign. He went to college in the NROTC program and on his own got a pilots license and flew Charter Electras from Pennsylvania to Florida while in college He told me he didn’t get any FAA certifications from the Navy as he had them all before he went on active duty.
Logistics can be rough on old aircraft. In the late 1970s I was an avionics tech on the Lockheed T-33A trainer. Long out of production by then, we'd sometimes have to scavenge parts from display aircraft at other bases. Only so many old parts to go around.
@@lancerevell5979 heck, the P3B had a lot of equipment that still had tubes. Also the markers for the tactical display was analog. There was a bunch of mechanical devices turning that drove the markers around on the old green screen

The 737/C-135 is the workhorse of the US military. It is configured in a wide range of options and all are top notch. You know your aircraft.
The heavy demand is that this is a quality aircraft both in design and ingenuity! A friend of mine did a short stint on one and loved it!
The P-8 Poseidon has arrived succesfully to Bali, Indonesia to help us find our lost submarine.
Many thanks to uncle Sam, hopefully the submarine is going to be found soon !
They found it... just not in the way you’d expect. It’s in three pieces 2,790 feet below the surface. All 53 crew members had no possibility of surviving the implosion.

India also has ordered 8 Poseidons out of which 4 have been delivered and rest will be delivered by 2021.
Poseidon played vital role to detect Chinese intrusion of Indian territories in June 2020. It detected tunnels built by Chinese under Sino - Indian border, after which Indian armed forces responded immediately.

This is one absolutely awesome airplane. It's an amazing 737 airframe, with the raked wingtips. For what it's used for, it makes the US military front so much stronger. The 737 airframe was the perfect choice by the Navy. The Boeing P-8 Poseidon, has the ability to detect enemy forces from far away. The $180 million dollar price tag, also gives it the ability to be refueled in the air, and stay airborne for long lengths of time.
Very surprised at the absolute zero mention of India, whom was the first international customer and the second largest operator of the aircraft.
This is purposefully avoided. If he can find so many prospective customers. How can he miss India among the few users

Theirs is different. It is a P-8I, not P-8A
Concur that the video should have mentioned the P-8I but it is technically a different variant with different sensors including 360 degree radar coverage and a MAD sensor.
Good report.
I flew P-3 Orions for 20 years (SS-3). I'm sad that they're done, but very happy with the legacy we left. New generation, keep rockin kids!
Thanks for poseidon 8 in help Menggala Indonesia you are best.
This is the coolest thing ever
A great bit of kit! 👍
Awesome.. we will be getting P8 and we still operate P3 Orion with our RNZAF 👍🇳🇿
That would be an awesome combination for finding subs, SAR & so on... P8 up top, P3 down low
Then your guys can have a cup of tea with our RAAFy P8's over the 'ditch' somewhere. I consider NZ like our little sister, we have to look after each other. Loved the P3B, and C's but we had to move on. Both P'8's and their forbears are great planes. Was a good choice by our respective airforces. Cheers from this side of the ditch.
@@brianmorris8045 G'day same to you👍🇳🇿
Here in northern Norway I see this plane almost every week, as I live just a few miles from its base. :)
In 2002 it's safe to assume that the pilot was ordered to damage that aircraft without provoking war to gain intelligence on how Electronic warfare works.
A guess death is a pretty good excuse
Would still have been interesting to put the Poseidon up against the (cancelled) Nimrod MR4, as the older Nimrods used to consistantly out-perform the P3 Orion.
I worked at Tinker AFB and there is a TACAMO Navy wing there and dollar for dollar this is the best aircraft in the Navy's inventory.
Sniffer that picks up diesel fumes was used on P-3As and was discontinued on the P-3Bs I am sure it is upgraded, but it isn’t a new type of sensor.
Most advanced plane
I love the P-8 it can fly in the South China Sea without a problem from PLA
@BenLoco48st happened a few days ago while the Philippine Coast Guard tried to deliver goods on our station in the spratlys again after being bullied by Chinese CG the first time, a Poseidon was spotted flying above the contested waters
Yes please 👍
Good to know.
I think the P8 is a really impressive beast. Doesn’t look like much of a threat, but damn!
Ah.. but the 727 had 3 engines and a ramp. Wheelchair accessible.
Doesn't look a threat, but it is. Great aircraft. It has to live up to the other 'P's' in the family...lol. They laid the standards for following modern navigation aircraft.

p3 man i love p8 for sure but p3 what a beautiful turboprop plane that was
It would be interesting to see an Army or Airforce version of the 737. You could carry two crews and have extremely long loitering times. It would probably be great for supporting special operations teams using SMDB. With all the onboard sensors, it could probably also run counter battery work.
I saw both the Aircraft at my last duty location… but never really knew what they did, just a brief summary. And now I know. Lol
P8 Posiedon. The stuff of nightmares to subs.
This just confirms my beliefs that the 737 should have raked wingtips. They make every plane Boeing plane much more beautiful. I know that Boeing says raked wingtips are more effective on wide body planes and they don't want to exceed the wing length for a plane of that class. But come on! They look so good! The P8 is such a scary looking 737. I think the Max is absolutely gorgeous... but I think the P8 looks a bit better. Slap on the Leap engine with chevrons and you'd have one of the best looking planes ever made.
ik they look cool but airlines prefer efficiency. i could try this in x plane
I work on these in VP16
Wasn't the Hainan incident in ~ April 2001?
I see these fly over my home every day it's like they are my best friend lmao

Saw these aircraft flying out of RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, Northern Scotland as we're on the Scottish town's beach the base is located just West of Lossiemouth and next to the Moray Golf Club.
Nice bird, but P3C was class act. Singing Alison engine's, low and slow for hours. Served the navy for many years.
Somewhere I read that p-3 pilots would shut down 2 engines to get more endurance out of their aircraft. And 8000 mile hops were made at times.
@@iannarita9816 Flew a lot of those across the Pacific...
I love the USA; from New Zealand.... we have purchased some of these great aircraft to patrol our massive Ocean and Airspace! They have already caught a number of foreign ships fishing in our waters and that will be the tip of the Iceberg. The P-3 Orions were a fantastic aircraft, just like the C-130's.
B737; L188, perfect base platforms. Imagine 55 years service of type!
Canada, just bought 14 of these, with option for 2 more.
The P8 is a work in progress, when it was contracted by the USN for manufacture, a lot of cost/time savings compromises was made. I t is intended to be to most advance aircraft of it's type in the world. The operational P8 is currently using current proven systems until the more advanced systems is properly developed, which makes sense. The usual route to integrate the latest and greatest usually means cost and time overruns. The USN decided to build it in such a way that it is easy to upgrade as new systems become available. Yes the P8 can fly at very low altitudes as the wings and fuselage has been strengthened. But it cannot do so for long since like all jets flying 50-200 feet will burn through it's fuel extremely quickly. The aircraft has extra power and space to add new/enhanced capabilities. There was talk of adding JSOWs to it, which would turn in into a medium bomber. The NIMROD which was a good platform for it's time is based on the comet which is far older than the 737 on which the P8 is based. How many comets are currently flying around. it must have been a nightmare finding spares for the Nimrods. Also consider that it is safer than the Nimrod design, ie the last Nimrod crash was due to an engine fire which burned through the wings.
P8❤❤❤❤❤
Does it have air to air missiles?
It would be an intereasting platform to be adapted for an inland theatre of war. And at a relatively small cost.
No MAD boom makes sense, but still a shame. Nothing got the heart racing like hearing the S3 yelling MAD! MAD! MAD! Usually didn’t even need to key their mic. 😀
My boy Rambo flys these. True American hero.
Man, this is a sweet bird! I was an in-flight tech on P-3B's and C's back in the 80's, but they didn't have shit on this platform! O.O

What kind of a plane is being refuleled at the end!!
Sure, the P-8 doesn't have a MAD stinger, but, you can be damn certain it's been replaced by something much more effective.
MAD is good for "low and slow", but P-8 is not low and slow. MAD would be a useless mass of deadweight.
The video literally covered how the plane can perform at low speeds and at low altitudes, dummy.
How cool that a former passenger plane became a deadly warplane.

She's a beaut
I had an old guy as a neighbor that was a P-3 Orion crewman in the 1970s. He told me the US Navy knew where every single Soviet ballistic missile submarine was located at all times. Each sub had a P-3 assigned to it to blast it out of the water the second hostilities were declared.
Nice nice , you should ask him I'll bet he's got some great stories
@@londonengland3774 Lol that was the story he told me. That old guy is probably long gone now that was years ago.
Supposedly some Russian admiral said if he wanted to know where his submarines were he would just look for the P3s as he was sure they knew.
My dad used to fly the P3s . They would regularly track Russian subs I wouldn't be surprised if he was right.
I think what he meant was the Soviet ballistic missile submarines each had a P-3 on station all the time , not every sub like the attack subs. The Soviets had an enormous number of those at sea at a time. They would have had Hotel class, Delta Class, and Yankee class ballistic missile subs at the time. They all required getting somewhat close to the US to fire their weapons. Nowadays , there are enough Russian mobile ICBM's on land that can hit the US to make this possibility of "winning" a nuclear conflict pretty much not possible.
4:39 What is that floating behind the tail of the plane? Is that attached, or is it just a piece of trash caught in its airstream?
Should we see very soon the EP-8 elint version of the poseidon now that the EP-3E Aries be retired soon as well.
I imagine sub hulls are using more and more composite materials, magnetometers might not be as effective
Is it because this is a naval aircraft that the term "hull" is used instead of fuselage or airframe?
I've seen that term used in airliner crashes. Hull loss is when the entire airframe is lost in an incident.
You forgot Indian Navy!!they been using these longer than most other countries after USN!!
He also shown wrong map of india and intensionally didn't talk about Indian navy so I think he is totally baised.

Canada is soon to replace its venerable Lockheed CP-140 fleet with these outstanding aircraft. Many thanks to the USAF and our American Cousins for the opportunity.
Bombardier had a model of aircraft that Booing did not manufacture, the C-15. C-15 was a better aircraft than the 737, so, it was almost cancelled by Booing. C-15 would of been a much better option than the 737, but, Canada always has the inferiority complex.

Imagine some Chinese Navy Captain trying to flex nuts, only to be sunk by a damn 737 😂
"And their wholes are growing fatigue" arnt`t we all...
The question is can it run on one engine like the p3 Orion?
The 737 could do that years ago.
FYI it's REQUIRED BY LAW in the United States. All planes are REQUIRED to be able to fly from point A to point b, over water with a single engine.
The Royal Australian Airforce, the Royal Airforce and the Royal New Zealand Airforce, along with the Indian Navy have now upgraded to this platform. The Aussies are going to use this aircraft in tandem with UAVs.
There's also a plan by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) to buy the P-8A Poseidon and working in conjunction with the German Navy(Deutsche Marine).
India is the first customer of Poseidon outside United States and has the largest number after United States
Yes you are right.
Australia was the first to take delivery wasn't it? Not to mention that India's aircraft have very different mission systems to the rest of the world wide fleet.
@@nzgunnie India took delivery of their first plain in 2013, you can see the info Boeing website, Australia took their 1 delivery in 2016. The Indian varient is different, as it has to be interoperable with different platforms of Indian Navy made out of different tech from Russia, French, Israel along with the indigenous platforms.
@@DerivativesDocumentation So it was, that will teach me to refer to wikipedia. It looks likethe latest purchased aircraft are through FMS, so does this mean they will be configured the same as the P-8A variant? I found a list of the state department approved equipment, and it looks the same as that of other operators. Does this mean the Indian fleet will have two different configurations, P-8I and P-8A?
@@nzgunnie Wikipedia is ok to get a overall understanding at one place, but is reliability always secondary, as anyone can edit and update info in it. India doesn't have two varients. It is only Poseidon 8i. As far as Poseidon 8A is concerned it's primary user is US Navy, Poseidon 8AGS is US airforce version, Poseidon 8 MRA1 is UK version. An export varient will have customisation and relatively a downgrade version than what US uses, however that doesn't make it significantly inferior. For example, the Initial Indian version didn't have certain weapon packages, and it's more for a surveillance role, however recently US has agreed to sell advanced torpedoes to India. However, it seems that the feedback received from this plain is excellent for Indian Navy as it has 12 aircraft in inventory with 8 additional in order. For a common people, we will never know how close these export varients are to US version. It's classified info.
Let it be known that Poseidon served as an eye today “publicly” on Philippines vs China row over the Philippine sea. Watching and keeping the Chinese aggressors at bay while Philippines resupply its ship BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal. Unlike last month, China ships did not fire its water canon (they did activate it per news reports) to Philippine’s small ships because US poseidon is on patrol with PH allies.

Can a P-8 carry air to air missles to protect itself?
Yes
Seems like an ideal platform for the new QuickSink, small diameter guided bomb that enters the water beside a ship to detonate just beneath the keel.
Some corrections... Hydrocarbon detectors have been around since the 1950s (P-2V, early P-3A and I believe S-2s as well). Nobody calls any part of an aircraft a "hull", they are airframes or fuselages. The Electra is a L-188.
Insurance companies call the structure of aircraft, "hulls". Flying boats, like the PBYs, have always had a hull, whereas seaplanes, (planes with floats) have fuselages.
We called it "sniffer" goes back to P2's...not a great system when I was an AW....(P3A/B/C)
