My biggest hair mistake was flat ironing my hair everyday. And i mean every single day in high school. I would touch up my ends every morning cause the straight look was definitely in. My mom warned me but of course i didn’t listen cause i didnt want puffy hair. My hair went from the middle of my back to my shoulders to my chin in months. Then i decided to go natural cause i was bald headed😂😩😩😩

My first year natural was trial and error with so many errors - following someone else’s hair routine and expecting the same results, not moisturizing my hair when needed, following type 3 gurus when I’m type 4 and couldn’t understand why my hair looked different when I did the same thing. CRAZY stuff but thankfully I figured it out. Education and learning what your hair needs is the key to happy natural hair.

@@Xanthe79 It will take time for your hair to adjust. After 6 months to a year you will notice a change in moisture and curl pattern texture etc. 😊 Product use is trial and error. Products that worked when I first went natural don't work for me now. Don't turn into a product junkie like I did. One really bomb affordable product you can try is ORS Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion with Castor Oil. It's affordable but works really well. My hair is all mixed up but mostly type 4. Goodluck.

1: Retwisting my hair every night. Not only was that setting me up for product build-up(esp since these products were hella thick), but I was also manipulating it too much.
2: Using thick products. Even though my hair is coily, I found that light creams and gels work wonders for my hair. Took me so long to realize since I assumed that having type 4 hair meant that I NEEDED thick products. It forced me to see that what works for someone else may not work for me and I needed to take into account how thick my own hair was.

    • @rachelm.3173

I feel you with this comment 🙌 I'm type 4 and I had to learn most products that work for a ton of kinky coily's on UA-cam like the eco styler and wetline extreme gels are a hell no for me. Natural custards and jelly's are the only way I can get a successful wash and go.

I wash my hair every two weeks i would not oil my hair or my scalp. I didn't trim my ends, condition or deep condition. I've been natural for 10 years, my hair should be longer. Now I've been taking care of my hair in the last 2 years. I wash every week I don't condition but I deep condition with hot oil treatment weekly. I oil my ends daily and scalp daily. I'm high porosity with medium density and I think I'm about 4a/4b.

When I first went natural a mistake I made was pulling my hair and BRAIN back with tight headbands. I wanted a puff so bad loll!! Hair started to thin around the edges smh.. Another major mistake I make is dying my hair. I would promise myself that I wouldn't do it anymore but I'm hardheaded loll! Using box dyes eats my hair up, no matter how well I take care of it. 1. At night, I didn’t protect my hair at all in high school. Just slept on it every. single. night.
    2. Every morning it would be matted of course, so I would just re-do my entire styling process (wet my hair, put in hair cream and gel, and LEAVE the house with WET hair). I’m pretty sure I ended up having moisture overload for a while. But that was years ago and my hair is flourishing now. 💪🏾

I had a similar straightening schedule too in my past every wash day lol 😂 gosh I didn't do a big chop but I had to cut my hair. I learned alot from those past five years. This video was very helpful knowing my hair is finally at a good state an that my curls are popping now! 😁 This was an inspiring video. Thanks for letting us know what we should avoid doing to our hair.

Im a dye-head. I used to dye my hair and then be lazy in my early 20’s.Now that I’m older I’m not so lazy and I don’t experiment with other people’s routines outside of techniques. It’s hard to keep up with washing and deep conditioning/protein treatments each week but my hair is flourishing now. Another mistake I did was not know my porosity I assumed I was low and would deep condition for hours and then wonder why it was breaking. I typically stick to the directions now and at best I may add a additional 10 mins but if I do more my hair is very mushy.

Finding a moisturizing routine!!!!!! It’s so hard to genuinely moisturize my (naturally) dry hair. Like some products I have been trying make it more “sticky” than moisturized if that makes sense!
Being with stylists (including my mom) who doesn’t know my type of hair and just does the routines they do on everybody.
Wearing too much wigs and doing nothing to my hair underneath (very cringy right?)

I got a trim my second year of being natural that was so bad that I literally damn near start it over somebody else did it for me. And I lied to lady who trim my hair this time around and she said I had done a really good job and I honestly in about 7 months but I told her having three. That showed me after her doing a thorough cut that I don't have to trim my hair as much.

One mistake that I still do is touching my hair a LOT. Specially the ends. I used to do it when I had it relaxed and now I do it to my transitioning hair because I had my hair relaxed when I was very little and didn’t know what my texture was like so this is new to me and I just keep touching it because it’s different... i think it’s one of the reasons I have so many split ends and fairy knots. idk how to stop I think it has a lot to do with anxiety but I’m trying to stop 😭

Whew I made so many mistakes in the beginning because I didn’t know what to do. I stayed away from silicones and sulfates. I tried to make my own products. Tried to keep up with bloggers buying all these products they got for free...spent wayy too much. I used to style my hair too much. I used to wash my hair too much. Tried too many DIY hair masks 😖. Followed too many type 2 -3 youtubers wondering why my hair “didn’t do what theirs did” .Rough combing and brushing. Over picking with the hair pick. Caring too much what people thought of my TWA. Accepting that my hair is what it is whether it’s too kinky...unmanageable....too short...annoying to detangle at times, I’ve just learned to accept it cause it’s mine.
I’ve been natural for years now. And I’m sure I’ll continue to make more mistakes but meh....just hair. And there’s always a scarf or hat to wear on those weeks of neglect lol.

I made just about every mistake there is (except for bleaching) especially when my hair was relaxed. I’ve been natural for 2 years now, and I’m still figuring some things out. At least I know not to trim too often, and to only do micro trims when I do. I’ve cut off too much hair before. One of the huge mistakes I made was pulling my hair back too tightly, especially when I was relaxed. I wore low buns and ponytails all the time back then. My back edges never recovered, they’re destroyed. My front edges are still thin from that. I also didn’t moisturize like I should have. When I was relaxed I was afraid of getting my hair damp or wet unless I was washing it. I wouldn’t have EVER spritzed it with water! Ever. I used products with bad ingredients, too, because I didn’t know they were bad. And waaaaay too much heat styling.

My mistakes: 1. I used rubber bands when doing protective styles. Those rubber bands tear my hair out so any growth is cancelled out. And when I was going through my crochet hair phase I would rush and literally cut my own hair while trying to take them out. 2. Not finding the right products to detangle/nor taking enough time detangle. I finally started using aussie moist and finger detangling-immediately I stopped losing hair. 3. I got lazy and stopped deep conditioning and then recently I stopped paying attention to my ends and making sure they were truly sealed. So of course, my ends got really frizzy and I just had to give myself a trim.

In the beginning my hair mistake was i would over oil my hair and then flat iron it 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️I didn't know any better. I didn't have any knowledge about hair maintenance but I learned. I use minimal heat in my hair now. I get it pressed every 2-3 months by my stylist because I can't cut my own ends. But I have high porosity, oily hair that I wash every 2-3 weeks with a steamed protein deep conditioner and sometimes hot oil. It works for me. Now my only problem is I dont know how to style my natural hair 😩
