    Nice succinct review. Just finished Holland ‘44 as the Allies. We played the long game. Many similarities in this system, but each game in the series has had its own uniqueness and playability. Noting specifically the lead formation rule when it comes to combat. That made things interesting! As the Allied player I didn’t like how the Germans could so easily exit off the map and no Allied ZOCs were recognized, but that’s really my only knock on the game. What was interesting was utilizing an effective strategy for each of the paratroop divisions to accomplish its necessary objectives. In a twist, the 1st Airborne along with the Polish 6th were able to capture Arnhem! The 101st took Eindhoven with limited resistance, but Nijmegen turned out to be impossible to take with the 82nd and with 30th Corps et al. What a fun game it was. I’ve heard it tilts to the Allies and I’d almost have to agree with that, but it still was a struggle! Great game and probably very good for solitaire too!

    I have the game and played it last fall, I really enjoyed it. I found this video made me want to go break it out again and set it up and play it again, thanks for the review guys.

    Thanks for the great review! I've been into board games now for about 4 years, and I feel like I'm missing something. I've amassed quite the collection, but have never tried a "war game". I've been debating about getting one for a while, and although I might regret getting something this heavy for my first try, I just recently pulled the trigger and ordered it, thanks to your great review!! Looking forward to studying the rule book....

    Great review and AAR (thank you). Those traffic markers can be brutal! Just wrapping up a full campaign game with a friend who reintroduced me to war gaming. We tried Normandy'44 as well but I much prefer Holland. Simonitch is a great designer. Definitely Top 10 material.

    Majestic game, beautiful stretched map. So almost topping my hex-and-counter games, just behind D-Day at Omaha Beach.

    At the 13"00 point of the video, isn't that a 13:4 attack (3:1) rather than a 13:7 (1:1)? Given that the German unit is 7 on attack, 4 on defense?

    What is a good wargame for me to start with? I really want to work my way up to Kriegsspiel but any recommendations would be nice. I like bigger maps but I'll trust your recommendations if you recommend a small version like this.

      In modern wargaming bigger is rarely better, at least for your average person. Is there a topic you're interested in?

      @@ThePlayersAid Thanks for responding so quickly. Ideally, I would love to find a war game as close to a real-life wargaming simulation something like a Free Rules Kriegsspiel or the Sandhurst Kriegsspeil which I'll link to the bottom because I have the files for it, but I know that's really rare. I like the blocks but I have no preference in terms of pieces, any tabs with infantry marked on them is fine. I looked up a list from a Colonel who recommended some war games that were as close as civilians are going to get to getting their hands on a real military simulation, these were his recommendations -- " A Victory Lost
      Combat Mission (on the computer)
      Ardennes '44
      Ukraine '43
      Conflict of Heroes 2nd Edition
      To the Green Fields Beyond" --- So in terms of what I'm looking for I would ideally like it to simulation as in "unpredictable and you make up your own battles" but I also like the games you've featured on your channels that stick to particular battles as I am a WW2 enthusiast. So with that in mind, I'm looking for what is a few good starter games so I don't jump into anything too complex too quickly (preferably 2-3 players.) Thank you very much and I hope O didn't confuse you with my answer. I also like Alexander the Great style games. Here's a link to examples of what I was talking about onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AJ49n9igxpvPnuQ&id=F9E2C53157B5CB7%2122761&cid=0F9E2C53157B5CB7 This is from the UK military wargame and you might be interested in it because it's awesome and you supposedly can put it together yourself as the directions are in the manual.

      @@ThePlayersAid Continued... What I'm really looking for is to be the General rather than the leader of the country, I want a war game that is more about the actual war (unscripted highly preferable) but still with a general objective and rules. The best thing I could find is a map or sandbox size board that didn't really rely on cards or any other type of script, that had a ref or something to time us and just have two sides plan their attacks and get it done. That's why I keep referring to the original Kriegsspiel and real military simulations where they're standing over a huge map group thinking on how to get over this mountain, or push the enemy into the town, etc. I know that's asking a lot but the simpler the better. Rules aren't a problem and either is a restriction on travel because of that's realistic.

      We are taking it slow with the merch at this point. We do have buttons for sale but shirts are a bit more pricey. Maybe in the future.

    Im intresting in this kibd of wargame, where do I begin?

    • @ThePlayersAid
      @ThePlayersAid  6 років тому +2

      The No Retreat Series are great games to start at this level. Much larger scale but not an overwhelming number of counters etc. Rules are not overly complex.

    I still haven't cracked this open, would be good to recreate movie a bridge too far, wasn't that Pegasus Bridge???

    • @ThePlayersAid
      @ThePlayersAid  6 років тому +1

      Pegasus Bridge was the first action of D-Day. British Gliders landed and captured the bridge with little resistance. This is three months later in The Netherlands. Still paras capturing bridges, though. And yes this is Operation Market Garden, like the film A Bridge Too Far.

    You said "don't make this your first wargame"
    well, what do you recommend for my first wargame? :D
    if I can play COIN games no problem, I can handle wargames yeah?

    • @ThePlayersAid
      @ThePlayersAid  5 років тому +1

      I would consider COIN games wargames in a broad sense. So if you're comfortable playing something like Pendragon or Fire in the Lake, then really you shouldn't have trouble with this, at least from a complexity standpoint.

      Gamer Hudson absolutely. The only hidden information are some garrison German counters that are hidden to both sides.

      Most of this series is solo friendly. I also have France 40, two games in a box, both really good solo plays

    • @jrd33
      @jrd33 Рік тому

      It works pretty well solo because each side has clear objectives in each part of the map, so you don't need to worry too much about strategy or trying to hide your intentions from the "other player".
