Cape Coral Canal Tour - after Hurricane Ian

- It’s our first real tour with the boat after Hurricane Ian. We check out some of the repair progress from Hurricane Ian and attempt to navigate through Chiquita lock near Rumrunners restaurant. The waters are rough and rolling through the broken lock, so we watch a small boat get tossed about instead of damaging our boat. After that fiasco, we tour SW Cape Coral’s Rim Canal and see more destruction, derelict boats and destroyed houses.
Amazing Devastation in "Boaters Heaven on Earth". Cape Coral Canal system is the most unique canal system on Earth.... Hurricane Ian really did a job on this beautiful part of Florida....
Nice job Captain!
We were just talking about you two as were walking down Duval St in Key West. Reminiscing your body paint episode. Lol
@Adventures of Happy Ours 😆👍👍 have fun down there you two!!
Fun town. Already hurting and didn’t see sunset yet. Lol
Great to see your videos neighbor 😊
Treacherous shallow water all through those areas. You were VERY CAREFUL.. Smart! Fun trip is up the Caloosahatchee River.. under the Bridges to Fort Myers. Love that area... but gotta know the water.
Ian + 3 months, Must be around Christmas. I knew they wanted to get rid of the Chiquita locks, sounds like the state Dept of Env Prot is finally on board. It's not the current, its the eddies which are formed due to the approach geometry of the locks. The smart people will take it at high tide. Thanks for the memories, we'll hopefully be back there soon.
I’ve heard the same rumor. I guess they figure it’s cheaper to remove than rebuild it and making a larger path for water flow will reduce current speed and eddys
If I was having second thoughts on whether I should try to take a big boat throughs that lock, watching that center console struggle and then at the end, when he actually climbed a foot to the water level on the other side, would have made me be feeling pretty sure I made the right decision to not try to go through that! Enjoyed your video!
What’s up Cap ? You look pretty sunburned?? Great to see Mrs Captain lol. I think Fla is slowly getting back and considering what everyone went threw ! I was in Jax where there was nothing but still feel bad for my neighbors to the south !!! Thanks for the vid. Interesting and cool as usual !!!
Thanks for the update.
Thanks for the video. Made me nervous just watching that boat go thru the lock. Keep up the good work, really enjoy it!
A nice relaxing trip thanks for sharing captain
Love your videos, thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
Where was Matey? The more I see your videos the more I like the boat. It’s a sharp looking craft.
Thank you. I think we left Matey home on this trip as we were hoping to pull up somewhere for lunch. Lol
Nice video. Good capture of the damage in that area and the suspect channel markers
When you took the pontoon to Pine Island, did you see similar issues with missing channel markers?
Markers are missing everywhere. But enough remain to navigate safely.
Since you filmed this, there have been extra 4" wood bumpers installed either end of the lock. I went through a week ago and it was fine, but I had been keeping an eye on the tide. Guys around there told me the big boats have been bumping through on occasion. Hopefully this gets removed soon.
You also didn't show the big brown yacht that's in the backyard of one of the houses at the entrance to the canals. I'm sure that used to be at Tarpon Point. I heard the owner doesn't have insurance on that boat !
I noticed the new wood board the other day too. The brown boat was in other vids. It was actually docked at the owners dock behind the house 2 doors down. I think it’s the first dock as you enter the canals. You can see the pilings all pushed over from the boat leaning against them before it went aground.
I was in beautiful Cape Coral in February scary what you’ve been through, great cleanup
Any info on the yacht club and beach
The yacht club and beach are still closed. Boathouse should be opening soon through.
0:14 When boats are lifted out of the water like that, are they considered totaled? Or will it still run? Good luck to those of you in sw Florida.
Every case is different. Some are totaled depending on the extent of damage but many like mine are repairable.
Sad for the erea after ian
Tom did you get any video of your home when we were getting hlt by the hurricane
I left the house before the floods rolled in but I have several videos leading up to it and heading home. Matey and I rode it out in the car out of the flood zone. Check out the Ian playlist on my channel. ua-cam.com/play/PLuI_46PEIPiXhdbcyeXC_GainzDgN7k58.html
@@AdventuresofHappyOurs will do thanks
What kind of damage did you have on your boat and house?
House flooded south 6inches of water. Boat ended up in yard. Check out the hurricane Ian playlist on my channel. ua-cam.com/play/PLuI_46PEIPiXhdbcyeXC_GainzDgN7k58.html
Depending on how things go there may not be a Chiquita lock to worry about. I'm not sure what my opinion is on it.
I think it will work out if they remove it’s entirety and make the opening wider. As long as people don’t lose too much depth it should be fine.
I heard that there was some sort of petition against the removal. This was long before the hurricane. It may have stalled removal.
They’ll always be someone against it, but I think this time it will go through. The lock didn’t save anyone damage with the storm, it reduces home values behind the lock, creates boat traffic and congestion, wasting fuel, creating safety issues and pollution in the area.
You ever let Bridget drive ?
She has no interest. Lol
My wife loves to drive our boat. I actually feel quite safe when she does. I have had a lot of boats and always feel comfortable driving but are present cruiser was new to her so she took a Coast Guard course. When we’re on a boat trip I always feel comfortable going below to take a shower or make some food while she takes over the helm. Only thing she won’t do is pull into a slip on her own. She’s afraid she’ll bang up the boat. She doesn’t like driving through locks either for the same reason.
Nice! Enjoy the break. Lol
So now Bridgett is a 1st mate and Matey is 2nd mate
Don’t tell Brigitt! Lol
Where is your new Captain's uniform and hat wtf
When I’m piloting a big ship I’ll worry about uniforms! Lol
