Stallone originally wrote Rocky to die in this film while fighting Tommy. He realized this character is about hope not tragedy. And hence he wins. Rocky is there to inspire us all to be our best!!!
Anyone who is invested in the character of Rocky will love all of the movies. It's so fascinating to see Rocky grow and develop as a person from a young man to an older man and to see the way he handles the challenges of life. His philosophy of how to respond to life and it's hard knocks is so inspirational. I think that you will like the next Rocky as well because you have also become invested in the character. A word of advice about the last Rocky movie: have some tissue at hand because it will make you cry.

This one is one of my favorites. Rocky suffering from brain damage loses everything he worked hard for. A young fighter comes forward and he betrays Rocky. This is not a boxing match. It is in the streets!
I hate the Creed character. He wasn’t living in his dads shadow and he felt like he was a mistake. Apollo didn’t even know you existed. He’s rich but he gives it up to fight lol. He’s not an underdog like Rocky and he isn’t charismatic like Apollo. He’s a terrible character.
It’s funny how many of the original fans that grew up watching the Rocky movies didn’t care much for the 5th one, but now as decades have passed, there’s a new generation of fans that feel different about this one and gained some popularity. I’ve noticed that with other movie series as well.
I think a large part of it is we saw them as they came out. Rocky 5 came out and it was just another sequel at that point. It didn’t live up to our expectations. That said, I’ve always said it’s the worst Rocky movie but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. It’s still good. Just not as good
Sylvester Stallone actually said that the Rocky movies are a love story with boxing sprinkled in. And it truly holds true. Even hardcore action enthusiasts deep down wish they had a relationship like Rocky and Adrian. Then the boxing just completes the movies. I believe that's why they made the love interest in the Creed movies so dynamic as well. The recipe works and the rest of the stories just wrap around it.
I'm with you, Coby. This wasn't the best of the franchise, but I maintain that there's no such thing as a *bad* Rocky movie. You still have the same lessons on the strength of family, perseverance, and getting up after you take that last hit.

I remember first time i watched, I jumped up for the last fight cheering for rocky but forgot i had a glass of cola on my lap. Mom made me clean it up, but worth it. hehe. This is my favorite Rocky movie. Even more unpopular opinion, hehe. It was so unique. No ring, no fighting an unknown enemy, no training montage. Just a great unique storyline. Stupid critics. 😄😍
It's not a bad movie, fans just didn't like how depressing it was. At least he ended it on a high note with his final movie. You'll have to watch that one next. In many ways this movie makes more sense after his final movie came out.
Remember what he said in Rocky IV, once he gets hit on the chin he doesn't feel anything anymore. I think that's what helped him get through this fight with Tommy.

As I’ve grown I realize we said this movie sucks cause this guy we came to love and identify with made it to the top of the mountain and lost it all and I think we just hated that. But now that I’m really looking at it, it’s a great movie in its own right.

Finally, a reactor who catches on that Duke manipulated Tommy and the media to get Rocky in the ring for the big $ fight. It was diabolical really the way he low key admitted Kane might not have been 100% and praised Rocky in front of Tommy to rile him up. Good to see your not just a pretty face. 😎👍
Stallone wanted his own son Sage to play Rocky Jr. despite the age difference (Rocky Jr. seems considerably older than he was in the previous movie) for sentimental reasons. This was supposed to be the final movie in the series, though there would eventually be one more Rocky movie because Stallone was ultimately unhappy with Rocky V, as well as a series of Creed spinoff movies.
Rocky 5 may not be the best, just like Star Trek 5, but there are some great character moments in both films that have become more appreciated over time. Plus, the story change of direction in Rocky 5 really sets up Rocky 6 and the Creed films. And yes, after Rocky 6, the three Creed films are direct sequels to the Rocky movies and are fantastic. I love the newer Creed movies as much as the Rocky movies that I grew up on.
Wow! As a Trekkie & a Rocky fan, I've never made the "ST 5 & Rocky 5" comparison, but, it makes sense. Especially how the 6th movies of both franchises took it up a notch & ended things.
I think the hate really comes from the fact that, for a long time, this was the last Rocky movie. As a finale to the Rocky series it’s VERY disappointing, but now we have Rocky 6, which is a great finale, so I think people are much more accepting of Rocky V

When you have the opportunity, you should watch "Rocky vs Drago" which is Stallone's director's cut. An alternate cut of V does exist, I've seen it, but I really can't remember the differences. I've only seen it once.

Also, I just have to add, do you know how LITTLE 20 thousand dollars is for a heavyweight world champion contender, even in 1990? Buster Douglas, a 50-1 longshot who took on Tyson made 1.3 million while Tyson made 6 million. You have to understand that in 1990, you could buy a Brand new fully loaded mustang GT convertible for under 20k. So it seemed like a lot of money to people who weren't educated. But it was not a lot of money.
Always felt this film was overly-hated. Yes it breaks format but it has many great elements. How many “He can’t win, oh wait he does” movies could they make?
The director released an unauthorized Director's Cut of Rocky 5 which has better music, extended scenes and better pacing which really impoves the film.

The original script ended the movie with Adrian holding a press conference announcing Rocky had died as a result of injuries from the fight with Tommy. Stories differ, but it was either Stallone or the studio that refused to kill Rocky off. Definitely watch Rocky Balboa (6) and the first two Creed movies. Third Creed movie was really bad though.

Personally I don't think most people hate this movie because it's bad, on it's own it's a good movie, the problem is that at the time this was the last Rocky, end of the story and looking back on how it started it just felt like a weak finish.

Tommy Morrison (Tommy Gunn) was a real HW boxer at this time and had arguably the best left hook of all time with only Tyson to really rival it.

Tommy Morrison is the great nephew of John Wayne who's real name was Marion Morrison.
Unfortunately Sage Moonblood Stallone passed away in 2012, age 36, from Coronary Artery Disease. RIP
I think Rocky III is the best one, but Rocky V is my personal favorite.
This movie is my second favorite Rocky movie after 4, never really cared for 1-3
The original script ended the movie with Adrian holding a press conference announcing Rocky had died as a result of injuries from the fight with Tommy. Stories differ, but it was either Stallone or the studio that refused to kill Rocky off. Definitely watch Rocky Balboa (6) and the first two Creed movies. Third Creed movie was really bad though.
3rd Creed isn’t bad. It just goes in a different direction.
Whoever made that decision was right.

They should have decided not to make any scenes in this film 😂😂😂 What a disaster of a film from the brilliant quality of the first two films! Should have closed the book then.
Personally I don't think most people hate this movie because it's bad, on it's own it's a good movie, the problem is that at the time this was the last Rocky, end of the story and looking back on how it started it just felt like a weak finish.

Not the best ROCKY, but it keeps the stories going. BALBOA is great. CREED and CREED2 is a must, for canon continuation.
