Another amazing conversation, Z! I was laughing and yes, crying throughout this! I felt something in this that I really cannot explain too! It’s like you were using words but the communication was on a deeper level than just the words you both were using. Then again, maybe I’m just tripping out during another travel day. 😂
Great conversation. The laughter too, was infectious. Little Story - I picked up a piece of bone off the OR floor the other day and looked at it in amusement. The Surgeon said, "Is this your first time circulating an orthopedic case?" Me- "I've circulated a thousand times and I refuse to decenter my awe of the human body and what lives/pulses inside us or why we're here." Most people in healthcare look at me like I have three heads these days. Being with and for the patient- even introducing the patient to the OR team when I arrive with the patient to the room, is becoming very foreign. I turned the Surgeon's music off the other day as well when I arrived to the theatre and he gave me the look of WTF?? The patients no matter what age, race, healthcare "problem", income status, gender, deserve our focus. And I'm afraid we've lost it to "please don't stop the music..." :)
Those people thinking it's weird to not introduce them to patients are kunts. I said hi to this guy: I was at a park in a college town and this upper middle class flannel bribery paycheck corrupt company (probably) employee. This high school mentality insecure, ear buds, tiny dog walking townee' I said hi, how's if going? (With a pleasant and open face) and he just makes eye contact and 😡 Like bro. 🤦♂️ you have it all. Context. I was huddled under a tree on the walking trails during a rain. And it was coming down. It was supposed to connect us to reality. Meanwhile mister upper middle class probably looks down on people with his 47 year old teenage capacity mind. :| Yes this rant is a little unhinged, and no I can't read this guy's mind. :| but sometimes you hit a home run If I say hi to 100 guys in that town, and they don't say hi. At least 5 of them would be like that. Let's say like doctors or engineers. Not the good ones like the egg heads in the video above. 🥚 🥸
I started on this journey by going to a meditation retreat that had the “spa” quality about it. It threw in phrases like “sat, chit, ananda” without explaining the meaning. They taught us a rote meditation “routine”. I gave that up because it had no teeth. I was looking for something of substance to help me with the suffering I’d experienced. That was NOT it. Then I found this and although I was reluctant at first, I began looking at Buddhism and Christian mysticism. I don’t think I’d want to go through awakening without these influences. Finding this after my disappointing foray into meditation was just what I needed. This was a very good interview. Enjoyed all 100 minutes of it!
Another great interview. I really liked when Ron said that appearance IS space ,time, and knowledge - it's not something behind those. Yes! Everything is just what it is as it is. The explanations are just part of a complex story that keeps us hooked in. They are useful within their context but have no substance, value, or reality beyond beyond that.
This is so good. I retired from a 40 year nursing career while maintaining an entirely separate personal quest. Somehow I managed to land in the right spot, repeatedly. Many years as the worst student of a real Dzong Chen master. He always gave me the advice to stay connected to general society. I longed for retreat and isolation, but he encouraged me to do my best in my career. A 30 day retreat was the longest I could get away, but a general lifestyle of daily meditation practice. I see it as a very tricky path to walk, but no doubt, a good one. Thank gawd for the Angelo and ZDogg comedy show. Being part of the Asilomar Posse and drinking the taint juice offered by Violet, well, I drank the KoolAid for sure. Love you Z. Thanks .
@@maryannscanlon8655 not sure of the benefits of one over the other. I’ve had to peel away the dogma of DzogChen, but yes, the personal connection to a properly trained teacher gave me much. Seeing the mundane as magic is wonderful. Being present in someone else’s struggle is nitro fuel. Nursing is good that way.
Thanks so much for this. I've been on a journey for many years now, and have hit the exact ideas y'all were talking about today. As a Westerner who turned to Buddhism (which saved my life), I'm grateful to see these ideas becoming so freely disseminated. I've always considered myself more of an Existential Masochist, so leaning into discomfort has actually been fun for me, and has led to so many new ways of thinking and seeing the world. I LOVE these discussions!! Keep it coming, Doc!
Also really loved your exploration of meaning/meaningness. Emptiness of inherent meaning means, if you hold this next phase lightly, you get to decide, or explore, what it means. You get to explore spontaneous arising of meaning with whatever arises.
It’s tough to assimilate all the mass info, with the time(limited “ego mind”) feels as though you need to pay attention to the impulses of what to learn or just plainly see.
1:24:38 Language is powerful, and the way its been portrayed in western culture pulls us away from reality. One part of the reality Ive come to see is that, mind is not just the brain, but it is the entire body including the brain. Body awareness, and mindfulness are the exact same practice. Memories are a good example , theres reflexive and instinct memory like fight, flight and freeze responses that exist in the body. And theres memories that exist in the brain (which is a body part) that may show us visuals of our past. So brain and body are not separate. Mindfulness is a practice of body awareness and vice versa. Redefining mindfulness with detailed language is so vital in being able to evolve. Thank you for posting such a deep discussion!
I really appreciated the deep dive into the contextual underpinning of "what meditation is for". Very important that you invoked Dr Britton's work, because many people are using these techniques without a context for what could happen with their everyday experiences. In that sense there's a fundamental lack of informed consent when McMindfulness is at play. On the other hand Zubin, I'm glad you pushed back about the availability of some notion of Awakening, even within our world, for which we are radically removed from the context of many of these traditions. The Suttas themselves describe Buddha teaching thousands of lay people, farmers etc who did not have a lifetime to cloister away and meditate. Later Buddhism also contains the 84 Mahasiddhas, archetypes of ordinary people enlightened within a human lifetime.
To me, mindfulness is a gateway for new people exploring the space, to then later expand their personal journey into the self. Just one step forward to a greater experiential goal….

Mc Mindfulness sounds like colonization of ancient traditions, in a way.
I reject your premise that corporations aren't 'evil'.
😗
It's far too useful in clinical settings with ppl with serious psychopathology, and there isn't a place for the spiritual part of it.
Are ye ALL in front of WHO?
