As a member of the US Air Force it was a privilege to have worked in the bunker at Daws Hill. Thanks for the tour, funny it looks the same as it did during my time there, wet and cold!
I graduated from high school there on base in 91. Fun times. My old man told me about the bunker. My history class was in Ike's old office. His pic was on the wall there and a plaque with his name at his old desk.
I had the pleasure of getting a tour of an active Strategic Air Command base as a cadet in the early 80's. This reminds me of the cheerless, bland offices I saw there. Purely functional, and nothing more.
I found this video interesting as I visited a similar (smaller) one in Cheshire some years ago. My dad did electrical maintenance at Daws Hill in the ‘60s.
Omg this brought back memories. I used to explore this place in 97 and at the beginning of the video I remember throwing a butter knife from the cafeteria at the wood fence at the left (it was fully intact then) and it stuck in the wood. I was very impressed with myself as a 15yo
I was on this tour with Ian, Chris & Ben from IKS. Such nice blokes, very down to earth and we had a good chat before and after the tour. Just look out for the young lanky lad in jeans. I make quite a few appearances in this video actually.🤣 Its very strange watching back over this tour because less than 3 weeks later the country went into its first lockdown and I doubt anyone else has been able to visit this bunker since!!!
I'm so glad I found your channel. These videos of exploring the underground bunkers are like nothing else, and you seem to find a lot of them! Just subscribed and can't wait for the next video!
I had the pleasure of meeting Ian and Chris in the car park before the start of this tour of Daws Hill bunker. I had no idea they were going to there but what really nice guys. I've seen myself several times on this video even though I was trying to keep out of the way as I hate seeing myself on camera.
There also seems to be a mix of pre 1970's and post 80's equipment, wiring and controls. A bit of a Hodge podge in the piping where adapters have been placed to link old ducting/pipes to new filters, pumps and fans.
Really enjoyed the video, thanks for the opportunity to look around this fascinating place. I didn't even know it was there!. Got a little frustrated when I was half way through listening to the guide's interesting stories and you kept wandering off though! :D
In those big air filter boxes in the machinery spaces there will also be multiple spaced layers of fine copper mesh that also prevent EMP charge from travelling in free air through the filters and ducting. Each vent would also have the fine mesh as a final screen and there will be dielectric spacers/joiners on the metal air ducting and electrical ducting (Generally just at a cable passthrough that will have an EMP filter mounted to a copper or stainless steel plate. And yes I have setup and worked on such systems. I even have manuals on EMP Protection for bunkers and command shelters, mainly US in origin and dating from the cold war, but still current!
At 46:20 where Chris said "That looks like gas detection" looks more like a 7/16 RF connector on LDF 5-50 or 6-50 heliax RF cable, considering they used HF to communicate with SAC resources and other types.of high powered trancievers on that level of the bunker.
Lived here on base 1976 to 1977 wit my husband USAF Sgt Sam Lalich who was in the Security Police. I had NO IDEA at the time this place was such a big deal. A USAF High Wycombe posting was considered a peachy tour of duty because of its country club atmosphere!! It was such a great place to live.
Interesting views, brings back so many memories of being one of the project managers there. I started just after the explosion in the bottom floor after a power surge
Those panels at 34:00 date from the rebuild or work around the 1980's. I've worked on similar systems introduced at that time with those square meters instead of round or oval ones.
208volts is common in the usa in an industrial setting. its the phase to phase voltage on a 120/208 Y type transformer. we use it so we can use all 3 phases at 120v.
I worked at Daws Hill for a couple of years (support staff, not a squaddie). We all knew the bunker was there, but I never had reason to go down there. I'd actually be curious to have a look nowadays lol
Another great video Ian. Downloaded it as 4K version as my Chrome dongle can't handle the higher quality audio, along with many other tubers. Great effort as always.
Most TEMPEST safe monitor's have a shielded case and have a very fine copper mesh over the screen to prevent Rd signals from the video system escaping.
I used to live in the Warren Wood area which was also built on the Wycombe Abbey grounds. My back garden adjoined the woods which ran up the hill to the entrance of this bunker. I always used to wonder if any of this was under my house. Living in the area all my life there were also rumours that this was a connected to the RAF base in Naphill
Oh and "TEMPEST" covers other things, not Radio communications. It protects against LAN systems, monitors and keyboards from having their radiation detected and decoded. So that proves that room is one of the computer server stacks in the bunker. Most of the problem has been sorted out more recently, since the 80's, by using fibre optic fed LAN and WAN systems as the cable doesn't radiate any RF at all and is dielectric so won't conduct any power or signals.
@@benjamintaylor-grain9422 thanks for info ,id love to go once all this covid stuff is over.... havent i seen you in the videos a famous man :) .......the greenham videos among many...i was up there today try to find a shelter in the woods..

I think secret vault paid to do this tour quite some time back he used to have a thing about trying to get in this place but never could quite get in there on his own finally he just paid a price and just like you did and got to go on a tour
Cable looks like what's called 500 armored. Its 4/0 wire for mains. It is around 11Lbs. a foot. Its is what feeds or supplies the main and Transformers that you just passed.
As seen in Midsomer Murders on ITV, as RAF Cooper's Hill in an episode entitled " Incident at Cooper's Hill " . I'm full of useless information like this 😀
I am immediately surprised about the location and what is there. sometimes you pay for a visit, then you also get to see more of what is still intact. 11:03 that is to close the door to electromagnetic radiation. (you can also see it in hospitals)
Hi I worked on strike comand bunker being constructed near high wycombe about 1985 which was state of the art tech completely self contained and fully manned 24hr by armed military personel is this still in use?
Hi there IKS. We are hoping to shoot a short film set around a nuclear bunker. Would it possible to ask how you folks got permission to be there and who we'd need to contact. Many Thanks, Ian Killick, JetBlack Productions

Mellow yellow drink can has been there since 1990, was a promotion for "days of thunder" film with tom cruise.

Used to go to the bar at this base as a young man in the early 1980's
My ex wife's mother used to work there around that time....told me many a story 😅
It's good to see that the locals who have lived alongside this installation for all those decades are finally able to see what it was all about.

Love it. Well done lads.
I worked there around 1986 I believe for a company that did all the airconditioning.
The place with the water filled gauges appears to be cooling/heating radiators to set Ambient air temperature? Couldn't read the gauges.

Another great explore, paid for or not! Cheers!
Great video! Loved all the history and facts listed
nice to know we had this to look after us so so glad we never had to use it anger
Got in here quick lol looks like a good one!
11:10: These contacts on the door frame are for RF shielding. In that environment I guess is has something to do with EMP shielding.

The man hours and cost to install all the equipment and cabling in this bunker.....crazy.
