Run Soft Pop, open CX/Combo panel's Layer Mask Calculator, select the saved mask you want to add and then click the solid square icon at the top. Or if you want to paint it in then add black mask to Soft Pop and in Layer Mask Calculator click the dashed square to load mask as selection, then select white brush and paint on to the mask.

Hi Dave, I found a good way that worked for me where I have subject, background or foreground plus maybe a sky was to create one colour grading tool layer, select mids 3 and add layer mask. I then duplicate that layer once or twice depending on requirements. I can then work through the layers and intersect each layer as required from the new mask calculator having previously saved subject etc

Got TK9 2 days ago - what a GREAT update. Been anxiously waiting for your 1st TK(9) Friday & you didn't disappoint. Have been really experimenting with the Blend IF buttons to further fine tune almost any layer. Even tried a Curves Layer in LL mode (initially 15% Fill) and then modifying Blend/IF properties (with the button) - can also add a mask if needed - have gotten some interesting results. Can't imagine all the possibilites you will come with. Looking forward to next Wed!!! (& beyond). As usual, THANKS so much!!!

Without a doubt, including the mask calculator in the Combo panel is a huge advance. The latter method saves a lot of editing time, especially when you're editing a large number of images. There is still a lot to learn about the new panels, especially with the blend if buttons.

@@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly By the way, Dave, I discovered something interesting here. I decided to try the method you mentioned but didn't show on this video, and maybe you already know this, but here it goes. I used the blend-if button on the CX panel to do the color grading, and I noticed in the bottom left corner in Photoshop the little drop-down menu which shows the document sizes. I made a sky and foreground mask on one of my photos, then used the traditional method vs the blend-if method and I saw a drop in size in the document getting the same results when using the blend-if. This is something Blake Rudis mentions as an advantage of the blend-if method.

Wow, Dave, this blend if feature really saves a bunch of space on your files. I use the technique you taught us of using the multiply and screen blend modes, but instead of adding a mask, I press the newer blend-if second button and just select the range pre-sets and a way you go. I mean, its not huge amounts of space you save, but when as you add more layers things will start to add up.

Thanks Dave for introducing so many options for mask creation, not sure yet which I prefer but will try them out. I purchased Sean's button by button videos and working through them but very good. One tip I did like was that if you Command and double click on e.g. sky selection then you get the foreground selection automatically

I'm brand new to the TK panel. I got TK 9 this week using your promo code and have been reading the manual and familiarizing myself with the buttons. Your tutorial today was excellent for a beginner like me. I did have to stop a few times and apply the sequences, and it was all very manageable. I think the last approach you used is also my favorite. It takes advantage of what is already open and runs through the various channels and color grading options right at once. Coming up with the masks in the end was a snap, too. Thank you. I guess now all I have left is go through the other 100+ videos you have of the TK panel. :) Thank you for this tutorial. Dave, your tutorial is mind blowing as is TK9. There are so many components to this update the tire will take some time to learn. The selecting of sky and foreground is a real time saver and the calculator in the panel is brilliant. I know this will become second nature to us mere mortals after using it for a couple of weeks. And the addition of Blend IF adds such a new dimension to the nuances of editing. Great job, Tony and Dave, and, of course, Sean!

    • @datstheone1
      @datstheone1 Рік тому

If you use BlendIf to do the mids3 masking then this is dynamic unlike pixel masks. Couple this with the fact that colour grading layers are just curves and now TK9 identifies them by layer name and you can record actions that do set up global/sky/foreground etc layers that can then be manipulated by colour grading interface. You need to be able to do this manually as can't record TK9 button presses. For example
      - select Sky
      - create new curves layer which will be created with mask for current sky
      - rename layer to, say, "BC Sky (TK)"
      - double click on new layer and set BlendIF settings by alt clicking to split pointers and set shadows to 0/128 and highlights to 128/255 (TK9s Mids 3 values)
Run the action and select the BC Sky (TK) layer and click the Colour Grading button in Multi-Mask and balance&contrast adjust to heart's content
For Foreground action do the above steps but after creating the curves layer select the mask and us cmd-I to invert it and rename layer to "BC Foreground (TK)". Subject/background just use Select Subject instead of Select Sky, and for global just omit the selection before creating curves and rename to "BC Global (TK)"
You can then record other actions such as BC Landscape that runs BC Sky, BC Foreground, BC Global and finally selects the BC Sky layer. You have to then select Colour Grading in Multi-mask and colour grade sky. Then you can just select one of the other layers and you don't have to reselect Colour Grading because the (TK) in name means Colour Grading recognises that it is a colour grading layer and picks up any settings
Key thing in fooling TK9 colour grading by renaming a standard curves layer by adding (TK) is that you must not make any changes to this new curves layer, other wise strange things will happen.

I have been using TK9 since last Friday, and find it much more impressive than TK8 yet that was also excellent. Your video today was a really good introduction, and more, of the panel, especially the new features. I have been using BlendIf with the Colour Grading Tool to protect highlights and shadows for some time. I used either Blake Rudis’s BlendIf panel or an action to apply the protection. The reason for this choice is based on occasionally having to revisit my start image, after initial balance and contrast, to add corrections/ healing to the image missed until the balance and contrast adjustment was made. This saved having to redo the mask, as a result this has become my preferred method now.
Do you know or have a quick reference of the additional key modifiers etc as I forget them if I don’t use them often, or as is also the case did not know them. Like the CMD click or CMD Dbl click on the CX Sky button, or even the CMD click on the Cx Mask calculator button.

Although I find the "new" ways of doing balance and contrast clever and intellectuallly interesting, none seem significantly easier, more effective or much faster than the "old" TK8 process which I can quickly do with one hand tied behind my back. I simply do not see a worthwhile net benefit in investing time and effort to learn any of the "new" methods.

One of the best thing about the TK9 upgrade is that virtually everything you used to do in TK8 you can do the same way in TK9 with a few minor exceptions, but on top of this Tony has added things like the simple select and save of sky/foreground/subject/background and before/after & toggle layer/all other layers buttons, I think you will find that these little things will help you even if you don't make any use of the bigger additions like BlendIf.
