I've been listening to Gershwin and Rhapsody in Blue for more than half a century. I can't imagine my life without the music of this great man. Gershwin put American music in the concert halls of the world like nobody else ever has.
Undoubtedly, one of the greatest pieces ever written as a piano teacher, I give it to everyone of my piano students mostly when they’re in high school but I have a beautiful little 11-year-old boy. I’m teaching it to now who fell in love with this piece and he is just dynamic every week at his lesson and providing his own version of how he wants this to sound. I am so proud of George Gershwin and I bought and sent to my students and he lived 100 years what this man could’ve written he was so ahead of his time. Thank you for highlighting the hundred year anniversary of one of the greatest composers ever.❤❤❤❤
Thank you for teaching this amazing piece. My piano teacher had me learn it when I was a junior in high school. He played the accompaniment for me in a competition, and I was very proud to receive a silver ribbon. One of the most difficult pieces I ever played, but I love it so much! ❤
In high school I was the page turner for a young lady who was two years older than me. She played the lento section of "Rhapsody" on a grand piano up on a concert stage. I was spell bound, hearing this piece for the very first time. This was for a student competition. She received thunderous applause and won the first prize. I was beaming... happy for her and feeling special for being a part of her performance.
Whenever I think of Rhapsody in Blue, I always think of New York City. Such an incredible piece of work! Thanks for featuring Fantasia 2000's version of the song in this story. My all-time favorite piece from Fantasia 2000!
I've loved this Classic for more than 65 years. it started me on an eclectic music appreciation from Meat Loaf to Renaissance to Rimsky-Korsakov et al.
Back in the day when I was a kid, my father, a captain and company commander of the 101st would come home from training troops all day and after dinner, he would pull sheet music out of the piano bench, orange cover with black skyline, "Rhapsody in Blue," although he didn't need the music. Such a wonderful story!!!
Ferde Grofe is acknowledged here. He was resentful that he didn’t get co-credit. My friend & I were listening to Grofe’s Grand Canyon Suite & made the connection to The Gersjwin piece
I was fortunate to have played the bass clarinet part in high school (1995. Original instrumentation) and also the 1st clarinet part in an arrangement for band when I was in the army.
I love rock and roll but the all time greatest pop song writer is Gershwin. He's the only person to write a tons of hits and then switch over to classical and write a classic classical tune
Oh wow, I remember that United Airlines ad! I was around ten but was already familiar with the piece as my father had it on vinyl. Coming from a family of musicians, I told my grandfather about it and he wasn’t pleased. He came around, however, and came to the realization that it would lead to younger people (whose fathers didn’t introduce them to the piece) to appreciate it. R.I.P. Gershwin and Gramps!
Very nice tribute, thank you. Ive always been a Gershwin fan. My introduction to Rhapsody in Blue was the Deodato pop version in the early '70s, a top 40 hit on the radio. When i bought the 45 and played it nonstop, my mother had to bring me up to speed: "That's George Gershwin from the '20s. Here, I'll show you..." and she proceeded to bring out her old, old 76 record of Oscar Levant playing his buddy George's big hit in its original form. I fell in love, even harder for this than with the Deodato (and it's great!), and promptly bought the sheet music and learned to play it. Happy Birthday, Rhapsody in Blue, and rest in Peace, dear George Gershwin, a genius. The world so sadly lost him very young. His brilliant music remains ever young, vibrant, beautiful, and distinctly American✨🎹🎶🇺🇸
When Stephen Colbert asks his guests to name the one song, and only one, that they could listen to for the rest of their lives, THIS is the song for me.
I have always liked this tune, ever since hearing it in a Tom and Jerry cartoon, when I was just 5 y.o., that would have been back in 1976, and the tune was already 50 y.o. at that time, wow....
Gershwin recorded RIB twice. The first was in 1924. It was made the old acoustic way, meaning the soloist and musicians gathered around a large horn, and the master disc was recorded using sheer acoustic power without microphones or amplifiers. Gershwin recorded it again in 1927, this time with electric microphones. While the quality of the actual recording it better in the electric version, the acoustic version is usually considered the better performance, as it stays closer to the jazzy style of the piece. Both recordings had to be edited down to about 9 minutes so that they would fit on a 12 inch, 78 rpm record. The 1927 version is fairly common, but it took me several years to find the 1924 original for under $100.
In 2023, the LA Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl featured pianist Makoto Ozone. His improvisational skills were extraordinary! If you love Rhapsody in Blue, you must watch it on UA-cam!
Caption says Fantasia 1940, uses clip from Fantasia 1999. This is what happens when you delegate fact checking to AI and your editor is only there for a paycheck. You may think I'm being too cynical but they actually use the correct credit later in the segment.
@@DavidPogue Thank you. I've grown very cycal about this sort of thing recently. When I see a mistake I just assume management made that job redundant.
When I was young, I couldn’t wait to get to jr high to be in band. My friends played flute and wanted me to do the same, but I chose clarinet. After playing for about a year, on a trip to visit my grandparents, my grandma asked me if I knew about this piece. Of course I didn’t, I was too inexperienced, but she had it on tape and wanted me to hear it. We had to use the tape deck in the car since they only had a turntable in the house. It was the middle of summer and no AC in the car, so it was sweltering, but it is a memory I’ll never forget. Hearing that opening jazzy glissando was amazing and inspiring. After studying thru high school & college, and pursuing music into adulthood, I finally got a chance to play that wonderful solo, a tribute to grandma.
When does the EDM remix drop? ;-) Someone needs to edit all those varied snippets together into a full video piece.... Oh, not ME of course... I'm just an "idea man", a producer, I guess.... ;-)
A real TRAVESTY! During the Covid epidemic, The LA Philharmonic recorded a performance, at the LA Bowl, of Rhapsody in Blue, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, and featuring pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. It was magical. Thibaudet’s interpretation and performance was sublime. I watched it at least a half dozen times. And then, IT DISAPPEARED!!! LA Phil pulled it off UA-cam. Why? WHY? The performance deserves to be seen by all in perpetuity. To just bury it is a travesty.
I have no regrets seeing on of the MANY performances of it this year! I told myself "who knows when I'd hear it live if I didn't". I used to live in NYC and this piece was called a musical tapestry of NYC through time for good reason, and while I'd never move back, it does give me nostalgia and make me miss what I did love about that insane, magical, draining, amazing city :):)

The opening of Manhattan is just a stunning tribute to the song. Love it!!!
New York's anthem. I smile when I hear the clarinet at the beginning of this piece...
What a wonderful tribute to an iconic composition and composer. Great to see Michael Feinstein as the Gershswin scholar.
Thanks Paul for a wonderful concert back in February
I have enjoyed this rhapsody for over 50 years, now. It is a piece written for New York and it's timeless.

The opening clip isn’t from Fantasia (1940). It’s from Fantasia 2000 (1999).
Maybe Disney would not let them use the original.

That's right. Gershwin music would not have been considered serious enough classical music in 1940 to be included, plus it was too new.

I remember that from, what I believe, was a United Airlines commercial when I was younger. A phenomenal piece of music.
Ha. I still have a copy of that ad on some of my old videotapes from the 1990s. I believe Gene Hackman did the narration.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who first became familiarized with this piece through the Unite Airlines ad. So iconic in many ways
I never get tired of it. RIP George!
Classic Classical by a Legend

The very first "classical"/"orchestral" CD I ever bought. Loved it the minute I heard it. Made its home amongst all my rock and roll music.
I'm glad the orchestrator was given his due.
What a beautiful piece of music

United Airlines would do well to re-adopt the song

They never stopped using it! It's still in all the United ads.
What a fun video! And informative. 👍👍

The opening caption has it wrong. The Rhapsody in Blue animated segment is from Disney's Fantasia 2000 not the earlier 1940 Fantasia.
I believe parts of it were in An American in Paris, right?
