    Today we’re looking at a PRS CE 24. I’ve always thought that PRS made some of the most visually striking guitars out there, and those crazy figured tops always reminded me of a Rorschach test, which is what made me think of that opening skit.
    But the real question for me is this: I’ve been casually playing guitar for 20-some years. So why did it take me this long to commit to a PRS instrument?
    Welcome: 2:10

    What Paul Reed Smith did,was actually pretty simple:
    Take the best elements of the Strat and L/P, improve everything that sucks about these guitars (like outdated headstock design,shitty trem systems,no ergonomic neck heels etc.) and make a guitar that's visually pleasing and has a timeless look.
    And voila,you have a guitar that has become a modern classic.
    Now add to this,Paul's obsession with quality control (even the ''cheap'' SE models get a thorough quality inspection,when they arrive from S.Korea and after the korean factory has done already a quality control check,before shipping them out!) and you can easily see why PRS has become such a successful company.
    And about the man himself beeing a ''jerk'' and what not:
    When P.R.Smith started his company,he went and convinced Ted McCarthy (the legendary CEO of Gibson,the guy who pretty much designed all the classic Gibson models) to leave retirement and join PRS as a ''special consultant''. McCarthy pretty much tought him everything he knew about the guitar business and Paul always mentions him in interviews and how much he contributed to the success of PRS Guitars. He even named the most expensive,boutique PRS model after McCarthy,to honor the man.
    Gibson,the company who wouldn't be nothing without Ted McCarthy,hasn't put out a guitar model,named after the man to honor him,but PRS has,let that sink in.

      PRS gets the credit they deserve but I think your painting with a bit of broad brush based on my little bit of experience trying out a few. Thought the SE's felt just like you'd expect from a typical entry level guitar.

    I have one and right now I play it more then my core PRS’s. As far as single coil mode it is set up more like a tele then a strat, 2 coils 3 way switch which to me is awesome. Pull it up you’ve got tele style,push down les Paul sound. The core models I have, have the 5 way switch with more strat like tones. So the CE technically give you 6 tones. My dream ax down the road is a cu24-08 but way to much money, so hopefully Paul will do something like that with the CE. Great review.

    Congrats on the CE24, hope a year later you still love it! I always wanted a CE from the '90s when I had a PRS EG-2 which was HSH and was more versatile than the CE, just not nearly as pretty. Still a PRS fan, I now have a 2008 Korean SE SC Trem which I mod to make even better. But I think the CE24, with the Core pickups is the sweet spot for PRS price/value over the S2s/SEs and if I buy another PRS it would be a CE24 and it would stay stock forever.

  • @Bourgeault

    Mike, I've had the CE 24 since January and agree totally that it sits right in between an LP and a Strat. Not as robust a sound as the LP, yet more muscular than a Strat. I also agree it has the best coil splitting, which is actually useful...and I do use it about 1/3 of the time. Great review!

    The tonal things you talked about is exactly why I put new pickups in mine. I already have the single coil thing covered with my strat. And my vintage PAF humbucker tone comes from a hollow body Ibanez AS-153 that I put Classic 57's in. So I dropped some pretty hot rodded Seymour Duncans in my PRS and now it sings like a Les Paul, but isn't 4000 pounds and is a dream to play.

    The Silver Sky and the CE 24 are completely different. (I own both). I have been a Strat guy since 1974 and when I got the CE 24 (2018), I had an epiphany. An epiphany with one drawback.... No quack. I left my Strat in Texas, thinking that the CE 24 would do all that I wanted. I was wrong. So, in search of said quack, I went and got a Silver Sky, floated the trem arm and now I have quack. I love both of these guitars and get joy from them daily. Your vids are great, BTW!

    Awesome review. Just got an older CE24, pre 2008. The backplates are recessed, the carved top is like the one you'd get on a custom 24... it s so comfortable. On the other hand, there's no birds on that one. Still, it's flawless, as the newer ones seem to be.

    Just purchased a CE 24 today, and glad that I ran across your video while waiting on it to arrive. I have been absolutely 'nezmerized throughout my guitar playing career. I've always told myself that I will never prefer anything over Ibanez, but as of late I've been having some discomfort in my hands and decided that maybe I should try out something else. I spend this kind of money on Ibanez, so I figured why not get one of my childhood dream guitars!? Hoping that the fingerboard radius and neck profile will grow on me and that I can unleash my inner Karnivool! I'll follow up if I find time to set it down! 😃

    • @Fretboardcheesa
      @Fretboardcheesa Рік тому +1

      Guitar arrived today! First impression, not worth the price. After shimming the neck, oiling the fretboard, truss rod adjustment, and action adjustment, it plays great. Biggest con for me is the lack of quality of the maple neck. Feels like a mid 2000's Indonesian Ibanez. Also, the bird inlays appear to be white plastic. Feels like they really could've put a bit more into it considering it's a $2k+ guitar. Other than that, the fret work is great and body quality is as nice as expected. Just a bit disappointed overall with the poor factory setup and extremely dry fretboard. It has its place, sounds great with the pickup split options.

    I was 100% a Tele guy as well. I have to completely agree with everything you are saying. I am watching this after purchasing a CE myself. I have always stayed away from PRS as well, but for no other reason than I thought they were far too pretty and I would be scared to play it live. They went and released the Satin grain top. Now that is my bag. Hands down the best guitar I have ever played. I am not a pro by no means, but this beast sits in the mids like no other. It is absolutely amazing.

    I just subscribed and this guy came back and thanked me. I came to the vid from a Chris Buck video on the differences between an SG and a Les Paul. I commented (there) that i had one of each and that the SG was like a Greyhound racer and the LP like a fat mature bulldog. I think you understand. Anyway, i read a comment from one guy saying that neither hit his sweet spot, so to say. He eventually found the balance he was looking for in the CE24. This led me to here and now. The trouble i have is not the undoubted quality of the PRS, more it's the lack of a classic and distinct tone that epitomizes the music genre from the late 60's to the late 80's. You cannot fail to hear what someone is playing when you hear Stevie Ray, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower et al. Neither with Jimmy Page, Slash, etc. Furthermore, the most talented player i've ever seen is Guthrie Govan but what does he play? Nothing that bears a signature tone of the classic sounds of "that" era. It's like his talent is more important than his alliance. I don't know. Just my thoughts. I'd rather play a Strat or LP badly and hear what it is that I'm playing, than spend 2k on a guitar that could be a Chibson for 50 quid. For me, I'm playing to capture the past of my youth (I'm 61), so i'm not trying to forge a future. I'll stick with Strats, Teles and LP's cus i can dream about who i am, or could have been.

    Very excellent review, thank you! Close to pulling the trigger on one. The cool thing about PRS "split-coils" is (I believe) that they don't actually split them purely, but mix both coils partially to achieve a split coil sound without as much volume drop and less 60 cycle hum. Genius. Would be cool to do a PRS DGT review if you could. My #1 and just an awesome mix of LP, Tele AND Strat tones. Check it out!

    I just purchased this exact guitar from Sweetwater -- thanks for all the help, Joe! -- and I'm really fired up for the thing to arrive and spend many hours playing this pretty lady! I also got an IK Multimedia Axe I/O interface so I can play it through my computer. Also, the Axe I/O has a headphone monitor, so I can rock out at 3:00AM and not disturb the family and neighbors :D.
    Personally, I come for the land of classical guitar and using finger-picking style, so this will be my first electric guitar that I actually own. I have two other electric guitars that friends have loaned me, so I guess it's time to return them with a big ole thanks. I'm still wonder if the CE 24 can cover both the strat and tele I borrowed, and from what I have been reading and seeing here on UA-cam, I believe it can. I hope it can, anyway.
    Although my first love is classical, I also love blues, rock, and jazz, so I figured I might as well fork over a bit of extra cash and buy an axe that was well made and liked by most. From what I was reading, the CE 24 looks like it can cover all of those genres with no problem.
    BTW, they say that this is a limited edition guitar. Now I'm wondering just how many were made? Anybody know?

    I have new CE also in satin charcoal cherry burst. I also have a PRS SE 245, Gibson Les Paul with burst bucker pro pickups, American standard fender strat customized, etc. I think you made the right choice between the CE and strat or silver sky if you don't play a lot of lead guitar. Strat has that quack woody sound that sounds great for lead... and good for nice clean picking...but for everything else the CE does a better job in my opinion. I rarely ever touch my strat... maybe a few times a year. I generally like fatter tones that come from humbucking pickups. The ssl-5 fat single coil pickup in the bridge of my strat certainly helps... but I still prefer the drive on my ce. My Gibson and PRS both great sounding too... relatively similar/same... but I just like the snappiness, versatility, warmth, and magic of the CE with the 85/15 pickups... through the right amp obviously. I like the way mine sounds through a Peavy Classic 50 2x12 all tube amp... since many other amps seem to lack bass tones. Anyway I like your genuine opinions and review...

    Holy cow dude your PRS story sounds so much like mine. I'm left with no other alternative. Subscribed. The recess is a cost cutting measure. Those 85/15 pickups are also on a $3700 PRS Custom 24. But to bring it down $1700 in price, the bolt on, thinner maple top, non-recessed back cover and Korean bridge were a necessary. Even still, the bridge is PRS designed. The entire guitar is American made. Built in Maryland. I know how you feel about the Silver Sky and I'm going to buy one as well, but won't get rid of my CE24. It's just that, different. It's versatility alone makes it a keeper. Stands out from other guitars on the market. I've played since 1983 and only in the last year bought a PRS. What was I thinking? I play mine through my Fender deluxe and Blackstar Club 40 MKII. In the market for a Mesa Boogie Mark V 35 head and 2x12 vertical cab now. The sky is the limit with these combinations and my plethora of effects. I do look forward to plugging a Silver Sky into my Fender. Drool. Great video and look forward to more videos in the future.

    I bought a CE last year. By far, the best guitar I've ever owned and played. I occasionally will pick up my Les Paul, Strat, or Tele, but they simply don't compare in terms of feel, fit, and finish. If I could only own one guitar, this would be it. Thanks for the great video and spreading the gospel of PRS. Oh, I forgot, PRS is always in tune, my Les Paul goes out of tune constantly.

    I am thinking about buying my first PRS. I have been a Fender guy since re-discovering the guitar after not playing for close to 25 years. I love my Mexican-made strat, but I recently picked up some PRS guitars at Chuck Levins. Just wow. I agree with that feeling of a PRS being an extension. It is still a bit pricey for someone who just loves playing guitar tucked away in a bedroom. That said, every guitar seems to inspire different playing, so I think I will be bringing a PRS home sometime in the future (when I can get out of the house again).

    i have a semi hollow...I love that guitar. Cannot put it down since I got it...I also have a Silver Sky...the CE 24 is easier to play than the Silver Sky but ...the Silver Sky plays easy too...the sound of the silver sky pickups is just crazy....it sounds amazing... I have stopped playing my fenders and gibsons... the CE24 and the Silver Sky are the only 2 I play now...as for the headstock...give me a PRS anytime, no bad angle so the neck breaks easily and no string guides. Easily PRS is the most thought out, best engineered, best quality guitar I've ever bought.

    I only have the SE, ie. the imports, but it is fantastic in all the ways you have outlined.
    It is, in fact, my least expensive guitar - I have 2 Gibson's and a Charvel aswell as the Custom 22.
    I rate them all on a similar plateau, even though the PRS is half the median price o of the others.
    Anyway, the point is... I , too love the Gibson vintage tones..and even Fender by way of Charvel..
    PRS is just the perfect balance of everything you wa t in a guitar and everything you want to cover. The truth is, I shouldn't be getting swept up in thiis GAS apolcalypse that has struck us all like the great smiling assassin Ktulu!
    I would be better served with one great guitar, and I am considering selling all my hard earned guitars (that I foolishly bought new) and getting just one , close to perfect axe....a PRS DGT Goldtop.
    (While I love the look and value of the CE line, I gotta have that mahogany set neck. That's not negotiable.)
    P.S. Really cool video, Bro - thanks for the hard work and effort 👍

    Hey Mike! I actually noticed it looks like you have an EBMM Stingray on your wall 🤘🏻. This PRS and the RS Stingray are the two humbucking guitars I am really interested in getting right now. Currently have an American Pro Telecaster and love it, but looking for some warm sounding humbuckers. Which do you recommend between the PRS and the Ernie Ball?

    • @guitarmovies
      @guitarmovies  3 роки тому +1

      That's a tough call. The Stingray has more of the vintage sound, and it's an amazing instrument. The neck finish on those EBMM guitars are some of the best in the world. But... they have 1.625 nut widths with a medium C shape, which feels tiny in my hands. I prefer chunkier necks and I just couldn't get used to it.
      The PRS is more versatile, and I preferred the neck a lot. Wasn't crazy about the sound, though, but that's entirely subjective. I'd probably go PRS and switch out the pickups.

    • @KCChief1204
      @KCChief1204 3 роки тому +1

      @@guitarmovies right on! Both of these guitars have the satin neck, which I prefer over anything glossy. Good to hear the EBMM has that vintage sound, because the PRS definitely has that more 80s/modern rock sound. Both seem versatile, but I think I’m leaning towards the Stingray because the demos I have seen show some amazing warmth to its tone. My tele can get warmth in the neck but definitely has a sharper attack. Looking to balance out my gear lol. Consider putting a review up for the Stingray, I’ll be watching!
