    Kratos: Fate only binds you if you let it. Do what is necessary. Not because it is written.

    Heimdall felt like a classic god of war villain, and definitely one of the game’s highlights.
    He reminded me of Hermes in God of War III, and I was expecting him to crumple in a similar way once his foresight was overcome. But as Heimdall himself said, true power emerges when the time is right. He could more than back up that trash talk. Seeing every move you’re gonna make coming is one thing. Casually *bending time* is something else. That “slow down” moment after Heimdall is hit for the first time in centuries is such an *oh shit* moment. Then he’s regrowing limbs of Bifröst & laughing like the Green Goblin. He’s the only one who has pushed Kratos far enough to go full Ghost of Sparta. His death may not have been as bloody or brutal as the Greek Gods, but I’ve never seen so much *hatred* in Norse Kratos’ eyes.

    Ngl Heimdall is one of the coolest characters in god of war, the voice actor Scott porter did an insanely good job, his crap talk was very well written and his powers were amazing the dude was literally just weaving everything like it was nothing. Also the fact that he was the only god that kratos had to create a special weapon just for him so that he could defeat him makes Heimdall look even more op than he already was.

    I love how during the entire fight, Kratos was able clear his mind of any thoughts that wasn't his primary focus. A subtle detail is when he first used the spear after it was forged he said the spear was "...the first weapon a Spartan learns." So he wasn't purely thinking, just was partly acting on instinct, hiding some of his thoughts from Heimdall.
    Even Heimdall took note of this when he said "What is going on in that empty head?" Not empty, but clear of any additional thoughts besides his primary focus in that moment, to spare Heimdall. Heimdall couldn't even see if Kratos was thinking of Atreus and had to ASK if it was about him.
    But in Heimdall's final moments, where Kratos was losing control, Heimdall was finally able to read his thoughts and see what Kratos feared was turning back into, and says what Kratos is thinking right back at him: "Monster."
    Even in his final moments, Heimdall managed to provoke Kratos with his worst fear, when he finally lost control and focus.

    I would say kratos had proved the norms right for sure. The norms did say that heimdall intends to kill kratos son in asgard and kratots will do what he do best, and that is kill gods, plus what makes the norms right is that they dont go in details on how and why something happens they just know it will. Its not just the nature of kratos that is predictable but also everyone else including heimdall's nature. So regardless as to how and why it lead to heimdall's death, the endpoint remains the same, kratos killed heimdall just like the norms said.

  • @ChadElleston
    @ChadElleston 18 днів тому +10

    I can understand your bristling at Freya because you don't react to things the same way. But take into account everyone in the other realms reactions to Mimir. They all can't stand him or outright hate him, your opinion of him is heavily biased by his recent transformation. And as far a Freya is concerned he still represents all that went wrong for her, what happened to her homeland, her brother, and her despicable marriage. Not to mention Freya is not Anti Ragnarök because it prophesizes Odin's death which she desperately wants.
    And I know you care for Kratos, but the Norns said he will kill Heimdall. The reason for killing him matters little. The Norns “Should I bring him a crown, then? He still slays gods, but now he's sad about it? You are the sum of your choices, nothing more.” It is Kratos nature to Kill Gods. And until he breaks from that nature nothing will change. But I get the cope, lol.

    About the Norns.
    "You will know that Heimdall intends to kill Atreus", I was convinced almost 2 years that they were talking about that exact moment, the moment when they meet Kratos and tell him that exact quote themselves.
    It was always weird for me the "you WILL know", I was like: when? you have already said that, Norns...? I finally understand that they were talking about this Heimdall's statement: "oh Im definitely gonna gut him now", that exact moment is when Kratos knows about it. Not inside Norn's house, it was missunderstood (I think).
    And then Norns said that after he knows that ("im going to gut him" so, he intends to kill Atreus), Kratos kills Heimdall. But, instead, Kratos gave Heimdall a chance to live in that moment.
    He was not trying to break anything or thinking something related to prophecy, he was just trying to be better. "Not worth killing". That is the key moment in this fight, I think. What happened next was Heimdall's fault, due to his nature as you said in the video, he ends dying. Heimdall encountered a god-killer and choosed to not go against his own nature and be better (like Kratos did giving him another chance), his ows actions created a path to death. "Do what is necessary. Not because it is written."
    There's always a few interpretations about this kind of stuff but after beating the game a few times and watching a lot of playthroughs, based on the Norns dialogue, I guess that was what they were saying all the time.
    This is not my native language, sorry if it's poorly written.

    My thoughts on Kratos killing Heimdall: (a long read)
    Kratos 'chose' to kill Heimdall & it is justified. He even mentioned many times whenever they bring up Heimdall that he will do anything necessary to protect his son & he must die if he threatened his son. He premeditated that. He was just afraid to admit that he had to kill another God. It's not in his mindset & inner moral system (yet) that killing a heinous God is the 'justified' thing to do & he doesn't have to feel bad about it. He is still in the process of rebuilding himself.
    He also needed to hear back what he said to Atreus. "Don't be sorry, be better" & "Do what is necessary, not because it's written". He tends to forget those words everytime his fear arises. And when Kratos said to Atreus, "he left me no choice", it's just him being fearful of going back to his old ways of killing another God. And he also knows Atreus looks up to him. The pressure of keeping his own advice so he can provide a good example of them for his son must've been heavy for Kratos.
    And also, about the norns. They didn't provide any context what specific traits & decisions that needed to be changed in order to avoid the prophecy. There are indeed changes & personal development that Kratos went through & he is still trying to do so yet the results are still aligned to what the Norns & the prophecy have told them. I think it's just unfortunate for Kratos that he had to meet a God that has no redeeming qualities which created the perfect scenario to doubt himself even more for making a 'personally' difficult decision. (I want to emphasize the word 'personally' cause I know a lot of us would easily choose to kill Heimdall if we are in Kratos' shoes but i believe it's something difficult for Kratos).
    Those are just my interpretations. And honestly, i can relate on a certain level to both Atreus & Kratos with their personal struggles.

    Kratos has no problem doing what is necessary for his son to live. I believe if he were to die he’d be content and be proud of what his son has become.
    Plus for me personally he’s died so many times already. It feels like death for Kratos would be peace in a sense. Only for some reason he’d be pulled back out of hell either by his own volition or by someone else.
    Heimdall is a bully that never got what he dishes out, done to him. When I was growing up the adult men around me always said. “Everyone has a plan until they get the punched in the face.” Unfortunately for Heimdall he’s never had to plan due to his gifts of foresight. Which enabled him to never truly understand the gravity of the situations he’s in when an actual threat presents itself Ex. Kratos.
    His threats toward Atreus didn’t even stop after being mortally wounded, losing an arm. He literally said he was going to beat his face. In my mind he deserved an even more gruesome death.
    This is the second time Kratos elected to leave someone alone. And they provoked him both times, which lead to their own demise. But no one was more deserving than Heimdall. As a matter of fact part of me wants to believe if Thor new what he did to Thrud in Helheim, he would of done what the old Kratos would do. But I don’t think he would because of how deep Odin’s claws are dug in.
    I agree with you that he proved the Norns wrong. Because this situation does parallel Baldur’s. If you remember the journal entry after the final fight. It stated that even if they had let him kill Freya. Baldur would not have stopped his pursuit of Atreus, by the orders of Odin. The same would do happened here. Even if Kratos had wounded him again and left I am 100% sure Heimdall would tracked them back to camp and launched a full out attack. Out of the shame he felt by Kratos “deciding his fate.”
    The crater is such a large area. Had you been there with freya you’d get different commentary.

    at this point in the story, i was thinking about what Kratos said when Atreus killed the mama bear in the beginning. i’m paraphrasing but he said something like “intent does not matter, only consequences”.
    When they visited the norns, one of them said something similar like “he kills gods but now he feels sorry for them?!”. I think that’s similar to what Kratos said.
    What do you think about this? cuz he definitely did do a lot of ‘prophecy’ stuff but as you said, his intentions are different. Just something interesting to think about i guess, wondering what you think.

    Birgir saying he rolled is hilarious...Wonder if its a reference to games where rolling/spinning at the last minute saves you from insane falls or if it's just a reference to trying to roll so you don't break your legs
    I wonder if Odin gave Heimdall the horn because one of the prophecies said it would start Ragnarök...Would make sense to either give it to someone who most people wouldn't know how to fight someone who no one would miss. Maybe not but it's weird he wouldn't have kept it otherwise

  • @FelipeCRC
    @FelipeCRC 13 днів тому

    1:33:16 fun fact, i dont know if anyone else mentioned, but the line thay Birgir says here is actually a piece of the Havamal, one of the surviving poems from the norse era and while I don't remember the exact translation it goes something like: Cattle dies, kinsmen dies, and so does one's self dies but what never dies is the fame of a dead men's deeds

    He absolutely proved the Norns right. It doesn't matter how Heimdall died. They predicted that Kratos would do what he does best. And he literally did. Kratos can say all he wants that he's changed. But what matters is the choice you make. Yeah Kratos tried. But he failed. He killed Heimdall just as the Norns said. Change doesn't happen when you state internally you're different. It happens in the moment when it comes down to it. When you're tested and able to make a different choice. And he just didn't. It doesn't really matter that Heimdall couldn't stop provoking him. Kratos knew what is at stake and he made the choice to kill him. He could've tried pinning him down again or just leaving. I don't think Kratos' intent matters nearly as much as what actually happened. And what happened is Kratos did give in to his nature, I mean you can see it in his face when he strangles him. There's just murder in his eyes. I'm not being super hard on Kratos, but seeing how much it effected him, it's obvious he knows he messed up. Can Kratos make a different choice and defy his nature? Well if he can he's gotta do it quick cause time be running out 😅

    • @yadakakadu
      @yadakakadu 18 днів тому +1

      The norns a so smug about their prophecies which actually aren't. It's like saying the Sun proves you right by rising each day. Kratos changed, he spared Heimdall at first, it was Heimdall's choice to antagonize the godkiller with the very thing that would set him off and attacking him. Kratos even warned him. Both characters made a choice. Kratos made it clear that if Heimdall threatens Atreus he vill kill him and started to leave. Heimdall made it clear that he does not wish to be remembered as a person who sees reason in the face of death and made it clear that he will kill Atreus and immediately tried to kill Kratos. Ergo the death of Heimdall was his own choice and not Kratos'. It is further proof that he changed that he was so shaken up by the act. If you pay attention, you can see that while Ragnarok seems inevitable, there are already differences from the prohecy.

    • @lorenzobaxter
      @lorenzobaxter 18 днів тому +3

      @yadakakadu Thats just not true. The statement "I had no choice" is almost always false. Kratos still had a choice. Heimdall isn't choosing to die by saying vile things to Kratos. Kratos is choosing to give in to his anger. The fact is, he did exactly what the Norns said he would do. Thats what matters. He has not truly engaged in change yet. That can happen when he's tested like he was with Heimdall, and he still chooses differently. You dont get to put Kratos choice to kill somehow on Heimdall cause that doesn't work. Kratos could've walked away again. Could've pinned him again. But he gave in last minute. It's shown he's made the wrong choice by how he acts in the aftermath, how his diary questions what he's just done. By Mimir saying Fate is breaking them. I'm not just hating on the guy or anything, but this is not what change looks like.

    • @yadakakadu
      @yadakakadu 18 днів тому

      @@lorenzobaxter I would like to quote from a different franchise: "That is utter horseshit!" Heimdall chose to reject Kratos' mercy and tried to kill Kratos with the promise of killing Atreus too when Kratos started to walk away. In the past Kratos would not have given the choice to Heimdall to give up and live or persist and die. Also, it was a very subdued kill by Kratos standards. He was perfectly willing to let Heimdall live, but he was having none of it. Moreover if you consider giving multiple chances to a person who tried to murder you and honestly stated they intend to murder your family, you are not a good person. You are insane and are actively endangering your family. And realizing you fucked up (which Kratos did not actually do) is the first sign that you changed. In other words, that is exactly what change looks like. Change is a process, not a fucking light switch. You are wrong for so many reasons.

    • @lorenzobaxter
      @lorenzobaxter 18 днів тому +2

      @yadakakadu Well this is getting too hostile for this comment section I was trying to be chill in my original comment lol. But on a final point, I will say that thinking you're a bad person for NOT killing someone who is making threats is utterly deluded and a very dangerous line of thinking. You clearly can't read body language, cause he very much had a "what have I just done" face as he was coming out of his anger. Thats called an implication. One that says, I just did something that was not good. Theres no debate over that. The next step in Kratos change is making a different choice than to kill gods. That has not changed here. Heimdall is dead. Fate hasn't been changed. So yeah. Thats it.

    • @yadakakadu
      @yadakakadu 18 днів тому

      @@lorenzobaxter Sorry, but I am allergic to stupid. It is not about killing someone, but stopping a lethal threat to one's family. We have police for that, they do not. You not realizing that the person whose whole indentity could be defined as a godkiller being terrified about what he had done (that he had not given a single fuck about previously as it was his standard MO) is not a sign of change is terminally stupid. It is also stupid that you do not realize that sometimes people do not give other people a choice an force them to do things they do not want to do and will regret. There is a reason why you do not get life sentence or death penalty if yíyou kill in self defense. You are using a double standard by not counting Heimdall's choice as the choice of an individual capable of such. Kratos showed mercy, Heimdall denied it and forced his hand. Ever heard the saying "it takes two to tango"? It was entirely Heimdall's choice to fight to the death. And if it wasn't clear what I meant wasn't that Kratos didn't realize that he fucked up, I mean't that he didn't fuck up. His hands were forced and there was no other way. Your reasoning ignores or misinterprets the context and as such flawed at a basic level. To sum it up: 1, Kratos gave mercy, proof he changed, so you and the norns are wrong; 2, Heimdall did everything in his power to get himself killed, so it was not Kratos' choice, you are wrong again; 3, Kartos was shaken up by the deed, further proof he changed, you and the norns are prooven wrong again. 4, one has to protect their family, using what resources are available, you cannot deny this, we have police in most countries for such cases, the nine realms no not.

    I love your little rants about Freya haha, in large part because I felt a lot of the same things as you when I played. Ya know, maybe you just won't like Freya's character as much as the masses, and in the end, there's nothing wrong with that. The beauty of good art is that it impacts us each differently. Not just from our present thoughts, morals, and beliefs, but also our past and interactions we've had with others
    Have to say just how well done the Birgir sacrifice scene is. For it to hit that incredibly hard for a character that we really didn't have much opportunity to get to know better. "For Vanaheim!" gives me chills every time
    Love this area of Vanaheim. Next episode is gonna be a good one 😁

    As a person who also values mental health. I understand that people have different triggers. Triggers that may we see irrational & their causes that we may see relatively small. But to those who experiences them, they are vivid & real. And aside from that, we don't always know what kind of struggles & hardships a person may be carrying at every moment. So that's why I try to be mindful as well about what I say to anyone. But not to the point where we become hypervigilant to people's reaction that we also became fearful of everything we will say to others.
    People-pleasing. I've been there but thankfully not anymore. I learned the hard way that most of us are just wired & filtered to see things based on our lived experiences & even if we tried our best to please others, it won't always work. And, some may just simply have different views than mine. And I am guilty of having those 'filtered' perspectives as well before. And I do hope that if we can finally notice those pattern, we gain the strength to depersonalize them if they ever threatens our peace of mind. Easier said than done, btw. Learning & unlearning thinking & behavioral patterns... they take time. It can be messy. And not everyone have access to their own space in order to heal & grow
