Have same GM engine in an 1986 chevy 1/2 ton short bed with 4 speed trans, 3.73 gears. The engine has good headers, Quick fuel carb ( tuned) and MSD pro billet distributor w/6AL box, distributor is set up ( much better then stock HEI). It moves out nicely with part to 3/4 throttle.
Not a bad engine, had one in an 82 C10. Very smooth engine, never shook or rattle like these new cars do. Set and forget it, change the oil every 3K, use copper AC Delco spark plugs every 15K miles, and that's it. To tune these "stock" 350s up, first take the EGR off and block its opening on the manifold, if you still run an EGR. Then take the HEI vac advance off of the timed vacuum on the carb, and plumb it to a full manifold vacuum source (tee on back on manifold will work). Will have to adjust your idle and initial timing at idle a bit, but it will run like a scalded dog!
Good information here. I have an 83 Chevy K10 pickup that still has the original 305. The engine is tired and I'm keeping it running for now but I really want to swap it out for a 350 crate motor. You talked about not a lot of power but it's more than a stock 305 at 160 hp. Those 305 engines were a joke in a full size 4x4 truck. I'm definitely going to go GM but I've also looked at a ATK 350 with 325 claimed hp. Either way it will be a huge upgrade from a 305. All of the parts you mentioned I can swap out of my 305 when I pull it. Thanks nice video. I subscribed
It will be a big upgrade over the 305. I got more power out of it by giving it a lot of initial timing. This made a big difference. I also used the ported vacuum advance, not idle. That helped too.
Hey heads up i have same engine that i just put in my nova. Set it @36 total advance connected to ported 12 Degrees inital runs with lots of power and runs cool. I do use distributor they call for.
I watch "Engine Masters" and all they do is dyno different engines. They took a Goodwrench engine and dyno then did a top end kit with cam and valve springs and headers and picked up a whopping 130 hp without raising the compression ratio.
I replaced my tiered 305 with this same engine on my 86 c10 around 12 years ago. I paid 1,300 with shipping. Had no Issues with it, other that a oil pan gasket leak recently. He is differently right on the horse power. More than the 305 but if you want a more aggressive motor look into the other options and know they are going to range in price. I purchased mine from Scoggin Dickey out of Lubbock Tx.
There are two bolts located in the housing. With the oil filter off you will see them near where the filter screws on. Yes, one from a 305 will work, just make sure you get the Delco gasket.
Run open headers. At least it will sound like it's got 400hp. Actually your car sounds good to me. It's not like you're planning on racing it or anything.
I have mine with true duals, no cats and cherry bombs, and I believe 1.75” pipes. Sounds great, not too loud, but not quiet. When revving it up, it’s definitely loud. Neighbors don’t like how loud it is if that says anything
Cool I was told somtimes they do. I just got 350 265 hp so pulled covers. Which were really glued on. Lol and just got a new set of crower lifters and set myself. Thanks for info though.
Can you please post a video driving down the road, maybe step on it once or twice. I'd like to see what you mean by lack of 'power'. I'm in the market for a similar motor and many people say it lacks power but that can be relative. Some people are putting 400hp motors in their cars so it can be relative.
The car has some brake problems at the moment, so a drive will be difficult. Regarding the power, I have found ways to get a lot more power out of it. First and foremost, the engine loves timing. I advanced it way past the factor setting, and it really woke the engine up. It now has plenty of power for regular driving, but I'd never take it racing. If you are looking for a daily driver, this engine will work out fine.
Sadly soon all combustion cars, bikes including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime (BAPFO=Bundesabgasbespassungsverbotsverordnung)!!!!!
I have a 54 chevy and this video was a real confidence boost for a v8 crate install. Thank you, my friend!
Good luck with it Brian. I know you will like the switch.
8:1 compression means that you can put a turbocharger or supercharger on it
No. It does not.
The basic GM crate was changed to 8.6:1 compression and got a basic 195 hp,with a Quadrajet and decent headers it can go to a realistic 250 hp

That motor with headers, rpm manifold, 4 barrel, stock highway gear in my el Camino, it ran high 14s. Plenty of power, time for a tune.
My 3rd gen has one, definitely keeps up with other 300hp cars.
instaBlaster.
Did u leave the valves as is or did u readjust them
@@lordsauto He says further down that he
left them alone. I would also.

That is amazing. Do you know which cam they used?
I'm interested in the cam as well.
good video, headers will give you alot of torque
wow very smooth nice. thats great..

I remember when these were around $1200.
This is a daily driver, get around town, shop truck road trip engine. Nothing wrong with that. Just know that going in.
Exactly. Mine has been perfectly reliable.
Thanks very much for this very helpful video!
How do you install the oil filter screw on thing ? Can I swap the one from my 305

Oil filter adapter is what it's missing. Makes no sense to me. Maybe they want you to put the one on from the original motor .
I bet that old-style air filter is choking the hell out of that engine, although it does look nostalgic. Otherwise good video.
I have the same engine, I put it in a 61 C10, what's normal operating temperature for you?
180 degrees, the same as my thermostat.
Doesn't it say its rated for 290 hp?
190 hp. It will make 260 with headers and a 4 barrel.
GM DOES
offer a 350/290 version. It costs more.
How's it sound?
It is quiet, but it all depends on the mufflers used.

Mines pretty loud with 2 1/2 inch dual super 10 flowmasters
What kinda oil do you use
Diesel 15W40. It is a bit thick for the cold weather, but otherwise it works well and has zinc in it.
@@whattherust it doesn’t affect a gas engine that type of oil since its for diesel ?

Real freedom only in America.
Damn, they don't make it anymore, jegs or summit
I didn't realize that. It is unfortunate. I still have mine and it runs great.
Nice 350 crate motor you have! Check out my crate motor in my ‘85 Firebird!
Bout the same $ and get way more bang for your buck to just get the Vortec 350! This Goodwrench is an ok engine to cruise in but expect sub 200 hp.
