RIP Ronnie Barker, Richard Beckinsale, Fulton Mackay, Brian Wilde & Patricia Brake.
Hard to believe they've all gone now, but this episode did go out on Halloween 1975...
So it goes!
After the 3 series of Porridge, there was a series of 'Going Straight' which was about Fletcher out of prison. The writers of both shows, did classics of The Likely Lads, and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet
I can't tell you how popular this show was....half the country would watch every episode...young and old. Upto 1982, there were only 3 TV channels.
Me and my late Dad used to watch this every week without fail, if it's on now somewhere ill put on and watch it.
I was a kid when this was on TV here in Australia and loved the show, you are about our evolution as we unlock one secret that unlocks countless more things and as time goes by we are becoming better and and evolving faster with every passing year, I was talking to family about it recently and compared to the kids today we had it tough but didn't think that way at the time, we were happy. When I was a kid, I had a AM radio in my bedroom that was it, no other entertainment at all, eventually I had a portable black and white Tv and I thought i was doing well lol You are going to see some amazing things in your life time technology wise. I'm a little cranky I haven't got a flying car like in the old cartoon The Jetsons yet, we were expecting to have one by 2000, science let us down lol
Love this show and still watch it on Britbox...my wife and I were married in 1961 in the UK she was 19 and I was only 18 we are still together 63 years later and living in Australia.
That's amazing!!
Yes when i was younger there was no internet or mobile phones or computers and music was either cassettes or singles or long playing records for years then all of a sudden it was cds , mini disk players then jumped very quickly to dvds and then streaming, downloading. Who knows what would be like in the next 50 years.
Pink toilet roll was considered luxurious back then. In certain institutions, (like schools, hospitals and even prisoners, I'd guess), they would normally have something that resembled tracing paper. Or, at least, shiny and not exactly what you'd call absorbent. So, getting hold of the governor's supply of soft toilet tissue would have been like gold in stir, I'd imagine.
Izal medicated paper.
I got sent to the toilet to get loo roll in primary school to use as tracing paper.
yes i remember pink loo roll ... it wa quite common back then
The short answer to your question of have things changed so much since the 70s is yes.
Godber and Ingrid got together as a couple in a spin off series entitled Going Straight. The series predominantly however followed the travails of Fletcher in his life outside.
Coloured toilet rolls were the norm then, unless you had the hard shiny type. It was to match the coloured bathrooms suits that people had. I am sure you could get it in avocado as well as pink. The spare roll would be hidden under the knitted skirt if a plastic doll with its legs down the middle. You would need a fiited cover on the toilet lid which matched the pedestal mat round the base.
Pink toilet roll would be Andrex. The one with the puppy.
IMDB says they used plasticine to make Patricia Brake 'stand out' if you see what I mean. 😉😁
I quite like the music at the end......and her content 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I loved Megan's reaction to pink toilet roll.
Bit of trivia. Patricia Brake (Ingrid) said the director asked her to use plasticine to enhance her attributes. Anything for her art.
I read somewhere once that naff is the equivalent of the f-word, and nerk is the equivalent of the c-word, used to allow the program to be broadcast
"Naff" is polari (gay/theatrical slang) and is an acronym for a young man who was attached (Not Available For F*****g) it was used a lot by Kenneth Williams and Hugh Paddick's characters Julian & Sandy in the 1960s radio comedy series "Round The Horne". Nerk (or nurk) was used in place of Berk which does mean the c-word (Rhyming slang - Berkshire Hunt...)
I know what you mean about technology I was born in 1949 and my parents had to go to my grandparents house to watch the Queen's coronation on their tacos they were the only people we knew with a tv. Now hee I am lying in bed watching you on you tube on a tablet.I don't need a crane to lift it
There's a follow on series called "Going Straight" that has Lenny and Ingrid together as Fletcher is released...
Also featuring a very young Nicholas Lyndhurst as Fletcher's son Raymond!
@@NuWhoSucks They won't know who Nicholas Lyndhurst is...
@@daveofyorkshire301 MR has been watching OFAH so she might know who Rodney is.
In 1975, the average English male got married at 24 and female at 21
To put his remarks to his daughter into context
Hi Megan enjoying your reactions you are looking radiant as always
Thank you! 😊
Love the daughter, she is my favorite
Most of my cousins were married by 25 in 70s UK and buying a house it was the norm!
How times have changed!!
How far we have come, from radio, to TV, to computers and now the greatest advance - pink toilet roll.
It's like the first plane take off.to landing on the moon. 66 years..
I meg there is a follow on collection of porridge call going straight .
Lovely reaction Megan. This was from the days when comedy was comedy. Clean and wholesome. Try Ronny Barker in Open All Hours which is based in Sheffield. He shows just how versatile he is
Thank you! Yes, Open All Hours is definitely on my list :)
In the 70's you could get naff coloured toilet rolls to match your naff coloured bathroom suite ... not just pink! A coloured suite was 'posh'
You could get toilet rolls in all kinds of colours. It became less popular because the dyes were poisoning fish.
Evening Megan how are you? Love watching your reactions & that smile is so beautiful! ❤❤
Thanks Falcom! 😊
The normal age for marriage hasn't been a constant trend to being older. It has varied from period to period. I think the post war period was one where settling down young was the norm. I suspect it was a reaction to the war, its why there was a baby boom.
For the past 300 years, the average age of marriage has stayed at around 26.
good stuff!
I was obv. innocent, but I did 18 months in 1999 (2 pills... :/ )
This is the most realistic depiction of prison life since 'Scum'... lol
'Should have asked for 'My Ding-a-Ling'...' - astounding to think that Chuck Berry's only UK No.1 was a suggestive audience-participation number. Mind you, he was another person who knew all about the relationship between music and the law.
The man who played "Crusher" was the one who portrayed the Nero character in the "Relax" video.
He's dead too. Died 20 years ago.
@@NuWhoSucksTony Osoba & Christopher Biggins must be the only surviving original cast members.
you need to look at the sequel called going straight,
The average age of marriage is later and later, it depends on economics. In the Seventies it was slightly earlier than before or since!
The sexual revolution certainly must have reached Muswell Hill faster than anywhere else. Ronnie Barker was born in 1929, while Patricia Brake (who is also, sadly, no longer with us) came into the world in 1942. Think about it...
From the 70s to the end of the 90s life was better in the UK - people went out 3 nights a week met with friends, made new friends, explored their country and other countries, went shopping in clothes shops, went out to restaurants. Technology is beneficial, but it has created a generation of socially awkward and vulnerable people with limited common sense and practical ability. I'm glad I grew up in the late seventies early eighties and lived through the excellent 90s. Today times are not for me.
😊😊😊😊😊❤ , My Memory can be unreliable but i think young women in the 60s/7 0s were more of a mind to marry and settle down in their 20s ,marry younger, marriage was still norm for couples ,couples living together was unusual, having a child out of wedlock was sill frowned on/scandalous in the 60s, the sixties didn't swing that much outside of London.Love your reactions ❤
pay gobba a honour a do a tribute vid to kate beckinsale :)
richard beckinsale father of actress kate beckinsale...
patricia brake was great! RIP
Four candles?
Lenny start dating Ingrid in the comedy sequel Going Straight.
Spoilers.
You can still get pink toilet roll haha
Can you?! 🤯
@@MeganRuth Megan Ruth & the Quest for the Pink Toilet Roll. lol
@@MeganRuth yes if you look around it's definitely my colour Lol
It's prison life.. Six? 5:26 he done well? Mind you why nick a pork pie when you can nick a? Make your own mind up. ❤
Yes social attitudes have shifted a lot - homophobia was rife and widely accepted, sex was still funny …
Sorry but I have to disagree with you saying that in the 70s families were still reliant on the radio. I was born in 1950 and remember watching television from the mid-50s onward. Admittedly there were only two channels in the UK in the mid to late 50s, and it was 1982 before we got a fourth channel, but television in the 60s and 70s was great and although radio was important, people were watching loads of television in the 60s and 70s. The 1977 Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special was watched by 28 million viewers, and according to the BBC is still the most watched comedy programme in British television history.
I only said that because in the show they mentioned families listening to the radio together. Compared to present day radio was much more prevalent. I know TV was popular back then to :)
