I actually do that move all the time, it's relatively easy once you get the hang of it. I do use a staff but it's pretty much the same principle, only with a different handle. I'm actually surprised Ray Park didn't do that.
One thing I always wanted to see in a Trek show or movie was a good, exciting bat'leth fight, performed by someone who could handle the weapons like these guys, instead of the plodding, slow, poorly choreographed swing-grunt "fights" the shows always had.
CUBETechie I agree it's a bullshit weapon. While it looks cool it lacks any ability to gain momentum and strike effectively i assume that if the klingons were real they would have left this weapon as a ceremonial weapon and chose spears instead.
@@kabutabi5272 In fact I think Duras used a normal sword when Worf brought his bat'leth. I sort of wonder if the fight would have been better if Worf also used a normal sword.
When I first saw this video I totally failed to notice Hardcore Holly in the back, loving every second of this. But Ray Parks certainly took to that like a duck to water, and who knew Garrett Wang, whose character, Harry Kim wasn't a user of this weapon on the show, would be so good with it?
These two need an appearance as Real Klingons in a Trek episode. They both have their own way of wielding and it's amazing what they can do. Hopefully we get something in Picard with a proper Klingon slaughtering
This isn't the real Harry Kim. He's the replacement they got from that alternate universe after he got sucked out into space. (this is why he's actually useful here ;)
That's great, but neither of them are fully embracing the weapon's essence. They're both forgetting that it's an extension of your arm. You can take your lead hand and hold the furthest grip to hold the rest against your arm to use it as a shield, this way it moves with your body and can't be knocked out of your hand. This is great for body blows in close combat. But there was nothing wrong with how they were using it. I'm just saying, they focused on distance, like a typical sword and the bat'leth is NOT a sword in the human sense. NO DISRESPECT meant, I'm just a big fan of Klingon fighting styles.
There ia a petaQ' UA-camr named " Shadversity " who says the Klingon Bat'leth is STUPID and goes on to explain why, But I doubt he saw this video, or read " The Klingon Bat'leth training book.
The bat'leth is not a weapon to be used like a double lightsaber. It is not a quarter staff. It is an axe, with a tight fit allowing broad, sweeping slashes and application of it's points while keeping to a rather limited space. (This was partly done so that these wildly swinging weapons wouldn't damage the expensive set). Fan theory is that the Bat'leth was developed by Klingons for use in siege warfare, within the tight corridors and passageways of their castles where soldiers might have to fight one abreast. The Bat'leth would be uniquely suited to this, being able to make any of it's attacks (cut, jab, slash, or even thrust) where longer weapons would be limited.
@@MrBottlecapBill eh . . . When we look through history, there are a LOT of weapons that look stupid and goofy, but obviously had to have their place for one reason or another.
I see the bat'leth as an excellent innovation I like to call a weapon hybrid. Observation 1: The Bat'leth is a shield! In the simplest sense it is like having a shield in front of you that can deflect any attack in front of you !!! The Bat'leth can control the space in front of you. Observation 2: The Bat'leth fights like a Staff or Bo. The swordsman has always had issues with staff weapons because of its ability to deflect and redirect their weapon. Observationn 3: The Bat'leth has powerful cutting motions and thrusts. A swordsman would have no easy time breaking and winding against a Bat'leth. A master swordsman half swords all the time and looks to strike around a gaurd. I would not want to get too close to a Bat'leth! Observation 4: Someone skilled with a Bat'leth is more a counter puncher then a beserker!!! There is real skill in its profficiency and more to the point when engaging in battle it will give tremendous defence while issuing its attacks. If you think it so easy to disengage a Bat'leth I recommend doing it in sparing!!! The blade either gets deflectsed too far and too slow or it loops around and is caught by the obvious sword trap. Observation 5: The Bat'leth is capable of half swording itself .... in otherwords at the right point you can fight left handed or right handed. My favorite guard is holding a wide grip pointed 45 degrees upwards. Blows coming down are easily deflected away and I can switch to my right hand on the bottom assisting a descending cut right or vice versa to the left with my left hand on the bottom. Observation 6: Do not be fooled by its range. The Bat'leth is released all the time for thrusts and sweeps and combined with precise strikes, blows and kicks designed to make the Bat'leth an extension of the Body. Observation 7: The Bat'leth is a perfectly balanced weapon on both sides allowing for Flexibility in close quarters. Also it can deliver that weight to their blade with leverage along the path. With practice and a knowledge of Aikido the Bat'leth uses dynamic cirles in defense and issuing attack when their is space. They enter around flanking the opponent or they turn against the force into their own attack.
Well, as a bit of a sword fighter myself(I wield a sabre), I agree. Never tried a bat'leth, but from my observations it looks like a large two handed edgy guard. It's really good at defense because it's based on the design of a parrying dagger, so shortening the distance to your opponent wouldn't be a problem, and one could really beat a swordsman with it. I wonder how would a fight between a sabre fighter and klingon would go, should be very interesting.
@@henrykkeszenowicz4664 If the Sabre fighter has the initiative and can take it to the Klingon quickly they can use their reach to their advantage. If the Klingon can close though with their weapon they could out leverage the Sabre with the Bat'leth...
Does anybody have the video of them skipping with nikki rutters lightsaber whip? that was really funny. - Just to add that Garrett Wang and Ray Park were awesome guys. They were so friendly and chatty and happy to pose for any pictures and answer questions. Two Lovely blokes, garrett was asking would folks be kind enough to follow him on twitter as he's only got about 39k followers. Get adding him please people:@GarrettRWang
I wish garret had broke out those moves in the fortunte son episode those women where attacking him with bo staffs he was holding one i remember first seeing that episode screaming "come on harry! Do your Kung Fu moves man!"
It's bad, but not worst. You can really parry and defend with it, but the reach is very short for a weapon of it's mass, which is compensated by it's defensive design which would allow the user to close distance while parrying or even catching the opponents weapon. It's a very weird design, but not completely and utterly useless.
Harry Kim with a Star Wars shirt
Darth Maul with a Bat'leth
ULTIMATE CROSSOVER!
crazy right ? :P
"DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER!"
holy shit! Harry Kim is outdoing Darth Maul....I mean he does have homefield advantage technically, but damn...

please Ray Parks trained in tradition Shaolin and Wushu is a hobby of his...."Garret Wang....was lucky he didnt hit himself...
outdone darth maul.
still won't be promoted from ensign .
Ray has the grace but Garrett has the technical skills that would make any opponent shit their pants if they faced him in battle.
Marvel: We have the biggest crossover
Harry and Maul: Hold our weapons....
This is like geek overload. My brain hurts: Darth Maul, Harry Kim, Toad, Imperials in the background....ouch.
Garret Wang's technique is a surprise!! And Mr. Park is astounding. It's quite a weapon in trained hands!

WallyWinka maybe because this weapon is bullshit?
The problem is that the weapon in real life/props is too light for it to be threatening in the way they portray them in the shows.
CUBETechie I agree it's a bullshit weapon. While it looks cool it lacks any ability to gain momentum and strike effectively i assume that if the klingons were real they would have left this weapon as a ceremonial weapon and chose spears instead.

This video makes me think that UA-cam needs videos of Garrett Wang official bat'leth lessons. I would watch it.
it was nice to get the ball rolling to get this happen

This is awesome, they seem pretty down-to-earth.
Only if Harry Kim was like that on Voyager
My nephew just had one made for me for a Mother’s Day gift ! I love it!
Ray Park is so cool he even makes the bat'leth look like a proper weapon.
David Coutts He’s that one kid in high school who got his black belt early and then just started racking them up like Pokémon cards.
It *IS* a proper weapon: a Korean martial arts association declared it the first practical innovation in sword design in 400 years.

Woah, Kim learned a lot of about Kinglon fighting!
This isn't the real Harry Kim. He's the replacement they got from that alternate universe after he got sucked out into space. (this is why he's actually useful here ;)
We need a miniseries of Harry Kim and Darth Maul wielding Bat'leth's and Lightsabers working together as galactic crime fighters.
Ray Parks needs to be a Klingon, in one of the new shows, in a movie, anything!!
People should have respect for Ray Park for being a expert in armed and unarmed martial arts

Kim expressing the extension of the warrior within.
Hardcore Holly in the background thinking “nerds”

It's really a stupidly inefficient and awkward weapon lol. The Kingons would never use such a thing if they were a real warrior race.

learn what deer knives or chinese hook swords are. the bat'leth was based on real world asian weapons
