A friend was renewing his swimming pool decking. The company delivered all the old hardwood to my home. All the fixings were high quality stainless steel screws. I made the front gate panel, steps, garden edging...
I’ve noticed that a lot of people sell their above ground pools and say if you take the deck apart you can have it. Seen that a LOT!! Great channel you have going! God Bless you!! ❤
Having a pickup truck is a bonus. I'm just naturally hyper aware while driving and I work near many shipping companies. Some of them have brand new lumber out back near the dumpsters from Un-crating special shipments. Also whenever I see a Roll Off dumpster that was dropped off I might stop at take a peak. Usually a remodel job and I found some great pine and stairway railings amongst other things. New construction used to be a good place to look into the roll off as well but now days they usually fence the entire property while building.
I love deconstructing to use the wood for later. I had a pine dresser that had seen better, so I attempted to shorten in, since I need to shorten the length of another piece of furniture and I wanted to test it out first. After I did it successfully, I deconstructed, ended up with some nice clean 3-4’x 6” pieces as well as well pieces. Great for shelves and some other things I need to build.
We have a big garbage day in our town once a month from March through November. The metal scrap collectors are out in droves. There are a few people scouring for reusable articles. The good stuff mostly shows up around moving day.
Find the business in your town that supplies large pieces of granite/marble counter tops. The wooden packaging for those massively heavy chunks of smooth stone is robust, lengthy and frequently comes with heavy duty hardware bolting it together. Other times it's just nails but you never know. They just cut it up and toss it into a dumpster so if you get there before they cut it, you can score some good stuff for free on a daily basis. Bring a battery powered impact driver and deep sockets, a large pry bar, a saw, a good sized framing hammer, an adjustable wrench and a big 8 lb. or so maul and you can break down a truck/small trailer load in about an hour. I like to drive home past the big box hardware/lumber stores and laugh maniacally.
That is cool! Yeah I live in the woods so I get my wood from dead trees and get a neighbour to mill it up for me. I have so much wood it is crazy. I am also a carpenter and I can tell you that any demolition site has a dumpster full of wood. Just call your local builders, they may even bring it to you if you ask really nicely although a truck really helps to be able to pick it up too
Nice video! I appreciate the tip. There are some simple projects I have in mind that this type of lumber would be perfect for. Thanks for sharing! P.S. Production quality and funny addition of bloopers was definitely worth the sub. Looking forward to your next one.
Many years ago, when I worked in the bedding industry, everyone getting rid of their waterbeds (which we weren't supposed to take by policy, but the salesman all made it part of the deal, and wooden bunkbeds. Not too many waterbeds left these days. I've got bookcases and benches and there was a kitchen table all built from those frames.
I’ve sourced some fair quality timber from fencers or people pulling out their old fences and decks. Hardwood fence pailings are great as garden borders or as panels where a ‘rustic’ look is the goal.
I just took my Playsets down. I had to burn a few pieces … the ones with rot or was not salvageable for other projects. The higher altitude beams are saved off to the side for future use. Great idea besides pallet wood.
Very interesting idea! I’ve been getting my dimensional stuff from construction sites. Just ask the foreman if you can rummage through their skiff of wood headed for the dump. It’ll have lots of cement boogers all over it from laying the foundation. And lots of nails and screws. But they all clean up just as good as pallet wood, just needs a bit more elbow grease. We’ve got two play sets out back. One of them our son outgrew a few years ago. But the wood is still useable I’m sure. The other one we might get rid of next year… and now I know what I’ll do with it all! Edit: Omg… the prices these people want for their ratty old play sets is bonkers! One was asking $400 😂
I just saw one in our area listed for free in excellent condition but we couldn’t take it because my daughter needs HOA approval to place it in her yard. Such a bummer.
I found also going to static caravan parks asking for wood that would usually just get burnt on a hill, or whatever way they dispose of is a good idea, dismantling old deckings from static caravans, helps the company spending on labour dismantling and gives them a good name that they reuse old materials. I also said its a half charity business i have, i dont charge for any materials i have got for free, just labor. Including the labour to dismantle it. Any businesses that are big and dont care for salvaging good wood thats been used Especially when they are about to have a visit from managment and they need things cleared
One thing people need to consider with a lot of the play set wood is that it’s been treated before. Not necessarily a deal breaker, just depends on the project. You also obviously need a trailer to help haul off all of the parts and then dump the remaining so not exactly viable.
Great video! Thanks man. You can (quite often) get usable lengths of lumber from construction sites. It saves them from having to pay someone to dump them.
You're spot on - I ran a construction company for a property mgmt. company and I cant count the amount of playsets, garage storage or benches, and even sheds that we had to remove when properties got rented. I even ended up with Tony Gwynn's pitching machine from one back yard. (Soon to be my 72" grinder.

I worked as a custodian at a college. At the end of the year when all the students were taking down their lofts and throwing the lumber in the dumpster...well you know the rest of the story....
Great idea! I just looked and Facebook Marketplace is full of them in my area. Is there a good way to tell if they are made from cedar or treated lumber? I assume the treated lumber is less than desirable. (I’m a newbie)
@@WineberryHill True. Cedar is probably desirable if making outdoor furniture (most likely for me). Seems the Rainbow sets and Costco sets are cedar although Costco is likely from China so who knows what you’re REALLY getting.
Your compost got worms? Needs some? Know how to spot worm areas? You dont have to dig em up. You can use "worm churning" collect and deposit them within. Show them that, speeds up your decomp and has other uses as well of course. Cheers.
First, I love your channel. Second, I am deft. I must watch with C.C. I can't read what you are saying because of your sponsors ads come over the closed captions. I don't believe I am the only one. I know you make money from your sponsors. Sorry.
It occurs to me that if you like to fly drones, you could easily canvas multiple suburban neighborhoods, and put targeted door-hanger fliers on just the right doors, advertising your playset removals (or whatever bulky wood structures they may have).
