I'd never use that kind of cooking device so close to myself, when all that could make an instant fireball and 3rd degree burns, was some failing hinges and burning liquid all over himself. A gas cooker at least has an on/off switch and is definitely safer. I still wouldn't sit with something like that straight infront of me, when the only escape would be through havoc.
Fire extinguisher sure, but most important part is avoiding accidents in the first place.

As a photographer myself, it took me a lot of time to realize that, and once you're in peace with this affirmation you take a huge weight of anxiety which it's no more than the desperation for finding things to include in the frame, things you think you need, but you actually don't.

Please, if u push accidentially against the sliding table and this stove is moving, the whole van will lburn out with u inside. Get a gas stove with cartouches like the rest. Also fix the sliding table so that when u use it it is stable otherwise if u spill your cup of coffee or soup u will get badly burnt.

Hi Thomas, me again. My alcohol stove, which I have had for 40 years, is an Optimus stove made in Sweden. It is all aluminium and has two pots and a lid/frying pan which all nest in together with a strap into one unit which looks like a small sputnik. The burner has a lid with an "O" ring seal so you can carry it around with a full or half full burner which never leaks. The design is brilliant with airflow which allows it to boil enough water for two large mugs of tea in 3 minutes. I hope they still make them as they are the best ever. Cheers again, Bruce

Trangia make a great camping alcohol stove setup. Stores away in about the same space as your pot, butyou get 2 pots, akettle, frying pan, base, windsheild, burner and a beautifully designed handle. Highly recomended.
Biolite might also be up your alley- but not sure how they go in the damp world of the UK.

This trend towards (but not fully into) minimalism has been inspiring. Spent a lot of time thinking I need to learn “epic” last year, and though I’d still like to get better at those techniques, this is the style that’s always interested me. Single exposure, allow subtle DoF and lens distortions to exist, let the colors (mostly) be what they are, don’t panic if there isn’t a foreground to set the stage. Nice photos like a nice cup of tea.

Its sea coal, I collected it a few times with my gran when she was teaching us about her time in the war. Once dry you wrapped it really tightly in newspaper, and burned it. The main issues was it burns at a higher temperature and can melt your fire grate or set the chimney on fire. Nice video BTW. 2X👍

Honestly speaking, I don't think that this "desperate looking for a foreground etc 5 years ago" that you talk about would be a mistake. It's like learning a language. First you need to learn basics, the most common techniques. Later, as you learn more and more, you start to notice totally new aspects, new possibilities of using the language to your advantage. I think it's the same with photography. As you learn more, you start noticing more, you start to realise that you can avoid a scheme and go your own way. That's awesome about learning process which never ends. Thank you for another lovely video Tom!

You picked the perfect glides for your desk. Those side-mount glides support about 140 lbs, and need deliberate force to move. The surface won’t easily (accidentally) slide in.
Alcohol stoves are pretty common for backpacking, don’t think any forest fires have been started by them. Plus, Everclear is a multi use product: fuel, sanitizer, and it’s drinkable!

As a user of a Samsung Galaxy S20 I don't think you showed the best feature for landscape photography. Having all those lenses means that we now have a pocket viewfinder that we always have with us. Using the phone as a viewfinder to scout for compositions is an amazing tool for landscape photography. I find it very useful if I want to try out a composition without having to take off my backpack and get my camera out. Speeds up the process of composition hunting and makes it so that I can focus more on the actual attainment of the images I want. And now with all of those lenses we have the focal range to represent all our camera lenses!

The big tip is to buy Laboratory grade alcohol (more expensive and you have to order it from your pharmacist) but it burns super clean and doesn't leave any black soot on the base of the pot and it doesn't smell. Worth every bit of the small extra money. Cheers, Bruce

Thomas just a quick heads up, I go car camping/day tripping in my defender and the best, best way of making a brew is using a jetboil. Its super fast, super easy and for boiling water its fairly economical and saves of burning your van down or smelling like an old petrol can after wiping up spills and drips or trying to pour any left over fuel back in the bottle! Hey Tom, also converting a van myself. Regarding gas, in the UK you don't need a gas safe engineer to install LPG in your campervan, although it might be advisable to have one do a check. Campervans are classed as leisure activity vehicles - LAV. Of course gas should still be installed safely with a carbon monoxide/smoke detectors/fire blanket/fire extinguisher handy). Undergoing this process myself at the moment with a Propex/thetford burner and have been talking to gas safe engineers about it - they have recommended I do the works and they check it otherwise it'll cost an arm and a leg. Only need a gas safe certificate if you want to rent the van out.
Anyway, thought I'd drop that in in case you reconsider a gas system. :)

Finally able to take a peaceful image and NOT need a foreground, distinct mid-ground and leading lines, etc. It is wonderful and relaxing, at times, to simply capture the beautiful view in front of you. I get it Thomas!😁.

Take a look at a Trangia with a spirit burner, something like the 27-2UL. it comes with kettle and pans as well as a windshield, option for a gas burner or fuel pellet burner. It packs up small and is pretty light.

I could feel here how safe that was, some alcohol and an uncontrolled flame in closed space. Hope you don’t get stressed some day when a bee enters your van...that fire pit can easy bee a firebomb. Compared to gas with a regulator...wonder how the thought process was ;)

Black stuff is 'Sea Coal' - growing up in Hartlepool in the 70s/80s you used to see guys with old Bedford Army trucks (Surplus) driving around the beaches and shovelling it up to bag and sell. True fact! :) Love your Delica - If I had one I'd get the boxier 80s cabover version

Check out Dometic Origo stoves. Super safe alcohol stoves. I've used the 3000 in my camper for the past 6 years and it's been amazing. No big flare ups on ignition like Trangia type burners. They are designed for sailing boats where obviously fire safety comes first.

I do appreciate these minimalistic shots. I just do what I like : I tend to find camera club judges make comments like "there is no subject / there is no focal point" and they score very badly, so you need to be in it because that's what you like to do. And I like to do these. Also appreciate the comments about lockdown and motivation as I have struggled during lockdown especially where I live and we have basically not been allowed outwith the city boundary for months. And I confess to being jealous of your van!!!

Yes, the stove mentioned already is a good deal better. Also there are some alcohol stoves self contained tank with a pump for fuel transport very tidy and a lot safer. And you prefill tank for use. Outside the van... lol

The black dust on the beach is coal, there is a coal seam off the coast and when there is a storm lots of coal dust appears on the beach. The solution for the van for cooking is a portable gas cooker which is very small and uses a gas cartridge. My son is an HG1 Trucker and he uses one in the truck. Have fun with your van.

I won't say you did it wrong, but if I were to make a sliding table like that, I'd have hinged an additional piece of wood on the top so that when it's pulled out, the extra piece could fold out behind the piece you have. That would give a bit of additional room when making food, or editing on your laptop. This would also prevent smaller items from falling behind the table surface and getting lost.

One risky cookie session there! You should buy one of the cookset with spirit burner from Scandinavia :) The set is super compact, contains pots and windscreen - and most important: You can close the lid on the burner when finished, instead of awaiting a burnout! You also might have the kettle. The set is the classic camper setup here, and also usable on open fire:

Alto cumulus lenticularus, lens cloud, oragraphic lifting, cap cloud etc are all very similar but occur in different settings. Lenticular cloud usually sits over the top of standing waves or rolling clouds. Oragraphic lifting is lenticular cloud that occurs over terrain (you’ve seen this in Patagonia and the Himalayas I think). Very simply it’s when different parcels of air (usually different temps and moisture contents) pass over one another, as the warmer more moist air rises it will form cloud as the wet and dry bulb temps converge to the same point. The cloud you saw wasn’t lens cloud or lenticular per se but perhaps the top of a rolling air mass that preceded a storm.

I’m so far from being an expert only anything but here’s a radical thought: If you’re just boiling water for drinks and rehydrating food. ... a small kettle perhaps? Also wondered about adding a small extractor fan in the ceiling? Off to find a spare granny with some time on her hands, a hard-boiled egg and a straw ...

Nice to see you out n about after all the work on the van, which l really enjoyed. You're a perfectionist. I agree about the gas being dirty, but alcohol is flammable, loved the big flame for your cuppa. Hope you've got a fire extinguisher. Any way, love the photos. Sky Sea Sand, perfect, less is definitely more sometimes. The Samsung looks interesting, will have a look. Love your videos Thomas, take care

It's great how honest you are about your view on pictures. Even if such simplistic approach to some scenes may not seem the best way to "sell content on UA-cam" it's great that you just share what's appealing to you and why ;)

seascape, square, horizon in the middle, nothing more on it but beach/sea/sky, that's what I've been shooting for a few months but on BW films (long exposure, short exposure, every kind of weather, any hour of the day) on all the beaches I go, so I dig your last shot a lot !
