- Dead Rising is a game that originally would never be meant for speedrunning, however, thank to the work of the Dead Rising community we were able to make a 6 hour wait speedrunnable!
This video details what TimeSkip is and how it affects every Dead Rising speedrunner today, plus it answers just how exactly people are able to compete in this game.

an interesting concept for a mod would be to spawn all survivors and bosses at the same time and see how speedrunners would route a “saint” run
I have a video doing that albeit you are required to play with the 8 survivor cap limit and the natural game progression for timeskip, it's called All Missions or All Survivors I believe. I actually go over it briefly in this video too as a category
Watching your content has gotten me back into playing Dead Rising, thanks for reminding me what a great series the game is a part of!
It's an absolute classic! I encourage you to check out the mod if you'd like to try a different pace as well

While I have never been into watching speed runs (I'm more of a "challenge run" guy), I absolutely respect what the speed running community represents and brings to the gaming table: They are a community of people who have such love and dedication for their game of choice that they learn everything possible about it; they dissect the game down to its base code all in the pursuit of answering the question of "What is the minimum time required to beat this thing?"
As a game programmer, I absolutely love seeing people want to learn how a game "thinks". Dead Rising is a game very dear to me, so seeing that others loved it enough to create a whole system around ignoring one of the core systems (that being the time passing mechanics) just makes my programming senses smile.

@@Ecdycis No arguments there! I was just hoping someone found an exploit to skip time etc :) for me, modding out the timeline itself takes away from the game/enjoyment of watching the run

I went down a dead rising rabbit hole a few days ago, and now I've found an amazing speedrunner with extremely informative and entertaining content, lucky me.

I think it's awesome I love speedruns of the game.
The funniest part about that is realistically the only Dead Rising designed with speedrunning directly in mind is DR4. 3 DOES have a speedrun mode but it's more of a co-op partner search function.

Honestly, the fact that there's no in-game way to skip time is baffling to me. Especially since after completing all the cases you basically have to just spin your wheels for an hour or so waiting for the game to end.
TimeSkip is a fun way of playing the game because of that

See, I know this is for speed runners, but I could never use this mod. The normal time limit already makes me anxious, having less time would make me having a heart attack.
Speed runners are stronger than me and I'm fine with that.
It makes it a bit easier to balance since you don't need to do EVERY requirement. For TimeSkip itself, it's a great way if you just want the main story

I remember commenting here a while back about how i wish i could speedrun this game on console, I'm so glad that's finally going to be possible because of the skip time feature in the deluxe remaster 😂
The wii version is not the same game and essentially plays like a resident evil game, but I believe it might be more speed run friendly from what I remember about it.

Was hoping there was something found that activated triggers early or some other sort glitch to help with the timer. Still cool that its an external program/mod, i know some people can be uppity about those in speedrunning and this seems to be a prime example of it beneficial, but i was really hoping to see some crazy wacky thing that could work on console to nake the run times match up with pc :/

This game was always such a fucker. Had dark souls vibes in a way with the bosses and difficulty but ultimately the fact that I’m a completionist and it felt like you always had to pick and choose what you did or didn’t do unless you did everything perfectly, made me bail on it pretty early. Don’t get me wrong I love it but I wish I could have had a bit of room to breathe and make the decisions instead of just doing the best I could with wherever I was because there was no chance of actually getting to the new thing thrown at me in time. Idk this game is just strange, what makes it amazing is also what makes it bad and very difficult. Bit of an enigma

This game is Only 6 hours?! Infinity Mode takes 14 hours and honestly that's what I felt the main game was like.
6:30 You're telling me people didn't think to start a Speedrun at Lvl50, or use the Megabuster??
They did start at level 50 originally, the total of Dead Rising 1 takes about 6 and a half hours for Ending A I believe
I soon as he said mod. I don’t count that as a speed run. Since it’s using outside help instead. I don’t mind it was glitches or what not but not just a TAS run.

This is no different from Sunshine players using a missed save to skip the long intro cutscene. At the end of the day, speedrunning is done for fun. If a game's community thinks that using a mod makes the game more fun, who are us onlookers to tell them otherwise?

I like the timer. is a skateboard really faster than making quicksteps?
Much faster
Quickstep requires you to find ingredients and a blender, and even after all that, it has a limited time it is active. If you want the most out of it, you need a book. The Skateboards only take up one space each, can be fortified with books, and are easily accessible.

Can someone make a mod where the in game clock goes 2x times as fast? And someone tries to do the challenge.
The internal clock of regular Dead Rising takes about 6 hours to beat the game. With the Timeskip mod we beat it in 30 minutes give or take and I've done this numerous times on the channel

*Solve* is not how I would put it, more like by passed. Idk with that title and knowing that this game has a fixed timer I was intrigued on how speedrunners found a work around it, like some weird tech that causes the timer to move faster after you save someone or something, leading to interesting routes, but modding was not a thought I had. Don’t mean to be rude but the title is kinda clickbait, it should be like “how mods made this game more fun to speedrun” or something

@@Ecdycis I wouldn't say solving a problem using external methods is fair or actually solving the issue, leading many viewer like myself that saw the video title to believe that dead risings forced timer had a unique quirk that would let speedrunners fast forward it somehow. Like I said, while its not a bad concept to make an otherwise unspeedrunable game speedrunable, the title suggests an actual, legitimate solution that doesn't tamper with the very code of the game, despite how "good" of an idea it is.

I've been a fan of Dead Rising for many years but I was sad to see that the only speedruns you would ever see of it were overtime runs, which while not un-interesting did miss out on a lot of the main game. Overtime is cool, but it isn't really the main "Dead Rising experience" in any of the games that feature it, so it's nice to have timeskip because it gives people an opportunity to play Dead Rising as a speedrun game while also enjoy the actual meat of the game.

Genuinely been thinking of trying out the game in general (bought it recently) and now that I hear there is a NG+ mode I am more interested than ever!
NG+ helps massively if you are struggling with the game. Your save file lets you restart the story rolling over xp or continue when you die. Makes it much easier
@@Ecdycis That genuinely sounds fantastic! Always preferred NG+ in any game, so hearing it is part of it just fills me with delight!
NG+ gives so many more hours of genuine fun to me and on top of that it helps LOADS with controlling the basics of the game!

So I believe I reference it in the video and have another video describing it a bit more, console runners would normally do Overtime instead which had an active Speedrun scene for sometime

This solution is also officially added to the new Deluxe Remaster so it seems like a good idea

Ecdyics could you do "Dead Rising 2 off the record but the clock 4x faster" I seen people do it and a good speedrun.
I've already done that, check out any of my runs on Off the Record. It's not super hard and the speedrun already uses an advanced mod

Dead Rising 1 - Executable that needs 0 install, you run the program along the game and hit Connect
Dead Rising 2/OTR - You need to overwrite the Datafile, there is a guide on the SRC page

It normally needs to connect, I run an older version but it should be rather simple. The speedrunning discord may be more helpful for exact setup, all I can guess is running it in Admin mode

Since Dead Rising 3 does not tie the case timers into the time needed to escape the city and Dead Rising 4's vanilla content and Chop till you drop don't use the time limit at all there's no point to the time skip mod and as such this video obviously avoids them as much as the randomizer mixed drink.

"solve" suggests an in-game exploit or other method was discovered, they just developed a hack and some arbitrary rules on it's use to remove the problem entirely from the PC version.
We developed a way for you to not wait 6 hours. You miss 0 gameplay, I’ve done the run without the mod and was literally able to beat Dead Rising 2 at the same time
Honestly, I never like the mandatory timer in Dead Rising. There was literally too much to do, and the timer just held the game back. I actually liked that Dead Rising 4 got rid of the timer. Well, except for the Frank Rising DLC, which brought it back for whatever reason. A game like Dead Rising shouldn't have an in game timer.
With that said, I do have respect for the Speed Runners who found a way to beat the timer. I personally don't do spee runs. But I can respect the dedication and perseverance that Speed Runners show.
I like both methods but it's a charming thing that's been unique to DR

We are speedrunning all the actual content, if you want to stare at a wall for 4 real hours you can do that. I’ve done it before and I can assure you this method is much more fun and was such a great idea it’s being added to the new version of the game

A lot of people are averse to mods in games and it’s natural, I think people usually just think we are skipping gameplay and not literal waiting.
72 hour mode normally is kinda funny but you can straight up beat Dead Rising 2 at the exact same time as Dead Rising 1 with the downtime
@Ecdycis yea im not opposed to mods in games heck they are the only reason i play skyrim or minecraft but gmod is literally built on community mods and its one of my favs
As usual : a game's speedrun is only 10% optimised until the day it arrives on PC... Then it actually starts to get interesting
It's always like that, consoles are way too restrictive to allow any kind of worthwile competition to occur

@Ecdycis yeah, without even talking about using external software, code data mining or third party apps using, just using keyboard + mouse allows you to gain a ton of time and learn new strategies in like 95% of games out here

@@Ecdycis I am not arguing cutting out the waiting. Just pointing out speed running is so pointless. In order to enjoy the game to the fullest, i had to cheat the other way, kill the timer completely, and then push it forward when i finished all the points of interest for that period. I actually love what they did with DR 4 which was to do away with the timer completely. I get challenge, etc. but due to the compressed in game time, it was needlessly stressful to finish any task on time (side stuff i mean).

If you have to mod a game to 'fix a problem' with a fundamental gameplay mechanic, you shouldn't be speedrunning it.
But we do and it is fun, the alternative is waiting 6 hours. As well it's because of ideas like this that the new game will have built in TimeSkip
🙄 so it's 100% reliant on a f'ing computer mod or a flat out glitch. This gives me the same vibes as the "speed runners" on Pokemon red/blue who glitch out of the first forest straight to the champion room behind the Elite Four.
If you want to wait about 5 actual hours staring at a wall you can do that. We beat all of the games actual content and the only thing removed is literal waiting
@Ecdycis Whatever. I will never be a mods guy personally. It's just not as authentic as recording the real deal on an Xbox360. I can respect the quality of life improvement, I guess.

TAS is normally a proof of concept where you have a computer input all movements to showcase a perfect run. This just removes waiting for 6 hours, you have to play the game still and regular runs tend to be about 40 minutes. By the same logic using a controller or a PC to play a game is also TAS
And to think the new remake is going to allow players to do essentially what the first iteration of the cheat version used to allow you to do.
It seems like it might work with direct cases
