41 years later and this film STILL holds a special place in my heart. Graduating high school, leaving old girlfriends, going off to college, meeting new ones. ;-) Dated, but at the same time, timeless.

The legend is indeed true, as I can vouch. From first seeing this glorious film in the 1970s, it took me until 16 April 2014 to prove it. Find out for yourself - go to Venice with your one true love.

Often, you will not know whether to laugh or cry. A brilliant movie of teenage love.Dianne Lane is cute.
Sir Olivier is fantastic.Music at the end will haunt you for days.Another great accomplishment by George Roy Hill.

“Haunt”….great choice of words because the ending theme has had a spell over me since I first watched it back in jr high. Diane Lane and I are almost the exact same age and I fell for her so hard in the movie……..and always wanted a girlfriend with long blonde hair like hers.

Mike Valbuena it's NOT you. Hollywood doesn't make films made for adults - just adolescents (of all ages, mentally and physically). It's cheaper to make films with minimum dialogue, colloquialisms, (which need to be translated, understood), than filming a comic book, or a video game.

I remember watching this fascinating movie together with my family sometime in the 1980s when I was about 15 years old, about the same age as the protagonists in the film. We shared their excitement and hoped they would reach their goal in Venice. When they finally managed, their kiss and embracement below the Bridge of Sighs during the ringing of the bells were very moving. Thereafter I never saw the film on TV again, but I remembered that the main actress was called Diane Lane.
Later I came across her name in other films, when she was an adult actress, and wondered if she was really the girl from this movie. Now I want to watch the movie again - first in my native German, then in English and French, as in these versions I don't understand every word, but of this movie, I want to understand every single word, because its message is so important.
Unfortunately there seems to be neither a DVD nor Blu-ray nor another release, although I saw it in German on German television back then, but such great films are no longer shown there. That's a shame, especially since it even won an Oscar for best music and was directed by Oscar winner George Roy Hill (his "The Sting", in German "The Clou", with Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Robert Shaw was brilliant). I didn't even know these two facts until recently.
Now, as a James Bond fan, I noticed that interestingly "Moonraker" was filmed and released at the same time (1978/79) and shares two filming locations with "A Little Romance", namely a French castle near Paris (probably a different one, but very similar), and the canals of Venice with tolling bells. The two film crews could have met on location through this coincidence. Not really relevant but interesting.
When I was to Venice in 2008, I didn't think of "A Little Romance" but was busy with "Casino Royale" from 2006, which also has a great romantic score by David Arnold (deserving another Academy Award, if you ask me) accompanying the Venice scenes, and also a stunning main actress, namely Eva Green.
Next time I visit Venice I am going to take into account when the evening bells are ringing (is the large Marangona bell ringing at 18.30 everyday, or dependent on the season and thus the time of sunset :-) ? But maybe it would be better to wait until all five bells are ringing, probably on Saturday evening.

The Affecting Elegance of Olivier Permeates the Bittersweet Splendour of this Teenybopper Illusion ... Much akin to the immortal words set forth from the unhinged lips of the doomed "Col. Walter E. Kurtz"; I wept like some Grandmother, during the closing sequence of this beautifully poetic George Roy Hill delicacy. The classic clichés n' contrivances of the rich girl / poor boy adolescent soap opera completely wins out in posh-style thanks to the sharpest knives in the top-drawer performances of Diane n' Thelonious; poignantly accompanied with the deftly-layered genius of a lovely Laurence. That final freeze-frame of "Daniel", with us knowing full well that this proud n' passionate working-class boy will never see that poor little rich girl again is simply devastating ...

    45 years old!
Director George Roy Hill presents a little romance story starring a young Diane Lane in her film debut and Thelonius Bernard
People don't like smart kids, some parents prefer their kids to not be such shut ins, not everybody has courage and imagination, are two people destined to be like everyone else when they grow up?
The two child actors are so adorable together and the pickpocket Julius character is likable
The movie does slow down to a crawl during the middle though so you'd think there would be more urgency
As far as young romance stories go though it's cute and innocent enough watching two souls in a hurry to grow up even if breaking all the rules is necessary
