Salmon Strikes Compilation

  • My Great Lakes salmon fishing highlights of 2014. Only the best dipsy and downrigger smashes featured. Filmed in NW Michigan.
    It was more difficult fishing this year than in years past. The thermocline never really set up, which makes for difficult salmon trolling conditions. We still made the best of it.

    *We tried this out finally yesterday and it worked awesome! **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it’s we put it on our 16 foot aluminum boat and trolled with it. We didn’t catch anything but it was still fun and worked awesome! Can’t wait to use this baby again and hopefully reel in a big ole fish! Very easy to install and set up.*

    I like these guys the best because they remind me of what I and my fishing buddy used to do. Their boat is a little better set up and slightly bigger than what we had but man did we have some fun for about three or four years off Scotch Bonnet when the fish used to stage off there in droves in the late 80's to early 90's. The charter guys would be out there and we'd be catching them like crazy. They thought we were nuts because the boat was only a 16 footer but she was stable. The best days we had were when it was rough. One after another. If you have never seen the rods go like that and then fought a nice King, Atlantic, Coho, or Rainbow you don't know what you are missing. Trout are alright but they don't fight like the Salmon that is for sure.

    Great videos JB! I bought a new boat this summer very similar to yours and Im getting it ready for next years big lake fishing. Ive looked very close at your set up with your riggers and rod holders... if you could do it again would you change anything or keep it the same as you currently have it? Perhaps rod holder trees versus pedestal. Different riggers? Thanks in advance.

      16.5' Lund, 50hp. It does fine on the Great Lakes under the right conditions. I watch the forecast closely, then go! If it gets dicey, I head to port.

    your fishing is better than ours up here in AK, yes we have feeder kings in Homer, but our spring fishery sucks now. also we can only fish one rod per person out of a boat . our king salmon are in bad shape. I did hear of an 80# king caught and released in the kenai in July, but I like to ocean fish in the spring.

    • @littlegoobie
      @littlegoobie 5 років тому

      After eating the fish in AK, you don't want these fish. hahha. trust me. For sure, there have been some really bad returns in AK over the last 10+ years, but that's fishing. I still remember my first experience with a run failure up there and it was ridicously bad. You coudln't buy a fish to put on the line.

    You don't want to do pumping when redlining in salmon.. They have soft mouths and a lot of states require barbless hooks so you don't want to give them and slack best thing is is to just hold that rod high up and just real other than that GREAT video

    I prefer the sound of the reel going ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ over music any day.one pointer i have is i learned from the charter captain , when holding your fish put your ring finger at the fishes ass and hold it with all your fingers hidden behind your fish.Even thou the fish are big it will make them look even bigger ;) As in my picture

    I have used the electric and 1050 riggers for many years. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbjBedIFSQ6Y6rp8DrCC_aoWMZI8GUpmH I bought these lake trollers for my 15’ Grumman sport boat and they worked almost perfectly for fishing lake trout. The only negative is that they seemed sticky on the retrieval, so I removed the spool and greased the underside of the stainless steel plate with some lip balm (the only thing I could think to use that I had on the boat with me). Then they worked much more smoothly. I don’t recommend using these down riggers if you’re planning on fishing deeper than 50’ as you’ll spend more time cranking than you will fishing.
