We’re going to associate certain parts of them as ‘character artist’ features; whenever you draw a character artist, you draw at least a little from them. XD They ARE the character design now.
1:40:30 I kinda like the idea of Shyvanna human form being buff as hell, but her dragon form being kinda scrawny (not like she is today, that's too much). Playing a bit with the idea that her human allies see her dragon form as a unbeatable monster, but when she is put against another dragon, she is the underdog and the other dragons see her as "too weak because she is too human". A cool idea for example, would be the notion that she would gain more power if she stayed in dragon form 100% of the time, but she doesn't by choice. I know it isn't the most unique view, but I think a lot could be done with it.
Me personally, I think the majority of her buff should be from armour/scales rather than her actual body if that makes sense. I feel like it's so much cooler for skins.
you know what I really like about this redesign in her story? it gives option to a new story for Jarvan IV, maybe something like "J4 redeemed", when he decides to side with Shyvana, risking his royal status and loyalty to his subjects. Or maybe a "Tyrant J4" (which I think it exists already) in which he decides to finally slay Shyvana, of course, he fails but it's able to bring home a prize to show loyalty to Demacia: a piece of her horns or armor UGHHH the possibilities with this redesigns are so much and so full of angst
As a concept artist and illustrator I love seeing discussion of the lighting trick Jack does at 51:00. Concept is so much more about those big shapes and strong decisions. Using a big opaque brush to rough in your lighting early is great even for illustration. You’re expected to be able to paint in the industry, so practice a lot and then let your residual knowledge hold your concepts which is what you’re hired for.
Watching this video is fascinating in terms of seeing how ADHD medication affects focus over time as it kicks in. It is the superpower that leads to TB's excellent commentary. Also, I love Subjectively so much. The Pokédex project is so freaking good.

Oh this video was released before they annoucned the region-based SEASONS. They say Shyvana VGU is postponed until she thematically fits into the respective Season.
Regarding Shyvanna's face, I REALLY like the close-up one we get, where we have a sort of boney ridge across her nose bridge. A more pronounced nose bridge, that is then covered in something approximating scales, to indicate the armoured snout she would have when transformed into her dragon form, I think would be a good distinctive feature. Something that makes her facial shape even slightly inhuman, so that it's not just a skin-deep difference, but literally a different bone structure.
One thing I do appreciate with the Games Workshop design stuff is they tend to eschew the 'sanding down the edges' or 'averaging out the design until no is happy and no one is mad' philosophy. They'd rather make 20% of the audience super happy and everyone else feeling meh or repulsed. Cow Elves with massive hats (where's my Yak cavalry? Get on that), Steampunk zeppelin dwarves with beard-guns, etc.
@@sirbobulousand AoS has reputation for having much better minis. Can't wait for the AoS to become the main cash cow, so they put the muzzles on creatives. But yeah, all AoS armies are distinct and fantastic.

I am still early into the video but the part about making a "better" character than the corporations because as fans we have the creative freedom resonates with me so much. I am recently obsessed with the antagonist of my fandom and her story is quite underwhelming so far. I make fan comics of her to connect her to other characters that enrich her story and utilize the existing narrative elements. She is my queen and I am unbound by any canon or marketing concerns. One thing Shyvana is missing is actual visible hair that is flawing , similar to a lion's mane if you will ,to enhance the wild nature ,they did it right with Sett ,i find it weird how they refuse to make female champions seem more wild or ruff ,Nidalee could benefit from something like this aswell .

I think you could get away with the "gauntlets" by just making them a part of her body. Give her big scales and spikes that make her arms look bigger and more dangerous. Then keep the "dragon jaw" aspect purely as VFX when performing certain moves like her Q. It could even take the shape of some sort of big spike or blade coming off of her wrist that then unfurls into a full wing when she transforms.
I love seeing Skyen react to content made by other people who make league of legends content, it's really cool seeing his opinion on things and seeing another person ramble and talk about the design or the lore for fan content. It's just really cool seeing this level of enthusiasm for another creators work reflected in others and seeing other people excited about the same things. You can get that kind of enthusiasm in a way from the comment section, but it's not really the same. Like, you can't really do a two hour rant in the comments section like you can in a video.
Considering how Arcane has connected him to the origin story of almost every character in the show, I'm imagining a Demacia show would somehow make Shyvana being half-dragon Singed's fault.
It wasn't Arcane that did that, he has been tied to like half the roster: he has directly created Warwick and Mundo and maybe even Orianna, and is indirectly responsible for the majority of Piltover/Zaun champions, has worked with Darius and Swain, and created chemical weapons to be used in the Noxus-Ionia war so he is also indirectly responsible for the majority of Ionian champions
@EnchantedMantis - Singed never interacted with Mundo pre or post rework. Before, Mundo did those experimentation on himself to create the perfect assassin, post-rework it was under torture in that asylum he was confined after messing with a mob boss/Chem baron. Now Orianna only became related to him because of Arcane. - Darius never met Singed, as the general was not involved in the invasion of Ionia, he was in Freljord in a suicide mission at the time.
Both videos were fantastic, Jack's 4th Rework and your reaction, commentary, and dissection of it. This truly was the perfect video to de-stress from the Arcane mental breakdown. lol
If it wasn't clear, this is sarcasm and a joke. I love TB Skyen and would wait for the end of the earth for his Arcane takes and analysis. He is the lore running in my vains.
My own point of criticism is that I wish the wings in the Dragon form were a lot more pronounced. If her dragon form is supposed to be Shyvana at her absolutely most powerful version of herself, and more importantly unrestrained, then her wings being folded up and hidden hinders that for me. All parts of her thar make her dangerous and powerful, to me, should be fully on display. And also larger wings in general. It’s admittedly a personal preference, but I like my dragons with giant wings. Larger and more pronounced wings could give some cool opportunities for added design features too. But other than that I think this one Subjectively’s best, they did some incredible stuff with this one.
I'm gonna be honest, fucking get rid of this wyvern ass dragon body that Shyvana has, give me full wings on the back and 4 legs, this is a real dragon, this is more of a personal thing then actual criticism but man, I just very much prefer wings on the back and 4 limbs for true dragons, MH does this well since all the normal Monsters are wyverns and the only things called dragons are the Elder Dragons, that had this body plan of one pair of wings and two pairs of legs, it just feels right for a dragon, that's why I'll never fuck with LotR or GoT dragons, wyvern mfs looking ass
For reference, the things in the back of Stegosaurus are commonly called "dorsal plates" and they're enlarged scutes. The technical term is "osteoderm" (literally "skin bone") and these can have a huge variety of shapes and sizes (plates, armor, spikes, shells, etc).
If I wanted to play a wolf character, Warwick already exists. I pick Shyvana because I want a DRAGON. Wings, tail, jaws, claws, fire breath. I do not want a redesign with those features missing.
I agree that elemental drakes should have a gameplay effect maybe an evolution mechanic like Khazix, but instead of it being bound to her R, it's bound to how many unique dragons she kills, with Elder drake evolving her R or something like that

I remember her Journal of Justice entry, it was during a time Jarvan went missing. Demacia in a uproar and suddenly he turns up at the gates with TWO hooded figures. To make things more confusing while Jarvan and his retinue return to the castle, Garen offers to escort(and great friends IIRC) but Jarvan stops him. "This is a royal matter, your assistance is not needed." A week or so later, we got our new champion revealed. Announced as a new officer in the Demacian army by recommendation of Jarvan, approved by the king after taking the oath before him. I don't recall clearly if the terms of her employment involved her mother getting sanctuary within Demacia and/or her saving Jarvan's life. Both I'm not clear on, but I know the events had her and her mother become Demacians within the city. LoR gave us a nice timeskip where she can have friendly banter with a garrison soldier(?) about her fire breath. Or with the lookout talking about giving the enemy a good fight. The Ruination is a massive event where Shyvana was forced to attack Poppy, Vayne and other soldiers in the area. I don't remember if they explored the aftermath with those overtaken by Veigo. As for her direction in the update, I agree that she should be bulky in human form but more lithe as a dragon. However, I have little expectation due to how some of my favorites became new characters altogether or sanded down to nearly generic. Might be a hit, but it might be a miss.

Demacia, Noxus and Ionia have all been announced as future shows like Piltover/Zaun in Arcane. I don't know if it will be 3 shows or one focused on Noxus and the wars against Demacia and Ionia, I've heard both options and I don't know which one is true. So yeah, Demacia as a new show is a good region ! (although, If it's focused on the mage rebellion, we already got that with the Lux' comics
She's got a fair amount of wasted potential in game look and lore. I'd have said huge wasted lore potential, but Mageseeker dragged the biggest potential chapters of most if not all the Demacian champions out behind a shed. So we won't get a high strung half dragon seeking to reaffirm her humanity only to careen into carefully conducted court intrigue by the person she's closest to. Nope, now Jarvan's got an open schedule and there is no more discrimination for the magical, and Demacia is a happy generic fantasy kingdom.

Current Shyvana's dragon form has a body of wendigo from Until Dawn. She looks so malnourished.

It wasn't Arcane that did that, he has been tied to like half the roster: he has directly created Warwick and Mundo and maybe even Orianna, and is indirectly responsible for the majority of Piltover/Zaun champions, has worked with Darius and Swain, and created chemical weapons to be used in the Noxus-Ionia war so he is also indirectly responsible for the majority of Ionian champions

- Singed never interacted with Mundo pre or post rework. Before, Mundo did those experimentation on himself to create the perfect assassin, post-rework it was under torture in that asylum he was confined after messing with a mob boss/Chem baron. Now Orianna only became related to him because of Arcane.
- Darius never met Singed, as the general was not involved in the invasion of Ionia, he was in Freljord in a suicide mission at the time.

My own point of criticism is that I wish the wings in the Dragon form were a lot more pronounced. If her dragon form is supposed to be Shyvana at her absolutely most powerful version of herself, and more importantly unrestrained, then her wings being folded up and hidden hinders that for me. All parts of her thar make her dangerous and powerful, to me, should be fully on display. And also larger wings in general. It’s admittedly a personal preference, but I like my dragons with giant wings. Larger and more pronounced wings could give some cool opportunities for added design features too.
But other than that I think this one Subjectively’s best, they did some incredible stuff with this one.
I'm gonna be honest, fucking get rid of this wyvern ass dragon body that Shyvana has, give me full wings on the back and 4 legs, this is a real dragon, this is more of a personal thing then actual criticism but man, I just very much prefer wings on the back and 4 limbs for true dragons, MH does this well since all the normal Monsters are wyverns and the only things called dragons are the Elder Dragons, that had this body plan of one pair of wings and two pairs of legs, it just feels right for a dragon, that's why I'll never fuck with LotR or GoT dragons, wyvern mfs looking ass

For reference, the things in the back of Stegosaurus are commonly called "dorsal plates" and they're enlarged scutes. The technical term is "osteoderm" (literally "skin bone") and these can have a huge variety of shapes and sizes (plates, armor, spikes, shells, etc).

If I wanted to play a wolf character, Warwick already exists. I pick Shyvana because I want a DRAGON. Wings, tail, jaws, claws, fire breath. I do not want a redesign with those features missing.

maybe an evolution mechanic like Khazix, but instead of it being bound to her R, it's bound to how many unique dragons she kills, with Elder drake evolving her R or something like that

Around 26:00 when you were talking about the diorama in the Song of Nunu bundle, I have the same one and it really is one of my favorite decorations in my room. I just sometimes can't help but smile from how cozy and heartwarming it makes me feel. It is so unfortunate what is happening to the people at Tequila Works. They put their heart and soul into that game and they deserve so SO much better than what they and other creatives are getting in the gaming industry right now.

I remember her Journal of Justice entry, it was during a time Jarvan went missing. Demacia in a uproar and suddenly he turns up at the gates with TWO hooded figures. To make things more confusing while Jarvan and his retinue return to the castle, Garen offers to escort(and great friends IIRC) but Jarvan stops him. "This is a royal matter, your assistance is not needed." A week or so later, we got our new champion revealed. Announced as a new officer in the Demacian army by recommendation of Jarvan, approved by the king after taking the oath before him. I don't recall clearly if the terms of her employment involved her mother getting sanctuary within Demacia and/or her saving Jarvan's life. Both I'm not clear on, but I know the events had her and her mother become Demacians within the city.
LoR gave us a nice timeskip where she can have friendly banter with a garrison soldier(?) about her fire breath. Or with the lookout talking about giving the enemy a good fight. The Ruination is a massive event where Shyvana was forced to attack Poppy, Vayne and other soldiers in the area. I don't remember if they explored the aftermath with those overtaken by Veigo.
As for her direction in the update, I agree that she should be bulky in human form but more lithe as a dragon. However, I have little expectation due to how some of my favorites became new characters altogether or sanded down to nearly generic. Might be a hit, but it might be a miss.

Demacia, Noxus and Ionia have all been announced as future shows like Piltover/Zaun in Arcane.
I don't know if it will be 3 shows or one focused on Noxus and the wars against Demacia and Ionia, I've heard both options and I don't know which one is true.
So yeah, Demacia as a new show is a good region ! (although, If it's focused on the mage rebellion, we already got that with the Lux' comics
She's got a fair amount of wasted potential in game look and lore. I'd have said huge wasted lore potential, but Mageseeker dragged the biggest potential chapters of most if not all the Demacian champions out behind a shed. So we won't get a high strung half dragon seeking to reaffirm her humanity only to careen into carefully conducted court intrigue by the person she's closest to. Nope, now Jarvan's got an open schedule and there is no more discrimination for the magical, and Demacia is a happy generic fantasy kingdom.

Slight Caveat at 33:00 for every Galio and Trundle rework turning a mediocre design into a whole new one that rocks we also got a Swain or Urgot, where the changes sanded all the edges off that appealed to people in the first place.
