My son is a junior high school student. He submitted a report on Maiko culture for summer vacation homework. He studied the history and the work of the maiko , went to the house where the maiko lives, interviewed the maiko and the mother of the maiko. Finally he did a maiko experience and completed a report of about 30 pages.And he won an award！
13才男の子、舞妓変身。夏休みの自由研究に京都花街文化（舞妓編）について書くことにした13歳男子。最後には自分自身も舞妓さんに！と変身をすることに…。花街の歴史や現状、舞妓さんやお茶屋・置屋の女将さんへのインタビューも行い、レポート用紙約30枚に。その年の夏休み自由研究の優秀作品に選ばれました。

I heard somewhere that the first geikos was men. :)
No. In the geisha community the male geisha have died out. The profession was started by men, but women made it more popular in the long run. Male geisha are called Taikomochi, and there are only 5 left in Japan. They do not dress in drag or try to pretend to be women. They have a specific dress code to follow.
By law men are not allowed in the geisha community, it is solely run by women every bar is owned by a woman, every shop etc. The only men who are allowed in are ones who have family ties to the community of geisha such as kimono dressers who have to be strong enough to tie the maiko obi and often help chaperone young maiko to events so they don't get lost.
