Hello everyone! Today I would like to show you a video of geisha style makeup. The base is made by applying Bintsukeabura, then Oshiroi dissolved in water is applied to the entire face and neck, and Konaoshiroi is covered on top of that.
Then, the artist applies Mebari to the face and neck, and shows you how it is done.
This time we used Tsuru-no-Maezashi for the wig.

It’s so interesting how they use pink as a mild contour to add dimension back to the face. Normally when we think of contour we think of brown, black, or grey tones. But this makes so much more sense for a white base with a youthful appearance! So interesting!

For Maiko, using pink makes their makeup look more cute, Geiko use a bit more red
I'm super pale with a pink undertone and never contour cause it looks weird on me, when I was 19 this Japanese lady told me to use a light pink and I've never looked back, I'm 42 now and still get so many compliments.
Fun fact: the white face paint used to be made with lead which would eventually give the wearer lead poisoning. In the 1930's the white lead paint was outlawed in Japan and the white paint was made using rice powder
I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THIS. I knew that led was used in white paint in Europe so I was curious
They actually used that historical fact in the anime: the apothecary diary
It was also mixed with bird droppings... So yeah makeup back then sucked lol

I used to love the scene from Memoirs of A Geisha when she was putting on the geisha makeup. It was so fascinating and soothing at the same time so I this is a really cool ASMR! Not my usual but definitely so enjoyable to watch!

Their makeup is all the same, but what’s usually different is how a Geiko does her makeup compared to an apprentice

I was surprised when she whipped out the blender pad. It's basically a beauty blender but in powder pad form.
It's a powder puff she was using white powder to set the face, you can see her dip it into the powder

While watchign her paint her face I got a little confused on why the bottom of her ears were painted until she put the hair on and the top park being covered. That's such a cool illusion to do, I love learning new things every day
