- DJ SCRATCH SESSION on Technics 1200 mk7 ★ DJ Shortee Technics Scratch Showcase at Astro AVL // I’m scratching on Technics 1200 mk7 turntables and a Rane 72 DJ mixer at a showcase I did for Technics at Astro AVL. I’m improvising this DJ scratch session on Technics using just ONE sample: my favorite super-long-n-crsipy “AHHH” from “Bikini Wax” record.
I love the creative exercise of sticking to ONE SAMPLE and figuring out tons of different ways I can flip it.
It forces you to think outside the box of what you already know, so that you can discover new nuggets-of-scratch-gold. (Rather than just moving on to another sound when you think you’ve run out of techniques ;0)

Ive never seen such amazing skills being used so perfectly. Maybe im starting learning this too late, but how long did it take to that kind of level? Id be happy with 1% of that skill level!
Thanks so much for the love! I'm so happy you dig the scratching :) I've been scratching since 1995 but it's not about when I started - it's how much work I actually put into the craft over those years and also how the craft has developed over time (not all the scratches were created when I started and new cuts are still being invented every day!)
So - It's NEVER too late to start -- it just takes consistent practice, repetition and dedication. I have students who just started scratching a year or so ago and they are light years ahead of where I was 2 years into my journey.
UA-cam is a great resource for scratch tutorials, but If you can take actual lessons or a class that should help you immensely too. Just make sure the DJ you're learning from is also a good teacher who has experience teaching and can break things down step by step and capitalize on your individual strengths while helping you overcome your weaknesses.
A good coach can help speed up the process and connect the dots for you much faster as well, so you know exactly what to do and how to practice. Otherwise you can waste time developing bad habits or doing things incorrectly. Thanks so much for the hydroplane love! ❤ When I do it continuously with two hands I call it "The Purr" because it sounds like my cats purring 😹 And yes - the dry hand struggle is real! Sometimes my hands are too dry to do it too. So instead of licking them, I rub my hands together really fast to create heat/moisture and that helps! It also depends on the record you're using. It's a lot easier when I use real vinyl recs with the audio on the actual record - the gooves are deeper, -- rather than control vinyl where the grooves are cut thin and they're all uniform making the record more slippery. Same goes for jog wheels - the more slippery/less texture, the harder it is to get a grip. (You can also use 'Sort Quik' moistener - it's what ppl use to pick up paper easier - but that leaves a residue on your hands/vinyl so I don't like using that.) Hope that helps! xx
