This is sick. I started getting really into 90s atmospheric dnb, jungle, jazzy stuff, ridge Racer type 4 soundtrack is the same vibe, at one point I'd have that on every day when I went out for a drive, helps take my mind of things.
Will there ever be another game like R4? Man, I hope so. Everything about it was top tier. Timeless! The storylines, for a quick 8 race GP, actually carried some weight to them. The driving was great and most cars/manufacturers felt pretty distinct even despite being extremely similar. The track layouts must have been built around exactly the way the cars drove, because it never felt like you had the wrong car; you just had to figure out how to drive that car to its max. It's a different driving model than all other RR games and I love it for that. The music. Beautiful. The graphics were stunning for their time. And as this video indicates, they look great with just a simple resolution bump. Look at the lighting, the design, the art direction. I mean, heck there's even faux reflections and the cars shimmer in the right light. Everything the game did, it did to perfection. And it was technically sound too. I don't recall ever running into a glitch or freeze in the decades I've played the game.
So much of Ridge Racer was influenced by euro artists of the time. Shinji Hosoe and Gabber. Ayako Saso and The Prodigy. R4 here was definitely a love letter to Shogun's work.
Yup that Sugizo, the one and only. He made some Drum and Bass records in the 90s however only 2 of his songs remixed by (Artemis/Shogun - real name Oliver Lomax) are featured here. Artemis also remixed a track for Ken Ishii (techno guy). It's awesome to see such talented artists work together. Nobody really knows where Artemis/Shogun is today... but maybe he is just chilling in Japan and working with artists under a different name... I don't know but I'm glad he left us with this music. EDIT: I just want to reiterate that Shogun is Oliver Lomax from the UK and Sugizo is Yūne Sugihara from Japan they are two different people. Sugizo shows up in the credits here since Oliver remixed his song.
This mix has been getting me through the daily grind for almost a year now, Much love. I appreciate the R4 footage too, its like the nostalgic cherry on top :)
This track is actually Artemis - Sea Farer, if you were wondering! I read somewhere that Michiel van den Bos got lots of inspiration from guys like Shogun/Artemis for the UT soundtrack though, so I get where you're coming from with that guess :)

This is music! Simple as that. Music today is for the most part not even music, it’s a sad state of affair.

This is what a music can make in a simple game! I will play that!
The music is credited by Sugizo, is the same Sugizo as in the visual kei artist? Never knew this side of his career.
