Gotta love that Cummins dealer. "Hey we installed your new $4000 turbo. Then we noticed that the entire engine is junk. Will that be check or credit card?"
That wrecker attachment sounds like an awesome build! Can't wait to see that! So, they put a turbo on and THEN tell you the engine is junk... that seems a little out of order! Well, I'm looking forward to your new projects! Thanks for the video!
Detroit almost sounds like a wrist pin/rod or a piston skirt, sounds like it's coming from below the cyl head from what i can tell from the video audio. I'd pull the oil pan and bar engine over 1st and inspect really well.
When you said that the dealer replaced the turbo and then determined that there were other issues I really looked at the turbo and wondered if they truly replaced it...still not sure. Some things should’ve been noticed before the turbo was replaced. Wrecker booms... I don’t think that one was really stout enough. Booms are great to have thou. I used one on a single axle...wish I had that boom and it had a crank wench...WHEW! Keep us posted. Really, I think you do some good stuff!😳
I like the wrecker bed you had better than that one,but it got the job done ! Good to hear from you again! The audio cuts out on the Cummins can't tell what noise it is making. Thanks for making the video!
Fantastic video JC, kudos for the disclaimers and the safety narrative. 5 stars buddy. Going forward, I agree with your thoughts about modifications, the obvious design flaws, and the reasons you would not recommend this setup. As always a quality video with excellent commentary, and the reasoning for your thoughts. Much respect for your safety concerns, 5 stars my friend. All the best to you and Mrs. JC from here, hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving with your family! Work safe, keep warm, have fun, talk again soon. Doug@ the "ranch"
after using this one, i can honestly say that i think i can build something better and safer. it wasnt easy to hook up either. geometry just didnt work for me. i also would prefer it to be electric over hydraulic....it would e so much easier to get hooked up just right without having to get in and out of the truck time after time to supply air, shut off air, evacuate bags, adjust, back in the truck, apply air, and so on......
Yeah, if you were to get into that one, it would take about ten minutes before you'd conclude you should have started from scratch. Just fixing the design flaws is going to be more time consuming than starting with new material.
The youtube safety police will be by to get you soon 😀I moved 3 semi trucks about 5 or 6 miles with a t4.105 new holland tractor and a heavy boom pole on the back. I don't think any of them had rear tires on them and it was about all the tractor would pick up. It was kinda like the setup you have their, good for a few miles but not so much long distance, but It got the job done, really needed about a 6 series tractor though lol

"Those who can....do. those who cant....hate on those who can". it worked just fine. i didnt show hooking it up so i could avoid the ridicule from people who are afraid of everything and should probably live in a bubble. like you, i am aware of the risk and take appropriate measures to avoid issues.
I would definitely say from what I can hear of it due to the woofing it definitely needs an overhead ran. Beyond that I would speculate possible bull gear. Get your ear down low on the front cover and see how the noise emmits. I wouldn't say to much in the bottom end due to the oil pressure although if I saw correctly it does have a minimal amount of blowby. If you have an injector issue which I doubt on a 12.7. A 14.0 seemed to always have injector issues, but a simple heat test would determine that.
I had to smile when you said that Ken Worth had almost a million miles on it. Here I am thinking my Jeep I bought with 229,000 is a lot of miles. But I know those diesels go forever. It's a pretty color.
Hi JC. Have a look at a video by Gordon Robertson Called “Detroit 60 In frame rebuild “. He had two part pistons and one came apart but there was loads of blow by with his. I am not a mechanic at all but hope this may give you an idea. I hope it turns out to be a cheap fix. Keep making the videos, they are really interesting and well put together. Best regards Simon.
I agree with you; that setup is an interesting concept, but I don't think it's safe. The way that pivot point at the tow plate is supported by those pieces of flat stock scares me. Tow trucks use 3x3 or 4x4 square tubing for those standoff arms. Also that unit places most of the weight on the rear of the frame; it looks to me like it would, if anything, lift up on the fifth wheel, which isn't how it should work. You can definitely build a better one.
he copied this from one that was "manufactured". it has some design flaws but it did tow two different trucks without any problems. i have decided to build my own. i know what i like and dont like about this one. that will make it easier to build a safer and stronger version.
The 60 sounds like it has a compression boom going past a valve, probably an intake & the engine has a twitch to it. If it was a piston or pin it would vary with load & it didn't seem to in the video. Track down the boom, it's either in the intake manifold or after the turbo & go from there. My guess is a valve spring. Do you want to tell us what you paid for it?
@@j.c.smithprojects See if you can locate it with an open hose stethoscope before you open it up & drop the exhaust at the V band & have a listen there. Sure sounds like a compression boom to me!
KW.... Either valve issue or injectors... recommend to START with rebuild the head. Do an oil change and if any metal in the pan best to just do a complete proper inframe on it. Intl... I say do an engine swap and replace that air-to-air as a precaution and and check and if needed replacing those turbo tubes.
i have decided to build my own version....only i want it to be electric over hydraulic. i want to be able to use it on any truck.....not only with air brake trucks.
@@j.c.smithprojects that makes sense to build it yourself and electric would be easy to repair over hydraulic and or air because the machine needs to work with them 2 systems to work over electric not hard to hook up I agree with you JC best of luck with the fabrication bro
The Engine problem - try installing new plugs, sparkplug wires, distributor cap, rotor and a condenser. Wristpin or a single piston. My first guess is that there will be metal in the pan. I look forward to your diagnosis videos.
That wrecker is sceatchy, you interested in a Zack lift? Sounds like either a bad injector or bull gears worn. Change that ignition cylinder so whoever has that key doesn't aquire your in the middle of the night
I like the idea of having a removable wrecker attachment but it doesn't have the best engineering and structural support as you pointed out. If you make one I know it will be safe for anything you need to tow. Edit: later in the video that truck sounded almost like a rod knock? Definitely something that knocks consistantly with rpms.
i am "reworking" some of the flaws in this one right now. i have trucks to tow and cant take the time to build a new one from scratch right now. i am videoing the changes if you are interested.
Hard to tell without being there but... if it’s not skipping that rules out an broken injector spring or a broken injector rocker arm, I’ve seen a missing valve adjuster button missing cause the same kind of noise.... if not then possibly a spun bearing
You asked... It's a rod knocking. Treadle valve, if you have to take it out to work on it, put a new one in... Although, it might only be in need of some lube.. the ones I've had apart had plastic pushrod, but if it got gummed up in the piston itself, still an easy fix... That tow boom, idea is right, design needs a little help...
Bearings worn out? Cracked sleeve [check the look of the oil from the pan when you change the oil]. Not a cam but the Cam could probably use a polish by now [any or all]. Could no doubt use an in frame but a motor rebuild would essentially give you a lot less grief.
I have little no no use for 5th wheel tow bar setups mostly because like the one you are using they don’t fit the truck and even when they do fit the truck pare subject to coming loose as you go down the road but everyone has their own level of comfort doing such things. If you are towing trucks on a semi regular basis have you considered looking for an old Holmes 600/650 wrecker setups or possibly investing in a electric over hydraulic wheel lift/under reach. Personally the wheel lift/under reach is my preference because so many trucks are not supposed to be towed with chains and a tow bar any more and I definitely don’t like air bag being used to The engine noise sounds like a wrist pin/piston. Myself I think I would check the engine for codes just for giggles and then let the engine rest on flat ground and drain a gallon of oil and see what is or isn’t in the oil to possibly lend more clues to the problem. I also would be inclined to do the old long extension and listen trick to try and confirm where the noise is coming from because I have heard water pumps and bull-gears make noises that sounded somewhat like that. Next I would remove the valve cover and give things a good look over again and if everything looked good then I think it would be time to suck it up and drop the pan and start my investigation there. Some might say to pull the injectors and use a bore scope to look down in the cylinders personally I find it somewhat hard to tell a lot most time unless something is really broke. O well good luck
That's the strangest 5th wheel wrecker boom I have ever seen. I had the same problem with the brake peddle on an International dump truck. PB BLASTER in the rubber cup. Never could get the company mechanic to fix it. Finally refused to drive it. It had dancing headlites as well.
It's not bull gears as it would sound like metal on metal in the upper front part of engine. Would run fine yes but would but here nose like that threw the intake. Agree with others on something valve seating or similar but have to start with the basics

I do watch your videos. have for a long time. i am not convinced its a rod....it holds oil pressure and my experience is that when a bearing is bad enough to make that much noise.....it has so much slop that it lets all the oil spill at that point and the pressure is very low or nonexistent. i guess we will see when we tear it down.

I would not tow a pickup with that thing !
Well he just pulled 2 semis with it. He had to use what he had. He got the trucks where they needed to go.
it pulled both trucks without issue. however, i believe i can make something better , stronger and safer.
