As you do more, hopefully you will start to see the benefits of cleaning the parts before assembly. But good on you for having a go. Only way to learn. When changing gearing the front sprocket has way more influence over ratio than rear and if you don’t want to run out of chain, whatever you add to rear, take off front. Also, too tight a chain can damage output shaft bearings.
It's been 3 years, so I'm sure you know this by now, but I'm writing this for others watching. You need 1 1/2 - 2" of play in the chain per the manual. This is VERY important, as a chain that is too tight can do all kinds of damage to a lot of parts: countershaft, seals, bearing, gear box... you name it. If you hit a bump with a chain that is too tight, it can easily trash your seal and countershaft. I know this for a fact, because a guy I go riding with over tightened his chain and trashed the countershaft oil seal, and probably the bearing as well. When we loaded up his bike, we saw that it was dripping oil from the crankcase cover. He has money, so he just took it to the shop and let them fix it, for how much I don't know, but he did tell me that they said it was damaged by the chain being too tight. He was lucky it was only a seal or bearing, because it can do a lot more damage. So, be careful and do not over tighten your chain, it really can do a lot of damage.
