We need more tradesmen to take in young people to do apprenticeship jobs. Very important for the youth today to see the real work people are doing. Good to inform people about this type of work and how important it is.
I totally agree. On the flip side of that...older people should not be denied apprenticeships. I'm a 51 year old woodworker that is completely self taught. I tried getting into an apprenticeship here in Nova Scotia...I was told I'm too old! So I'll prove them wrong and learn without them
Not only that, but there's a big difference between googling things and doing them. If artisans don't teach younger people and take on apprentices, in 40 years there won't be anyone who knows how to do this properly.
Apprentice farrier jobs are like hen’s teeth. To become a farrier through the Royal Company of Farriers (which farriers have to qualify to practise) is extremely difficult as the number of apprenticeships has dropped dramatically to the degree that farriers can’t afford to take an apprentice on.
Aww, the pride and pleasure on Tom's face when Sam is talking about him and what a hardworking and committed lad he is. Such genuine respect and affection between them is lovely to see. There was a time when most teenagers went into apprenticeships instead of university, and part of a good apprenticeship was always the working relationship between older and younger people. So much more was learned about life than the work itself and I've met a few apprentices lately who love their jobs. They're learning and getting paid, and the friendly banter and laughter between them and their mentors was great to hear. I hope that more younger people are fortunate enough to get good apprenticeships like Tom's.🤞

I knew you'd run a marathon with your mates and belonged to a gym, but watching the strenuous routine so early in the morning was eye-opening. Especially working off the stiffness of the days before. So impressed. Love Hessel and have seen you work on him before. What a lovely horse! You seem comfortable sharing with us as well. I'm impressed even more. Thanks!
First and foremost, I never intended to spend 41 minutes watching a video even if it’s you with your gorgeous smile and sweet voice but was so fascinated and learned so much listening to your commentary. I’ve never had horses but am an animal lover and clearly you are as well. You speak their language and they know your intentions and I find your relationship with these beautiful horses just as endearing as you are with your audience. Thank you for sharing. I’m a fan!
Hello, here in the great state of South Carolina USA. I came up on your channel just a day or two ago and have been watching many of your posts. Very impressed with your skills, especially impressed that all of the horses so far that I have seen you do seem to like you and that says a lot. Horses know whether you respect and like them and often that really pays off especially with new clients that may not have had the best farriers along the way. I help a lot of rescues here in the states as well as the World Horse Rescue in UK and Europe. So many rescues have terrible hoof problems and also may have had terrible people messing with their feet. If all farriers were to approach the animals the way you do, there wouldn't be any horses terrified of the farrier. In the US rescues always have numbers of Belgians that the Amish communities have had working for years and some have never had the proper hoof care. So when the rescues get them, it is really quite hard to find farriers that will work on them as their feet are a true mess, and on top of that they have been mistreated in many instances. We need to clone you Sam and send those clones to help our rescues give the last years of life for these overworked mistreated Belgians a pleasant time. I am going to tell some of the rescues that I donate to to start watching your work, and perhaps they can pass along suggestion to their farriers in a nice way so as not to tic them off as after all it is darn hard to get farriers to these rescues at all! I particularly liked your education on how to remove shoes without damaging the hoof itself or as you say the tendons as well. I do give credit to the rescues that are saving the big drafts from slaughter horrors, they try to get heavy duty stocks as soon as possible through donations so that the farriers that DO accept the work will be less likely to get injured working with horses that have been mistreated in their hoof care. The staff work very hard to do training as best they can to get the big drafts familiar with the stocks so they won't be terrified or have to be so heavily sedated that they are in danger of going down in the stocks. Love it that you young helper Tom is interested and learning all he can from you, there can never be enough truly good farriers who also have a connection to the horses.
Please Google ARM located in Miami Florida to see the horror of a horse Funny Biz, illegally slaughtered for meat. He was a racehorse descended from Secretariat. ARM is fighting against the horror of slaughtering our US horses for illegal meat trade. I am shocked at the Amish for their neglect.
@@Jakmak1480. I have lived in Central Pennsylvania for over 50 years and unfortunately this is true There we’re no less than 6 big animal rescues this past spring and summer most from Amish farms They also include the notorious “puppy mills” We get a steady stream of illicit traffic from NY and NJ to transport these poor things that are then sold for thousands of dollars

Am just loving watching the horses and ponies being shod takes me back to my early teens, over 60 years ago now, when we used to go to our nearby stables to help catch them in the fields ride them bareback to the stables, good brushing, whilst they ate, manes, and clean hooves. I remember being told to hold a twitcher on one of the ponies whilst the on hand owner shod the pony, I cried, 😢. Watching you with your respect towards each one of these beauties is so calming, such a difference to that awful memory I remember. 🙂

You’ve put your self-described OCD tendencies to excellent use! Love your explanations -personally zed for each horse. They have no idea how lucky they are.
I very much enjoy watching the horses and how well you keep them in check while doing your job. We lost our last one, a Thoroughbred, a few years back, he was 34 when he passed. Our family emigrated from North Riding Yorkshire to the United States over 135 years ago settling in Oregon. I always enjoy seeing videos produced by families from Yorkshire, wonderful commitment to their jobs and working with animals.
Oh boy, already fast approaching the goal! 100,000. I bet you go over that by the end of 2024. Those little Shetland ponies and their tiny little hooves are so cute! I KNOW they can be little brats, my sister and I had one as little girls. It’s a wonder we both lived through the experience! I could tell you stories…. But we loved him. My only question so far is how many times a day do you accidentally burn yourself on those flaming hot horse shoes? I’d have burns all over me. So nice to see so many horses that are well taken care of. Have a wonderful week and take care!
Thanks! I'm from a family of great welders and farriers...Enjoy your great work ethics and especially your tender ways with all...thank you for sharing your self. JANYCE

Really great and informative video, thank you Sam. It really helps to understand more about our horses feet. What a legend Tom is, turning up every Saturday, well done Tom. Really looking forward to your next video Sam.

Very KOOL... love watching this... this job > NO joke... EMPRESSIVE. YOU all work Extremely Hard. WOW. The horse get you -- its like pampering them & they understand. Nice❤
My Dad shod our show jumping horses back in the late 60 -1970s here in New Zealand, admire your horse manship, love your accents, hear it quite oft3n here in NZ, love your channel
This is actually very informative - for an American that lives in a major city, I have zero horse experience.
thanks for watching😊
Sam, you and Tom are a good team. Sam, you were so kind and gentle with the Shetland foals and their mommies.😊❤💪
JANYCE
To say I am absolutely fascinated watching these videos is an understatement, this is such an unusual trade to do that involves such a wide range skill sets, so educational, pls make more videos, I'm running out 😂 nearly watched everyone, beautiful horses, I am mesmerised
This’ so insightful, educational, and soothing to watch after a long day. Thank you for all the care you put into these magnificent horses!
Thanks Sam for the videos and letting us see what farrier´s job is about. I Admire your craftsmanship and the way you handle your four legged "customers", with respect. I wish you all the best in life.
I absolutely love your accent. I'm not a native English speaker and had a hard time understanding you at the beginning but now I got the hang of it and I absolutely love it. ❤

Really great and informative video, thank you Sam. It really helps to understand more about our horses feet. What a legend Tom is, turning up every Saturday, well done Tom. Really looking forward to your next video Sam.
Awesome videos to learn from. I've always wanted to be a farrier, but never had the time. I'm retired military. So, now that I'm retired and came across your fantastic videos, this desire has now been resurrected. Absolutely love your videis. Very educational. Keep them coming !!
You look like a down to earth guy that works hard! Wish more were like you. You are a real man, not a snowflake!
What a great story about how you met Tom! I'm sure your encouragement of him publicly does wonders for his confidence and your friendship. I'll bet the horses can feel how close you guys are! Sam, you're a wonderful person with a big heart! The houses certainly love you!!! I'm new to your channel and can't stop watching the great job you do!!!❤️❤️❤️💯💯💯
