The New Polestar 3 Is Polestar's First Real Flagship

  • The 3 isn't just Polestar’s latest EV, it's arguably the most important product in the brand’s short history. The 3 is Polestar's first SUV, their new flagship, the most expensive model they will sell for a while, it has the longest range, fastest charging, and it's the first Polestar that was designed from the start to be a Polestar. It's also the model designed to take on Porsche. Yep, that’s what they say.
    Sadly I can't talk about how it drives until June... but we can talk about almost everything else. So how on earth can it compete with Porsche? On paper things look pretty solid. The Macan EV is a bit smaller on the inside/outside, but the two are pretty close. Also similar in size: the Cadillac Lyriq, Mercedes EQE SUV, Acura ZDX, BMW iX, and Audi Q8 e-tron. The 3 looks a bit more like a shooting brake/wagon than the Macan, but looks can be deceiving because the interior is surprisingly roomy and it has the most clearance in this segment 8.3 inches (more in line with a Rivian R1S) and pump the standard air suspension up and you'll get 9.8 inches. That's electric G-Wagon matching.
    How about power? 489 HP is standard, 517 is optional, and the rumor mill says this is just the start. Will it ever get the 884 HP system from the upcoming 5? Probably not, but expect Polestar to crank the up dial in the future. 0-60? Base model to base model, the Polestar is faster than all the competition (by a hair in some cases) save the iX.
    I can’t talk driving dynamics, but I can help you connect the dots: The model we were drove had 265mm wide 22 inch tires up front, 295 in the back, and massive Brembo brakes.
    Curb weight is ~300 lbs higher than the Porsche (which makes sense given the extra size and the battery that's 11% larger), but lower than the Audi, Mercedes, Acura, or Cadillac. BMW? It’s about the same… But Polestar has a trick up their sleeve: a mechanical torque vectoring rear axle that’s unique in the industry. In this segment, the only model with “real” torque vectoring is the SQ8, but it’s quite different. Audi uses twin 185 HP motors in the back, Polestar uses a single 272 HP motor with a twin-clutch torque vectoring / limited slip rear differential. This means that while the Audi can apply more power to the rear in a straight line, the Polestar can apply more yaw as it can direct 100% of the rear motor output to a single rear wheel. Think that doesn’t happen often? Think again. It’s pretty common for gas cars with torque vectoring axles to have aggressive 90/10 power splits from side to side on a winding road.
    315 miles of range is below the max range Macan for now, but Polestar says a longer range single motor model is coming soon. Want the higher horsepower model? Range drops by 30-40 miles depending on your driving style. The long range is thanks to a 111 kWh battery that supports a 250 kW charge rate so DC charge times are on par with Tesla’s Model X.
    How’s the interior? Most of the parts feel snazzier than the Audi, but Porsche’s switchgear and plastic trim parts feel more premium. The Mercedes and BMW are a hair nicer in some areas, but keep in mind that the Polestar is significantly less expensive than the Germans when comparably equipped. Vs the Acura and Cadillac the Polestar is solidly nicer inside. The infotainment software is more responsive than any of the German competitors, logically laid out and it’ll support CarPlay shortly after it goes on sale. The entire vehicle is OTA updatable.
    We’ve been dancing around the price tag. $73,400 is where the 3 will start, that’s much, much lower than the iX and a solid discount vs the Audi and Mercedes. Porsche? The Macan starts a bit higher at $78,800 but it’s slower and smaller and options get really, really expensive. How spendy? Over $60,000 more than the 3 if you want a fully-loaded Macan Turbo EV. Yep, it’ll be faster and snazzier inside, but it’ll also cost you 60% more.
    So what do you think? Is Polestar going in the right direction? The 3 is a significant step forward vs the 2 in refinement, features, range, etc. and well positioned vs the competition when you account for the pricing. Is that enough? What would you consider the closest competitor?

    I have seen one in person a couple of times at the Polestar studio at Scottsdale Fashion Square, and even sat in it, and it's drop dead gorgeous. Interestingly, both times I was there no one was looking at it, but the examples of the 2 were getting a lot of attention. Likely a matter of the 2 being available now, and with what seemed like very reasonable lease rates.

    A lot of folks saying it’s overpriced, but I don’t know - if it drives well, seems like it could be the modern take on the Jaguar I-PACE, and that thing is phenomenal!
    We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced our 970 Panamera Turbo (both of which we bought used btw), a car that most ICE fans would probably agree is a pretty good daily driver in its own right. And I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the Panamera one bit, neither does the wife. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), the use of space is excellent (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, naturally perfect weight distribution, being able to blow by anyone in traffic anytime, never being in the wrong gear, way more efficient, never being late because I had to stop for gas, no maintenance, quicker than most v8 family cars and more efficient than i-4 family cars, etc etc. And even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. Yes, it can be annoying on road trips - but it's not the end of the world unless you road trip all the time. It's the better car 364 days of the year, and the worse car 1 day of the year.
    Having said all of that, like I said I'm an enthusiast, and we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an R56 Mini Cooper JCW, both of which I frequently use for road rallys and autocross), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, lightweight, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great and smoke my c7 around any racetrack, but I have no interest at all, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself ever going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever going EV for sports cars.
    My point is simple: EVs are better at some things, and gas cars are better at some things. "Taking a side" doesn't make sense, even for enthusiasts. Just acknowledge what the other is better at. EVs dont work for everyone (you need a place to charge and can't road trip all the time etc etc), but if it works in your lifestyle - try it before you knock it is all I'm saying. You might be surprised.
    And like I said - just because a car is EV doesn't make it good. There are good EVs and bad ones, just like gas cars. For example, I' not a huge Tesla fan. But, the well-executed EVs are, in my opinion, the best daily drivers, if they fit into your lifestyle.
    ...and this is coming from someone that's 37 years old and currently on his 8th manual transmission sports car (Vette, Mini JCW, 350Z, etc etc). And to be clear - these are my favorite cars, not the I-PACE. But, I have a wife and a kid, and we need something that isn't manual and has a back seat. And in that category, the Jag is by far and away the best we've had.

      They could lower the price significantly by making the following things standard: all-metal roof; 18-inch wheels; standard steel suspension; base sound system. Make a glass roof, larger wheels, air suspension, and higher-end sound systems all optional ... they add weight, reduce range, and jack the price up unnecessarily in the extreme. If they'd do this when they start making it in Charleston, SC, they could let their buyers get the $7500 federal tax credit -- which would make the car somewhat reasonable in price.

    The mechanic torque vectoring unit is not that advantageous. Their are very few, if any, circumstances an owner would need all 500+ hp and torque to be sent to just one wheel rear wheel. That is why using two motors is not really a big deal. Furthermore electric motors don't just have a on or off state when torque vectoring. They can spin to different RPM ranges independently of each other where they can produce different hp/torque based on software.
    Edit: Like Alex replied below it would only be 272hp per rear wheel max in this car. But in some new vehicles, they have extremely high HP single motors and it seems like having that much power sent to one wheel would never be useful unless on a higher speed track

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  15 днів тому +2

      You need to re-watch the video I think. It’s not 500Hp to a single wheel, it’d be 272. I don’t say that the way torque vectoring works is by turning off a motor, I say that the most you can do in a twin motor system is turn off one motor which is true. You’d be surprised how often a single rear motor in an Audi with twin motor vectoring in the rear is below 10% output. To get much yaw in an AWD EV you actually do need to drive the outside wheel fairly hard.

    • @ayushmalpeddi2793
      @ayushmalpeddi2793 15 днів тому

      @@AAutoBuyersGuide @AAutoBuyersGuide Yup I must have missed that. 272hp at 1 wheel can definitely be taken advantage off during hard driving. But in a twin motor setup, why is the most you can is turn a motor off? Through software a company can limit output of the motor as well. For example a Model S Plaid does not give full power in a straight line until 70mph or so. Similarly when going around a left corner for example, Tesla can give the right wheel full power, but then limit the inner wheel to 1/4 power output to overdrive the outside wheels and make the turn in sharper. Tesla doesn't only have the option to turn on and off a motor. They can also limit output to whatever number they want given certain inputs. Kinda like the Ioniq 5 N with all of its fancy software tricks. Motors don't just have an on full power or off no power state.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  14 днів тому +1

      Again, I’m not saying that motors can’t vary their output. Yes, motors can go 0-100% and anywhere between, however using the SQ8 as an example, the reason the rear motors are quite large (185 HP per wheel) is *because* in sport mode the car is very aggressive at the torque/power split with the inner motor frequently below 10% output as that’s how you get the yaw motion. If you gave one wheel 100% and the other wheel’s motor 50%, yes you’d have a yaw moment, but not a very large one since that’s closer to the power split in a traditional open differential anyway when cornering on a tight road.

      This is not a simple thing to answer. Air suspensions are more reliable than you think, it’s pretty normal for them to not need any service at all for 100,000 miles. When they do, they can get expensive however. On the other hand: oddly enough air suspensions also exist because customers want them. The option is very, very popular on nearly every vehicle that offers it. From the RAM trucks to Jeeps, to EVs and other non EV luxury cars, customers talk with their wallets and their wallets seem to say they don’t care about the long term implications.
