What REALLY Happened to Almost Famous?

- For directors like Cameron Crowe, being uncool is a trademark. Unfortunately for him, he is VERY cool a result. Crowe has made classic features like Jerry Maguire, and Say Anything as-well-as more obscure projects like Vanilla Sky. But one thing cannot be debated, his semi-autobiographical film Almost Famous is far and away one of the most beloved movies of his career. The movie stars Kate Hudson, Billy Cruddup, Patrick Fugit, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Lee, Frances McDormand, Zooey Deschanel, Anna Paquin, and even Jimmy Fallon as characters based on real people that Crowe and worked with during his time as a magazine journalist in California's 70s rock n' roll era. It's a wild film- but REALLY happened in this story?

Not one single bad performance in this film.. one of the best films ever made and mandatory viewing for anyone who is either a Musician or movie maker
"I have to go home." You ARE home." I love that entire Elton John singalong on the bus. Shame that Kate Hudson didn't win the Oscar that year, her performance was sublime, but she's mostly stuck to romantic comedies since.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was fantastic as Lester Bangs. RIP to both legends.
This movie is so severely underrated!! Amazing cast, amazing story, and direction. You feel like you’re on the road with an actual band!! It never gets old and deserved to win more Oscar’s than it did.
Are you high? This movie is literally the opposite of underrated. Find another word.
@@Labyrinth1010 Not underrated at all, but definitely not as well known today as it should be. There have been quite a few times when I've mentioned it, only to hear "What's that? Never heard of it."
@@Labyrinth1010 Ageed, the all to common comment, proclaiming something underrated is overdone and ill defined.
"It's okay. I know I'm easy to forget, just leave me behind. I'M ONLY THE F*CKING LEAD SINGER!!! HEEEEYY!!!"😂
Almost Famous is a great movie. Billy Crudup is one of my favorites, very underrated actor.
Thank God that Brad Pitt dropped out. I like Pitt just fine, but Crudup was perfect in Almost Famous, as he has been in several things, such as Without Limits and season 1 of The Morning Show (before the writers cut his character's balls off in season 2). In fact, he has been really good in every role that I've seen him play. As you said, a very underrated actor.
@@patrickmorgan4006 Check out Jesus' Son
Yeah--it's hard to believe he is the same guy who played the spy in "The Good Shepard."
Check out Jesus' Son if you haven't.
@@deadbeats4894 I saw that back when it came out in the late 90s. Crudup seems to have been the go-to guy for 70s based movies back then with Jesus' Son, Without Limits, and Almost Famous within just a couple of years of each other.
A magical film with acceptional intelligent, charm, wit and heart. A joful experience! You can't help but fall in love with all the characters. There are no flaws in this movie. Crowe's talent and versatility are extraordinary. If you havent' seen it already, you're going to love it!
Without a doubt one of the greatest movies of all time
Yes❤
Such a phenomenal film it actually hurts a little
"The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you're uncool."
One of my all-time favorite flicks.
They just don't make movies like this anymore. I've seen it 100 times and it's just so amazing. The way it makes you think it's about the fun and glitz of traveling with the band and then you realize that all along it was about something else and it just punches you in the gut. To me, this was the plane scene with Penny and William. What a gem.
I didn't know any of this background. You make me want to watch the movie again. How cool has Cameron Crowe's life been? He was a rock 'n road warrior with famous bands at age 16, several successful moves and an academy award, and married to the gorgeous rock goddess Nancy Wilson of Heart....what a journey.
Philip Seymour Hoffman gave one of the best performances of his career as Lester Bangs, though sadly, both men would die of drug overdoses.
You meant to say has.
I loved almost famous and Hoffman but I don't think it was his best performance. I think he did great in the role but there's so many other roles that had more depth and had to work with of his.
Now where was I recently reminded me of that irony? Oh yeah, 2:09

PSH never gave a bad performance. Every performance was a master class.
Its all about the Tiny Dancer/ Bus scene.
I Recorded This Film From a PPV-Rental Back In TheDay.
I Watched That VHS Recording Over a Hundred Times!
just so you know lester bangs is a legend of music journalism, kinda glossed over that
7:45 that event also inspired Ace to write the song Shock Me, which was his lead vocal debut
“I’m on the f$&@#% lead singer!” gets me every time 😂
I love this movie! ❤
One of the best movies ever made!!
Thanks for the tribute dude👏👏👏
I own a copy of this movie and a copy of its soundtrack. Great music for an underrated movie.
Such a great movie - thank you for the deep dive!
Might be my favourite film. No movie feels like Almost Famous.
It's all Happening!
Best soundtrack of all time.
One of my favorite movies! Great video! ❤🤘
Still absolutely love this movie feel the bootleg cut adds so much. Billy Crudup music should also be mentioned for the massively underrated Rudderless.
I'm so glad Billy Crudup played Russell instead of Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt is too famous to be believable in that role.
Pitt isn't as good an actor as Crudup. Pitt won an Oscar for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but that movie was a dumpster fire.
If Pitt played the role, every time he was onscreen you would be thinking "There's Brad Pitt." Whenever you see Crudup on the screen in this movie, you think "There's Russell Hammond." And it's the same for Crudup in every role he plays. You see the character, not the actor.
Crowe made the right call replacing him with Crudup. Crudup has some "extra gears" that Pitt just does not have. Pitt is a good actor, but he would not have been as believable as Crudup was. He gave that character a real vulnerability that I don't think Pitt could have pulled off.
Whenever my beloved and I are getting ready for a show, we always have this DVD playing in the background.
One of my favorite movies. I've watched it over 50 times and I saw it in the theaters when it came out.
”I AM A GOLDEN GOD!!!!” - splosh !!!!
Great flick !
One of my favorite movies. Watching it is one of those wonderful experiences that never gets old. Crowe is a movie-making genius. He and Lawrence Kasdan made/make my kind of movies.
outstanding video! i learned new stuff about this epic movie. thanks team!!!!
in my top 10 movie favorites of all time. Thanks for this.
I am a "band-aid" for this movie! I love this movie so much with the song "tiny dancer" just made the movie better!❤❤
Movies had heart...which current movies sadly lack
The part that hits form me was he’s walking with Lester when they first meet and ask about he’s status in High School and I quote don’t worry about it you’ll meet all again to long journey to the middle. I love that part bc so true.
One of my all time favorite movies & it also has an awesome soundtrack 👌
5:23 I think that’s Patti Boyd
thank you - was hoping someone else caught that
A perfect movie.
Masterpiece..truly underrated …Billy crushed this role …can’t decide which was his very best performance this or his role as distance runner Steve Prefontaine .
learned a lot, awesome! liked!
The rumors have been that Brad Pitt "dropped out" of AF because he either "fell out of love with the Hammond character" or that it was financial. But I remember the rumor around the biz at the time was that Pitt and Crowe amicably split ways because not only could Pitt not learn to play the guitar even a little, but he never even looked comfortable holding it. Again, just a rumor at the time.
love this movie!!!!
I love this movie but I forgot Fallon played in it. 😂
Talk about an awkward ride to the airport
This movie is in my top 3 of all time.
Same ❤
I like Sarah Polley, but Kate Hudson nailed the Penny Lane part. "What kind of beer?"
Love this movie!
Same ❤
Very underrated, I bought the DVD before I saw the movie.
one of the best movies of all time. "you'll meet them all again on their long journey to the middle"
5:24 lol this is pattie boyd dude. george harrison is in the pic. do you know anything about classic rock
one of my favorite movies of all time. Period.
Im so glad Billy Crudup ended up playing Russell
"Hey, I'm incendiary, too, man!"
“What happened” is that Crowe made a fantastic movie 👍
Peter Frampton also taught Crudup to play guitar for this.
I love this movie so much!
Cameron Crowe will probably beat best be remembered for Jerry Maguire, but to me, this is his masterpiece.
Patrick Fuget deserves more credit for the greatness of my favorite movie
Daisy Jones and the six ripped this movie off ...big time.
Such a good movie.
It's Cameron's masterpiece...
Garrett wang aka Harry Kim from star trek voyager almost had the lead role of this film, since he was good friends with Cameron Crowe. I forget the exact details but he couldn't make audition after he had talked to Crowe about being in it.
Wow.. big Voyager Fan.. I never knew that.. shame he didn't land the role.
@@MrEdcrowley100 he mentioned it on his podcast with Tom paris...delta flyers. Great podcast, they're doing ds9
Which role was the LEAD ROLE? Russell Hammond? Wang was a D-lister after Voyager and never would've be considered for that role.
@@titusmccarthy he said it was one of the leading roles. He mentioned it on his podcast
@@thecunninlynguist He never would've got that role. They were looking for someone famous.
Never saw this
We all still love that movie. I think everyone is put off with that inferior Directors Cut
Why do you show a pic of George Harrison's wife, Patti Boyd? She was NOT a 'groupie.' She married the Beatle soon after they met in 1963.
🎶Blue jean baby-L.A. lady-🎶
Best movie ever
Top three film for me 🩷
it's a good movie but your title is "what happened to..." is confusing. I clicked thinking you'd have something to tell me about something happening to the movie. apparently it ought to be "what really happened in Almost Famous?" just like your other video "what really happened to red dawn?" some people just want clicks and don't care about quality or clarity. if more people shared correct information, the internet would be a better place.
Did Crowe make whoopie with Jan Wenner?
What is this, a question from The Dating Game?! “I’d have to say up the butt Bob.”
@@johnschlaefflin2100 it WAS the 70s🤭
Oh, the movie that Kate Hudson a star? Other than 200 Cigarettes, what has she done?
Try Google.
The title of your video is misleading. "What happened to" and "what happened in" are two very different things. "What happened to Almost Famous" suggests that something BAD happened to it... except nothing bad happened, on the contrary.
The groupies are supposed to be around 14 years old, jsyk
Sadly the mother was 100% on as he ended up dying from a drug overdose. He got his 15 minutes of fame and sounds like his life didn't go well afterwards. Sad.
Who? He’s still alive and well. What are you talking about?
Cameron Crowe is one of the most overrated directors of his era.
No mention of the controversy with the ages of the kids who accompanied these rockers? And the power imbalances at play all around? I thought this film was cancelled?
Cancelled? No. It was not.
@5:25 that is Patti Boyd. NOT Penny Lane.
I Loved this Movie!
Same❤
Overrated movie, for sure
You probably liked Rock Star 2001. LOL.
