Realistically speaking the greatest album of all time is a futile title because obviously everything is subjective here, the greatest album of all time could be on a hard rive in somebodies basement and nobody would know, but is it then the greatest? If you want to figure it out, you can't talk about it in a vacuum and you need to not only consider the context of an album but also the wider effects that album has on the world. For example, melon here doesn't love mbdtf and gave it a 6, but he recognises it as one of Kanyes best despite that because of its context and what it has gone on to become in terms of its influence and stature. TPAB in this case is basically the same but because it has that 10 status for so many people it's elevated further and here we are at #1 of all time. At the end of the day if its your number 1 album that's all that matters, and if tons of people agree then it's safe to say it is number 1 of all time. This isn't to say better music doesn't possibly exist, but if nobody knows about that music then it doesn't really matter and like I said it's all subjective anyway and that "better" music might not be better for everyone, just as TPAB isn't everyone's number 1 either.

I was a sophomore in high school when TPAB came out. this album was the one of first albums I’ve ever sat through in its entirety and let me just say how much this helped me understand the importance of self acceptance. this album opened my eyes in a time of nativity of racism and how deep it runs. as this album and I grow older, I’ll always come back to it as an anchor to what I identify with. we all know that TPAB is gonna age like a fine wine. I’ll probably be 50 and never forget it’s impact on me!
even as an atheist who grew up in poverty, that track will always be close to my heart. One of the reasons why i have so much appreciation for TPAB and how beautifully and poetically it portrays human suffering and misery.
I know it's an extremly cold take, but man was this album mindblowingly amazing. I don't think any other album had such a big impact on me as this one.
It didn't change me per say, but before kendrick I was listening to bbno$ and yung gravy (just soundcloud rap shit and cringey meme music) , and I started listening to kendrick and kanye at the same time and was non stop exclusively listening to all of their work for months, and TPAB wasn't my favourite at first but it stands out the most as time goes on and is now my favourite album of all time due to my ability to dive deeper and deeper into it and its context of how it was created and what everything means. I still like bbno$ but I have nothing drawing me back to his music, I'm happy to see his success tho as fan from when he was quite small and I only knew his music from gaming youtubers who were friends of his
Yes as much as I like the site it is a bit foolish to pretend their charts are representative of the "general public" take on best albums. RYM is very cliquey and visited by people like, well, Fantano and his audience, people really personally invested in music in general. That's not a bad thing of course, but it doesn't reflect general societal attitudes.

I’m happy to have discovered this album (and Kendrick) the week Mr Morale dropped. Unaware of its status in the community I was able to appreciate the record as the work of art it is
I remember in 2015 feeling lucky to be alive to see TPAB drop. I thought what I felt was probably the same feeling other people had who saw legendary albums drop in their time, like 36 Chambers, ATLiens, The Blueprint, or even Purple Rain or something. The album dropped and then I saw it make a tidal wave through the culture. So fucking awesome. Dusting off the 12” today in celebration.
I don't see how one can see TPAB as any different then OKC in terms of it being number 1 due to general agreeability. The fact that general respectability and general agreeableness are the determining factors in high placement is not something unique to OKC, but a feature of how these aggregate sorting algorithms work. both albums amazing obviously
The general agreeableness by 26-year-old guys who started listening to music in 2013. Not by anyone who actually enjoys listening to music without crunching numbers.
@@CriptoniteG sure, but it's still a pretty good way of seeing general opinion if that's what you want to know. @@cyanpunch6140 I’m sure it goes back before then, but my point still stands that the online music community still don’t see music for what it is and rather would rather stamp numbers over everything.
I'd imagine this shake-up is somewhat representative of RYM's average user bases' median age. OK Computer is a flawless album, but the people who were really struck by it are now of an older generation. You could argue, I suppose, that TPAB is kind of the OK Computer for a slightly younger generation. That being said, it's also a totally stone cold masterpiece, as we all know. I'll never forget my first listens of either.
IMHO if Larks Tongues in Aspic and Red were as widely known as ITCOTCK they'd both be regarded more highly. The production is better, the songwriting is crazier, and I found a lot of moments on those two albums to be more compelling than ITCOTCK
Im a Pink Floyd and classic rock guy. TPAB is one of those albums out of my genre preference that I really was blown away by. Just expert craftsmanship that rivals my favorites.
I really liked the statement you made about how people consume music because they’re classic and because of how unique they sound or the aesthetic. It resonated with me because I typically listen to older albums with the same mindset. I don’t dig deep into the message or lyricism much. However I feel like it’s important to do that, not only for perspectives sake, but also to guide the listener inside a completely different era. Maybe when I listen to 100 gecs in 30 years i’ll get it.
i think the reason ok computer is that well recieved in rate your music is because how well it aged, that feeling of alienation that songs like subterranian homesick alien or the guide of how to be part of society of fitter happier are more relevant than ever in the internet age, for me it was also my introduction to music in a more deep level, before radiohead i used to listen to pop punk or jazz playlist back when i was 16
I think what's great about this album is the topics addressed are still relevant till this day and imo it's production is timeless since it's a unique fusion jazz n funk with hip hop, so the album will never get old. Even if the problems addressed are somehow fixed in a very very distant future, people will be able to look back on the album as a recap of a time when such problems did exist.
Well it hasn't been that long, not even a decade, a better way of saying it is that it is likely these topics will continue to ring true for a long while, and the topics addressed aren't anything new just a great analysis from kendrick on it all from his own perspective. Not only that but it's deeply personal parts can hit almost everyone regardless of if they can relate simply because of kendricks ability to put you into his world with his words and be very detailed in his Wrighting, it's captivating whether you are the target audience or not and whether you can relate to it or not
You could argue that the topics expressed in OK computer are also timeless since they are related to the fundamental flaws in humans, which we will always possess unless something changes.
@@logosethospathos4802 Oh easily. I think melon bringing up the fact that Ok, Computer has so much universal appeal doesn't really matter since To Pimp a Butterfly also appeals to nearly everyone.
I feel like the album i so much more then just it’s political issues tho, not saying they aren’t great but whenever I hear people talk about tpab it’s always about how relevant politically it is. The album is very much a triumph in self actualisation, identity and not letting one’s past define you and improving society as a whole not just the racial injustices. It’s an album that has too many layers and I don’t think we’ll ever be able to uncover them all, now that is special.

TPAB was one of the first albums I listened to upon release that completely blew me away from a purely musical perspective due to how interesting and ambitious I found it. The music and production alone are worthy of high praise, but then on top of that, you have the excellent lyricism, engaging storytelling, difficult concepts/themes discussed, etc., which all just elevate it even further. I don’t think it’s possible to really agree on a best album of all time, but I do firmly believe TPAB deserves to be in that discussion, and I’m happy it’s still continuing to get high praise and recognition years later.
All music taste will end up on Ok Computer No matter what kind of music you listen you'll end up listening to Ok Computer sooner or later You cannot escape it, its inevitable, do not resist
It's definitely worn off its appeal quite a lot for me personally. Radiohead in general I just find to be pretty boring when I'm not really in the mood, tends to be style over substance a lot of the time.
@@fourseasons4105 I can't see how would "style over substance" apply in music. Also i can't see how one wouldn't see substance in OK Computer and In Rainbows
It means RYM continues to finesse their ranking algorithms to get more contemporary records in the Top 100. Coupled with the general elevation of rap music as the new generation's favorite mode of musical expression.
whether or not fantano will publicly admit it, his review of this album has definitely contributed to the immense amount of hype and praise this album has received over the years
i think thats true but what truly allowed the review to be as influential as it ended up being was the fact that kendrick (similarly to radiohead btw) is one of the most popular rappers of the 2010s and was already taken very seriously prior to the release of tpab while also having hits such as swimming pools and more "hip hop heads respect-worth" moments in his career like the control verse. and i kinda think that's similar to what happened to the money store and its review, during the 2010s hip hop was so popular that even more underground releases were bound to reach relatively bigger audiences, especially if promoted well enough (with, for example, the first 10/10 review fantano recorded). i mainly say this because i think that when you look at to be kind and you won't get what you want, while obviously there are many fans and people who look at those albums with very high reguard, because rock isn't really as relevant a genre as it used to be, less people are going to listen to those albums just after watching fantano's review
Listening to this album at 15 when I really didn’t “get” hip hop and rap opened my eyes to the black experience from my relatively sheltered and suburban life up to that point.
I LOVE Ok Computer. It's one of my most listened to albums ever but would not consider it the greatest of all time. How did it keep the #1 spot for so long lmaoo
@@roosterman84 You can have something that's more agreeable and listenable so you play it more and like something else more at the same time. Kinda the whole basis of pop music really
First and foremost, I’d like to appreciate this lil moment in hip hop history. Definitive album fa sho. I like how this really sparks discussion about the album. I definitely think people have over politicized it and made it so that it doesn’t seem as accesible to certain audiences, when ultimately it’s just another record of Kendrick trying to grow as a person; it just so happens to be that the issues he faces on this record reflect bigger societal issues. I definitely hope more people aren’t afraid to give this album a try. Overall, pleased asf to see a black man win on the net.
I wish I liked TPAB more. Even when it came out and the hype was in full force, I felt myself thinking if this was someone other than Kendrick I'd be skipping through half of the songs. They just don't do anything for me. What I like on it, I really like, but so much of it I could just leave.
TPAB is pretty much a perfect album and should be celebrated that. Is it the #1 of all time? No, it´s not. The album is #1 on this list, because essencially it is still a smash hit! It´s connecting with millions of kids every day as we speak. And for the next ten years or so, probably will get even stronger, as hip hop is becoming more and more popular within the newer generations.
Was a huge fan of KDot I was so hyped to see his live band jazz performances done which mostly appear albeit differently on his untitled but TPAB didn’t hit fir me at first, obviously much was lost based on how culturally on point the record was I just didn’t connect though I knew it was a great piece of work. I was a dude who wanted a whole album of what he performed on the late shows, instead he dug deep into lyrics concepts and again a long format story. I went on to love DAMN and prior to MrMorale I went back to the whole discography and TPAB hit so different, I wondered wtf I missed and then I realized in 2022 I had streaming music to let the whole thing play in sequence. I shorted myself by just picking a song or two in 2015 and being like well, this ain’t GKMC and sure ain’t S80 or what he’s been previewing. Ironically doing that let me look at MrMorale and say it’s a complete body of work all of it, yes there’s jams and singles. I don’t know if TPAB is my best album, or KDots but it’s proof in his catalog that the man doesn’t just make required music to listen to, it’s music that requires you to listen to it. I also understand most of the cultural relevance is not made for me nor can I understand it on a level others might but I do think any album you come back to and realize oh shit I missed THIS? is a consideration to stand amongst the greats especially in an era where so much is put it out forget it out the next in
I don't mind this at all. TPAB was is a special album for me. It was the first Hip Hop album I ever listened to. I was a complete Jazz/Prog/Rock guy in 2015 and I was very dismissive of Hip Hop. TPAB blew my mind and proved to me that hip hop can be super complex musically. It can be ambitious, exciting and absolutely epic. I'm still not really a hip hop guy, I just listen to some stuff hear and there. But Kendrick Lamar is a top artist and deserves every bit of recognition and praise he's getting.
I think it’s interesting you bring up Pink Floyd so much in this video because I’ve found myself listening to both TPAB and The Wall over the years and coming to the realization that TPAB is every bit as much of a operatic character study of a hip hop artist as the wall was for rock stars. Obviously Waters album was semi-autobiographical and Kendrick’s is all about him but I can’t help but see the similarities. This theme of a star rising and becoming self-destructive and learning to overcome that for the better. It’s kind of messianic story telling, but i wouldn’t necessarily call either album egotistical because of that. Great comparison.
If it’s an album that could qualify as a best among an entire genre then it can be argued that it is a best of all time. Mine is Disintegration but others have different views. That’s what’s great about music.
Ok Computer is the inventor of music, the Jesus Christ of music, the Messiah and the Creator. Music didn't exist before Ok Computer and stopped existing at the end of The Tourist.
Radiohead is my favorite band of all time, but I'm glad TPAB is number one. I actually started listening to Radiohead because OK Computer was so high on this and other lists. I'm glad people will be more prone to listening to TPAB because of its placement on this list. Here's to OK Computer's 10 year run o7
Radiohead describes so called negetive emotions or depression, melancholia in incredible ways, but out of that they don't have much themes, thom haven't covered more themes in compared to Kendrick and now after Mr. Morale and Big Steppers, oh god.
@@anshuuu9708sry for a 7 month old reply but I completely disagree. If we take into account Radiohead's entire catalogue as well they cover much more than just the melancholic feelings of OK Computer and most of Kid A
My problem with this change is I know it's going to cause a massive culture of rejection towards this album. Much like it's not hard to find a bunch of haters for OK Computer, we're going to see a lot of people hating TPAB for frivolous reasons mostly because it's supposedly THE best and maybe isn't perfect
So you didn't say that TPAB is the best album of all time, so what we all wanna know... what do you think is the best? It's something I've wondered for a long time.
This is an interesting thing as I think melon has probably listened to more music and more varied music than most listeners, and it would be cool to see what he believes is the best and if it is really better than TPAB. Granted calling it better isnt really the point, its more so what he prefers and there's obviously many factors going into that, for example TPAB is my number 1 overall, but on a regular basis I would rather listen to donuts by J dilla or songs in the key of life by stevie wonder, albums which rank just as high as TPAB for me and get more play (even though over all TPAB is my most listened to album by a long shot, I listen to multiple other albums more over a period of time, like atleast 15 other albums before I listen to TPAB again)
Honestly, this is just a big dub for hip-hop. As someone who thinks every genre deserves praise, I hate to see people that claim that hip-hop is bad or that they hate it when an album like TPAB exists. As much as we all love rock, it is the most agreeable genre among music fans and so to see a sometimes misunderstood genre succeed critically, even if it is just the one album, is something to appreciate.
I can totally appreciate TPAB as a piece of art but hiphop has never been my cup of tea. There are only a very few hiphop artists I can say I really enjoy listening to
"maybe there has been some shifts that i've been unaware of" yeah there was a month or so in 2020(?) where Wish You Were Here took the spot. Otherwise yup, always has been OKC
Watching this after J Cole said TPAB was boring and then apologized for it is so funny He literally picked one of the most beloved albums of all time to try to diss 😂
With everyone backlashing giving TPAB negative reviews, and then people backlashing to the backlash giving negative reviews to Ok Computer. We will see Wish You Were Here take the #1 spot. (Until a backlash happens to it…)
The RYM top 50 is full of the safest choices I’ve ever seen, generally agreeable music that everyone considers to be good. And yet I wouldn’t consider them to be my favourites of any of their respective genres, not would I think a lot of people. So no, I don’t think TPAB is the best album ever, it’s a 10/10, but there’s at least 20 10/10 I like more.
I remember listening to TPAB the night it dropped. I had to listen to it again, and again. I've thought that it's the best hip hop album created ever since. Best album ever? Idk, but it's definitely the best hip hop album.

I always never understood why my friends would never get it when I played Kendrick (they all listen to really niche alt genres and artists) But the way you put it makes it so much clearer I’m not of colour and don’t relate to the music but since I’ve been listening to hip hop and that type of influential music for the black community and real meaningful reality checks and questions in the music it’s something I understand the meaning of and what the music is symbolising. They just dont appreciate the music because they dont understand the context and bigger picture then just how the music sounds
I never fully got TPAB to be honest. while it hit some super high highs for me on wesley's theory and free, half the album was skips for me. OK computer always felt a bit stronger to me, but i guess its the shift in the culture
you just didn't like it that much. you're framing it as "the culture" being this massive absurd mechanism that randomly decides that "weaker music" is better than "stronger music". nah, it's just that you happened to like an album that a ton of people including you liked, then didn't like an album that a ton of people (not including you) liked. it's not this super deep conundrum
Agree, there's some really good tracks on there and I get that its an impressive execution of a concept album, but I never found it super "listenable" front to back, especially compared to GKMC.

I don't see how one can see TPAB as any different then OKC in terms of it being number 1 due to general agreeability. I maily listen to rap and like Kendrick but it had a ton of misses imo
"still relevant" it's been 7 years
@@logosethospathos4802 Oh easily. I think melon bringing up the fact that Ok, Computer has so much universal appeal doesn't really matter since To Pimp a Butterfly also appeals to nearly everyone.

One of his best reviews imo, very detailed and well articulated
Absolutely. If it were not for Fantano, this album would not be rated #1 on this site.
i think thats true but what truly allowed the review to be as influential as it ended up being was the fact that kendrick (similarly to radiohead btw) is one of the most popular rappers of the 2010s and was already taken very seriously prior to the release of tpab while also having hits such as swimming pools and more "hip hop heads respect-worth" moments in his career like the control verse. and i kinda think that's similar to what happened to the money store and its review, during the 2010s hip hop was so popular that even more underground releases were bound to reach relatively bigger audiences, especially if promoted well enough (with, for example, the first 10/10 review fantano recorded). i mainly say this because i think that when you look at to be kind and you won't get what you want, while obviously there are many fans and people who look at those albums with very high reguard, because rock isn't really as relevant a genre as it used to be, less people are going to listen to those albums just after watching fantano's review

Glad to see The Piss Anthony Breathes finally get the recognition it deserves

OK Computer is the To pimp a butterfly of art rock

There are only a very few hiphop artists I can say I really enjoy listening to
"maybe there has been some shifts that i've been unaware of"
yeah there was a month or so in 2020(?) where Wish You Were Here took the spot. Otherwise yup, always has been OKC
Now it's just BADBADNOTGOOD Computer
Dark lane demo tapes is the greatest album of all time
Woahwoahwoahwoah…
Lmaoooo
U mean CLB or Scorpion
Oh yeah oh yeah the GOAT of GOATS
Watching this after J Cole said TPAB was boring and then apologized for it is so funny He literally picked one of the most beloved albums of all time to try to diss 😂
With everyone backlashing giving TPAB negative reviews, and then people backlashing to the backlash giving negative reviews to Ok Computer. We will see Wish You Were Here take the #1 spot. (Until a backlash happens to it…)
Went back to this album after J. Cole dissed it and TPAB is still a classic, straight up fire lyricism and dope experimental beats.
That is the most RateYourMusic screenshot of all time.
Nah it’s overrated asf
It’s not even Kendrick’s best he said so himself 😂
@@thomo2127he only said ‘DAMN.’ was his best to promote it. (because he just released it before that interview.) do your research or use some common sense. it’s not that hard homie!
@jslf1871 again when has he said tpab was his best smh
I feel basic right now. I’m white, TPAB is my favorite album, my favorite show is Seinfeld, and my second favorite album is Ok Computer. I’ve never used RYM. The basic is just in my veins.
Let's make Dark Side of The Moon nr 1 just to make Melon angry
I always never understood why my friends would never get it when I played Kendrick (they all listen to really niche alt genres and artists)
But the way you put it makes it so much clearer I’m not of colour and don’t relate to the music but since I’ve been listening to hip hop and that type of influential music for the black community and real meaningful reality checks and questions in the music it’s something I understand the meaning of and what the music is symbolising. They just dont appreciate the music because they dont understand the context and bigger picture then just how the music sounds
Wrong! That title belongs to In the Court of the Crimson King.
True. Great record.
TPAB is a 10/10 album but it's like reading a lengthy book about social issues which can get boring that's why I would vote OK Computer above TPAB if I had to choose.
yeah It's an album i can appreciate but i dont find it overly listenable. I'd have to be in a very particular mindset
@@kingcrimson4133 naw not really. its just that culturally we're at a point where more people resonate and appreciate TPAB over OK Computer which is why it's generally rated higher
