Psy is actually a very popular artist in Korea and had hits long before Gangnam style. He has a successful record label too.
The new PSY is Luis Fonsi
The thing is that after about the late 2000s, I realize I've completely unfamiliar with every single artist up there, or maybe I've heard one song of theirs in an ad or something.
It's also interesting to see when certain albums hit. It's very obvious when "Thriller" and "Ray of Light" hit and when "Titanic" was released.
@jcortese3300 Really?? Coldplay, Adele?
@@gerardmackay8909 I've heard and liked one song by both and do think Adele has a marvelous voice. I'm familiar with them, but that's about it. (I'm still finding new music, but not on the charts.)
@@jcortese3300 Fair enough! It is course all subjective but I think most of us have a lasting fondness for the music that first inspired us in our ‘Wonder Years’ and for me that will always be the big names of the late 70s to mid 90s
Ray Of Light was when I became a fan of Madonna as a recording artist. GREAT album.
Its interesting, i was born in 2005 and i wasn't familiar with the 1990s at all but was way more familiar in the other decades
This clearly shows how music died once the 2000's came along. Astonishing to see in many ways
Music didn't necessarily die... but the rock genre certainly fell from grace after decades on top and was replaced by various pop and hip hop groups.
The best music there is has come out since 2000...how has it died?
Early 2000s wasn't so bad. I think it really started to go downhill from 2005-2008.

Luis Fonsi is actually a good singer. Try listening his old songs. Despacito was actually " the moment " he realized making comercial songs (regueton) was giving him more money and making him more famous. So he is just making regueton instead of making songs that he used to.

this is a very cool way to look at these artists' sales data and gain a stronger sense of their longetivity and such. A huge shift happens as digital media takes hold, but Impressive to see the staying power of Queen even after Freddie Mercury's death. Elvis also has an impressive longevity along with Michael Jackson and The Beatles. I was very taken with how Madonna stayed on that list almost the entire 20 years she is on it--and only dipping off it briefly towards the end of her time on it. Who knows how much longer she might have remained there if radio didn't literally stop playing her new music because of ageism.
This is really true. At some point, Madonna got just one year TOO old, or something. And not just for the radio execs. This kids turned viciously on her, too, particularly after Gaga appeared on the scene.
@@classiclife7204 Has there been any good music, after Hung Up (2005)?
I listened to some of her "newer stuff" - wasn't impressed.
So, maybe it's a little more than ageism. Tina Turner., for example, has been successful well into her 60s...
@@Zett76 I've not heard everything, but probably not, lol
ageism? get real man. it's simple math. pop music has tons of artists. radio stations have limited space. time can't be expanded to make room for one more when it doesn't fit. blaming an "ism" is just lazy.
@@SneakySolidSnake No. It's ageism because they stopped playing her music because of her age. It wouldn't be ageism if they had played her music. and if it had failed to connect with an audience, they stopped. They cut her off while she was still making some great music. By your logic, it's survival of the fittest, so they should have let her sink or soar the way the did before in her career and as with any artist they are playing. But I don't fully agree with your way of seeing the music scene. The internet has expanded the possibilities and there are 8 Billion people on this planet. There are musicians you and I have never heard of who have hundreds of thousands, even millions of fans and are living well. Because it's a big wide world out there. But even if things were limited, there are plenty of folks who are not as talented as Madonna, nor as innovative who could step aside for greatness. She hasn't laid her crown down just yet.
Madonna "Queen of Pop" 21 years on this chart taking the top spot from MJ in 1985 and holding the #2 spot or #1 spot for the next 7 years. She stayed on this chart until 2006. Many of these years she was the only female on the chart at all. She was the first female to dominate this chart and will always be the Queen of POP.
She still can't sing. Rely on gimmicks
'clears throat'....I guess you didn't see how well Whitney performed? And in an era when it was extremely tough for black women to perform outside their race singing R&B. When Whitney debuted in the late '80s, the highschool I would later attend still had segregated proms.

How elvis stayed in top 11 until his death….amazing and another amazing record is by MJ
One thing that Michael Jackson, Elvis, Beatles, Elton John, Eagles and Eminem have in common: they all dominated each entire generation. Elvis and the Beatles had a fierce dispute in the early and mid-70s and at the end of the decade it ended with Elton John and the Eagles competing. Michael Jackson led the entire 80s and a little of the 90s. Eminem literally took control of the 2000s for himself. We can agree that these 6 singers made an impact on the history of music, marking each generation.

MJ was sabotaged, he could have easily ruled the 00s as well. Invincible was selling faster than Thriller before Sony stopped promoting it so they could pressure MJ to sell his half of Sony (look into it its pretty dark). His style will forever be relevant with each new generation. This is why he still has over 20 million monthly listeners on Spotify, with no promo or releases, and why he is the highest earning celebrity for 10 years in a row and why Thriller goes to number one every Halloween, almost 40 years after it dropped.

I love to see the change of music tastes through the years, from rock, rap, r&b
Tastes don't change That much. I love disco, grew up through the 80s and clubbing early 90s. Guess which music i Still enjoy. BUT the bigger question is, when did i stop buying music? I will happily throw on some trance music or lofi on YT and cast it to my TV and try to catch Tiestos weekly show on my local radio station, but will not buy anything. My frequent music buying days are done. It isn't that tastes changed so much as those who run the industry changed their offering and the current group of buyers handed over their money accordingly.... When One Direction were a thing i was like Who? Never heard of them. But to those who buy music it was a different story... Music buyers today will leave comments on some 80s and early 90s stuff how good it is revealing they have those same tastes, but that style music is not available to be bought and the labels don't push it.
Of all of these type top lists over time, I find this one to be the most telling.

I would tell them they had numerous number one singles and albums in the US and they played the biggest concert venues a rock band could play across the entire country. If that doesn't doesn't qualify a rock band as being 'huge' in a country, then I don't know what does.
And again, they would have achieved stadium status in the US after their performance at Live Aid.
And I don't need you to tell me who Brian and Roger are. I happen to be a huge fan since the 1970's, and I'm American. I witnessed personally how 'huge' they were and my brother-in-law saw them in concert at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN!!!
Early 2000 was the peak of rap. Eminem in his prime and lil Wayne, and kanye were coming into the game and legends like snoop, jay z, dre, 50 cent were on top of their game. It’s also incredible to see someone as controversial as Eminem be on top for over 10 years
I wish there was a little "hee hee!" every time Michael Jackson passed another artist.
YES BRO HAHA
@@abeatlesfan6603 👍🏻😏
@@abeatlesfan6603 dude keep the f**k down! Tell me why you hate Michael Jackson?
@@abeatlesfan6603 I mean I feel

@@abeatlesfan6603
It was a joke man.
I like how Michael Jackson was being kind by making other artists be at the top for a millisecond
Anonymous this comment is so funny because this sounds like Michael Jackson so much 😂
I’m surprise his numbers didn’t comeback when he died
@@jakarisecession8539 i'm surprised too. I've read a few articles/studies that claim he Is the dead artist who More income generates. Above elvis or anyone you may think
@@salvadorortiz1826 By the time he died.... Digital Sales were massively popular. Jackson sold a lot of albums but still was kinda outsold by the digital artists of that time globally.
@Jackie Tearie I was shocked to see Michael Jackson still dominating the top position around 93 - 94. He didn't release any new music during those years and the FALSE allegations had exploded during that time as well.
It's funny to me how 2Pac didn't make the chart at all but literally nobody can deny his impact on the music world.
I'm happy that there are only a few artists here that I don't actually know of. One of the perks of having an open mind and listening to the greats of all genres.
Stay classy y'all! 😎
Elton John had a cool ride charting on top with various giants at that time. Though it hilarious when I knew some names still in early 2000s then there were guys I had literally no idea about.
Nobody talking about how Elton John was literally either on top or at the very least relevant in the top ten for darn near 30 years even going #1 in 2000 three decades after his prime. Crazy!
I'm surprised that Isley brothers weren't on the list. They had number 1 album at least one every decade from the 50s to the 2000s.
@@sarthak7964 I like the beatles as much as you do, but I think it’s time to shut up
He’s a legend
@@sarthak7964 I think most people know this. At least I would hope.
It seemed like in the mid 70s he had album after album coming out and they were all great . Unfortunately after Brown Dirt Cowboy his music changed .
