    good job but to be definitively efficient, you should put grease everywhere. grease et the only thing very efficient against rust. put grease between metal and carpet, inside door, behind metallic bumper, under the vehicle, behind the repairs you can make (everywhere inside the body - hidden erea - instead of using paint), hollow areas (necessarily hidden, so no need to be aesthetic). For rear wings unreachable with a paintbrush, use an extender and poor old oil everywhere each year.Handyman Experience - 35 years. From france

    Whats the secret to keeping the butt weld from warping in some? It always seems like no matter how slow I go to avoid heat, I still get a lot of warping. I'd love to have near perfect seams like this!

      The best way to keep your panel from warping is to do small spot stich welds spaced around three inches apart, you can see these welds at 3:25. When we do these stich welds we will skip around to keep the panel from getting to hot, and we will also air quench the area after each weld.

    Also, Did they cut the sail panel off of the full quarter to the shape of the body line on the car? I have a 73 and think this is better than the oddly shaped replacement for the 73.

      I'm not sure where they cut the sail panel from the quarter originally, but at 10:00, you can see how they finished trimming it for the new quarter. They followed the body line of the quarter, but not exactly on the body line. This gave them two flat surfaces on the same plane for the magnets to hold both panels together. The key is to get the gap between the two panels as close as possible for welding. Also at around the same time, they pointed out where they butt-welded the sail panel at the front and rear of the panel by the quarter. I hope this helps!

    I see you cut the back off as it's slightly different on the 73,4 to 72 and prior

      Yes. We mentioned in the story that '73 quarter panels were not available at the time. So, the guys at MCR were forced to use panels from a '72 Nova.     Did they use magnets to hold the new skin against the existing metal?

      They cut both panels so that there was a minimal gap between both panels. Then they used the magnets to hold both of the panels on the same plane as they welded them together.
      Look closely at the 1:10 mark. You can get an idea of how closely they trimmed both panels and how they meet on the same plane. Also note they do a little hammer work to level each panel before finishing the weld.

      These are Goodmark quarter panels. The MCR guys used '72 quarters because the '73 panels were not available at the time. Goodmark does have '73 Nova panels on its website now. www.goodmarkindustries.com/c-2021-factory-style-quarter-panels.aspx

      We rarely talk about money when we do stories because that is something between the car owner and the shop. MCR's work is top-notch and they charge accordingly. The hours needed to bring a car back like this are extensive, likely thousands of billable hours.
      Now, not all cars need to be torn down to this level, so if you're looking at replacing just a quarter panel, these Goodmark panels go for around $150. Then figure out the shop's estimate for "time and materials." Hope this helps!
