This is exactly my sort of game.....You open the box,you set up the board, you stand back and think to yourself 'wow, where the heck do i start and how do i take it all in'....gravvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvyyy!!!!!! Good explanation and good camera work.
WOW!! I can't remember the last time I got this excited about a game! I'd read the rules and seen early prototype pics, but your review really sent it home for me. This has jumped to the top of my must have list! One question though, do you HAVE to power up your dice? I thought I read a 'may' in the rules somewhere, but I suppose that would be silly because then everyone would just power up to 5s and then stop. Oh and thanks for your reviews, I really enjoy them. In your next CHIT CHAT I'd love to hear more about people's favourite mechanics. I know that Jeremy is a Euro gamer, but I'd love to know more about the rest of your gang. (if there is already a chit chat where you talk about mechanics and I missed it, could you let me know which one it was?) it really helps to put validity to people's reviews. For example: if I were to review a game with bag building it might not be too fair because I'm not a huge fan of that mechanic.
Loved this review, very informative about a game I have been half-following for a while. Few questions: How did player scaling work? Sounds like you want more people to get more cocoa, but maybe at 2p just more dice? Release date? :) Thanks so much, I really like your review format, maybe even more of you two just chatting at the end about the game would be nice :)
I’d be fascinated to know how player colour choices change in design - here we have red, blue, purple and green - yet final product dropped purple and green for yellow and black.
Nice review thanks! I've had my eye on this game since the BGG listing appeared, appreciate the solid run-through from you guys. Do you have any information on availability in the UK?
This sounds very interesting. I definitely will be on the look out for this. Is the board art final? It looks a little muted or dull when compared to how vibrant tzolkin is. Maybe its just hard to tell on camera?
Should be renamed to ‘Cacao is a very important resource’, or ‘ spreadsheet of the Gods’. I can see many people being turned off by how this looks. Very imposing and dull.
Just to confirm the comments above. Teotihuacan is currently available to preorder from several sources and will be available in retail in the United States around the middle of October. It will have its EU premiere at Essen SPIEL.
Rodigee Merlin is a lightweight compared to this. Besides the iconography, I would almost call Merlin a gateway + game. This is a heavy Euro on the same level as Tzolkin.
I finally got to play Marco Polo this last weekend and I didn't like it. Hearing this compared to that worries me slightly. I did enjoy Tzolk'in though. This will have to be a try-before-buy.
Let me first say I love Grand Austria Hotel (my wife and I play this for our date nights), and I really like Lorenzo, too. Marco Polo had a "can't do what you want" vibe to it. It's difficult to describe. I don't mind tight games, but if there are 10 really cool things you can do in a game, but you will only get to do 3 or 4, I get sour on that game. Legends of Andor did the same for me - in that game you could fight monsters, discover stuff in the fog, buy cool items...oh, wait, no you couldn't. If you spend too much time in the fog, you will lose. If you fight too many monsters, you will lose. You can't afford to buy items because you need to spend your money upgrading your attack, or you will lose. I hated that the game punished you for spending time doing what it offered you. Similarly in Marco Polo you want to travel? Nope, you don't have enough camels. You want to trade in the market? Ok, but you are going to help this other player. I found that the only real way to be competitive in that game was to only complete orders - you don't even need to travel. It just felt...wrong? I'm not sure "wrong" is the right word, but it just didn't vibe right for me. Having said all that, I'm always willing to play a game twice (just in case I didn't understand something the first time, I played with a bad group the first time, etc). I am willing to try Marco Polo again, but suspect I won't like it. I fully understood the rules, and the group I played with was among my best friends in gaming. Sometimes this happens...you just don't like a game that you really should. :(
I didn't like Marco Polo either. We played it multiple times and in our experience, whoever leaned his main strategy heavy on contracts (even ignoring the exploration aspect) won (by far) most of the times, making the game unidimensional and utterly irrelevant. As you said, there's not point to play a game with many things to do and "multiple paths to victory" if you just can't win against somebody who does only one thing...
Play it at least 2 more times Rico. I didn't like it at first either, but as I've played it more I've grown to love it. There are multiple paths to victory. But what you cannot do is try to play away from the strengths of your character. That's always a recipe for disaster. But having played this at Dice Tower Con and owning Marco Polo, I can tell you they play very differently. This game is tight, but Marco Polo can be punishingly tight if you play it poorly. This game doesn't beat you down quite as much.
I own Lorenzo, Grand Austria, and Marco Polo and they all have those I can't do this vibe to me. Definitely give it another shot because I like all three of those games and they alternate in terms of being my favorite. The last game of Marco Polo I played I did a little bit of everything but then got beat out on contracts but I got to a specific city which let me turn in a lot of camels and silk and I ended up jumping far ahead of the contracts heavy player. I dig it but of course not every game is for everyone even from designers you typically enjoy.
Good video! Its interesting that was is brought up in this video is that masks are easy to miss as they are so powerful but frequently reviews on bgg say the opposite in that it is easy to get fooled into thinking masks can be a viable main strategy

After 7 months what is your opinion on the game now? How does it stack against TZOLK'IN and Marco Polo?

Player scaling is handled by reduced rounds and unused workers of a different color. It doesn't lose any of the gameplay with smaller play counts.
Teotihuacan will be available in the United States around the middle of October, 2018. It will have its EU premiere at Essen SPIEL.
This is the first video I've seen of this channel and it's very professional, great job!

This was a near complete version but NOT production final. Things could obviously change at the Printer. However the gameplay is 100% finalized.
jpower2010 I was thinking the same. Hoping it will end up looking a little more vibrant
Compared to the other prototype images I've seen, I am very pleasantly surprised about how vibrant it looked in their photos here.
super pumped about this game. Thanks for the run through and review.
Looking forward to this one! Great overview you guys.
Thank you!!

shatnershairpiece lmao at Spreadsheet of the Gods.
I'm looking forward to this. Are there any hints on when/where this will be available?
It's available for pre order on Amazon ($50) and they state October 3rd as release date...
Nifty. Thank you!
October, around Essen time. I spoke to the publisher about it last week at Dice Tower Con.
Just to confirm the comments above. Teotihuacan is currently available to preorder from several sources and will be available in retail in the United States around the middle of October. It will have its EU premiere at Essen SPIEL.
You can actually save $15 off that Amazon price if you preorder at www.miniaturemarket.com. It's $35 there.
One I would definitely be open to trying! Thanks, guys!
Sign me up for this with AP and all, I don't care. This looks mind blowing.
How does this compare with Merlin? It looks to be the closest big rondel game to this.
Rodigee Merlin is a lightweight compared to this. Besides the iconography, I would almost call Merlin a gateway + game. This is a heavy Euro on the same level as Tzolkin.
I would love to play, but some of my friends are prone to AP. So... gotta think about that.
I rather play this game than Terra Mystica
I don't think the game has much AP to be 100% honest. It's fast.
ManVsMeeple Thanks. I love your game reviews. Keep up the great work
I preordered this with my Kickstarter dice settlers order

What didn't you like about Marco Polo? Would be interested to know!

10:50 You have to pay cocoa equal to NUMBER of COLORS of other dice.
Two players? xD Love you guys! xD ;D
See comment/reply above about fewer players. No worries!
Thanks! I've already pre ordered at Amazon! =P
Looks like an intriguing worker placement game. #mvm12days
For those who don't like the official manual: boardgamegeek.com/filepage/173072/teotihuacan-players-aid-english
I'm not seeing Cthulhu anywhere. I'm out.
Blind buy, just going to wait for a reasonable online price.
It's $34 preorder on www.miniaturemarket.com right now. Doesn't get more reasonable than that.
So mmm... AP much? :D
Zero AP...the turns are super fast....Move a Worker and take one of 3 actions or Pass.
mahjongh. No thanks.
