awwwwww We love you guys!!! Thanks for the shout out and for everything you do! Great video as always, we haven't had a chance to play any of these games ha We have had Anno 1800 sitting on the shelf for about 6 months now, really need to get it played!!
I like the quick review format. Hope to see more of this kind of content. It must be tough to want to have playthroughs of all the games, but know it’s just not possible. You guys are really doing great things.
Pessoa is definitely one of the board games that makes us more proud regarding our (Portuguese) culture, being an amazing representation of what was going on inside Fernando Pessoa's mind itself, one of the best Portuguese poets of all times, it's brilliant in that aspect... We are very glad that both of you enjoyed to play Pessoa and also to hear Monique saying that would like to learn Portuguese just to understand better the meaning behind Pessoa's poetry :D
We knew very little about the theme of the game before it was taught to us. As soon as our friend explained the significance of everything relative to the theme we really began to appreciate the game!
@@BeforeYouPlay that is something we keep reading and hearing regarding Pessoa, at first the theme is a bit foreign but then everything makes perfect sense, even the symbiosis with the mechanics is really good in our opinion.
Fantastic video as always! We always love hearing your thoughts on games. Anno 1800 is one on our list of interest as is Pessoa! Pessoa’s theming is so cool and I’m happy to hear that it really seems to add to the game!
Anno is by far my favorite to place on the table since I bought it early last year. It is a long teach but a very fast paced, pure fun play. It can take 3 hours at first but most games are 1.5hrs for us (in 2, 3 or 4 players) and the mechanics are just so satisfying and there is nothing like hearing "who makes sausages?!" every time during this game :) Can't wait for more content for this game.
Love this format, great to hear just your quick overview and final thoughts on several games so that I can get an idea if they’re of interest to me or not, thx guys! Like you guys, I love Betrayal at House on the Hill regardless of any criticisms of broken scenarios, it’s all about the fun banter going around the table :) You should definitely try the legacy version, the prologue scenario already had us all laughing so much when we completed it.
About Bitoku... In a 2 player game, you only have 1space per forest (the other side of the board) So the competition of who gets it is still there. I love it at 2 players. It can play fast, specially if you play with the same people. I recommend you to try it as 2players. For the organization, Folded Space came out with a perfect insert.
I love Betrayal so much. I've played several scenarios where it feels like no matter how you prepare, the heroes can't win; likewise there's scenarios where the traitor can't win ever. That said, the gameplay makes the game. You need a full table for this, but this is more fun and engaging for everyone than any other game I've played.
I really like these episodes with shorter discussions around games. Don't get me wrong, I will gladly watch a 2-hour play through and a review, but only for games that have already peaked my interest. This is a nice way to be peaked ;)
thank you for the video! i’ve only played Bitoku once at 2 player, so my first impressions are only that - it felt to me the game was kind of working against itself and was too busy and fiddly and long for what it was. Lots of people love love love this game so I’m probably missing something. Happy I got to try it though.
You might find that you enjoy it a lot more ignoring the dice rules completely of the forest so that anyone can place their dice in the forest regardless. That is what we do and it makes the game so much easier. :)
Pessoa was one of the games I was most excited about releasing at Essen last year but I still haven't played it yet! Glad to see you both have and hear your thoughts on it! Thanks for the review
oh, we really love Anno 1800 at 2p, it's fast and challenging, it forces you to interact with the other player, "positive" and painful interaction like in Brass and the timing and efficiency is crucial. I loved the video.
Really enjoy these videos, so I'm pretty happy to know that you will do more of these during the summer :) Thanks guys for your awesome content, I could listen to you for hours ^_^ Cheers !!
Anno 1800 video game is one of my favorite and I'm intrigued how the board game reimplements the core mechanisms of the video games regarding building industries, trading and satisfying people's needs. But yeah, the resource conversion formulas are tedious. I really hope you guys would have a chance to try the video game one day. Managing the production lines is really satisfying. And it has the best of demonstration of how capitalism works.
I've only played Anno 1800 at 2 players and I can say that the player interaction is very present. Maybe it has more at 3-4 players but it definitely doesn't feel like we are missing out when we play at two.
Not a “pc” household… my people! Heehee. Since my dad was one of the first apple employees… i was raised and still live in a Mac household. lol. Love your channel. I’m currently making my way through your YT vids. ;D
Been irrationally resistant with games based on IPs that I am not familiar with or liked (despite owning Vikings Gone Wild which was an app I never played, but that's my present exception). I feel like Anno 1800 would break that, coz all the feedback I've seen makes me really want to get into it.
I enjoyed this episode. I have not played any of these games so it was nice to get some exposure to knew games. Some other games I would suggest playing are Barrage, Empires of the Void 2, Boon Lake, and Isle of Sky. Perhaps you have already covered some of these already but they are games that I enjoy or am interested in.
Anno was a big success in my book, and still is. Just last week I played it again and had such a great time - although I have to recognize it feels better at 3p than at 2p. Regarding Bitoku and Pessoa: I really want to try both of them at some point. And a final note about Fernando Pessoa: the heteronyms were more than just pseudonyms Pessoa would use to write. They were almost like living persons: each one had a biography, character, life experiences. It's fascinating to think he had life stories for each one of them (I may be wrong here but I think I am not) registered on his notes.
Anno 1800 still has trading at 2 players. It's all about specialization. It's an excellent 2 player because of the fact trading isn't optional. Whether 2, 3 or 4 players It's just a matter of if someone has something and if you have a trade token. They can't say no to you. Because of that it scales very well and we have played a lot of games at 2 players and it plays in under an hour at 2 player.
Great reviews! I would flip the reviews for Anno 1800 and Bitoku though. I felt that with Anno 1800 the decisions were more obvious with the cards in hand and the end feeling was just okay, while with Bitoku, I can see how the decisions can feel straight forward, but the race for the different spots always keeps me on my toes.
A bunch of interesting games, for different reasons. Anno 1800 for the mechanic of trying to figure out other players' moves to use them at your advantage. I really like this kind of indirect interaction, having to keep an eye on everyone's board. Bitoku for the art and lore. I love Japanese folklore and Studio Ghibli's anime, even if the board gives me headache... ^^" Pessoa for the AMAZING theme. It's not easy to find good games about literature and art in general, and this is probably one of the most unique theme I've ever heard of. Thank you for the video and the great suggestions! 😊
Love the shout-out to your fellow gamers... It sounds so genuine as compared to some channels, I'm hoping the motivation behind it was good too! Subbed to them too 😁
Thanks for this. I liked hearing about the not-always-new-and-shiny games. I played Betrayal at House on the Hill (the old one) at a friends game night. Now I know why it didn't click for me. 😆 At first 'coop' and then 'one against all' in itself made me feel like it was never coop. Recommendations for next time: Genotype and Merv.
I played video game ANNO 1404 and I think I dipped to 1800 as well, but I've never played the board game. It looked fun, so now I have to get it I guess :-D
Anno 1800. This is a rule that most people miss and I believe you guys did as well. Using the reward from the Population cards is optional. For example, you satisfy a population card's needs; the card as a reward gives you a new blue worker. You don't HAVE to collect that reward. Meaning you don't gain an extra worker and therefore you don't gain an extra card in your hand. Meaning the game does not necessarily have to drag on because you keep gaining new population cards to your hand. We have finished a 2-player playthrough of this game in 45 mins.
Would love to play some Betrayal or Anno 1800. Must admit feeling a little scared about Bitoku, looks complexe. But maybe I'm wrong and should give it a try.
So I have betrayal 2e played a scenario where I was trying to feed my shrunken friends to a cat they had to find a plane and fly out the window. Problem is they could stun the cat and I couldn’t interact with them in any way and more than half the locations where you could find the plane also had a window for some reason
I really enjoy bitoku now that I have a 3d insert and don't have to learn from the rulebook. I agree that the rulebook makes it seem way more complicated than it is. I wonder if I'd like it as much it it didn't look the way it does...
Kinda heartbroken you didn't manage to record Bitoku. Your videos are such an asset when I am pondering buying new games, and this one is definitely towards the top of that list.
I think Ark Nova's length is shortened a bit at four players, because as the game goes on, each player starts to specialize in their own lines of tech. So it's less upon each player, where the the two-player version its just up to them to do it all. I actually prefer it with 3 and 4. I honestly haven't played it with 2, and I'm not sure I would. The players begging others for them to use their copy of the tech is a fun thing too in a four player game. :)

I thought Anno was a huge disappointment, it's basically 2 hours of completing dozens of objective cards. And the trading mechanic theoretically would increase the player interaction but in reality you just go and say "I'll use your factory, take some gold". It's overly repetitive and boring with almost no interaction. Horrible.
We can definitely see how some can find it boring due to the head-down nature of the game (and it is quite dry). It's also quite possible that is is group dependent. The strategy around the table surrounding trading with others was pretty interesting for us. Thanks for sharing your experience
