I have no credentials to back a word I say here apart from being an old school geek and a CIS major (yikes) @Linus Tech Tips. However, with your fancy shop tools, it may be worthwhile to add an additional "diffuser layer" that you use as a spacer between the original sign frame that features the rgb element between the letters, the front of the sign can have a more efficient LED setup sans RGB to illuminated them like they were at your ex employer. This would also eliminate the clearance issues shown in the video. SOLID mockup, and I can't wait to see what you do to get this rocking!
I can't wait to see the final build. I really hope it's super long and detailed. My FAVORITE videos on the channel are the crazy whacky builds in the shop (usually Alex) that get made. I love those breakdowns of all the components/ custom stuff and tools. I could literally watch those videos all day.
This is the first video in a multi part series by you guys where I'm genuinely hyped to see the next episode like you would for a TV show or anime - this was such a fun video, the chemistry seems great and the NCIX sign being a sentimental thing for Linus makes this 'not just a pc we're gonna tear down after the video' kind of build! I usually don't comment, but since Linus and team actually read the comments I feel like pointing out a very positive thing is just as important as criticising something!
You should stick all the LED strips around the inside of each letter as close to the front of each letter as possible. That will allow as much light to show at the front as possible and create the best chance at having good coverage without gaps.
Beared man is now one of my favorites. Keep him on camera please. Haha. He makes Linus eyeroll and it's the best! Can't wait to see him and Riley together.
Try running the LED tape mounted along the vertical sides of the letters to take an edge-lighting approach. It will also alleviate the issues of the shadows from the components mounted down below.
Their warehouse is like the tech nerd version of the candy room from Willy Wonka. Imagine how fun it would be to just make a build by walking through and picking stuff off the shelves.

I drop most of my projects and never touch them. But this one i did it in like an afternoon and got me a nice light source that doesn't burn my eyes.
I think the only way your going to get even lighting is to run your led tape around the inside of the letter as close to the face as possible but not so close that you get hot spots. White components will help. I build signs for a living and PCs for fun. This was a cool video!
This was great and brought back fond memories of NCIX in its heyday. I miss the place and the forums but it sure turned into the biggest crapshow at the end. A fitting tribute to Linus's roots and I like it and hope to see the sign PC in future videos. Maybe I could even drive by the office and see the sign from the street. That would be sweet!
I agree with the plan of doing a back board possibly doing like a 1cm inlay where all the components are and attaching them to it. For the lighting try attaching to the sides of the letters where it would light outside in above th components and should produce relatively even look with some minor dark spots
i cant speak for others, but i want more Tanner content!! i loved his humor, and his way of explaining the sign needing a backing was very similar to how i describe things as well! loved the camera zooming on it btw!!
With all of the CNC machines, 3D printers, and other things invested in; they could design a frame/adapter to increase the depth, that would leave the original parts of the signage/logo untouched, but still allowing cable runs and such.
For the lighting, you might be able to use the LED strips in the middle around the whole letter along the inside wall of it. - basically it would shine straight into the middle of each letter (like a border around each letter effect) That should give you the best effect with the setup
"Edge-lit" is the term you're looking for, and I was scrolling down to see if anyone had suggested it. Seems like a way better solution than trying to light everything from the backplate.
Linus making things 10x harder just because he wants the original sign instead of custom making his own sign to fit everything in it without problems is exactly why I stay subscribed.
