    What a great video Tony. Firstly, I must say how good it was to hear from Lady T. She sounds like she’s doing well. You have amassed a great amount of research to get yourself started, and I now appreciate why you felt the need to revisit this part of the layout. I look forward to keeping up with this project. We finally get to hear Mrs T. She has a very beautiful voice. Glad to hear she is doing well, as is Mrs L (Janet). Last year she had a neck injury and a mastectomy. But all heeled up. I knew that you would find the research needed for Tyne Dock Station. Can't wait to see you begin the build. The canopy looks to be as challenging as the one at South Shields. It will be interesting to see how you mix the colours just right. Your California friends, Bill & Janet.

    Hi Tony, the first photo showing the end of the station where the underpass comes up with railings and the wall of windows and windbreak panel is so distinctive , I think that would be good to reproduce as the position where the underpass emerges rather than the middle of the platform. It's such a unique feature, that and the canopy would scream Tyne Dock, even if the rest of the building wasn't that accurate. It's the unusual features that identify the place. Gotta go, I'm off to see my grandmother, got half dozen eggs for her, hahaha, keep up the Brilliant work, love this layout, cheers, Rich

    • @TONYNORTHEASTERN
      @TONYNORTHEASTERN  4 місяці тому

      Hi Rich. I will put in as much detail from these photos. and i like your ideas. the wind break would as you rightly say give that distinctive look.
      The under passes will coming up through the centre of the platform. as it will allow more space for the rest of the building. and the two huts that we see in the main photo. compromises. and it will have that look about it. to define as Tyne Dock. i hope... wishful thinking but we shall see. cheer's for now Tony.

    That is a totally inspirational set of photographs you've got of Tyne Dock, your going to be able to do a good representation of the station. What is sad is seeing the decline set in, but I suppose that's what they call progress!! Still you're going to restore Tyne Dock to its former glory. It was nice to hear Mrs T. I'm back in Devon now got home about 8ish last night and watched Beyond Paradise, on BBC (recorded) and the story featured quite a bit of the South Devon railway my local heritage railway, it was filmed last summer. Have a good productive week really looking forward to seeing all the detail. Take care both, Eddy and my lot,xxx

    Dear Tony, now that’s some very interesting information and set of photographs and books! Love the mutual effort which already has set the stage for the Tyne Dock station project. As a model North Eastern enthusiast I sincerely appreciate all the efforts to dish up the background information on the history of the station.
    Absolutely marvelous you’re going to add the subway entrances to the station. Especially with the white glazed brick, or the tiles as you said, it will create a next dimension beneath the surface of the tracks. Love the entrance under the bridges. Am very curious how that’s gonna look on the layout.
    On the different photos of the ‘wind breaker’ side, presumably above the station’s entrance stairway, from the lower level subway upward to the platforms; there’s two versions. One which shows a set of, what looks like, steel doors, in line with the articulated fascia board around the roof line. The other version shows a wooden outcrop at and around the location of the steel doors. The outcrop built in similar fashion and colors as the line side hut, closer to the end of the platform.
    Am kinda curious about those steel doors, seems like they gave access to the space above the station’s entrance stairway, maybe in such a way goods could be hoisted up or down. Why else would there be such large doors above the staircase? Do think the version with the outcrop also looks very interesting. Would say it depends on the overall footprint of the station and its canopy to see which version deserves the modeling effort.
    What I especially like about the canopy is the fact that the construction is perpendicular to the tracks. That will create both a very interesting build and will shed light on the platforms in a very specific way. Absolutely agree on your point about the cast iron columns, also being in use as a drainpipe. With all the apexes and valley gutters of the canopy, this will indeed be a great way to collect the water from the different roof surfaces. Am very curious for the next episodes.
    Please give my regards to Mrs. T.
    Cheerio, my master builder friend Tony!

    Great research material Tony. Reminds me a lot of the main station in my town, Dumbarton Central, which has two islands accessed by underpasses (well one underpass that serves both). Over time it has become what you have just removed in Part 1, as the outer lines, one is disused and overgrown and the other is used rarely for the seasonal West Highland Line "posh" trains.

    Hi Tony! I really like how you've researched the build of Tyne Dock, and have absorbed the little details before beginning to construct the buildings, platforms and surrounding infrastructure! I've currently got a couple of books on order dealing with railway stations and railway architecture that I'm hoping to get some inspiration from when I come to building stuff! It'll also be interesting to see if I can adopt some of your techniques in N scale! :) All the best, Ian.

    Nice research Tony, it’s amazing what our can pick out of the photos when you look closely. The underpasses certainly will add to the scene. I liked to see the white building next to the hotel, in earlier days window frames and surrounds were black, which makes the building look quite elegant. Later on as the station is less used they white wash (cheap/ low cost and loss of pride?) everything making it look like a box, what a transformation. Nice to hear all the Ts over tea too! All the best to you both Stephen.
    PS Am on with the CAD, a lot of detail and seen a big improvement I can hopefully do to the layout, pays to come back fresh. Actually spending a lot of time on it too!

      @@TONYNORTHEASTERN Good morning Tony and Laura! No problem, I know how much work goes into doing things like this. It can be totally absorbing, but if you want something done right well you just have to put in the effort. Oh is it the police station? I did have a look through my books but none Tyne Dock, have Leeds, York, Skipton and some going back to 1935. It’s great folk could help you out with those rare photos.
      Great to hear Mrs T is doing well, it will take a long time to fully recover as you mentioned earlier. Just back from a long quarterly round 270 mile shopping trip to Regina, saved a absolute fortune (more to spend on our hobbies), its -10 deg C, been glorious sun whilst there, but just started to snow as unloaded truck - a very long day and a break from the CAD. Time to go for a walk with Rossi and turn in! Take care, all the best Celia and Stephen.

    This is quite a task you have set for yourself but I'm sure we'll see the proverbial Phoenix rise from the ashes. In Derby, the city where I was born and brought up, we had a similar station in a place called Friar Gate. It was a climb to get to it and I think one of the entrances was up through an underpass. I can't be sure though and being just a little boy I image the climb was not really as steep as I now remember it. On one of the pictures you show there is a run of terraced houses behind the station. they would make a good backdrop to the station. Thanks again.

    Hi Tony, just a suggestion on your track layout. If possible move the crossovers back off the bridge. Not sure if there is room to do this but there may be. Move the running line to use the disused siding layout. You could then remove the centre of the bridge to see the proposed entrance. It will also give you more room for your wooden buildings.

    • @TONYNORTHEASTERN
      @TONYNORTHEASTERN  4 місяці тому

    Tony, It appears that the sleeper-built hut had no windows, so I think it was most likely an oil store, somewhere to keep the oil for the signal lamps, etc. If it was a hut for workmen/platelayers/staff it would have had windows and a chimney.

    Hi Tony, an unexpected treat seeing Part 2 appear. The photo of the underpass coming in from the street struck me as interesting, with that plain doorway into the lovely curved tile walls of the underpass, I wonder if that curved wall ever had a roof to it. I'm guessing the doorway is at street level, almost platform level, so the underpass had to go down under the tracks. At first glance seeing the "platelayers hut" I thought it might be a shed for one of those little Wickham Trolleys, but a later photo of the railtour train clearly shows that isn't the case. I wonder what it was used for? Anyway, really looking forward to seeing part 3.

      That's the thing with some of these photos they do keep you guessing. unless you are there at the time. it is very hard to say. Does the Flying Scotsman had had really a double tender??😮
    Dear Tony, Not to bother you but I think it is worth mentioning:
    When you look on the very left side of the underway's wall over the handrail there is a white marking - clearly standing apart from the tiles colour: So by this the tiles cannot be White, the must be a bit darker... I would take something like a light cream, light grey, or Most likely due to the colours photo you did show to us before a kind of light blue. Or I am wrong and you do figure about it is just a rectangular spot of sunligth irritating myself.
    For the "empty corner" I would suggest
    I. a piece of an overgrown siderail/longer catchrail to park locomotives. By this you add a lower area to the rising platforms buildings &c. giving the Scene some more interest.
    II.
    Or you do scratchbuilding a very big tree for this corner as the very end of a place for sheeps or pigs.
    Hopefully my stuff is helpfulll; best wishes to your wife Dame T.
    Christian

    Hi, Tony, take a look at time stamp 12-24, there's a hint of what could be a chimney pot to the right of the fourth chimney... Could there possibly have been five chimneys and not four? If not then this might be evidence of another building at the otherside of the station.... Just a thought....!

      Hi ken. thank you for your thoughts. you could be right. its worth thinking about when i start the planning of the station. cheer's for now Tony.

    The light blue paint on the building. The nearest colour match to BR Eastern region blue is Citadel’s Bahemoth blue. Not sure of spelling.

    Tony, another enjoyable video. In the photo of the underside of the canopy, is there a water fountain just beyond the door and block up window?

    Tony the Tyne dock police station appears to be the same as the one by the customs house at Mill dam that was the river police station

      It Is Peter. but what i like about the building is its size it could fit in that space where the old station use to be. i do think it would make a great addition to the layout...many thanks for commenting. cheer's for now Tony.

    That's a thoughtful bit of research. Thanks for sharing it. Did the station have anything to do with Tyne Dock and the shipping industry?

    • @TONYNORTHEASTERN
      @TONYNORTHEASTERN  4 місяці тому

      Hi Kevin. thank you for commenting. its always great to hear from you. Tyne Dock Had an Iron ore Staithe complex, A massive Wood Yard. and there was McNulties ship yard. i could imagine hundreds of workers getting on and off the trains at Tyne Dock back in the day. so yes you are spot on. many thanks again Tony.
      P.s Mc Nulties ship yard is still going. but they repair Oil Rigs now.

    Hi Tony, would those white-faced bricks on the underpass have been ceramic faced, or as we know them in Glasgow, "Wally bricks"? This would make for a gloss surface rather than a matt finish on the walls.

      Ah Wally bricks. i have not heard of that one before. i might use that in a video. if i can remember. wally bricks. cheer's for now Tony. brilliant comment.
