To cut straight lines, clamp pieces of 1x2 pine and use it for a guide. For really straight lines a circular saw works better than the saw you used.

If you haven't already done so, may I suggest weighing your vehicle pre-build. I did so with mine, and then again once the build was complete so that I knew how much weight I had added with the build out, water, batteries, ect, as well as making sure I wasn't overweight for the chassis. I was able to weigh mine at a truck stop, that had a certified weigh scale. It cost me about $6. Another suggestion would be to measure your rear wheel ride height, prebuild, from say ground, to top of wheel well in the rear. Mine, since the build out, has squatted a lot, and I am now looking into installing a helper spring, to give me a couple more inches of ride height, as well as increased capacity.

Yeah, check out how much weight you are allowed on the highway. Several states allow a maximum of GVW of 18,000 lbs. if you want to travel to Canada (to get to Alaska), BC would want you GVW to be under 5,500 kg. You could take the ferry between Alaska and Bellingham but that is pricy….

The transfer stations around have scales too. San Martin, for sure would let you weigh there. Probably on your side of the hill too.

@@marlenesewell8492 yes but… How much weight? It certainly isn’t unlimited. In fact, you’d be surprised at how little it is, compared to it’s tare weight. Knowing your vehicle weight before/after provides you with important and useful information.

@@marlenesewell8492 She might be collecting a lot of furniture in her new home. Some of those DOT officials may not even give her a break if she is over the limit. Adding insulation, the density of wood used in construction of living areas, a toilet and water tank, electronics: heating and cooling equipment, solar panels, all that weight eventually adds up. The DOT doesn't like their highways wrecked by trucks carrying heavy loads. All I'm saying that it's a good idea to know how much additional weight she can carry before the DOT pulls her over. UA-camr Forestry Forest has a smaller van than her but he has mentioned that he is wary of how close he is to the upper weight limit the RCMP (DOT) allows on the highways. Yeah, he does have a woodstove but it's necessary for -40F winters.

I am 37, and had to use what little I had saved for retirement. A box truck is where I'm headed and I'm excited for the journey. I drove semi trucks for about a year just because I was in love with the tiny house idea (and the company paid for the school, so why not?). Living in the small sleeper in the back was already like a micro-apartment. I had an APU (diesel generator), heater and A/C, an inverter with a fridge cooler and my laptop, TV ... I didn't feel I was missing out on anything. Having to park at truck stops, and by using the same brand, Loves or Flying J, loyally rewards you with free nicely maintained showers. ...The space in a box will be larger than my California bedroom at 10x11, so I'm for it!
      Good luck builders!

I admire your fortitude so much! I’m 67 years old, retired, and just this month started living out of my van while touring Nevada. When I was your age, I didnt have half the Ganas you do. I’m an old fart, but the only advice I could give to you, you already know, “Only You Know What’s Right For You”. You have already learned so much about life over the last two years, you couldn’t have got anywhere else. What ever you choose to do, I’m sure you’ll continue to extract value from it. When you get your new rig built, maybe we’ll bump into each other someplace. I plan to give van-life at least 2 years, and hopefully more!

Maybe you’ve already done it but I would insulate the empty space between the front wall panels too. It’ll help keep the living area warmer and reduce the noise from the outside world. Also I’m not sure the walls, floor, or ceiling are insulated so keep that in mind while you’re building. Might even shed some weight by removing the wood rub strips and installing lighter panel material in place of what’s in there now. Good luck, and stay safe.

Hi Mariah. Just a somewhat wild thought for the future. Some people buy houses, renovate them and sell them. Perhaps you could, in the future, alternate six months on the road with six months fitting out a van. One then hopefully would fund the other and all you learn doing your first build won't be a one off that isn't fully utilized again. The idea came to me at the beginning of this video when you had an expression of pure joy on your face after removing the middle seat in the cabin. You have already made some dreams become reality, so, why not?

I started the same project only I was doing a cargo trailer. Then I changed it up and bought a old holiday rambler travel trailer. It's a 93 model and in really great shape for its age. I've put about 20 grand in the solar system and now working on redoing the waterheater. It's a mobile tiny home I live in while I'm not driving a semi. I'm only home about 3 or 4 days a month but love the freedom I'll have once I start living in it more often. You are a one in a million kinda girl and you taking on this kinda life is very impressive. My hats off to you young lady. Wish there were more like you it make the world a better place

So so so happy you built that little escape hatch thank God lol!
You're such an inspiration and if you can make a living doing this then do it to it sistuh!
I was looking today at something Amazon was advertising for rv'ers. I'm getting close to retiring and my bus is pretty much ready. I just got to do a few more things.. I only want to travel and follow the weather because I don't want to get rid of my house quite yet. I may never get rid of it because it was my grandma's. I'm just a sentimental fool.
Anyway there's a whole site for jobs for people who live in there Vans, RV's, cars All that jazz. You can work while you're on the road and I've been looking into that because I don't know what the heck I can do on the computer lol! You're an inspiration... keep on keeping on girly. I can't wait to see what you do with this box truck. It is going to be fabulous I am sure 😁❤️

You go girl! Best way to learn is to do. Making mistakes are an important process to learn from. Dont let others rain on your parade. Lil tid bit, that cereal is high in chemicals. Wheat is sprayed w/poison before its cut. Option is organic wheat cereals. Best of luck on your build.

Oh my. You have, basically, everything to learn. I would say, don't rush this. Research every minute you're not doing something. Even just home builds or automotive work. With something like this, you're going to need knowledge of all fields of construction and mechanics (not just auto) except concrete. I remodeled my mothers entire house completely including tearing out exterior walls from knowing nothing and learning from UA-cam. You're on the same platform that can teach you everything you need to know to do this and it not only look good but function and last. And, that gasket.. I wouldn't have done it that way. But, it's your project, I wish you well.

You inspire me. I just purchased a 1984 40 foot sailboat for 15k. I have issues with driving on the road but I still want to live the nomadic lifestyle. So I guess i'm doing a boat build soon. Now I just need to find a furry companion to accompany me.

I know stupid but watching you gave me a mental kick in the butt to just start. And regardless of what all the YT experts say I think you’re doing great so far.

Fun channel. Just discovered . You will succeed with the box truck project. Good work.
Advice- For anyone traveling in a vehicle, get spare keys made that you can stash under the truck. Use zip ties or wire. Do not use magnet key boxes, they will fall off. Spare keys may save you from the elements some day. I was camping at Mammoth lakes when my son tossed me the car keys while we were fishing off a bridge. Yup, into the lake they went. And the bears were beginning to roam. slid under my Suburban and retrieved the spare keys. I have been stashing keys under my vehicles ever since. Better safe than sorry!

Hey, as long as you have the guts to do the build, go for it. People may question you, but don't let it get to you EVER! I am 52 and just started my bus build and my family thinks I am crazy. Luckily I have a lifetime of experience to learn to not care what they think about it. As evidenced by this video, you have the determination to forge your own path, and that takes some serious courage. YOU CAN DO THIS!

The sights I have seen from the comfort of my own inwardly facing life fills my heart with joy. My mind is on fire with what you started with, gone through and emerged from, with a sense of belonging and being that befits you and Finn. I have just bingewatched your videos from last "Season" and what a journey it was. I really loved the persepctive shown and indeed the struggles you went through because it shows us that life is hard for people but we do not need to go through it alone.
What you have achieved is remarkable and it is just the beginning of a story that will have many many ups as well as downs and I hope you will feel comfortable enough to allow us to experience it with you. Looking forward to the next installment :)
