Rachael Leigh Cook (She’s All That, A Tourists Guide to Love) joins us this week and shares her story of quickly moving from Hollywood aspirations growing up in Minnesota to feeling like she was playing catch-up, unable to enjoy the success of the late 90’s box office smash: She’s All That.
Rachael was amazing this week!! She talks about the idea of feeling haunted by potential and the weight of the expectations she placed on herself, because of the solid upbringing and support she had behind her.
We also talked about how motherhood was the ultimate life changing switch, how entertainment is a game of ‘pay now’ or ‘pay later,’ and some infamously uncomfortable audition stories.

You need to get Will Freidle for your Inside of you podcast. He would be another actor who also has incredible stories to share.
if he could get Will Friedle, it would be great. I've been enjoying Pod Meets World allot.
Great idea 😀
Will is awesome. He seems so nice. Love his BB they need to bring BB back again with him voicing.
Yes!!! They would get along so well!
Will Friedrice has his own podcast too. Cross-pollinate!
Had a huge crush when “She’s All That” when I watched it on VHS….yes I just time stamped myself 😂😂
She is a good actress but I’d say too beautiful for Hollywood 🎉🎉
Loved her on the show Perception, which I think most people didn't watch, but she was great.
I was one of those guys that watched it every week. TNT had a few good shows during those years.
I remember that show. She was great on it
What a superb guest - engaging, funny, and she just seems so calm and balanced and confident, I want to be more like that! 😄Thank you Rachael for being your lovely self, and thank you as always, Michael and Ryan, for another great podcast episode. ❤
2 random observations here: Hasn't literally aged since She's All That.
2) Sooooo awesome that she is truly so kind, sweet, and the wallflower she played in She's All That. Absolutely love it. And funny too!
Such a great interview!
You really should get Freddie Prinze Jr on.
And sarah michelle gellar
As a Minnesotan this was so much fun to listen too, because it sounded like one of my sisters being interviewed. She seems so sweet, but also lets it be known when she is ready to move on from something, and hearing her talk just brings warmth.
"Josie and the Pussycats" is, sincerely, one of the most overlooked, underrated pieces of social/pop culture satire, and Ms. Cook is definitely one of the driving forces behind that delivery. She absolutely owned the naïvety, the "deer in the headlights" stuff, along with the "mean girl" parts of the script.
She's done so much incredible work, but that's one that I think unfairly gets left out of the conversations.
Ikr
Funny i randomly come across Inside of you channel now and then to see who Micheal is interviewing ..
WOW Racheal leigh cook thats a name ive not heard in a long long time i remember her back in She's All That with Freddie and even the movie she did with Ryan Rhillippe ( cant remember the name )
Josie and the pussycats then POOF gone !!
Always thought she had great presence in the films she did and i watched.
WOW blown away to hear that name again !!
Could not agree more! It was way a head of its time and the music was better then legit artists of that time! I still have 3 small words on many a playlist!
Also, I’ve always had a little crush on Rachael, but I never knew (until this interview) how intelligent, witty, self-aware, & confident she is…. Yeah she’s a babe
Oh absolutely. I really enjoyed the joke. But of course, it's probably not wise to market a movie to the very demographic you're making fun of. But yes, enjoyable. Much more so than "Idiocracy," but less memorable somehow.
10:14 This is a perfect example of why "proper parenting" and giving children "models for success" are so important. The reason why the majority of kids who grow up in poverty don't achieve great success has less to do with not having the material advantages, and more to do with not having the psychological underpinning and drive to achieve success, no matter the odds. When their parents provide no models, and if their siblings (if they have any) provide no models, it can be very hard for children to learn how to be strong in a world that wants to knock them down (especially if the deck is stacked against them.)
It's almost like that's a backbone of capitalist society
Thanks for this comment! It felt soothing to read and be validated because its so true and people rarely talk about this...
Growing up barely middle class there was a lot of things that I missed out on because my parents didnt have the money (and I dont hold that against them) but more importantly I realize now, they didnt have that proper attitude either. I mean on paper I had a decent upbringing. But never once did either of them tell me any of that stuff. They were so emotionally hands off sometimes I wish I had helicopter parents just to get some guidance. I had absolutely no models for success, no help or guidance or mentorship. This caused a severe lack of confidence. There were a lot of opportunities I skipped because of it. I did ok as a kid I had drive and did well in school but I turned 18 and they had nothing for me, no money or support for college. I couldnt even get my Dad to help me figure out admissions or drive me to a campus tour. It was like ok good luck figuring everything out on your own newly minted adult. I had no models at the most critical point in my life. And I wasnt even aware how damaging that was until I basically had a mental breakdown and burned out at 20. None of my family understood what was going on because "I was always so independent as a child" ya because I was forced to be! I cant help but wonder what my life would be like if I had that 'model for success' someone with a guiding hand to help me figure shit out as a young adult.
Going through the hard times and being in poverty with as a child made me never wanna go through that again with my own children, it’s been the driving force of my life not to be that way. I broke the cycle like pretty much a lot of other people do, it’s not hard to be the best you can be when you come from the worst
I could have listened to her for hours more! Hope she comes back on
What a sweetheart. She is totally charming, and I love it when the guests ask Michael questions about his life. Great episode.
It’s impossible to not adore her.
Always loved Rachael Leigh Cook, and how lovely to find she's such a sweetheart.
Wife and I only watched shes all that for the first time two weeks ago. It was great! Really looking forward to watching this episode.
This is so cool because it's a Batman Beyond reunion of sorts as well since she voiced one of the friends that went to the same high school as Terry McGinnis. She voiced Chelsea who was also Dana's best friend. Rosenbaum of course voice of Ghoul part of the Jokerz gang. For me Batman Beyond also had that John Hughes vibe to it where it had that coming of age story. I also remember Rosenbaum voicing a teen who is disappointed because he came second place and another student came first place which led to him going after her. This was also the episode that Max figures out Terry was Batman.
There was a movie filming in '96 called "18th Angel" she was in with Shooter McGavin. Was an extra in that before working film crews. Remember thinking "this unknown girl's gonna be something". Like how easygoing she is, looks great too.
This is my favorite interview of yours to date. I could listen to you talk to her for hours. I'm happy to see I'm not the only one that absolutely loved Josie and the Pussycats. 90s nostalgia, I don't think that will ever come again and I'm happy to have experienced that era.
Loved this episode. Rachel, if you are creeping comments, just know you are imprinted in the hearts and minds of teens who were of an age when She's All That came out. I never knew what kind of person you were, but this interview rockets you to top tier actresses that are super cool and legit as themselves. You don't need theater experience, you are brilliant just as you are. Michael, brilliant work as always. Ryan, you, as well. Cheers, squad!
Can’t wait to listen/watch this one!! She’s All That is one of my favourite films and loved Rachael’s voiceover work for Tifa Lockhart ❤ Advent Children is one of my favourites ❤ Thank you for having her on the podcast Michael ❤️ Happy Tuesday 💙
I'd love it if you interviewed CCH Pounder. She was great in JLA as Amanda Waller but also amazing in The Shield which I'd love to hear y'all talk about. If you haven't seen The Shield it's AMAZING.
I had a crush on Rachel back in the 90s where she was in that movie where she's dorky with glasses then hot j just forget the movie atm but it was all over the wall in blockbuster.
Michael thanks for sharing about your mom. I can relate in ways. Always felt my mom was a provider (food, clothes , shelter, education) but now in my 40s,I can tell she wasn't or not really capable (still isnt) of being a mother of the nurturing traditional mother role. Can't even recall times of hearing, I love you. Appreciate your openess. Made me feel a bit less alone
Thanks for this interview! It was a great listen. 🍻🍻🥂🥂
BEST PART OF TUESDAY MORNING. HANDS DOWN. Thanks for another great show as always Rosey, Ryan, and crew! Awesome guest!
Rachael seems so down to earth.
I really enjoyed this episode.
I enjoyed her candid and Honest conversation, her perspective and views.
Loving this podcast today! I remember going to the movies to watch the Baby sitters club movie. I have everyone of the books still. I am learning so much about her. Inside of you is the best part of my Tuesday.
RLC was my first celebrity crush! I loved her in Psych!
I wish she'd had a bigger, more substantial role in Psych. She's great in so many things and that show was a good fit but she was relegated to the occasional pop-in by the girlfriend.
This made me feel old. Mine was Paula Abdul. 😳
@@kaligriffin Not to make this competitive but mine was in Battlestar Galactica....the original version. 🙂
@@Elwaves2925 🤣
I just finished listening to this week’s episode and it was delightful. Rachael definitely opened up and had so many great stories. That is awesome that she got into producing. I agree with her philosophy on parenting. Y’all should definitely do a project together one day.
I so totally thought that her character in Psych was the best fit for Shawn. Probably because I had (have?) the biggest crush on her.
When I was a teenager used to watch "she is all that", awesome :D
I had the most massive crush on Rachael the first time I saw her in She's All That all those years ago, and when I heard that she's from Minnesota, my teenage brain at the time thought there's an incredibly outside shot that maybe we could date because I'm also from MN. Reality sets in quickly though lol. Oh, and she was in the iconic "this is your brain on drugs commercial".
this was so great! we definitely need Rachael to come back on the pod again in the future!
I want to play match maker Rosenbaum… Rachael Rachael! You would be perfect together. So sweet the two of you! Loved her always. Hope she gets a great script soon. She deserves it. ❤😊
Well, Rosey mentioned that Rachael was married at the top of the show. Which is a bummer for him. He's more or less spoken his GF into existence with how often he talks about wanting a real relationship. It's just a matter of time before he finds that person in his life.
Thank you so much Michael for this one! I have loved Rachael since the first movie I ever saw her in. Having her on the show brought in so much more than you get from seeing someone in a Movie. She wholesome, down to earth and loved the way she would engage you as well. Best one of the podcasts I have seen thus far!. Also good to know to look out for her next movie on Netflix! Cheers to you all
Love that Rosenbaum referenced Brother Love lol Classic WWF 😂😂
Each week since the beginning of this podcast has been phenomenal. The guest choice has been amazing and I look forward to every Tuesday. Love Rachael not only is she smart and beautiful she is so down to earth. I seen most of her movie and shows with my daughter’s. From She's All That, He's All That, Josie and the Pussycats, The Baby-Sitters Club, several awesome hallmark movie ♥️ Loved listening to her on this Episode, Michael you Rock!!!
Listened to the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack just this morning! Such a great movie
Rosenbaum and Freddie Prinze would be a great podcast. They would geek out on star wars, comics and movies for sure
Now would be a great time to make that connection too. Freddy is taking a break from his podcast until Wrestlemania and should be available since his wife Sarah is promoting her new series.
Love actress Racheal- glad she found love again and happy !!!!!! Yes Gotham Knight -you and Jensen!! A Winchesters and Gotham Knights show ?
Wow this was really a great one! She seems like such an adorable human being. I loved her role in the movie "Antitrust". Ya'll are such genuine people!
Even if once again, i don’t know Rachael well, it’s the inner adventure of this podcast that i retained above all and such an open and smart discussion on your families and careers 💘!! Thank you so much Michael and Ryan for this great Tuesday’s moment !! 💙❤
I saw Josie in the theatre and I loved it.
I truly enjoy how open and honest you are with your podcast. That is something that cannot be faked. I always know there is 2 hours of good content to watch each week. Thank you for being you.
Sorry, I know you like short comments but it all had to be said.
"Oh she's great! She's just... All That."
Freddie would be awesome 😎
THIS was fantastic! I love her!
LOL the golden retriever part of the weird audition LOL. funny shit
"You have so much potential." I can so relate to that. I heard that all the time in high school (20+ years ago). To this day I still have problems with depression and guilt that I didn't get a doctorate and I'm not working on world-changing technology or something, because that's what it felt like everyone expected me to do.
You have probably already discovered that living your life according to other people’s expectations leads to a non-authentic life, and that if that is what you have been doing it is hard to find out what it is that you yourself truly want, need, desire or love to do. Still that last part is the road to your authentic life. It my not be world-changing, however it most definitely will change your world, and like the cheesy commercial slogan says: you are worth it❣️ It is one of the best reasons to take good care of yourself, so please do.😌
Gotta tell ya, Michael, this is one of the best conversations I’ve ever eavesdropped on, and it serves as a perfect coda for my youth. Thanks so much for this, man.
Great convo, you two!
I like Rachael and will definitely check out her work, and her aspiration to be a child model at such a young age shows an inner confidence. The conversation between you two was very insightful and very easy on the ear, thank you for bringing this lovely lady to our attention 😊
ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED and LOVED Rachael Leigh Cook💓...my favorite interview of yours🙌. Love YOU and your show❣️
What she said about parenthood was so insanely profound. I’m actually doing some serious thinking!
you two have such great chemistry. I could see you and Rachel doing a Divorced couple love story. Love the Show
Stellar, laidback interview. I loved it.
I approve of Rachael's Big Lebowski sweater 🤣
She probably had white russian in that thermos
I loved her in Jossie and the Pussycats and of course She's All That based on Shakespeare's play. Also she could go dramatic playing Sly Stallone's onscreen niece in the Get Carter remake which also starred Michael Caine.
One of the master classes I took for acting back in the day used Rachael's performance in "She's All That" as a prime, solid example of good range for a drama-rom-comedy. This interview was awesome. Thanks everyone!. ^_^
It’s taken me like 5 episodes to realize this is a celebrity mental health show, and would probably explode if marketed like that
Rachael was my very first crush, but I did not realize who she was until over two decades later. She was pictured on the Milk-Bone dog biscuits carton back in the 80s, and it was the early 2010s when she was interviewed on some late show, and the host showed that photo. Talk about a shocker!
I believe it was the show Las Vegas that truly introduced me to her. Later on I would watch the miniseries into the west, along with the TV show perception. I did eventually watch Josie and the pussycats, and it really wasn't all that bad.
Excellent interview! I enjoyed listening to it. And it's nice to see Rachael again. She is looking pretty damn good.
1:11:59 talk about a holy shit moment!
This podcast sounded like a first date, and a good one!
Being a good parent is a ever changing subjective thing. My parents were very hands off people that went to work and lived their lives. I knew they loved me and for me that was enough because I understood their plight and I had a very good extended family. For me my family worked. As a parent now to do the same thing would not be enough for them to feel loved. It's a weird thing to say but maybe it's because of the disconnect from a new generation in an electronic age. Parents have to be more present and try harder so that their kids get the kind of love and direction that they got a generation ago. I might be getting too much "inside baseball" in the conversation. But I will say that having a piece of you that you love more than anything in the world that you get to raise and see absolute joy and admiration from will make you a better man. EDIT: For the sake of saying this when I thought it should be obvious. You would have to have children with a person that you would want to be connected to for basically the rest of your life. There is a reason that marriage is a thing. It's not always holding hands and sweet nothings in beautiful weather. There are always going to be times when you would rather be anywhere else than in the same room as the person you married. That is called life, and this new world of perfect Instagram pictures has distorted that fact.
Excellent interview Michael and Rachael. Love it 😂
I'd seen "Josie and the Pussycats" and "She's All That" before and thought she was cute but I legit fell in love with her when she was recurring on "Psych". As with so many celebrities I admire; when they go on this podcast I get a little anxiety beforehand because it's like that phrase "Never meet your heroes" because this podcast gets down into the true character of its guests like no other interview show and, sometimes, I'll discover personality traits/flaws that make me prefer to have gone on without knowing in ignorance. I'm glad that she is just as wonderful as the version of her I'd created in my mind. She is all that.
Thank you Thank you Thank you for “I’d seen” instead of “I seen.” A little bit of faith in humanity and the universe restored.
Trust Rachel Leigh to give you such a life changing revelation. Like you said you believe in fate, today as I watch you you have one of the best podcasts in the world.I watch you all the way from Africa. What are the odds that that guy didn't have a pilot's license?
Love this podcast so much. Each episode is full of insight into the people being interviewed. And of course, my favorite actor to portray Lex Luthor! Would have to say Michael is one of my favorite interviewer's/show hosts to watch! :)
I love that you talk about death. I think its good to discuss it. We all are going that way
Wow! Another great episode. I'm four in so far and the time just flies by. Even though I saw the ad for this Rachael Leigh Cook episode I want to put it off because I did want to ruin my opinion of either the show, or Rachel with a less than good viewing. She is wonderful. Michael is wonderful. It's win! With some of these podcasts it seems like the host and guest have to pay some emotional fee at the tool booth. Or go smash some awkward dam in the river bursts the talk starts. Not so here as they both just open the screw cap on the bottle life to let the rivulets of their experiences flow with each other. Kinda of disarming to me how good the shows have been so far. Another nice thing about the first episode I popped into was the fact I was at least a quarter of the way in before I realized who Michael Rosenbaum was other than just a great interviewer with solid skill. Or even better, a great person at relating and empathizing with guest. Even better since I didn't really like Michael enough during Smallville to do a fanboy. Well the show and Michael has my follow now. Thanks and love them. Now on to more episodes!
My favorite part of Tuesday 💙 Michael 🤘
The Big Empty was my most favourite movie she was in.
I wish some of your videos here would be live so we can superchat to ask questions that might get overlooked but ultimately would you recommend someone who's trying to get into tv series should move to LA or stay where the currently are 🙏 also thank you for the content
I would recommend stay local and build a portfolio with commercials etc, something to show prospective agents in LA, and then, once established, a move would be the correct endgame.
@@thetasigma75 I know this will probably sound alil out there but what or how does one build a portfolio with commercials and how does someone find agents to pass the work on too if they don't have an agent also thanks in advance 🙏
Rachael Leigh Cook needs to be in more movies, make 2023 the year of RLC!
This was such a good interview with Rachael Leah Cook and she is still nice, humble, smart and still has a good sense of humor. One of my favorite commercials is that anti drug ad when the character played by Rachael cook and she seemed very convincing in that anti drug ad. In my opinion that commerical will always be a classic and Rachael is still a good actress and she still looks gorgeous for her age. Good interview with Rachael for sure Michael Rosenbaum.
The Mig story!!! Holy cow. Roseys face when she said the pilot was a fraud!!!
What I like about Inside of You is the actors and actresses that you bring on the show. Some of them, not to be rude and never how they appear on your show, feel like they are unapproachable. Where as some I would love to meet in person. I live in Albuquerque, NM where Freddie Prinze Jr is from, and he told a funny story about his mom talking to one of his teachers. I do hope you can get him on. Rachael had some great stories and you need to get her on again. What is so great about this show is how comfortable you and your guest are and basically shooting the shit and it is just awesome.
She was fun. I had no idea that she voiced Tifa. I've only played FF7, but she was in that game too. This makes me want to play it again. On a side note, I got my signed copy of the new Sunspin album today; I'm excited to listen.
She was Tifa's original US voice for the Advent Children movie,Dirge of Cerberus,Kingdom Hearts 2 and Crisis Core before they started the Remake games
Rosey, you did turn out good:). I love this interview with Rachel. She's so cool.
*Michael LOVE THIS PODCAST!!! Love the guests on your show. Really ENJOYED RACHAEL LEIGH COOK. PLEASE... GET FREDDIE PRINZE.🙏🙏*
Great show
What an amazing women she is.
Loved every minute of this
1999: 27 y/o me, crush activated; 2023: 51 y/o me, still sees it!
Great interview and would love to see her in a Fargo season
Rachel have a "je ne sais quoi" that i love!
Love listening to u!!
Kick ass interview I love RLC :D
Good show. RLC is a very interesting person to listen to. I've appreciated her work and the various things she's tried. Even her performance as Jaesa in Star Wars: The Old Republic was very entertaining and good. She gives it all regardless of what she does.
I LOVE RACHAEL LEIGH COOK! This was great! 😀
This is the best interview-hands down so far. Always loved the movie “She’s all that” and this is the 1st time I have seen her interviewed. Grabbing a cup of coffee and I’m ready ❤❤❤
I had such a crush on Rachael after she's all that. She is so cool and very chill person. great listen.
Ok I fully realized. I wanna see a Rachael and Michael Rom Com of a podcast that gets instant fame and crashes faster. You both have really great voices for the podcast!
I decided to start writing this story
I would watch it. Send me the draft when done
@@sixty9joella how?
Great Show
I adore her and have since "She's All That"!
Very fun interview so far. Making my commute a lot more enjoyable. Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤. Happy Tuesday y’all .
What a great guest!
I love this episode
Hey look, it's Abigail Lytar from Psych!
Any mention of Tifa in this interview and what her opinion of the Remake is?
I had the biggest crush on RLC. I actually wrote to her once and she sent me an autographed photo (which I still have).
Omg I loved the babysitters club!
Anyone have a timestamp for any Psych talk? Love that show.
I remember RLC from Baby Sitters club..this is the crossover we never knew we needed!
